Growing up in a diverse, multicultural setting in Hong Kong, I have always had an affinity for appreciating the dynamic nature of the built environment. My ideas are inspired by the juxtaposition of cultures, forms and spaces. Architecture is a multi-faceted discipline, a combination of both the abstract and the material that should create dialogue with its surroundings. I believe that there is a certain aesthetic beauty that can be achieved by synthesizing both the built and natural environments. However , the impact that architecture has on the total human experience is what fascinates me most. It is my goal as a designer to constantly reflect the needs and desires of the people in their physical / conceptual context in order to create a sense of ‘place’ that considers all sensory realms in the spatial experience. I am an ambitious, challenge-driven student with a great passion for architectural design, who thrives in a collaborative environment and aspires to learn something new everyday.

The Chronotorium is a facility that allows an individual to understand the perception of time as would the blind, by suspending the visual bias of the architecture. The attention to multi sensory detail in the haptic transition space, enhances the richness of the experience which in effect, elongates the passage of time. Using texture as a form of navigation, the visitors are encouraged to truly appreciate and discover small fragments of the natural site, and to find their own independent path to self reflection.

The outdoor pavilion serves as a viewing monument that highlights and responds to patterns of natural light and shadow to dictate circulation. Sharp angular forms of the building complement the surrounding mountain landscape , and creates a structural path that is raised from the common field of view.

TENSILITY
The sculptural space that is ‘Tensility’ serves both as a dance exhibition centre, and a canopied performance theatre that amplifies and reactivates the existing site. Through the constant movement of juxtaposing organic forms, the indoor-outdoor experience is a seamless transition.

A NANTAHALA RIVER HOUSE
|
NORTH CAROLINA
The river home’s location makes the resident naturally inclined to experience the outdoor through hiking, as a form of rejuvenation. This house will serve as a space that allows the work and trekking environment, to co-exist in a balanced manner. The architecture itself is sculpted into the landscape to interact with two strategically circuited trails that intersect and create an enclosure for the residential property.

The trails serve to renew and reactivate the site, offering two contrasting human experiences that encourage a unique movement and exploration of the natural topography- its gentle contours vs its intense incline. Nature and structure intersect as do work and outdoor activity. The river house, and its sloped green roof seeks to emphasize how the two hiking paths, and circulation of the house can enhance the reinvigorating experience that one feels when moving through nature - transforming the site into the precinct of the visitor’s experience.

Exploring my own sense of cultural duality through living amidst Chinese culture and how the preservation of such cultural symbols like the Temple Lion can become an iconic symbol. The monochromatic use of colour is utilized in order to create a sense of serenity and mirror how I felt upon reflecting over the journey.
