Important Facts about Vocational Nursing Programs Nurses who undergo courses at vocational nursing schools are licensed to serve as vocational nurses and they expected to take care of sick or injured patients under the guidance of doctors and registered nurses. Their duties include administering medicine to the bed-ridden patients, helping patients in their movements, collecting blood, urine and other samples for clinical tests and to discharge all other basic nursing duties. A student who enrolls for a course at vocational nursing schools will be awarded a completion certificate. The program is usually of 2-3 semester duration. These vocational nursing courses are available in many universities, vocational training institutes as also in some technical colleges. Few institutions insist on the students complete a course in basic biology and/or other health sciences. People who are mere job seekers and thinking of employment –oriented training without the right attitude are advised not to pursue vocational nursing courses. Having said that, it may be pointed out that one major advantage of opting for a vocational nursing course is it will take about a year to finish the course and you can thereafter work and earn even before you have completed the course. There is a great demand for LVN (Licensed Vocational Nurses) and the employment opportunities are numerous. The Licensed Vocational Nurses can certainly look forward to a promising career. However, financial rewards alone should not be your only goal when you take up nursing as a career. Getting jobs in hospitals may be tough as there is invariably stiff competition as the number of hospital jobs for licensed practical nurses are limited. However, there is tremendous employment growth in other health care industries and you may never remain unemployed after acquiring the certificate. When you choose to pursue a course at vocational nursing institutes, please ensure that the course is approved by the state board of nursing or else you will be left in the lurch after completing your studies. The tuition fess for a nursing program is reasonably high but you can always obtain financial aid from the institution where you are studying.
