The 2023 R.H. Boyd catalog is dedicated to the life and legacy of our chairman emeritus and fourth-generation president/ CEO, Dr. T. B. Boyd III. Dr. Boyd served the company for over fifty years, serving as the president/CEO for thirty-eight of those years. He committed his life to Christ and drawing others into the Kingdom through providing educational resources for churches and individuals.
One of Dr. Boyd’s most notable successes was the launch of The New National Baptist Hymnal. This hymnbook remains one of the most iconic product offerings at the company. Additionally, throughout his career, Dr. Boyd worked vigorously to develop and expand a variety of programs to enhance the growth and success of resources for children and youth. Not only did he implement age-appropriate Christian education resources such as Teen Scene, Seekers for Jesus, Adventurers with Jesus, Growing with Jesus, Young Learners, and the Picture Lesson Cards, but he also provided opportunities for young people to obtain leadership training in the Youth Congress via Drill and Dance Team ministries, as well as the National Oratorical Contest for high school juniors and seniors. Dr. Boyd provided resources for many to have access to higher education through scholarships and grants from the R.H. Boyd Family Endowment Fund.
This is an exciting year for R.H. Boyd! For nearly 127 years, our organization has equipped leaders with tools to build communities, embolden generations of scholars, and write their stories. As we continue the mission of our founder and my great-great-grandfather, Rev. Dr. Richard Henry Boyd, our team takes pride in spreading the Word of God, providing high quality services, and curating a broad spectrum of products to fit the unique needs of our readers.
It is my hope that this year’s catalog will provide our customers with curriculum, books for youth, apparel, worship resources, scholarship opportunities, and more to achieve your personal or organizational goals and needs. Additionally, there are more items to discover on our website, www.rhboyd.com, and on our social media accounts on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.
I encourage you to join us for our premier leadership and training conference, the Vision Conference™ with our historic institution, the National Baptist Congress, to learn about Christian education, visionary leadership with an emphasis on urban leadership and ministry, and more. This conference will be held in Nashville, Tennessee, June 15–17, 2023. To learn more, visit www.visonconference.org
,Lastly, please consider supporting our scholarship and grant program through the Boyd Family Endowment Fund. Through this charitable pursuit, we have been able to support students to achieve their dreams of higher education at distinguished colleges and universities across the country. This year, we will host the second annual Legacy Ball to support the Boyd Family Endowment Fund. To learn more about this black-tie affair, please visit www.rhboyd.com/legacyball.
Thank you for your continued support throughout the generations.

The Fannie Battle Day Home is one of the oldest non-profit childcare centers in Middle Tennessee, founded in 1891, after seeing a need for childcare so parents could work. Their mission continues today so that parents pursuing fulltime work will not resort to leaving their child in an unlicensed facility, in unsafe care, or home alone.
The Hope Clinic for Women in Nashville was founded in 1983 to provide a variety of services to low- income women to meet critical needs. Statistics show that African-American women have children of lower birth rate than white women and that infant mortality is three times greater among African-American women. Further, Black women are more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes due to a lack of medical services.

We invite you to join in a historic opportunity to partner with us in the renovation of the Boyd House on the campus of Fisk University. The home was originally owned by Dr. Henry Allen Boyd, second-generation leader of the National Baptist Publishing Board (NBPB), now R.H. Boyd, and his wife Georgia Bradford Boyd, a suffragist and a prominent community voice for the advancement of women’s and children’s issues.
With your support we continue a nationwide campaign of $1.4 million to restore this early-twentieth-century Edwardian-style home, which is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. The home is being renovated to create academic spaces, such as classrooms and a lecture hall, and to build opportunities to further the educational pursuits of students in business and entrepreneurship.
With your generous financial gift, we can restore the Historic Boyd House. Visit theboydhouse.org to make tax-deductible gifts and pledges toward this effort and to stay up to date on specific details about the restoration and preservation process.
This is an older image of the Boyd House. It is in current need of major repair and has sustained significant damage to the exterior. Dr. Henry Allen Boyd and his wife Mrs. Georgia Bradford Boyd.“The Negro must furnish his Sunday school with religious knowledge, his choirs with music, and his firesides and parlors with wholesome literature, written and manufactured by his own energy… Whatever is taught in the Sunday schools of this generation will be the doctrine of the church in the next generation.” —
Dr. Richard Henry BoydDr. Richard Henry Boyd was a pioneering clergyman, religious organizer, educator, banker, and inspiring leader. He was a strategic problem solver and sought to provide resources and business solutions to freedmen and freedwomen during the late 1800s and early 1900s. In 1896 he founded the National Baptist Publishing Board (NBPB), now known as the R.H. Boyd Publishing Corporation, in order to provide Christian education and supplies to churches across the country. He did so to give a platform to the Black voice in the religious experience, independent of the confines of the oppressor. His work was focused on training Black Baptist missionaries, teachers, and leaders using Christian education materials written by qualified Black scholars.
Dr. Boyd believed that business enterprise and economic freedom were essential for Black families to truly gain
independence. In 1902, Dr. Boyd and colleagues formed the National Baptist Church Supply Company. In 1904, he was one of the founders of the One Cent Savings and Trust Company, now known as Citizens Saving and Trust Bank in Nashville, TN. He also founded the Negro Doll Company (1905), the National Baptist Congress (1906), Union Transportation Streetcar Company (1906), the Nashville Globe (1906), Nashville Colored Young Men’s Christian Association (1917), and many other entities. The core of each business reflected needs of the time—innovation and entrepreneurship intersected to create opportunities and advancement for the community at large.
Within ten years of founding the National Baptist Publishing Board, the company became the largest and most notable Black publishing enterprise with an impressive list of publications. Dr. Boyd was a leader in the fight for civil rights, and he also promoted homeownership, missionary work, and travel among Black people. His dedication to elevating the position of Black people in multiple areas of life, in addition to religious studies, solidifies his place in history as one of the pioneering leaders of the time.
His lasting legacy, entrepreneurial spirit, and mission have been the backbone of the work that R.H. Boyd continues to this day.
“Because the National Baptist Publishing Board is in operation for the sole purpose of giving service to the race and denomination, every phase of religious life has been considered. The interest of the institution is naturally centered on the things pertaining to religion and spirituality, and that interest is deep and abiding. Service is the keynote of the institution.”
— Dr. Henry Allen Boyd
Dr. Henry Allen Boyd served alongside Dr. Richard Henry Boyd as assistant secretary of NBPB and the National Baptist Congress, as well as editor of the Union Review and the Nashville Globe newspapers, among many other ventures. Upon Dr. R. H. Boyd’s death in 1922, Henry Allen Boyd became the leader of NBPB, National Baptist Congress, and Citizens Bank. He served on many boards, including Meharry Medical College and Fisk University, and he played a crucial role in the founding of Tennessee A & I State College, now known as Tennessee State University.
Dr. Henry Allen Boyd restructured the National Baptist Congress format, and a curriculum was developed to meet the critical social and religious needs of the period. The Congress advanced profoundly under his leadership and attained new
growth during each year of the Great Depression. Dr. H. A. Boyd also expanded the product offerings of the NBPB to include an extensive array of products, such as certificates, songbooks, record books, and educational courses.
By 1934, NBPB served over 20,000 churches and Sunday schools across the country and the world. Citizens Bank continued to grow as well, reaching $1 million in capital assets by 1944. Boyd continued to serve as a denominational leader, speaker, and advocate for entrepreneurial advances. His charisma and hospitality were the key to his success and left a lasting impact for all to witness. Under his leadership, the institutions survived the depression, world wars, conflict, opposition, growth, and competition.
“Such meetings will result in clarifying the purpose and program of the Congress, and will enable us to launch a greater unified effort through our newly adopted program of Christian education in the Sunday School and Baptist Training Union Congress, as we seek to reach and supply the needs of many unreached and unenlisted men, women, and children throughout our nation.”
— Dr. T. B. Boyd, Jr.In May of 1959, after the passing of Dr. Henry Allen Boyd, Dr. T. B. Boyd, Jr. assumed leadership of the NBPB, the National Baptist Congress, Citizens Banks, and other entities. Dr. Boyd was a graduate of Tennessee A & I State College, member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., and served on various boards and commissions throughout the city. Upon graduating from college in 1940, Dr. Boyd served in the Army during WWII. He also served as pastor of Greater Salem Baptist Church in Louisville, Kentucky.
During the turbulent decade of the 1960s, Dr. Boyd’s vision was to provide church leaders who were often bypassed by standard curricula with new Christian ideas and techniques. Dr. Boyd also sought to facilitate even greater spiritual growth of Congress participants. Dr. Boyd was a supporter of the Civil
Rights Movement, and he hosted Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who served as a speaker at the 1960 session of the National Baptist Congress in Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Boyd called for unity and the uplift of Black people in the Baptist denomination, which was deeply divided at the time because of theological disputes and cultural upheaval.
Dr. Boyd’s focus on product development, acquisition of new equipment, and the planning of a new headquarters were pivotal in the success of the companies.
“It is a day of peace, a day of tranquility, a day of progress, and a day of recommitment to the very principles our forefathers laid down before us. Although the mantel has fallen on my shoulders, I will not let it hit the ground.” —
Dr. T. B. Boyd IIIIn April 1979, Dr. T. B. Boyd, Jr. passed away, and his eldest son, Dr. T. B. Boyd III, was appointed by the Board to assume command of the institution. Dr. Boyd III began to lead with unsurpassed vigor and devotion, and the NBPB and the Congress began to grow at a phenomenal rate. Dr. Boyd grew up in the company, working throughout high school and college. Upon graduating from Tennessee State University, Dr. Boyd began working full time as the personnel director, working his way up through the company to gain a full understanding of all processes.
Dr. Boyd focused on growth and innovation. One of his first major tasks included designing and building the new corporate headquarters, completed in 1974, fully equipped with the latest technology, production mechanisms, and safety measures. One of his most notable successes was the launch of The New National Baptist Hymnal, 21st Century Edition. This hymnal is still one of the most iconic product offerings at the company. With more than 20,000 people attending the annual Congresses in the 1980s, Dr. T. B. Boyd III inspired an innovative dimension
of the Congress structure—the Youth Congress Division— designed for children, youth, and young adults, ages 4 through 24. The Youth Congress includes two dynamic ministries: youth drill teams and dance ministry. Both of these ministries are designed to enhance the Church’s spiritual growth and development of its younger generation.
“Children are our greatest asset and our most important investment. We must prioritize and make sure that our children are our number one priority. We have no greater resource than our youth, no greater task than the orientation of molding of the young people.”
—Dr. T. B. Boyd IIIHis commitment to youth and education was continued with the founding of the Boyd Family Endowment Fund, which provides scholarships and grants to students and community organizations. Dr. Boyd is also one of the founding visionaries and board members of the new National Museum of African American Music (NMAAM) in Nashville, Tennessee, as well as a founding major donor for the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) in Washington, D.C.’s Smithsonian Institute. The Boyd Family, R.H. Boyd, and Citizens Bank have exhibits in both NMAAM and NMAAHC.
Dr. Boyd was civically engaged, and his affiliations include Kappa Alpha Psi, Fraternity, Inc., Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity, Chairman Emeritus of Citizens Bank, and the former vicechairman of the Board of Trustees at Meharry Medical College. He was a locally and nationally recognized leader and speaker.
“I stand as the proud leader of an organization that has lent its voice to positively uplifting the narrative of Black people. There is no greater time than the present to be a storyteller and shape the trajectory of this experience. Through R.H. Boyd, we have a multitude of resources that showcase the beauty and diversity of the Black voice. Since its founding by my great-great-grandfather in 1896, we have been an active supporter of and participant in the liberation of our people's voice for five generations, and now is not the time to rest on our laurels.”
— Dr. LaDonna BoydAfter guiding the trajectory of R.H. Boyd for four decades, Dr. T. B. Boyd III retired on October 27, 2017 and passed the mantle of leadership to his eldest daughter LaDonna, who had been serving the company as chief operating officer.
As president/CEO, Dr. Boyd is shaping and leading the company’s efforts to broaden its scope and offerings for 21st century needs. With a targeted focus on product development, technology, commercial printing opportunities, and author resources, Dr. Boyd prepared for a number of years to take the reins as a CEO— cultivating a wide range of skills necessary to lead R.H. Boyd through a new generation.
She is a graduate of Spelman College, earning a bachelor’s degree in economics, and Tennessee State University, where she completed a Master of Business Administration degree with a concentration in finance. She completed her Doctor of Education degree in Organizational Leadership at Pepperdine University She is committed to continued professional development, including

“It is an honor to carry on the legacy of my ancestors, spreading the message of Jesus Christ through the written word. We are committed to being a leader in providing Christian and inspirational resources for churches and communities across the world.”
— Dr. LaDonna BoydThe vision for R.H. Boyd is to be the leading resource for storytelling through print, multimedia channels, data collection, events, and serving as industry experts. R.H. Boyd is also positioned to assist in the alleviation of social concerns and social injustices, in addition to fulfilling the need for Christian education, commercial printing, and educational resources.
“As a publishing company, we are storytellers. We have the ability to shape the minds and experiences of the masses. As a Christian company, we have the significant responsibility and opportunity to draw people into the Kingdom through the written word.” —

Life, Lessons, and Leadership
H. H. Leonards
Foreword by Bishop Vashti Murphy McKenzie
Rosa Parks Beyond the Bus: Life, Lessons, and Leadership is a collection of inspiring and instructive memories compiled from the decade that author H. H. Leonards opened her Washington, DC residence to Mrs. Parks as her home away from home. During those years, H. H. Leonards was able to know the heart, mind, and spirit of the woman who refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery, Alabama city bus on December 1, 1955. The author uses the book as a forum to share her remembrances, both delightful and somber, in a way that offers readers an intimate and personal glimpse into the personhood of Mrs. Parks. Rosa Parks Beyond the Bus is a personal look into Mrs. Parks’ life, her thoughts, her beliefs, and her immense wisdom that moved people—from world leaders Nelson Mandela, Deepak Chopra, and Pope John Paul II, to the smallest of children—to seek and revere her presence.

Drawing from his anti-racism curriculum, the Public Love Organizing and Training (PLOT) Project, Francois encourages us to move from a "colorblind" stance of mythic innocence to one that takes an honest account of our national history and acknowledges our complicity in racism as a prelude to anti-racist interventions.

”Just as I Am is my truth. It is me, plain and unvarnished, with the glitter and garland set aside. Here, I am indeed Cicely, the actress who has been blessed to grace the stage and screen for six decades. Yet I am also the church girl who once rarely spoke a word. I am the teenager who sought solace in the verses of the old hymn for which this book is named. I am a daughter and mother, a sister, and a friend. I am an observer of human nature and the dreamer of audacious dreams. I am a woman who has hurt as immeasurably as I have loved, a child of God divinely guided by His hand. And here in my ninth decade, I am a woman who, at long last, has something meaningful to say.”

Day 1: Don’t Keep Silent (Key Verse: Esther 4:16)
• Message: Some adults may think a person can be too young to make a difference. However, there are examples through our history of that not being true!
Day 2: Let My People Go (Key Verse: Exodus 9:1)
• Message: Standing up to bullies can be scary and hard. Also, standing up for both yourself and others takes practice! However, having courage is when you’re afraid but still do the right thing anyway.
Day 3: Go and Say (Key Verse: John 20:18) • Message: Resisting temptation to do wrong, such as judging others, giving in to greed, or “following the crowd” down a bad path, can sometimes be hard. Having determination and conviction to lead others to the right path takes courage and you will be rewarded.
Day 4: Let Me Speak to the People (Key Verses: Acts 22:14–15)
• Message: Sometimes, it can be scary when all eyes are on you. Self-doubt, worries about what your peers might think, and other such thoughts can keep some from expressing their praise for God.
Day 5: We Have an Advocate (Key Verse: 1 John 2:1)
• Message: He was the best leader who ever lived. Humility, compassion, truth were a few traits Jesus showed throughout His life.
