•The main emphasis in my house is on the Dining area. There are some rules in the house which one has to follow, and one of them is to have food together on the table everyday. •The positioning of the Dining table is apt for the house as it is right in the centre of the house.

THE URBAN HEAVEN AIM To study a residence made by an Indian Architect PROCESS •Research on Indian architects resedential projects made all across India •Analyse the space by looking at more houses made by the chosen architect. •Document the analysis LEARNING OUTCOME •Understanding the spaces •Analysis the space usage and frequency •Analysing the movement and circulation of furniture and other things •Making a presentation as compact as possible yet at the same time interesting and presentable.

ELEVATIONS:

PROJECT :THE URBAN HEAVEN ELEVATIONS: LOCATION :NEW DELHI ARCHITECT :MR. AMIT KHANNA and MR. KOTHARI BUILDER :MR. PAWAN KHOSLA AREA : 12000 sq. ft. The Urban Heaven is located on one of Delhi's busiest roads . The plan of the house is long and thin to look at and offers little by way of views and open spaces .

ZONING A clear demarcation of Public, Semi Public, Semi Private and Private zones has been done .Hence, a sense of togetherness and privacy both are maintained in the same house due to zoning .

There are two main axis’s running across the house which are linear in nature . They divide the house into 3 halves i.e. the constructed area , garden and driveway .

PROXIMITY

The servants quarter is located at the back of the house . The staff stays most of the time in the kitchen , hence a way out from the kitchen has also been given so as to not disturb the inmates of the house .

NATURAL LIGHTING

The sitting area, dining and kitchen are adjacent to each other ,creating easy access for food and other supplies .

All the rooms in the house are adjacent with bathrooms .Hence ,the proximity of the house is planned properly.

STRUCTURAL GRID

S E

WALL STRUCTURE The house is south facing and since the sun rises from the East ,there is minimal amount of Sunlight on the West facade. Skylights play an important role by providing natural light to the rooms on the West side of the house .

LOAD BEARING COLUMNS

LOAD BEARING WALLS

CLEARANCE IN OPERATIONAL FURNITURE AND CIRCULATION

The door in the small passage that connects the dining room and kitchen should have opened inside the kitchen allowing anthropometrically correct space to move in the passage. It is otherwise a well planned space . The circulation of the space is axial i.e. the circulation is followed by an axis. GROUND FLOOR

PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN

SYMMETRY •Symmetry is restful and relaxed. •There is no shifting planes and overlapping volumes that cause our eyes to jump around.

GROUND FLOOR

FIRST FLOOR

PROPORTION

1

•The house is proportionate in the ratio 1:2:3 . • The driveway and the garden balance out the constructed area of the house. 2

3

GROUND FLOOR

FIRST FLOOR

GROUND FLOOR

FIRST FLOOR

HARMONY •The plan of the house is well balanced on a linear axis . •As you can see on the ground floor and first floor plans ,there are equal number of rooms on both the sides. •Hence there is Harmony in the house in Terms of balance.

RESIDENCE DESIGN AIM • To make changes to the current space as per the requirements of the clients i.e. The family members. PROCESS •Write design brief on the existing house and problems one faces with their solution •Start with bubble diagrams leading to Zoning of the given area •Finalise the plan and make Auto cad drawing . •After making Cad drawing move on to 3D conceptualisation on Sketch up . LEARNING OUTCOME •Making the full house with textures and colours all by yourself . •Analysing the problems faced by the clients in their house •Rectifying the problems in an organised manner.

DESIGN BRIEF DRAWING ROOM The drawing room is used by formal guest for interaction and conversation . The Place is very organised and connected to the balcony. The bar area is also in the drawing room itself . Problem – The bar is present in the same room but is a little segregated from the main area. There is even an L-shaped sofa present in front of the bar ,hence ,it when one enters the room it looks like it is made up of 2 halves. Solution – The bar arrangement can be changed completely by putting it in the interactive area itself .Preferable the sofa could be shifted and made in to a mini bar area ,hence the area where the bar is can be made into an entirely new space.

DINING ROOM Dining area in my house is the main area in the house and is used everyday for eating meals. It is also used when the guests are over . It is next to the kitchen which makes the circulation and movement of the space area. Problem – Since the Dining area is used formally as well as informally , and is in the centre of the house ,it becomes difficult to coordinate within the formal spaces. Solution – The space where the bar will be moved out from and put in the interactive area , can be made into the dining area. The kitchen will also remain near and it will become as one common formal as well as informal unit with an area.

MASTER BEDROOM The Master bedroom is extremely spacious and is attached to an equally spacious bathroom. It is used by my parents. Problem- The bedroom is so big that easily one part of the area can be used as an informal sitting or study area. Right now the room looks huge and extremely empty. Solution – An informal seating can be made in the area.

SIBLING BEDROOM Problem- My siblings bedroom is also big attached to another room , his study room. Solution – If asked my brother , he would want the study area to be shifted into a lounging space.

KITCHEN The kitchen is a well designed area with lot of cabinets of storage .It is even spacious for movement and circulation of people or material needed in the kitchen Problem – There is no light or ventilation outlet in the kitchen , as it is next to the shaft . Due to that it becomes very hot in summers and smell doesn't go away soon . Solution- It needs to be located in a different which gets some good natural light and has good ventilation .

PUJA ROOM Problem – the space is very small and only 2 people can maximum fit in . Solution – The space needs to get extended or shifted .

CON’S •Guest room on the first floor in the middle of private area . •Powder room right next to the Entrance

ZONING

•After the bubble diagram exercise we were given a structural grid with columns and beams in which we were to convert the bubble diagrams into linear boxes. •This helped us in the finalisation of the process of the final plan . •We made several plans to come to a main conclusion .

MODEL MAKING

AIM Make a paper model of both Ground floor and First floor on the scale of 1:100 exploring all openings and elevations taking cues from the reference images selected for the design development.

PROCESS •Making a model out of paper and drawing elevations on it •Making extensions like balconies and bay windows to check for alignment in design.

LEARNING OUTCOME •Converting a 2D into 3D form gives one a better sense of space . •Understanding the alignment of spaces •Avoiding awkward protrusions in spaces which was not evident in 2D.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

PROS’S •A very big spacious Drawing room + Living . •No wastage of space. •Very nice double height with not too much wastage on the first floor. •Spacious puja room on the first floor. CON’s •Guest room not right next to the staircase , hence not an easy access. •Garden accessible only through rooms.

PRO’S •Good open passage entry for residents •Puja room placed correctly according to vaastu •Big rooms and bathrooms on the ground floor. CON’S •Staircase width very less fro any decoration or space movement. •Guest room not right next to the staircase , hence not an easy access.

FINAL PLAN

APPLICATION OF REM

GROUND FLOOR

FIRST FLOOR

•REM module helped me a lot in designing my space keeping my clients ,my family members in mind .. •My family believes a lot in vastu and therefore the idols in the puja room should be placed on the East facade . •Also the most elderly people in the house ,i.e. My grandparents ,room should be in the end which is why their room is in the end. •My family members also like to have 1 meal a day together on the table ,hence my dining is area is nice and spacious and close to the kitchen.
