SENIOR CAPSTONE Hybrid Work Environment 40,000 Square Feet
Corporate and Hospitality Design Programs Used: AutoCAD, SketchUp, Revit, Lumion, and Lightroom Our overall mental health and well-being have become increasingly important in the result of COVID-19, with 40% of U.S. adults reporting to have struggled with increased anxiety & depression, substance use, and suicidal thoughts in 2020. After months working apart, employees say the main reason they want to come back to the office is to be with other people, socialize, and collaborate in ways that are just not possible remotely anymore. The intent of this project is to create an alternative to the traditional workplace using a real easte firm as an example that provides a hybrid solution on how companies can provide spaces for a wide variety of needs and users adaptable to change over time. I organized my research and final design into three categoires that I believe are the most important elements to address our mental health and well-being in working environments: culutre, wellness, and flexibility. This design will fill the missing intrinsic human experience of working together in spaces that foster creativity and innovation that organizations truly need for productivity and growth.
CONCEPT Network
Using the research gathered on what connection truly symbolizes in this project, network is all about how we can make the workplace an experience that people want to go into the office. This symbolism is translated into this design as a way to foster those human connections that support our mental health and well-being in a conducive environment. Using an arrangement of intersecting horizontal and vertical lines, these strong linear design elements are pulled throughout the floor plan and details as a way to visually show connection and movement throughout the space.

HUB AND SPOKE 2.0 Inspired by the “hub-and-spoke” model used in the aviation industry, the physical office acts as the central nervous system of brand and culture for a more widely distributed network of employees. Coming to central office in the future will mean a suspension from the work routine. It will be a space of gathering rather than open-plan desking and its functions will be geared towards an exceptional experience for staff and the public.
Located in Lawrenceville, one of the largest neighborhood areas in Pittsburgh, the chosen site for this project takes place in an old industrial warehouse building originally built by Ford Motor company in 1910 that was used as a manufacturing facility. This building is large enough to execute this example of a medium sized real estate company to utilize the hub and spoke model by making this site the central office location for Pittsburgh.
SITE LOCATION
The site has great access to a variety of local amenities with over 30 local restaurants, coffee shops, and bars within a 15 minute walk from site, as well as shopping and entertainment after office hours. There is abundant parking on the street or lot behind the building with two bus stops adjacent to building, and rentable bikes across street.

Event Space The first element to this design is culture. Culture is about who you are, and it’s what you stand for and value as a community of people pursuing a shared mission, especially at a company. You can think of it as an operating system—the behind-the-scenes code driving the behaviors of how employees work together and treat each other. Not only do we need to implement this type of culture in the workplace, we also need to integrate the community around us. Instead of a ground floor that’s only accessed by tenants, we can reinvent these sidewalk-facing storefronts to be multi-use destinations that serve the community, not just single-use spaces that cater solely to the daytime workforce. The Event Space is a primary gathering space for clients and visitors of the building for meetings and events during the day and evening. This real estate firm can utilize the space for tours and presentations of commercial spaces, while local outside associations can rent out this space for special events as well. While not in use, the LED screens display images of nature to promote biophillic design within the interior space. The Work Cafe serves both the company and community with a variety of social seating for eating and informal conversations. The space will works hand in hand with the Grab n Go Station providing pre-made health and nutritious food selections by the Ghost Kitchen staff.

The second element is flexibility, the hallmark of future successful organizations. We’re going to see a series of spaces in the office to support these physical and virtual worlds to retain the part of the office that brings us together for a purposeful experience. There will be an increased need for more adaptable, reconfigurable spaces that support physical and virtual collaboration. Only 19% of U.S. workers want to work from home full time; over half would prefer a hybrid of 1-2 days or 3-4 days of working from home. For years, data has shown that employees who have the flexibility to work in multiple locations are happiest and more satisfied with their jobs. The future workplace can leverage those benefits to help employees optimize their own performance. The Breakout Area becomes the flexibile meeting space for employees to collaborate, present, and discuss new ideas with colleagues and clients physically and virtually during the day and evening. A variety of seating arrangements and custom design panel dividers serve as a temporary oasis for employees equipped with the most innovative technology for a collaborative focused office. These spaces will foster collaboration and innovation between colleagues through huddle sessions, breakout ideation, pin ups and critiques; all essential aspects needed for a productive team to thrive in a physical space.

The lessons learned from the experience of working from home during COVID offer an opportunity to rethink the last element, wellness, in the physical work environment. In some ways, the world of building design changed more in 2020 than it did the past decade. New practices will impact anyone who wants to ensure their organization is alive and healthy in the future. Every single customer, employee, tenant, client, now thinks about the way spaces impact our work and life. From here, we can expect a new level of focus on personal health through wellness. Biophillic concepts were incorporated from The WELL Building Standard®, a performance-based system for measuring, certifying, and monitoring building features that impact human health and well-being. A Tea Bar serves as a part-time working, relaxing, and gathering space for employees to escape to with connection to nature and veiws of the city any time of the day and season. Tea bars are similar to coffee shops, but make tea the spotlight of their menus. Some tea bars transition from day to night with tea-centric cocktails that bring a new wave of flavors for bartenders to experiment with. Many types of tea can contribute to your wellness, including varieties with digestive benefits, stress-relieving properties, or energy boosts. It was a necessity to have accessible power in these spaces so that it gave employees the freedom to work outdoors.

J.K. Place Boutique Hotel Corporate Office 15,000 Square Feet
Corporate Design Programs Used: AutoCAD, SketchUp, and Lumion Awards: 1st Place in Commercial Design (Positive Space 2021) J.K. Place is an Italian boutique hotel chain with four locations in Florence, Capri, Rome, and Paris and was founded by Ori Kafri in 2003. The name is an homage to his father (Jonathan Kafri, aka “JK”). The brand sets itself apart from other hotels by focusing on its philosophy; service, attention to detail comfort and atmosphere, ensuring that guests feel totally at home in the luxurious surroundings, whether staying for business or pleasure. His philosophy as a hotelier, ‘we did not try to be different, we simply tried to be ourselves.’ When you travel, it is important that wherever you go, you experience something different. The owner is looking forward to opening more hotels in Europe and the U.S., having their office headquarters in Rome, the capital of Italy, is a well centered location for this Italian hotel chain to work on establishing their brand in other countries.
CONCEPT Living Moments
Life is a series of experiences. This design is challenged to create a workspace capable of activating the sense of belonging and personality. Decoding the iconic moments in which people get in touch with the J.K. Hotel brands enabled me to identify meaning for consumers. The new office headquarters is divided into three fundamentals of life that is inspired by the owner’s personal philosophy: 1. Family - is the basis of dedicating moments of conviviality and relaxation that pays homage to Italian luxury and sophistication. 2. Coherence – is the personal areas and lifestyle of the workplace where employees enrich in focus and productivity. 3. Transmission - is about collaborating new ideas and rediscovering the origins that brought the brand to where it is today. Eclectic mixes of architectural detailing, modern and contemporary furniture and artwork, and unique decor pieces that outline the brand’s identity create an intriguing and sophisticated working environment. The resulting design is a place that, as a whole, narrates the identity of J.K. Place and is a showcase of its continuing success into the future.
Family is the heart of dedicating
moments of conviviality and relaxation. Spaces included in this group are reception, eating areas, and lounge spaces that foster people spending time with each other. Enriching red hues and yellow mixed with a classic navy create a warm and welcoming environment full of eclectic personality and pay homage to Italian luxury and sophistication.
Coherence is the personal areas and lifestyle of
the workplace where employees enrich in focus and productivity. Private offices, open workstations, and concentration rooms are important for this area. Yellow hues are pulled from the main color palette and mixed with the secondary color green that creates a warm sophisticated working environment with the feeling and comfort of home.
Transmission is about collaborating new
ideas and rediscovering the origins that brought the brand to where it is today. Areas included are conference rooms, presentation rooms, and other collaboration spaces to promote more human interaction throughout the office. These spaces incorporate the rich navy hue from the main color palette and mix with a muted pink and vibrant purple, stimulating creativity and inspiration.

Reception Lounge Inspired by the classic reception layouts in every J.K. Place hotel, the office reception area becomes a welcoming social space for guests and employees. A sky lit atrium, double arch walkways, twin high back chairs mixed with neutral modern furniture, contemporary artwork setting the scene, and classical statues create an environment full of eclectic interest and personality. Unique flea market pieces that the founder, Ori Kafri, always adds into his hotels can be seen throughout this space from elegant lamps on an
antique wooden consol table to aging scultpure pieces lining a bookshelf. Classic black and white diamond tile seen in many Italian entrances fosters a sense of movement throughout the space and contrasts against the light Italian woodwork. The lunchroom takes on an opulent form of dining within an office space to showcase the importance of family and friends sharing a meal together, one of the strongest values in Italian culture, representing those living moments of conviviality spent at the table with coworkers.

shelving and accent walls to give feeling for those moments of energy and productivity, as well as warmth from an Italian home. Each private office has its own seating nook, pulling eclectic decorative pieces to give each space its own character. J.K. hotels always feature pictures of architectural interiors from classical places in Italy, I was able to put my own twist on this and incorporate my own pictures while studying abroad in Rome.

Accent Wall
Moveable velvet textured curtains surround the conference area giving it the flexibility to be a closed, private meeting space and an open collaborative room for employees when not used for meetings. The modern coffered acoustical panels are repeated in this space, giving the grey neutral space a pop of purple, promoting creativity. The presentation room commemorates the origins of the brand and its Italian location by putting these elements on display in the form of photography and eclectic decorative pieces featured on an arch design bookshelf, a reminder of what made the J.K. Place become what it is today. An accent wall creates an area dedicated for pre-meetings, reflective thinking and relaxation, or just a place to have a conversation with someone. In regard to this abstract way of thinking when it comes to creativity and transmission, a textured wall becomes the focal point for sparking conceptual ideas and thoughts. This image was taken as I was walking along a rusticated street in Rome. The plaster relief texture and variating colors that come from this image was something that I wanted to include in this design to demonstrate those moments that we can communicate these abstract images to promote something inspiring.

PERCEPTION Immersive Photography Experience 7,500 Square Feet
Hospitality Design Programs Used: AutoCAD, SketchUp, and Lumion Looking at things from a different point of view sometimes comes through the most when not described at all, just experienced. The primary objective of this project is to introduce the concept of physical experience design through the development of a designed space for an immersive installation environment in Pittsburgh. The objectives of this project include the following: create a space solution that immediately translates to a memorable place, facilitation of the experience to a brand, integration of retail space to strengthen brand, communication of brand essence therefore creating a unique sense of place, creation of an immersive and memorable experience for guest as well as employees, facilitate the creation experience through the design of the interior environment in order to establish lasting relationships with new and existing guests, and provide integrated installations throughout the space.
CONCEPT Complex Perspective
Using the bridge, a symbol that makes Pittsburgh known as the “city of bridges”, this experience allows your creativity to come alive by immersing yourself in different perspectives of complexity that can have a powerful impact by just how you perceive it through a lens. Bridges became the inspired form used in this experience because it can be made out of complex items that come together as one simple function, to get us from point A to Point B. These structures look simple from far away, but you soon realize the complex systems that make up these large forms are filled with scale and detail that we don’t get to see up close. This experience becomes the unique place to be able to learn photography while capturing something you don’t get to experience on a daily basis.

The experience begins with a homogeneous level of concrete forms that represents the materiality of foundation supporting a bridge. A wall of metal and suspension cables becomes the focal point for this entry space, giving clues on the structures that are seen on a bridge and how they change from the different angles you look at the wall. At the reception desk, an associate is there to greet you and tell you about the different packages provided to guide you through the experience. You have the first choice of using a professional camera for a rental price if you do have one, or using your phone’s camera at no extra cost. The second part is the option of going through the workshop portion before the immersive experience. The associate informs you the importance of taking the workshop before the experience as a beginner. You agree with the associate and decide to rent a camera and sign up for the next available workshop before the experience.
Exhibit 2 After completing the workshop, you make your way up the stairs to the experience, seeing repeating members of steel with connecting rivets lining their direction of repeating forms. This floor represents the structures underneath a bridge that we don’t get to see every day when crossing over one. Images of bridges in Pittsburgh are displayed on the walls as inspiration for each space. Throughout the rooms, are hidden controls within the rivets to add lighting within the
Exhibit 1 forms of the space and create more dynamic shots. You are pleased with how much variation you have gotten out of this one area by exploring these interactions. You use the next flight of stairs to the second level of the experience where a large-scaled suspension bridge structure encapsulates the exterior of the roof filled with glass panels in between the open voids into the sky. This floor represents the structures above a bridge that we do see passing over the bridge.

Retail Space
At the end of the experience, participants can connect their phones or SD cards in the cameras to edit them in a social, retail environment. A concrete form embedded with touchscreens are programmed with artificial intelligence software that can automatically take out any unwanted people in your images. Examples of pictures taken and edited by others scatter on LED display screens on the wall and ceiling of the space. Creating an experience behind these images that can be printed on customizable items creates a more impactful story than what you may purchase at a clothing store with a graphic on it. Not only are you walking out with images that you will have forever, but also a learning experience you can take with you in your journey with photography.

Interior Design Portfolio
As part of a web design class, I was able to transform this project into an interactive website that made this concept come to life in a real life application. Refining the brand and telling the story behind each part of the experience really put into perpsective on how this design can become a true photography experience from start to finish.

SEASIDE SERENITY Pediatric Care Center 2,100 Square Feet
Healthcare Design Programs Used: AutoCAD, SketchUp, Lumion, and Photoshop Awards: 2nd Place in Healthcare Design (Positive Space 2019) A pediatric office with the purpose of having a waiting area designed for the entertainment of children. Designing for young patients means inspiring confidence, encouraging playfulness and offering hope. To accomplish this, hospitals and practices need high-performing and flexible environments that can do it all: enable excellent medical care, encourage interaction and patient engagement, and instill a sense of comfort for all ages. Distraction provides children with a positive alternative focus, which helps to minimize patients’ perceptions of distress during their visit to the pediatrician. Offering choices for coping and distraction can contribute to a sense of control and mastery in an unfamiliar environment.
CONCEPT Oceanic Impressions
Inspired by the calming and healing properties of the beach with visual textures from the ocean, sand, and sky, this pediatric office is designed to create a relaxing and tranquil environment for the patient. The representation of these textures is abstracted through materiality and natural forms, engaging the child on a sensory experience that helps them not feel as anxious about going to the pediatrician’s office.

Leading lines become the focal point from the moment someone enters the space, with the linear acoustical panels on the ceiling to the curving lines on the floor and walls. Bright pops of color create visual distractions for one to explore the environment. The materials were carefully chosen to comply with the safety requirements of a healthcare space without losing the essence of the design and maintaining concept. All seating upholstery is bleach cleanable, stain repellent, antimicrobial, hypoallergenic, and has over 100,000 double rubs. The organic movement created by the flooring in the pediatric office are commercial slip retardant.

Play Area
Moments that happen throughout the space were explored to create an engaging experience full of positive encounters. The forms in the play area take on an abstracted version of a wave and is surrounded by a custom art installation of colorful flying seagulls. These seagulls carry out throughout the rest of the areas that a child will encounter during their visit. A physician scale disguises itself to the shape of a lighthouse, while the typical exam table is transformed into a bright and cheerful platform still equipped for storage necessities. Small distractions like these provide children with a positive alternative focus during a visit to the pediatrician.

GROUNDED Oncology Hospital Room 500 Square Feet
Healthcare Design Programs Used: AutoCAD, SketchUp, and Lumion Awards: Best in Show (Positive Space 2021), 1st Place in Micro Design (Positive Space 2021) Grounding, also known as Earthing, is simply connecting your body directly to the subtle, natural electrical energy that exists on the surface of the earth. During grounding, negative ions from the earth’s surface rush into our bodies to discharge the many unpaired positive ions and balance the electron-magnetic field that we accumulate in our daily lives. You can do this by walking barefoot outside or by using “barefoot substitutes” indoors that are made with a conductive material and utilize the ground port of electrical outlets. Grounding health benefits include: reducing inflammation and chronic pain by defusing excess positive electrons, improving sleep, increasing Energy level, reducing the incidence of cancer, lowering stress, and promoting calmness by reducing cortisol, reducing the body’s electronic field and extra electronmagnetic field, improving blood pressure and blood flow, and relieving muscle tension and headache.

The emphasis of the design is focused on connection and balance to resemble the direct contact with the earth and the neutral state our bodies become as a result. A streamline objective using a mix of warm and cool neutral tones with the look of natural wood and pops of green create a nature inspired atmosphere inside a hospital room that promotes healing aspects physically and mentally for a cancer patient.

Earthing® pads and sheets specially designed for human grounding are integrated throughout the seating and hospital bed for the patient. As a result, the patient has the ability to gain the benefits of having direct contact with the earth even in a hospital room, which is important in the healing process for cancer patients. In the potential of long periods of stay, the aesthetics of the room helps the cancer patient feel as if they are not in a hospital and enables them to have a quicker recovery. As you walk in the space, the diagonal shape of the room pulls you in and connects you into the space from a horizontal perspective, while the ceiling detail symbolizes the strength a cancer patient can receive from grounding using the walls to show the vertical connection between the ceiling and floor that represent direct contact that happens with grounding.

CC SQUARE College Central Square Renovation 10,000 Square Feet
Education Design Programs Used: AutoCAD, SketchUp, and Lumion Group Collaborator: Robin Stih Renovation of a common space within La Roche Univeristy in Pittsburgh, PA. The center is utilized as a primary student hangout area and lunchroom for the Redhawk cafe and cafeteria. More development on the space planning for people to socialize and work was needed with a more sufficient flow of traffic pathways for one of the most heavily populated special spaces on campus. Having the opportunity to redeisgn a space as a student there made the project a real learning experience by already having an understanding of how the space functions and what changes could be made to make it more functional.
CONCEPT Spirit of 63’
In a nod to the history and spirit of La Roche which was founded in 1963, the Spirit of 63’ concept creates not just a space, but an environment of flexible and functional spaces that accommodates La Roche’s global student community present and future. The soul of the space lies in 1963 with a base of mid-century modern and architectural accents that reflect La Roche University’s traditions. Warm and cool colors mix with living plants to reflect the environment of growth and change that is the La Roche community.
The materials were carefully chosen to comply with the durability requirements of an education space without losing the essence of mid-century design and maintaining the concept. All seating upholstery is bleach cleanable, stain repellent, and has over 100,000 double rubs. A brass pendant light that I designed and welded for another class is also featured in this midcentury modern design.

Lounge Area The shape and traffic pattern of the floor plan was inspired from the university’s old logo of a fleur-de-lis. The shape was used as a way to create circulation between multplie entrances and divide the meeting spaces on the first level. The top diamond of the logo complimented the shape of the two-level out door patio. The first level features two gathering spaces for clubs and organzations to have a designated meeting area. A work study coffee bar serves nutritious food and beverage options throughout the day while giving an opportunity for students to have a paying job during the semester. Adding a surrounding outdoor patio creates a striking entrance and fills the missing connection to nature the campus was lacking.

Study Area The second level features the gaming lounge and study area. The space before lacked quality acoustic systems with its tall ceilings. Creating a second levle and proving acoustical ceiling solutions was key to making these spaces more feasbile for large gatherings. The gaming lounge features a foosball table, pool table, and multpile monitors
that students enjoyed in the previous space. The study area provides different seating arrangements with acoustic wall and ceiling panels to give commuter students a more private place to work in between classes. An atrium commemorating part of the shape from the old logo helps fuse the two floors together, reflecting La Roche University’s past and present.

THE CARLYLE Luxury Condominium 2,500 Square Feet
Residential Design Programs Used: AutoCAD, SketchUp, and Lumion Awards: Best in Show (Positive Space 2019), 1st Place in Residential Design (Positive Space 2019) Implementation of design process and space planning technique of residential space for clients with a different cultural perspective and design aesthetic, while designing for ADA compliance in the overall space. A young couple named Brahim and Hadiya have recently immigrated to the United States from their native country, Morocco. They are planning to move into a condominium called The Carlyle that is located on the corner of Fourth and Wood Street in downtown Pittsburgh, PA. They have a four year old daughter named Aleah and Brahim’s parents visit for long periods of time from Morocco to help take care of Aleah. Brahim’s father is disabled and needs the apartment to be wheelchair friendly.
CONCEPT Moroccan Oasis
Since their daughter, Aleah, will be growing up in America, the design of the home reflects traditional aspects of Moroccan architecture, along with some sophisticated modern elements of America. To incorporate both Moroccan and American culture through design and space layout, the open living space fuses both cultures together through different spaces for gathering, eating, and entertainment. All spaces are accessible to all members of the family and colored patterns are used as accents to add aesthetics to the overall design.

The material palette combines a variety of colors and patterns to bring Moroccan character to the space. Deep jewel tones like reds, emeralds, royal blues and purples are vibrant reminders of the colorful flea markets of ancient Marrakech. Furniture is ornately accented by wood and upholstered with plush textured fabrics. Walls with colorful mosaic patterns are illuminated with intricately detailed metal lamps. Vibrantly colored rugs, ottomans, poufs and cushions add exotic but laid back opulence. The relaxed feeling is augmented by the abundance of leafy green plants. The entrance incorporates the traditional Moroccan fountain as a water feature on the entry wall with elaborate patterns inspired by the Moroccan octagonal star.
Living Room To include some American aspects in the design, a modern living room with a touch of vibrant, Moroccan colors functions as a space for family entertainment and welcoming. The kitchen revolves around a central island with bar seating. A horseshoe arch that serves as a decorative vent hood is accompanied with open shelving
that holds traditional serving bowls called tajine. Light portraying from Morrocan lanterns creates an illuminated pattern on the surface of the countertop used for serving food. An abundance of lower cabinets allow easy access storage for everyone and a lowered sink on the island provides wheelchair accessibility.

Traditional Moroccan meals consist of a gathering space where couches are set low to the ground and invite people to gather around a low central table to share a meal together. Adjacent to the kitchen, the space blends a Moroccan Moorish arch, rich patterns, and metal finishes to create a connected atmosphere. A cooler tone is used for the sleeping space and is accented with ornamental fretwork on the wall and natural colored textiles. In the accompanying bathroom, fresh colors from patterned tiles reflect from Moroccan inspired mirrors to form a relaxing environment. A wheelchair accessible shower, vanity, and toilet provide both an aesthetically pleasing and functional space.

Photography Explorations Digital Photography I La Roche Univeristy Pittsburgh, PA
Equiptment Used: Canon EOS 6D Mark II Programs Used: Photoshop and Lightroom Awards: Wildlife, 1st Place in Photography (Positive Space 2021) Throughout my undergraduate career, I always had a passion for photography in design. My rendering and photography skills work hand and hand when developing realistic visualizations for the viewer. When starting a new interior design project, it has always been my path to explore and find the next inspirational idea that I can incorporate, whether it is through a wall-covering texture, a simple art piece, or visual imagery for my next concept. I wanted to refine my skills before graduation so I took an introduction class on basic concepts, processes, and techniques of photography which include camera usage, exposure, composition, lighting and the application of these techniques. Not only have I seen an imporvemnt in my artisitc style, but also in my persective on capturing an image through the lens.

Photography Explorations Study Abroad Trip Rome, Italy
Equiptment Used: Canon EOS 6D Mark II Programs Used: Photoshop and Lightroom Awards: Florence, 3rd Place in Photography (Positive Space 2021) Sometimes you don’t know how valuable time can be. Going to Italy was always dream of mine, and to have the opportunity to study abroad there for 12 weeks for the Spring 2020 semester was something I never thought I would ever experience. Every time I captured a cobblestone street or Corinthian column, it was a snapshot of a memory I thought I would be looking at when I got back to Pittsburgh in the end of April 2020. After having to cancel the rest of the semester there in February due to the initial outbreak of COVID-19 in Italy, I never pictured to reminisce those moments even sooner and stronger than I could have ever known. It took a long time before I could look at these pictures again. Despite this, it has made me realize why photography has had such an importance in my life. Capture every moment like it is your last, because you never know what will happen tomorrow. As a reminder during these hard times, I keep these pictures now on my desk to remind me of what those memories felt like. Italy found a place in my heart and I hope that some of these images capture that as well for you.
