OUR STATE’S CAPITAL www.augustamaine.gov (207) 626-2300 Population: 18,594 Located on both sides of the Kennebec River at the head of tide, Augusta is one of the United States’ most beautiful capitals. As Maine’s capital city since 1827, Augusta is a city rich in history. The area was first explored by the Popham Colony in 1607 and was first inhabited by English settlers from the Plymouth Colony in 1628 as a trading post. At this time, the area was known by its Native American name, Cushnoc, meaning “head of the tide.” Augusta was named after the daughter of Henry Dearborn in 1797 and was named county seat for Kennebec County in 1799. After Maine became a state in 1820, Augusta was designated the state’s capital, beating the cities of Portland, Brunswick, and Hallowell for the title. From its early days as a Pilgrim trading post, the city has grown as the center of state and county government, an industrial and trade center, and a center for the region’s health and educational services. Augusta is the center of employment, commerce and service for Central Maine. For much of the city’s history, Water Street, built in the 1700s, on the banks of the Kennebec River was the central business district as the location of the area’s commercial and industrial life. As transportation improved in the area, business began to spread to other areas of the city. Today, downtown Augusta is in the midst of a revitalization with renewed and ongoing focus from the community. Market rate housing, public art, community events, new and established restaurants, retail stores, and business offices are contributing to a thriving and growing downtown. Recreational opportunities and cultural activities play an important role of life in Augusta. From outdoor concerts and movies to museums to golf to public and state parks to fishing and hunting to shopping and more, Augusta has all the best Maine has to offer within your reach.

Belgrade, located northwest of Augusta, was incorporated in 1796. The sixty square miles of the town are largely composed of lakes, streams, and wetlands. In the summer months, the idyllic town’s population nearly doubles when part-year residents return to their cottages and seasonal camps along the many scenic lakes and streams. For those who enjoy fishing, Belgrade’s five lakes and their inlet and outlet streams offer several species of fish. Boaters will find plenty of water surface to cruise on from morning to night. Nature lovers will also be delighted by the opportunities to bird watch and spot the many species that call Maine home. As former farmland reverts to tree growth, deer, moose, and birds have become more plentiful for people to enjoy. When first settled, the citizens of Belgrade were mostly farmers or worked in grist and lumber mills. Now, there is only one working farm remaining in Belgrade, and employment in town is limited. Belgrade has become what many call a “bedroom community” composed of people who reside in Belgrade but work elsewhere. Small businesses such as restaurants and country stores provide a few yearround jobs, and rental cottages, boys and/or girls camps, marinas, and a golf course add part-time positions in the summer.

Chelsea, incorporated on March 1, 1851 from a portion of Hallowell, was named for a Massachusetts town, which in turn was named for a section of London, England. Chelsea is the “gateway to the capital,” laying directly to the south of Augusta. Chelsea is home to the Togus Veterans Administration facilities, whose campus has an interesting story. Horace Beals, a granite dealer, built a resort hotel, the Togus Springs Hotel, on the site of mineral springs from the Worromontogus Stream in 1858. The 134-room hotel did not prove profitable, and the property was sold to United States government in 1866. Togus was transformed from a hotel into the first veterans facility developed by the federal government. In 1904, the number of veterans living at the facility peaked at nearly 2,800, with most men living in dormitories or in small cottages on the grounds. The Togus of today is named Togus VA Medical Center and is operated by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. The facility is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Aside from Togus, the principal settlement is near the bridge connecting the town with Hallowell. Along the river are a few ice-houses, and near the southern line is one of the large houses owned by the Knickerbocker Ice Company. The Mane Central Railroad, on the opposite side of the river, is accessible by bridge or boat. The town office hosts the Chelsea veterans memorial and a smaller memorial plaque to Chester Caldwell “For his many years of service to the school and a dedicated ‘Town Father.’”

Dresden was first settled as Frankfort in 1752 by German and French Huguenot immigrants. A town in Lincoln County, it was incorporated as Pownalborough in 1760 as when Lincoln County was created in the Maine District of Massachusetts. On June 25, 1794, the town was incorporated with its new name, Dresden, as chosen by Lincoln County Probate Judge Jonathan Bowman. Dresden is located on the eastern side of the Kennebec River. Historic sites include the Bridge Academy building and the Pownalborough Courthouse. The 1760 Pownalborough Courthouse was the first seat of government east of the Kennebec River. The Pownalborough Courthouse has hosted future U.S. President John Adams, George Washington’s first Supreme Court nominee William Cushing, Robert Treat Paine and David Sewall. It was the setting for a trial noted in midwife Martha Ballard’s diary. Today, the courthouse is now used as a museum and is open to the public. Bridge Academy came into existence due to the generosity of Llewellyn Lithgow and Samuel Bridge. Additional endowments from Edmund and Frederick Bridge enhance the potential for “A Free High School for the children of Dresden.” It served in that capacity until 1966, with over 430 students receiving their high school diplomas between 1892 and 1944. Due to the buildings intended purpose for education, Trustees of Bridge Academy set up the Bridge Academy Public Library on the site in 1984 to serve residents of Dresden. The Earle R. Kelley Wildlife Management Area is a 500 acre park, 290 acres of which is marshland, maintained by the State Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, 1.5 miles from the intersection of Route 27 and Blinn Hill Road. Dresden Bog, part of the Management Area, is a water-accessible nature preserve.

Located on the banks of the Kennebec River between Gardiner and Hallowell, Farmingdale is a vibrant residential community with densely populated riverbanks and open rural back-land. The town was incorporated on April 3, 1852 from parts of South Kennebec River Rail Trail
Hallowell, North Gardiner, and West Gardiner. During the 19th century and before the availability of mechanical refrigeration, many businesses existed in Farmingdale along the Kennebec River, including shipyards, brickyards, pottery, and a glue factory. A major business on the Kennebec River was harvesting and selling ice worldwide. Ice was cut from the frozen water and stored in warehouses, often insulated with sawdust. When the ice was gone, the river was often clogged with logs floating downstream to paper mills further south. The career of one of Farmingdale’s noted citizens provides insights into the town’s past. According to Maine’s Historic Places, Peter Grant was a self-made

man who, at his death in 1836, left an estate of over $100,000 (very large for the time), including a shipyard in Farmingdale, half-ownership of four good-sized vessels, and large real estate holdings in the area. His social position is indicated by the fact that one of his sons married a daughter of Dr. Benjamin Vaughan, the patriarch of Hallowell.

JEFFERSON
www.jeffersonmaine.org (207) 549-7401 Population: 2,427
Jefferson is a town in Lincoln County, incorporated from Ballstown Plantation on February 24, 1807. Historically the present town dates back to January 13, 1630, when a grant of fifteen miles on each side of the Kennebec River from the mouth to the present site of Gardiner was made to William Bradford, governor of the Pilgrim Colony of Plymouth, Massachusetts. The town of Jefferson was included in this area and was part of the plantation of Ballstown, founded in 1770 by John Ball. Abandoned granite quarries and clay banks where bricks were made suggest the early economic activities of the area. The Gazetteer of Maine in 1886, observed the following: “The principal occupation of the people is agriculture. There is at East Jefferson, on Damariscotta Lake, a flourishing cheese factory. At this place there are also lumber, stave and shingle mills, a wooden pump and carriage factory. At West Jefferson are a shingle-mill and potash factory, etc.” Jefferson has a substantial frontage on Damariscotta Lake, both in its north end and on virtually all its western shore. Damariscotta State Park is at the northeast corner of the lake, in Jefferson. The park features a sandy beach and picnic area. Visitors can also enjoy swimming, canoeing, and fishing.

Manchester was settled in 1775 and became a town in 1850. The central part of town was first known as Hallowell Cross Roads, Manchester Cross Roads, Manchester Forks, and finally simply The Forks, a fitting name as seven roads meet here: Winthrop, Pond, Kerns Hill, Hallowell, Augusta, Puddledock and Readfield Roads. Cobbosseecontee Lake, or simply Cobbossee, is known for its coves, inlets, and over two dozen islands. The remains of farm buildings on the Lewiston Road (Route 9/126) recall an earlier time when large farmhouses, barns, and silos dominated the landscape.

POINTS OF INTEREST SAMANTHA SMITH MEMORIAL In 1982, Samantha Smith, a ten-yearold child from Manchester, Maine wrote to congratulate Yuri Andropov on his appointment as Soviet Premier. In her letter, Samantha confided her fears of nuclear war and the tense relations between the United States and the Soviet Union. Later, Premier Andropov invited Samantha and her family to visit the Soviet Union, experience its culture and meet Soviet children. Tragically, Samantha’s voice was silenced in a 1985 plane crash, but her legacy remains a major step in the successful peace efforts between the two super powers. The memorial is located next to the Maine State Museum. CHILDREN’S DISCOVERY MUSEUM This exciting Discovery Museum offers a “hands-on” opportunity for youngsters through grade five to have fun while learning in an interactive environment. A host of exciting exhibits, including a restaurant, grocery store and bank, theater and a rainforest/toddler play area. Kids can also learn about engineering, construction and transportation. When the building was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982, it was called “a handsome late Federal style brick church unusually refined for such a rural context.” Forty years after it was built, artist Charles J. Schumacher was hired to create tompe l’oeil style murals on the walls and ceilings. Visitors can see the meeting house today exactly how it was in 1868. unionmeetinghouse.org
KENNEBEC COUNTY COURT HOUSE The Kennebec County Court House, located at the intersection of State and Winthrop Streets, was built in 1830. This granite building is a clear example of the Greek revival style of construction. From 1830 to 1969, the Maine Supreme Judicial Court held sessions in the Court House, and the room where they met still contains the original chairs and desks. A $50 million addition was completed in 2015. The Kennebec County Court House, is listed in the National Registry of historic buildings.

COLONIAL THEATER Built in 1913, the Colonial Theater is located on Water Street in Augusta along the Kennebec River. The building suffered extensive damage in a 1926 fire and was rebuilt shortly after as larger than the original. It featured silent films with live music until sound pictures were introduced in the late 1920s. After 40 years of neglect, a group of community members formed Colonial Theater, Inc., a nonprofit organization, to save the Colonial from demolition. In its heyday, the Colonial was a primary site for entertainment for residents before the age of automobiles, videotapes, and cable television. Today, the Theater is in the first phase of restoration that, when opened, will bring cinema, the performing arts, public events, education, a broad spectrum of digital programming to downtown Augusta. CAPITOL PARK Set between the Maine State House and the Kennebec River, Capitol Park was created in 1827 after Augusta residents donated 34 acres of land for the future State House and park. In the 1920s, the Olmstead Brothers were commissioned to design the Governor’s mansion, State House, and park. With wide gravel paths between rows of trees, the park is Maine’s earliest documented designed landscape. Capitol Park was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. MILL PARK Mill Park is located on the site of the Edwards Manufacturing Mill that once fueled Augusta’s economy, which was destroyed in a fire in 1993. In recent years, the park has evolved from a barren landscape to a social space. A Farmer’s Market runs the first Tuesday in May until the last Tuesday before Thanksgiving under the pavilion in the park. A dog park is also located within the park. Four petanque courts are also located in the park for public use, and equipment can be rented for free at the Buker Center. Access to the Kennebec River can be found at the far end of the park where a kayak and canoe launch is located.
