To our community,

Thank you for your generous support of our inaugural Legacy Ball last year! Your contribution and support made a significant impact on our organization and helped to ensure the success of our event. Your support enabled us to provide a memorable experience for our attendees and helped to raise awareness about our organization’s mission.

The Legacy Ball is an important celebration of the contributions and achievements of African Americans in Nashville and beyond and those that support our community. The event relies on the generous support of donors and sponsors to make it possible.

The proceeds benefit the R.H. Boyd Family Endowment Fund, which provides scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students seeking to better their communities and other non-profits with a targeted focus on elevating and supporting disenfranchised communities.

Your commitment to this cause is greatly appreciated, and we would be honored to have your support for the 2023 Legacy Ball. We value our partnerships and hope that we can work together to make a positive impact in our community through sponsorships, donations, and ticket and table sales.

If you are interested in supporting the Legacy Ball or learning more about the event and its sponsors, please reach out to our team via email at events@rhboyd.com or call us at 1-877-4RH-Boyd.

Thank you for your consideration.

Onward,

Friends,

It gives me great pleasure serving as the coordinator of the R.H. Boyd Family Endowment Fund. I have a feeling of fulfillment in knowing that I am a part of continuing a legacy that serves as a means of helping others and giving homage to our founder, Dr. Richard Henry Boyd and our family of successors. I embrace the opportunity to serve as endowment coordinator and humbly serve to fulfill the vision my husband, the late Dr. T. B. Boyd III had when he started the endowment in 1980. As a recipient myself in 1983, while matriculating at Tennessee State University, I truly understand the importance of having such a fund available to help defer the cost of tuition. Statistics today show graduates of historically black colleges and universities (HBCU’S) take on 32% more debt than their peers at other colleges. A Wall Street Journal analysis of Education Department data found that not only do alumni at HBCU’S take on more debt than graduates at public or nonprofit four-year schools, but due to the stress of financial strains the majority of graduates have not paid any loan debt in the first few years out of school. Upon graduation, 48% of Black students owe over twelve percent more than they borrowed. It was further noted that Black students owe an average of $25,000 more in student loans than white students, resulting in African-American students delaying the fruits of their labor of purchasing a home or starting a family.

The R.H. Boyd Family Endowment Fund, in accordance with the R.H. Boyd family of companies, strive to continue investing resources in churches, organizations, and deserving students to achieve goals and standards for the betterment of their communities. Our scholarships and grants promote knowledge of and participation in the richness of African-American heritage and culture in students, as well as increase the number of minority graduate degree holders in certain fields of study. It is our mission through five generations to continue our family legacy. I look forward to the continued success of the endowment and ask that you will continue supporting such a worthwhile endeavor. My goal is to sustain the endowment for generations to come.

Sincerely,

9 R.H. Boyd Family Endowment Fund

the Legacy Ball Proceeds Benefit the R.H. Boyd Family Endowment Fund

The R.H. Boyd Family Endowment Fund serves as a living memorial to our founder Dr. Richard Henry Boyd. Through the R.H. Boyd Company (a 501(c)(3) organization), this endowment fund invests resources in non-profit organizations, and deserving students to achieve goals and standards for the betterment of their communities. Our scholarships promote the knowledge of African-American heritage and seek to increase minority graduate degree holders in fields of study such as business and marketing, economics and finance, theology, journalism, history, and computer science.

Since 1981, the R.H. Boyd Family Endowment Fund has given more than $500,000 in scholarships to students at colleges and universities across the United States including Fisk University, Spelman College, University of Southern California, Pepperdine University, Morehouse College, Hampton University, Tennessee State University, American Baptist College, and many others. We have also provided grants for organizations such as Rejoice School of Ballet, Salama Urban Ministries, Hope Clinic for Women and more.

The Boyd Grant Recipients

The Rejoice School of Ballet, located in Nashville, is a program with the vision of giving children from low-income families a chance to break the cycle of generational poverty, lack of education, and lack of success. The program also strives to bring diverse racial, cultural, and economic backgrounds together in an authentic way.

The Fannie Battle Day Home is one of the oldest non-profit childcare centers in Middle Tennessee, founded in 1891, after seeing a need for childcare so parents could work. Their mission continues today so that parents pursuing full-time work will not resort to leaving their child in an unlicensed facility, in unsafe care, or home alone.

The Hope Clinic for Women in Nashville was founded in 1983 to provide a variety of services to low- income women to meet critical needs. Statistics show that African-American women have children of lower birth rate than white women and that infant mortality is three times greater among African-American women. Further, Black women are more likely to die from preg nancy-related causes due to a lack of medical services.

Ms. Aryn Wright-Thompson, attending Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia, and majoring in theater/English. Mrs. Taylor Epps of Nashville. She is pursuing her doctoral degree in business administration from Columbia State University in Orange Beach, Alabama. Mr. Jalani Patterson attening Grambling University in Lincoln Parish, Louisiana and majoring in business management. Ms. Ravyn Moore, attending the University of Tennessee–Chattanooga and majoring in business marketing.

Thank You to Our Previous Donors!

Many thanks to all of our Endowment Fund donors and supporters. We would not be able to do this work without your generosity and continued support!

The renovation of the historical Boyd House at Fisk University

We invite you to join in a historic opportunity to partner with us in the renovation of the Boyd House on the campus of Fisk University. The home was originally owned by Dr. Henry Allen Boyd, second-generation leader of the National Baptist Publishing Board (NBPB), now R.H. Boyd, and his wife Georgia Bradford Boyd, a suffragist and a prominent community voice for the advancement of women’s and children’s issues.

With your support we continue a nationwide campaign of $1.4 million to restore this early-twentieth-century Edwardian-style home, which is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. The home is being renovated to create academic spaces, such as classrooms and a lecture hall, and to build opportunities to further the educational pursuits of students in business, entrepreneurship, and other areas of study.

With your generous financial gift, we can restore the Historic Boyd House. Visit theboydhouse.org to make tax-deductible gifts and pledges toward this effort and to stay up to date on specific details about the restoration and preservation process.

The Legacy Ball

2022 Inaugural Celebration Highlights

Founded by Dr. LaDonna Boyd, the Legacy Ball was initiated in celebration of our 125th anniversary in June 2022. The inaugural Ball was a momentous occasion marked by fellowship with family, friends, community partners, and more.

This event, hosted by R.H. Boyd Company (a 501(c)(3) organization), benefitted the R.H. Boyd Family Endowment Fund which provides scholarships, grants, and other resources for students and community programming. We are grateful to our many sponsors, attendees, and partners who helped us raise $50,000 for the Endowment Fund at this event.

The inaugural Legacy Ball was held at the Sheraton Grand in Downtown Nashville. Throughout the night, guests heard from previous R.H. Boyd Endowment Fund grant and scholarship recipients, enjoyed performances from gospel artist Miranda Curtis and the Karlton Taylor Trio, and danced into the evening with the talented musical duo, Louis York.

Additionally, we honored distinguished members of our community with the R.H. Boyd Humanitarian, Service, and Excellence awards. Our 2022 recipients were President and CEO of Meharry Medical College, Dr. James E. K. Hildreth, The Equity Alliance founders Senator Charlane Oliver and Tequila Johnson, and R.H. Boyd Chairman Emeritus and fourth-generation President/CEO, Dr. T. B. Boyd III (posthumously awarded), respectively.
