But, ask most Mainers and they’d say they didn’t need a survey to tell them that... just look around and you can see it for yourself. Maine boasts more than 75 dog-friendly beaches, over a thousand pet-friendly lodging facilities, dog parks in many larger towns and cities, and miles and miles of pet-friendly hiking trails. Maine towns top numerous petfriendly lists. One Green Planet and the TravelChannel voted Bar Harbor the 2nd and 3rd most petfriendly town in the US respectively. pettravel.com listed Maine as a pet-friendly state and FidoFriendly Magazine selected Portland as one of the “50 Best of the Best in the Dog World”. During the summer months, businesses in these towns, as well as others, put out water dishes to help keep pets hydrated. According to one TripAdvisor survey, “49% of pet owners said they plan to travel with their pets in the next 12 “A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself.” JOSH BILLINGS

SOUTHERN MAINE
The southern Maine region is the most popular area for visitors coming to the state as it is only an hour’s drive from Boaston, the hub of New England. For many others, it is only a two to three hour ride to hit our southern border. Our southern Maine region is a tourist’s delight with a mix of rocky coastline and some of the most inviting sandy beaches in all the state. The towns and villages alolng the southern coast are filled with history and unique shopping experiences. There’s no shortage of diverse dining experiences from gourmet to casual takeout food, cozy coffee shops and lively brew-pubs with outside pet-friendly seating.
THE YORKS One of southern Maine’s petfriendliest communities is The Yorks. It’s famous for long sandy beaches, and a safe, family-friendly beach-town atmosphere. As each year passes, the area becomes more of a destination for weddings, family reunions, or just a place to get away. Many of the lodging facilities have “pet-friendly” rooms or there are a few businesses in the local area where visitors can board their pets. Many residents and visitors enjoy the pet-friendly beaches with their dogs, even during the summer months. From May - September, dogs are allowed on the beach from sunrise until 8:00am for exercise 8
off leash, but under the owner’s control. From 6:00pm until sunrise, dogs are allowed back on the beach as long as they are leashed. Nubble Lighthouse is one of the most photographed lighthouses in the world and is a popular spot for residents and visitors alike. It has a small park with benches that make it a peaceful place to rest and reflect. Once a summer-season-only resort area, York has become a year-round vacation destination. The Museums of Old York maintain numerous historic buildings including Jefferds’ Tavern, the John Hancock Wharf, the Old Gaol (America’s oldest jail), the Emerson-Wilcox House. This museum is located in the heart of York Village and offers lectures and special events throughout the year. It is open for tours in the summertime.
OGUNQUIT Neighboring Ogunquit is often considered one of the best beaches in Maine and New England. The 3.5 miles of fine white sand with natural dunes make it a picture perfect spot for your Maine visit. Dogs are permitted on Ogunquit Beach only from October 1st to March 31st. You can find some other beaches in York and Wells that allow dogs during the summer, but usually before 8 AM and after 6 PM. You can easily walk around the downtown village of Ogunquit

LODGE AT KENNEBUNK
When in southern Maine, or the Kennebunks, the place to stay is The Lodge at Kennebunk; known as the affordable alternative. If you are considering vacationing or traveling with your family pet (dog, cat or even a monkey) the Lodge at Kennebunk is the place to stay (yes, that is correct, a chimpanzee stayed there). The Lodge at Kennebunk is situated on 8 acres and is centrally located within a ten-minute drive from the Kennebunk beaches, 20 minutes from Ogunquit and 1/4 mile from The Eastern Trail. All these places are wonderfully pet-friendly. The Eastern trail is the perfect place to walk, or run, alone or with your pets because it

GREATER PORTLAND
The biggest challenge facing the visitor to Maine’s Greater Portland area is deciding what to do first. Should you take a delightful harbor cruise to see the lighthouses dotting Casco Bay? Go on a shopping spree to the malls, designer outlets, craft and pottery stores?. FidoFriendly Magazine selected Portland as one of the “50 Best of the Best in the Dog World.” Portland’s major artery, Congress Street, will bring you to museums, art galleries, antique shops, studios and theaters. You’ll find that walking around Portland is leisurely leading you from the downtown area to the lure of the waterfront and to nearby parks. Both historic and hip, the Port is where you can admire Maine’s largest working waterfront, enjoy live entertainment
at popular pubs, or browse through shopping boutiques for everything from organic dog biscuits to imported spices to fine apparel. As for where to stay, if you prefer to lodge somewhat outside of Portland proper, the surrounding towns of Cape Elizabeth, South Portland, Falmouth, Freeport, Yarmouth, Westbrook and Scarborough all boast an assortment of comfortable accommodations. Many now welcome pets so you don’t want to leave Fido at home! There are at least a dozen restaurants in Portland and the surrounding areas that allow dogs at sidewalk café settings, outside decks, and on porches. Some quaint retail shops are known to allow pets if you ask before you enter.

MIDCOAST To the Maine visitor who prefers boating to beach bumming, there is no better region to explore than the Midcoast. The shoreline along this area—from Brunswick and Harpswell to Belfast and Bucksport—is dramatic, and reflective of Maine’s rich maritime history. Unlike the sandy seashores of Southern Maine, this region features a rougher, rockier coastline more in keeping with Hollywood’s picture of the Pine Tree State. Comprised of thousands of peninsulas, inlets, coves, harbors and islands, Midcoast is a magnet for shipping, sailing and boat building. Excursion boats of all shapes and sizes, from windjammers to working lobster boats, offer passengers, and often their pets, close encounters with whales, seals, seabirds and lighthouses.
14
Here you will find quaint fishing villages to explore, historic sites, museums—the Maine Maritime Museum is especially engrossing— and of course plenty of lovely shops, restaurants and wineries to investigate. And although early settlers to the Midcoast area focused primarily on building Maine’s fishing and boatbuilding industries, they also built dozens of majestic sea captains’ mansions, many of which are open for touring. Throughout the Midcoast region, summer means strawberry, blueberry and lobster festivals and there are farmers’ markets cropping up in almost every town. Camden and Rockland are the sites of two of the larger of these.

BOOTHBAY HARBOR MIDCOAST
There are miles of hiking trails just waiting to be discovered that offer everything from relaxed strolls to challenging hikes in Boothbay Harbor. Spend a peaceful afternoon amid stunning gardens or at a tranquil park, or exploring the seaside village and all its charm. With a long history of fishing, ice cutting, shipbuilding, and lumber as local industries in the 18th and 19th century, Boothbay is the largest boating harbor north of Boston and is sometimes called the boating capital of New England. Take a tour of one of the lighthouses in the area or sign up for an excursion on one of the sightseeing tours.
MAINE’S PREMIER DESTINATION BREWERY & TAP HOUSE
Particular favorites are the dolphin and whale watching excursions or the puffin cruises that seek out the unusual looking birds. The Boothbay Railway Village offers rides on an authentic steam locomotive that winds its way around a recreated Maine coastal village. You’ll learn about the technology of steam engines and automobiles and you might even score a ride in one of the Railway’s Ford Model Ts. Here you’ll also find the Maine Botanical Gardens, where the landscape is spectacular with many varied gardens to view. The gardens change with the season so multiple visits bring new floral experiences each time. Dogs are allowed in the

Just a stone’s throw from Rockland are plenty of dog-friendly places to hike in neighboring communities such as Thomaston, Camden, Hope and Lincolnville. Many local hotels and even a few restaurants allow dogs. There are doggie day cares where you can leave your pet for the day if you plan on visiting the local museums, like The Farnsworth or the Owls Head Transportation Museum, and attractions. You can also hike at nearby Camden Hills State Park where an array of trails rewards you with spectacular panoramas of the area. DOWNEAST & ACADIA
Mount Desert Island, Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor and Cadillac Mountain—these are the breathtakingly beautiful destinations that call most visitors to the Downeast region of Maine. Natives and visitors alike know, however, that there is more to see and do in this area, a lot more!
For a great view of the Bar Harbor area, take Shore Path, which starts near the town pier and continues along the eastern shore. Bar Island, which you can walk to at low tide, gives you a spectacular view when you look back toward Bar Harbor with the towering mountain in the background.
The residents of Downeast Maine often claim to be the “real Mainers”. They welcome visitors with true down-home hospitality, in locales such as the twin cities of Bangor and Brewer, Bucksport, Ellsworth, Trenton, Southwest Harbor, Northeast Harbor, Deer Isle, Blue Hill, Stonington, Machias, Calais, Eastport, Lubec and Prospect Harbor.
Bar Harbor is home to College of the Atlantic where you can visit the George B. Dorr Museum of Natural History that investigates, interprets, and displays the natural world of Maine.

DOWNEAST & ACADIA
You can walk, hike, and bike just about anywhere, which makes the Bar Harbor area a destination not to be missed on your visit to Maine. Downtown businesses care enough for Fido to keep water bowls filled outside their door. The area is well known for its pet-friendliness … many activities (like day cruises) allow pets and pet-friendly hotels pepper the island.
ACADIA Acadia National Park scores high marks for dog-friendliness. Dogs are allowed on most of the 120 miles of hiking trails and 45 miles of carriage trails, as long as they are on a leash not more than six-feet long. Dogs are not allowed on sand beaches, in
public buildings or on park ranger tours. Specific trails where dogs are not allowed for safety reasons include the Ladder Trail, the Precipice, Beehive, South Bubble Ridge, Jordan Cliffs and Beech Cliffs Ladder Trail. One exception to Acadia’s leash rule is a privately owned section of the park near Seal Harbor, called Little Long Pond, where dogs can run and play off-leash, as well as swim in the pond. A dog owner’s gem and tail-wagging favorite, local canine fanatics call Little Long Pond the dog park of Acadia. WESTERN MAINE
BETHEL & BRIDGTON Situated in the Androscoggin River valley surrounded by some of the highest mountains in Maine, Bethel was first settled in 1768. Now a quiet resort town, it is full of quaint shops and tranquil streets where visitors can enjoy a casual stroll to experience its New England village charm. Year round recreation abounds with the likes of hiking, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, and golf in the spring and summer. The fall foliage in the area is among the best in Maine. Grafton Notch State Parks offer wonderful opportunities to commune with nature. Nearby and convenient access will bring you to areas around the Appalachian Trail for hikes and bird watching. And you can literally find gems in Bethel. There are places that offer mining excursions in search of mica, beryl, quartz, and tourmaline, Maine treasures that are plentiful in the area. Lakes and rolling hills surround Bridgton, which is a haven for outdoor recreation. Long Lake, Highland Lake and Moose Pond are well known stops for boating, canoeing, kayaking, fishing and other water sports. You’ll find plenty of public beaches and public access to these Maine treasures. If hiking is your interest, take a jaunt to the top of Pleasant Mountain where you’ll get a choice view of the natural beauty of the surrounding area. You’ll enjoy a stroll downtown where you’ll find gift shops, antique and craft stores, restaurants and specialty shops. 24
Walk through Pondicherry Park, a 66-acre nature preserve in the center of town. The wood chipped pathway leads you deep into the park where there are signs of beaver, deer, mink, woodpeckers, and spotted salamanders.
RANGELEY & OQUOSSOC This resort area of 99 percent forest and water provides ideal vacations in all four season of the year. With more than 110 clear lakes, ponds, and streams, thousands of acres of untamed timberland filled with wildlife and plant life you’ll always find an adventure waiting for you and your pet. In lakes, ponds, rivers and streams you can fish for prized land locked salmon, trout, bass and perch. For bird watching visit the Audubon Society’s 100-acre bird sanctuary on Hunter Cover. Year round, there is no lack of outdoor sports and activities to pick from and an abundance of places to recreate with you furry family member. The hills provide miles of scenic hiking trails including a rugged section of the Appalachian Trail. You have plenty of water sports such as canoeing, kayaking, water skiing and fishing. If hitting the links is what you’re looking for you’ll find that in Rangeley as well. Winter brings Nordic and alpine skiing, snowmobiling and ice fishing. Expect the foliage season to peak from late September to mid-October. Thousands of acres of woodland provide you with rolling hills filled with breathtaking colors and beauty.

If you want to get away from it all and really get away, consider a trip to the Maine Highlands with our pet. About a five-hour drive from Portland, you’ll find yourself in the ultimate wilderness where woodlands outnumber houses and distances can be traveled without seeing a soul.
The Allagash Wilderness Waterway was established by the Maine Legislature in 1966 to preserve, protect, and enhance the natural beauty, character, and habitat of a unique area. It is a magnificent, 92-mile-long ribbon of lakes, ponds, rivers, and streams winding through the heart of northern Maine’s vast commercial forests. Guided excursions are available in the Maine Highlands for whitewater rafting, canoeing or kayaking deep into the wilderness, fresh water fishing, mountain biking, rock-climbing or hunting. Visit Lincoln, Greenville or Millinocket to shop or to connect with the local town experience. Area residents have been welcoming visitors for ages and they know how to make you feel at home. We recommend you call ahead and make sure your excursion or lodging is pet-friendly if you plan to bring Fido along.

CAMPING For more than 8 decades Maine has been able to call itself “Vacationland.” The best of the outdoors is offered here in Maine, and no matter the reason or the season, there will never be a shortage of outdoors to enjoy in Maine. Maine’s reputation as the great outdoors allows campgrounds to offer every style of camping available today and there are several. It simply depends on one thing, you and what you are looking to get out of your Maine camping experience. When beginning your search, it may be smart to start with a quick review of camping styles to see which suits your specific needs. Bring along your pet and enjoy your Maine camping vacation with your entire family! Pets are often an important part of camping families. Many campgrounds in Maine allow pets. Some campgrounds just allow small dogs, while other campgrounds allow dogs of all sizes as well as other pets. Management has to be sensitive to non-pet owners’ comfort levels when formulating their rules for their properties. Please call ahead to be sure the campground you 26
choose has a pet policy that works for you. You are better off knowing in advance than arriving and finding your pet is unwelcome or will incur extra charges of which you weren’t previously aware. Here are some examples of rules you might expect: 1. Say yes to the leash! Keep pets on a short leash at all times. 2. Make sure your pet has some type of identification on him in case he should stray away from camp. 3. Carry proof of vaccinations. 4. If you leave, take your pet with you. 5. Pick up after your pet and properly dispose of all pet waste in trash receptacles. 6. You are responsible for your pet’s behavior. 7. For health and safety reasons pets are not allowed in pool and playground areas. Happy Camping! Kathy Dyer, Executive Director, Maine Campground Owners Association CampMaine.com

KENNELS, DAYCARES & SITTERS If you’ve come to Maine with your pet, but you want to take a day trip or a hike somewhere that doesn’t allow them to come along, what do you do? Especially if your outing will keep you away overnight, you may need to find a boarding kennel, daycare or pet sitter. According to the ASPCA, here are a few things to avoid when selecting a boarding facility ... Overcrowding | Limited access (pet guardians should be allowed to visit their pet at any time) | Unwillingness to meet your pet’s needs | Poor customer service | Pets left unattended. According to one expert, kennel designer Kay Key, suggests you ask the
following questions. Does the kennel smell? • Is the kennel constantly noisy? • If the kennel accepts dogs that are not neutered or spayed, are they kept separate? • Can you see where your dog will be staying? • Is the kennel in good repair? • Are there newspapers, paper shavings or gravel on the floor? • Is there bedding in both the sleeping area and the run? • Is proof of vaccination required? • Is the kennel heated and/or air conditioned? If boarding, don’t forget to label what you leave with indelible ink, including bedding, toys, food if your dog has a special diet, medications, proof of vaccinations, and contact information,

including how to reach your veterinarian in case of emergency. Sometimes though, kennels and daycares may not be the right fit (if your pet isn’t spayed or neutered; or if they don’t like being around other animals,
etc.). In those cases individual pet sitters are a wonderful option. Some lodging places in Maine will offer a list of preferred kennels, daycares and pet sitters in their area so be sure to ask for recommendations when booking your stay.

CROSS COUNTRY SKIING So, you want to go cross-country skiing? So does your pooch (sans skis, of course). Dogs simply love running on cross-country ski trails, especially the groomed ones. But not all cross-country ski areas welcome Fido. In fact, most don’t. So the question becomes where to go cross-country skiing with dogs. It’s sometimes hard to remember, but not everyone loves your dog as much as you do. Some cross country ski areas post their dog policy prominently on their website. We felt that the policy posted on the Memphremagog Ski Touring Trails’ website (mstf. net) captured the essence of what most of these policies say, and are reprinting with permission:
DOG POLICY: Dogs are allowed on Memphremagog Ski Touring Trails but inconsiderate dog owners are not. Your “always 42
friendly” pooch may not be seen as such by the 5 year-old they bound up to; unless your dog never gets rambunctious or hostile to other dogs, they should be on a leash. Also, PLEASE take the time to kick any dog mess OFF the trails. There it is in a nutshell. If you want you and your dog welcome in the future, make sure he’s a good citizen on the trails. Remember, you and your dog can be asked to leave at any time, even if you paid for a full day ticket, so obey any rules and use common courtesy. Here is a list of MAINE cross-country ski areas that welcome dogs: Bethel Village Trails: 1km dog trail Carter’s XC Ski Centers (Bethel and Oxford): “We do allow dogs on the entire trail system, but we charge a trail fee ($15) for the dogs. We sometimes make exceptions with small dogs: 2 for $15.00. Later in the
petMAINE 2018: The Ultimate Guide To Enjoying Maine With Your Pets
Five Fields Farm: 20km dog trails Harris Farm XC Ski Center: 40km of dog trails. Allows dogs on any trails midweek, non-holiday only (“as long as the snow is not too soft”).
CROSS COUNTRY SKIING
season: $10.00. Most people love the idea of taking their dog out on all the trails and don’t mind paying.” Editor’s note: Dogs can do a lot of damage to groomed trails by leaving punching holes with each step, so it absolutely makes sense for XC areas to charge a fee to cover the extra work associated with allowing them.
Carrabasset Valley Narrow Gauge Recreation Trail: Allows dogs on 6 miles of groomed trail. Rangeley Lakes Trails Center: Allows dogs only on ungroomed snowshoe trails. Quarry Road Recreation Area: One short dog trail separate from main trail network. Article by easternslopes.com

DAY HIKES From brief hikes to challenging ones, Maine has it all. Here are a few to consider during your visit to Maine
BRADBURY MOUNTAIN STATE PARK – POWNAL CENTER Total route 1.3 miles Here’s a hike on a woodland loop that leads to the summit of a lone mountain. This is a quiet, attractive park in southern Maine, not far from several other trailheads. Woodland campsites here offer relative seclusion and the trails are rarely crowded. General location: Inland from North Yarmouth in Cumberland County.
RING AND BLUEBERRY BUFF TRAILS- YORK Total route 1.8 miles Here’s a climb through mixed woods past ledge outlooks to the 691-foot summit for distant views of the Atlantic coast. The town of York owns the crown of 180 acres. Trails are designated for various recreational 46
activities; a few are designated for hiking only. A lodge at the summit may be rented for family picnics, gatherings, and group programs. Special Features: There are wonderful views from ledges halfway up trail and there’s the mountain top lodge.
JORDAN POND PATH (JORDAN POND SHORE TRAIL) – NORTHEAST HARBOR Total route 3.3 miles On this hike you will have expansive views of Jordan Pond, the Bubbles, and Jordan Cliffs, as well as a chance to see ducks or watch kayakers. The graded gravel path on the east side of the pond is particularly easy, and the 4,000 feet of log bridges on the west side help smooth the way over what would otherwise be a potentially wet, rocky, and root-filled trail.

DAY HIKES
BALD ROCK MOUNTAIN CAMDEN Total route 3.6 miles You’ll experience a day hike to the summit of a mountain overlooking the upper reaches of Penobscot Bay where the mountain meets the sea. The view is spectacular and usually not crowded. A shelter near the summit is suitable for an overnight stay though you need to check with park officials in advance. General location: Camden Hills State Park west of Lincolnville Beach and north of Camden in Knox and Waldo Counties in midcoast Maine.
MOUNT KATAHDIN VIA THE KNIFE EDGE- MILLINOCKET Total route 9.5 miles This is a challenging day hike to the top of Mount Katahdin along a granite ridge called the Knife Edge. This is one of the most spectacular hikes in the east, with views of Moosehead Lake, the Penobscot River, and the mountains and hills of Acadia National
Park and Camden Hills State Park. Mount Katahdin is the final stop on the northern section of the Appalachian Trail. General location: Mount Katahdin is in the southern part of Baxter State Park, in Piscataquis County central Maine. The trailhead is a 45-minute drive from the town of Millinocket.
MARGINAL WAY – OGUNQUIT Total route 1 mile This is a village hike along a mile-long section on the Atlantic Ocean. Marginal Way is probably the most popular village walk in Maine. The village of Ogunquit is a famous tourist town, full of curio shops and fine restaurants. The walk along Marginal Way will give you a leisurely jaunt. The ocean views here are spectacular. General location: The town of Ogunquit is about 18 miles north of the New Hampshire border, in York County.

DOG PARK ETIQUETTE Most of Maine’s dog-friendly beaches are peaceful places. So too are Maine’s dog parks. This is mostly due to the fact that park and beach pet etiquette is well known, well publicized, usually well posted and encouraged by all throughout the state. The two most important things to remember are that these places are shared properties— and the goal when visiting is to have fun! Both require that you pay attention to your companion at all times, and that you get along with other pets and their owners. • According to Maine statute, anyone who uses a dog park does so at his or her own risk. (This is true for any recreational area in Maine open to the public.) • Also according to Maine law, any damage or injury caused by a pet is the responsibility of the owner. • Disposing of your dog’s waste swiftly is a must! Some parks have disposable bags available; 48
others do not. Always bring your own, just in case. • Dogs must be supervised at all times, even when they are offleash. • When off-leash, dogs must still be under voice control. • If your dog becomes aggressive or hyperactive or in some other way disruptive, it’s your responsibility to remove him or her from the park. • Dogs must be leashed while entering or exiting the park. • Most parks require that dogs carry proper identification, license and rabies tags. • Female dogs in heat are typically prohibited from parks. Although tough to prohibit, “mounting” by dogs should be broken up immediately when it occurs. Some parks have sources of water for pets. Bring a bottle for your dog to be on the safe side. These

BEACH RULES
same guidelines apply to Maine’s pet-friendly beaches. What’s most important at these sites is to observe regulations regarding when during the day and during the year dogs are allowed off-leash.
MAINE STATE PARK RULES: Please observe the following rules when on state-controlled land such as the state parks. For more information, visit www.maine.gov/doc/parks/ programs • Pets must be on a leash not exceeding four feet in length and must not be left unattended. • No pets are allowed on state park beaches. • Pet owners must immediately clean up fecal deposits left by their pets. • No pets are allowed in Sebago Lake State Park Campground or Baxter State Park.
THINGS TO REMEMBER AT THE BEACH: 1. Not all dogs can swim. Find some quiet water and give your dog a chance to show you if he can swim or not by encouraging him to follow you. 2. Drinking salt water is a bad idea. So, pack plenty of water to keep you both hydrated. 3. Invest in a life vest. Waves, current, and rip tides can quickly exhaust your dog, and that can be deadly. 4. Use sunscreen. Get a sunscreen specially formulated for dogs. 5. Beware of submerged dangers. 6. Don’t overdo it. 7. Cold water can hurt. 8. Rinse thoroughly.
