The s la b s used fo r th e se jobs w e r e r e j e c t s f r o m the flo or. E a r l y in J a n u a r y I m oved into a m u ch l a r g e r and m o r e convincing old log cabin in a r e m o t e cany on w h e re 1 now live. T h e r e w as little 1 could do outside in the depths of w i n te r but by next w in te r I will have r e chinked the logs with adobe and c e m e n t . The floor of this cabin is m u ch m o r e solid a l though with plenty of gaps between the planks. T h e s e I stuffed with s t r i p s of old c a r p e t and u n d e rf e l t , then laid a c a r p e t o v e r the top, a ll c o u r t e s y of a village dump in the M o r e n o V alley . I will put down a new flo o r a s b efo re but due to the c o m p a r a t i v e s o l i d n e s s of the floor in this cabin I will u se one by fo u rs in stead of two by s i x e s . The s a m e m a t e r i a l m a y be used to c r e a t e a fals e ceilin g nailed up to the roof b e a m s and backed by p l a s t i c o r c a r d b o a r d . T h is should enable me to p e r f o r m the s h o rt walk f r o m the stove to my t y p e w r i t e r without f r e e z i n g to death on the way. A p r e d e c e s s o r has a l r e a d y panelled the i n t e r i o r w alls with v e r t i c a l ro ughsaw n two by six planks and v e r y nice they look. I think I will take them down, at l e a s t along the n orth w all, put m o r e insulation behind th em , then nail them up again . T h e r e is one oth e r ad van tage to c r a m ming quite a few m illends into o n e 's m o u n tain h o m e. I a lw a y s feel that if I b e c a m e ill o r injured in s e v e r e w e a t h e r , and I a m a long way fr o m help, I could alw ay s t e a r up the flo or and panelling and w h a t e v e r and burn it in the s to v e .
