Editor’s Notes

Summer vacation is finally over. Stop the frowning and whining. Let us face the academic year with glee and excitement. It is time to face your books, tread the wide corridors, and confine in your designated classrooms. Welcome to college life! It is normal to experience culture shock and even hangover from high school – probably missing the atmosphere and the people in your alma mater – but worry no more. The Pioneer, the official student publication of Angeles University Foundation, introduces a special issue made specifically for the newbies in the university. We will take you to the different diners that will satisfy your cravings (turn to page 8). Also, we will introduce the captains of our sail this academic year (page 11). All these and more are presented to you to spice up your college life. Enjoy and may you have a remarkable experience ahead!

Sincerely,

As a Nobel prize recipient in literature, George Bernard Shaw, once said, “Progress is impossible without change and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.” This year, hoping to bring that progressive change is a new breed of leaders ready to set sail on the challenge of leadership this academic year 2014-2015. The New Revolution Y

es, a change is about to come!

The Pioneer ‘13-‘14 have had its torch enlivened throughout the academic year, fulfilled its hopes for the student body, and ignited difference towards the publication. Its Editorial board paved way towards innovation and had successfully published six issues during their term. And as the curtains are about to close for these esteemed breed of writers, we look forward on following their magnificent act.

But their battle has just been fought. They have succeeded. Another battle awaits for us. What is much important, now that we are about to be placed into their positions, is to reflect in ourselves on what we can and shall do to nourish the famished thoughts of the Angelenean community as we sail with a new aspiration, a new perspective, a new beginning.

It is indeed a new revolution for us, a start of something new, to capture another goal, another mission that will solidify the thrust of the University publication of not only informing Angeleneans but also inspiring change towards a hoped progression. These people truly became like authoritative parents to us. They reminded us the not-so-basic basics of journalism. They made us see the essence of time and communication. They have taught us to be dauntless on expressing truth, no matter how many howls and barks they throw at us. They also turned out to be our brutally honest critics and at the same time our guiding mentors.

The new editorial board, however, does not envision on surpassing the standards that the previous board had set. They have built their path towards the heights of success. What we ought to consider doing now is to create our own legacy, not measured by superficial standards of excellence but the heart to bridge gaps, unite in diversity, and write in order to serve. The quest begins now.

ust as powerful our government is, a single vote of a Filipino could either set the country to its right track or take it to the crooked banister where only the abusive people can go up the stairs of progress.

And yes, we are partly to be blamed why our leaders are, most of the time, mediocre. The next election, 2016, isn’t even near yet, but it’s not an excuse for us not to worry for the people of this land’s future. Reflect on how our administration is doing right now. Is progress there? Yes. But is there progress? No. Confusing as it may seem, the Philippines has undeniably improve in many aspects, but we’re still the same old country that could be bullied anytime. Our foundation isn’t firm. As stated by a well-known Senator of the Philippines, the problem here is that those who stole millions and billions of the country’s money are at the hospitals while those who stole something relatively few are locked in prison.

Our country exhibits a crooked and twisted justice system that the Filipino citizens do not deserve. Fault of the government?

There will always be hidden agendas in every action, and it is up to us whether to be fooled by them or create a path for the righteous. Apparently, yes. Authorities take advantage of the loopholes of our constitution resulting to the concealment of the truth. Have you noticed that every

accused politician gets sick while the litigation is ongoing? Nobody wants a pet to feed that bites you afterwards. As students, practicing the right to vote is highly encouraged. Preparing for the real world, we must learn how to choose the persons worthy of our vote. If only the line “Kayo ang boss ko!” were true, then the government are visibly working and serving the people of their land, but no they don’t. There will always be hidden agendas in every action, and it is up to us whether to be fooled by them or create a path for the righteous. Keep in mind that your single vote could induce the good change that we always wanted.

guilty pleasures Why I doubt to write a column? BY JOHN EDWARD MAMANGUN

I

gnorance is never bliss. popularity or price is not what we came for and a student publication should not be crumpled, dumped in the trash, or ripped into pieces once you got through it.

To me, journalism is more than an art or a medium of expression; it is my lifeline. No, I don’t want to be poetic or sentimental but yes, it has become a part of what I want and need to do. That is why it is a bit aggravating when a dear friend asks you, “Ano ang napapala mo sa pagiging campus journalist?” and then you find yourself awestruck with no breath of words. That was easily my struggle: friends who are cognizant of the fact that you are a writer but neither one of them reads your articles. I get it. It is hard to be appreciated when you know that out of the circle, you are the only who enjoys what you are doing. However, they are not the only ones I would like to address, but all who think that we (campus journalists) are just wasting our times. For once,

for once, popularity or price is not what we came for. The mere fact that only a few recognize your labor makes the pounding of your keyboard burdensome rather than rewarding. Call me an attention deficient or whatever but I don’t think the campus journalists’ efforts are properly distinguished.

The thought of just putting everything to waste might have been the sole reason why I always doubt to write a column, or any article for the paper. Then again, I am still a writer, maybe unsung, but have been granted a wondrous opportunity spreading the colors of information to the whole studentry, appealing a motion for change, and aiming for a pivotal progression. As I pen this last paragraph, what I wish is not for you to take a glimpse of what I have written, but for you to acknowledge that there are still people who enliven on the purpose of writing. This is not a call forcing you to read. The world is full of choices. It is up to you to pick the right one.

emember the times when we would surprisingly fulfill our wildest dreams of becoming immortal?

The times when we would survive for days without any sleep and still have the stamina to go to our classes? It is truly rewarding that we are able to make it in the typical struggles of college life. But we don’t really need to gain all those eye bags or sacrifice our leisure time to accomplish our school works. “Yihhh... Bahala na. Bukas ko na tatapusin ‘to”, familiar with that line? If no, run to the nearest confessional box and plead for forgiveness. You see, there are two kinds of people living in this world: those who have procrastinated, and those who, ahem, LIE about it. There’s this common attribution that Filipinos would apply in countless times.

It is when they would set aside their priorities for something unimportant, or worse, something worthless.

Tamad among the Filipino students today. Sometimes, the root cause of all our stress is the choice to delay things and the thought that we have all the time in the world. This opposes the saying: “Daig ng maagap ang masipag”. Time is gold, seriously. In fact, it’s so valuable that it doesn’t even care about you. It will never wait for you. It will just keep on running and running until it leaves you behind, and closes all the doors from where the chances I must admit that sometimes, I can’t and opportunities go out. Our mission resist choosing pleasure over obligation, now is to beat time, and make it and this is what’s igniting the spirit of Juan surrender itself to us.

sometimes, the root cause of all our stress is the choice to delay things and the thought that we have all the time in the world.

College Life? CHALLENGE ACCEPTED BY GEM ALLEN SAN PEDRO

Y

ou have probably wondered how college will be like. Will it just be how high school was like? Will it be like entering a firing hell? Will it be like a putting a cherry on top of a banana split? Well, fear not, because here's a peek inside the campus life that might help you figure things out.

GETTING OVER HIGH SCHOOL HANGOVER `

The first few days of college might be a marathon of flashbacks; you'd miss your parents, high school friends and even your house pet. The combination of sudden need of maturity, culture shock and nostalgia ought to have you wanting to be sent back to your previous alma mater. You’ll meet new friends, encounter different professors and eat at unique places, but sooner or later; they’ll help you get over your high school hangover. If that isn’t the solution, visiting the guidance counselor’s office might be a good idea.

HAVING A NEW CLIQUE It may seem hard to let go of high school friends and mingle with new faces, but it is not really as bad as it sounds. The people you encounter in your college life is a complete mixture of different personas and dispositions, there would be people you'll want to hide from, smash a chair to, eat lunch with and seat beside with during exams. But in choosing friends, always choose the BI - the better influence. Kenn Pine of AB Communication imparted, "I found my circle of friends when we were rehearsing for the Culturals. All of us were fond of dancing and share the same sense of humor. Right now, I think my friends bring out the best in me when I'm with them."

DEALINGWITHDIFFERENTTIME STRUCTURE

Unlike high school, class schedules are more flexible in college. Before, you might be taking up Math at 7:008:00am every day, Physical Education during fridays and be dismissed at 4pm. In college, your English class could take place at 9am on Mondays and Wednesdays, your first class during Thursdays may start at 1pm or so. If your classes starts at afternoon, waking up wouldn’t be a problem for you. Carlota Villanueva of BS Pharmacy voiced, "At first it was hard for me to balance my time because I was not used to that kind of schedule. But because of my enthusiasm and willingness to learn, I survived." In college, you’d be offered time frames that will be at most of your comfort.

College is a trove of discoveries, struggles and growth. As cliché as it sounds, do not be afraid to take risks and see how it serves its purpose well, as the saying goes, “Nothing Ventured, nothing gained.”

Craving for not-so-greasy dishes yet wanting to save up some cash? Search no more for we’ve discovered easy to find places near the university that will surely satisfy your hunger for affordable dishes

Doodle Bites

picture ng doodle bites

First restaurant on our list is easy to find since it’s located in front of the Main Building. Aside from being fully air-conditioned, the eatery has a unique characteristic that sets it aside from the others. Here, customers are allowed to write on the whiteboards placed on the walls and pin notes or works of art on the corkboard. We asked one Occupation Therapy student, Jonathan Powell, of his thoughts about Doodle Bites, “To be honest, the food is really good, even though it does take a while for it to be served. I guess the price is pretty good too, very affordable,” He answered. If that wasn’t enough to convince you to come and visit, the second room has a television where you could watch for free. Next time you feel the urge to munch on something for lunch, drop by with some colorful pens and let your artistic side shine while you feast.

D’Diner

A cozy little place located near the side gate. They offer rice meals that include free drinks and soup. Costing as low as 30 pesos, you’ll be amazed to find how satisfying the food is. When asked about the diner, Management Accounting student Mark Pangilinan says, “I think the diner is great, especially for hungry students who try to save money, because of how affordable the food is. The place is perfect because it’s so easily accessible. You don’t have to worry about being late for class. I also love the fact that they offer free Wi-Fi.” Besides being an affordable and comfortable place to eat, its also Wi-Fi hotspot, what else can we say? If you’re looking for a quick and satisfying lunch, or maybe just a comfortable cheap one, this is the place to go.

Ihawan

picture ng Ihawan

If you want to eat dinner and you have no affordable place to think of, then the “Ihawan” is the perfect place for you. It is easily found in front of 7-11 near the main building after 5 pm. Unlike the other eateries, Ihawan is purely buy-and-go, great for those who are always on the run. Yanyan Mendiola, a Psychology student, shares her thoughts about the place, “The price is just right. In fact, even though it’s cheap, the food is filling. The atmosphere is alright. It’s cool and comfortable. It’s complete with utensils and condiments that you could use as much as you’d like. If you want to use a lot of catsup, go ahead, it’s alright. I’d give it a 9/10.” Whether you are dropping by to add a little diversity to your quick dinners, or you just simply want to try it out, you will be left satisfied with the classic goodness only a grilled dinner can offer.

Melo’s

Melo’s is a family owned diner found near Mercury Drug. If you appreciate comfort and service with a smile, this place is for you. From their Cheesy Pizza meal to their unique chicken meals, you will be wishing you had more space in your stomach to have another bite. Rwendell Catacutan, an electrical engineering student, comments about the diner, “I love how the flavors explode in my mouth with every bite. The way they prepare the dishes, coupled with the fact that it’s affordable and comfortable, just leaves me coming back for more.” Indeed, if you’re looking for something new and exciting for your taste buds, this place offers the most unique flavors which will quickly get you hooked.

Keep in mind that when it comes to the many eateries around the campus, three words are to be remembered—Affordable, comfortable, and satisfying. Who could ever ask for more? Buckle up and prepare your taste buds for a rollercoaster ride of flavor.

Angeleneans’ Wish List by Nika Jaz Herrera

Who said Christmas season is the only time you can make a wish list? Here is a list of wishes that Angeleneans want to have this coming academic year, check them out!

LOCKERS PLEASE!

One of students’ mourning is the regulation of not being allowed to enter classes in P.E uniform. Sadly, it is also a little strenuous carrying a paper bag when you already have a pile of books in your arms and a bag pack. Hotel and Restaurant Management student Wendell Paras, shares his no-locker story. “As a graduating HRM student, we bring lots of stuff and uniform. And I think lockers will ease the burden of students who bring lots of stuff. It’s not only hassle free, it’s also more convenient.” Many certainly wish to have lockers of their own, not only in the Sports and Cultural Center (SCC) but also in the Professional Schools (PS) Building and Main Campus.

AN ELEVATOR WOULD BE COOL! Yes, stairs is a great exercise , but they let our legs grow muscles , don’t they? In no doubt, you’ve seen an Angelenean sweating like a faucet going up on the 5th floor of the PS Building and screaming “Elevator please!” Unfortunately, it is one of the tearless grieves of being at the PS Building. To have an elevator will also benefit, specifically, the aged professors going up and down the stairs. Although the construction of an elevator is not a joke, yet somehow, students never lose hope of the potential of having it in the future.

HOW ABOUT A FROZY TRAVEL?

One of the things that make educational field trips unforgettable is the fun and enjoyment students get. Angeleneans yearn for more air conditioned buses. On the words of Archie Allad, a Management and Entrepreneurship student, “I wish we would always use those air conditioned buses whenever we have our field trip. Simply because we pay our tuition regularly and for us to experience that the school is indeed private. For four years of being a student, I rarely ride those AUF air conditioned buses which should actually be more often.”

VENDO MACHINES EVERYWHERE Many Angeleneans’ request is having Vendo machine in every floor of the PS Building, so students who are in higher floors won’t bother to go down anymore in the 2nd floor. Geneva Baluyut of Tourism Management said, “I think its fine. It is better to have it every floor so you won’t have to line up because sometimes there are a lot of students who are also getting their drinks in the Vendo machine.”

WE LOVE GOOD READS! Bookworms are going gaga over books such as The Fault in Our Stars by John Green and the Shatter Me series of Tahereh Mafi. Angeleneans are in pleasurable demand that the library would hopefully have these novels someday aside from having academic books. As said by Trina Cayanan,vv 2nd year Medical Technology student, “I always love novel books, it’s like they drift me to another world. I am already entertained with few books so what more if they’ll have it in the library? Then I guess I’d be staying there more often. ” And reading has never been this interesting!

Clearly, Christmas season isn’t the only the time for wish lists, but for a new academic year too! So if you have wishes for this academic year, start scribbling them now. You’ll never know, some of them may come true!

Big, bold, and vivacious . . . meet the new head of the pack. Matthew feels ignited and excited at the same time when asked about how he feels when the Angeleneans had chosen him as the University Student Council President. He also shares that he was grateful for those who believed in him and also to his newly formed team. Would you believe that he considers leadership as his way of living? Matthew acknowledged the fact that he invested all of his efforts outside the school for the past two years. Now, there’s a slight difference; this time it will be all AUF. Brace yourselves Angeleneans for this year would be like no other. According to the CBA Tiger, the USC has an important perspective: CHANGE. For this year, we should expect that the USC would advocate pro information and would stand to feed information to the public. We should fasten our seatbelts as we are about to experience a “competitive” year like no other; this Matthew assured.

Indoorsy much? Well, books may be your perfect bestfriend. But what to read? Take a moment and feel the magic rush into you! Yes, welcome yourselves on the world of fantasy. According to the UK Children’s Reading Habits survey, fantasy as a book genre reigned supreme the previous year. From dystopian settings, to wizards, and even mythical gods and goddesses, name it, they have it. Take a great escapade from reality and dip yourself on the marvelous waters of make-believe. Don’t know what kingdom to take flight first? Here’s a roll of what might tingle your imagination.

Sweet Evil Wendy Higgins

This is the first of Higgins’ trilogy. The story revolves in the question, what if your life lies on playing “the evil one”? Anna Whit always used to be a good girl until she met Kaidan Rowe who showed her the real world of Nephilims. Finding out that she’s half-fallen and half-angel; will her two halves make a whole? Or will she find out that it tastes good to be bad?

Wicked Lovely

Melissa Marr Aislinn has always lived by three rules to keep her alive: don’t stare at invisible faeries, don’t speak to invisible faeries and don’t ever attract their attention. Aislinn has been a good follower of these rules until she met Keenan, the Summer King and a faerie. Packed with faerie politics, mortal love, and ancient rules and expectations, this book will have you laughing and crying in an

emotional rollercoaster ride of “epic-ness.”

Cruel Beauty

Rosamund Hodge If Beauty and the Beast caught your heartstrings, then this book might be a companion. Aside from learning the Hermetic arts her whole life, the heroine, Nyx, was tasked to kill her fiancée, or die trying on her quest to free her country from his evil reign. What came unplanned was she fell for him. The enthralling story is a true page-turner that will knock you off your feet.

Private discussion rooms

Addiction to social networking sites has unquestionably gone far afield. Want to know the latest trends online? Want to update your status and upload photos while taking a break? Things we can’t get enough of can now be done anywhere you are, whether at Professional School (PS) Building or at the Main Campus, thanks to the free Wi-Fi. All you have to do is register your gadget at the Management Information System and Services (MISS), go online and enjoy your Internet browsing.

Research on the lab Want to have a meeting with your group members privately? Our libraries have discussion rooms where you can have a group meetings and talk about lectures, seminars and projects. Student Organizations are the most frequent visitors of these private chamers since they conduct meetings there to organize events and the likes. The library is conducive, providing information needs of students.

Tutorials, anyone? Whenever you forget to do your research project, or to research about your report, instead of going to Internet Cafés where you would still have to pay, you can do a free research in our very own computer lab. Where? It is located at the PS Building, 1st floor. Accessing our own computer lab would be less hustle and the most importantly, we wouldn’t have to spend anything at all. Don’t forget to bring your ID though.

Know the feeling that no matter how much we study on a particular subject, we just can’t get our desired grades? But there’s no need to worry, every college has their own free tutorials. These free tutorials are conducted by Honor Societie (HonSoc), also known as AUF scholars that can help us understand a particular subject. Whenever major examinations are coming up, check out the bulletin boards, they usually posts their free tutorials schedules there.

How about a workout?

In the AUF Sports and Cultural Center (SCC) there’s a gym located at the third floor where you can work out. Also, you can play sports such as basketball or volleyball at the second floor or maybe jog around the third floor. Moreover, there’s also a good view in the 3rd floor where you can stay if you want to watch students having their P.E subject, athletes playing their sports or watch how the PEP Squad do their magic since they do their rehearsals there.

Check up at the clinic

If you’re not feeling well, you can have a free check up in the clinic. The University Health Services (UHS) offers medical services and dental services. They can give you the proper medicines so that you could feel better and they also provide comfortable facilities if you want to rest or take a nap. It is open to all students, faculty members, and personnel of the university.

Your very own scenic park

Are there too many people everywhere that you feel suffocated and you want to unwind? Well here’s the good news, no need to go far and look for beautiful parks because you can have a walk around the university where hallways will give you soothing and picturesque view of the Main Campus. You can do your home works on the long tables at the Mini Fontana, which is beside the Main Library, while hearing the pleasant flow of water coming from the fountain. There are plant boxes where you can sit around and chit-chat with your friends. You can also stay in the stone benches with umbrellas, even better when you’ve got snacks on your bag pack and enjoying the free the Wi-Fi. The admired Struggle Square that catches a glance and always will be the best symbol we’re going to remember about the university.

I’m certain now you know what to do and where to go next. So don’t get lost. There are a lot of things you can actually explore in the campus. Enjoy every single day with a fun, new experience and may you have the best university moments!

Be a Dream Catcher ...................................... by Nika jaz herrera

A student life is like Mike Wizowski’s Monsters University life, a lot of people will tell you, “You don’t belong here.” As I look into an organizational chart, I couldn’t help but see exactly where I want to be but I just don’t know how I’ll ever get there.

“I’ve been waiting for this my whole life.” - Mike Wizowski “Good morning!”I smiled sweetly as I greet everyone I see along the hallway, although I’ve already been feeling all these butterflies in my stomach from the moment I stepped in at the university. Part of being a freshie is having that feeling of a good start when you can just plan ahead everything in your mind. What’s on my desk? A map and a calendar will serve as my reminders of how I’m doing with my school projects, activities and events. “Don’t listen to them. You just need to keep trying.” - Mike Wizowski Like what they say, things don’t always go the way you want them to be. It takes everything to make people believe in you but it only takes a small thing to make people doubt what you can do. It’s hard to be alone, alone in a crowd. I have lost a fight where I felt like no matter how much I do my best, I still feel useless. I wanted to go somewhere but my feet won’t move. I wanted to scream but I imprisoned myself in silence. I wanted to shed tears but I kept it inside where it has been killing me. To be fearless is what Mike Wizowski showed to be a dream catcher. His goals were strong. He does not look like the rest but that’s what made him different, that’s what made him special and incomparable. At the end of the movie, he has proudly proved what he needed to prove, and he has achieved more than what he should. Likewise, I may fall but I rise. I may fail but at least I tried. I make mistakes but that’s just how I learn. When things don’t go the way you wished them to be just think that God may have better plans for you, because sometimes it is the wrong choices that bring you to the right place. “Every dram begins somewhere . Some are born to greatness and some finds greatness on their own .” A student life is like Mike Wozowski’s Monsters University life, a lot of people will doubt what you can do but you just have to prove them wrong and keep moving because you know yourself enough to succeed and you know what you’re here for!

Planting Revelations in Someone's Backyard by Gabrielle santos

There was a girl by the age of sixteen, who liked the skies when the colour was a brightest blue, like living in a painting. She gave no notice to the boys puckering their lips to at least give her a signal, but she focused on plucking the thorns of the roses enclosing her. She didn’t want to leave her happy place, she didn’t want to leave it at all. But her grandmother enrolled her in a prestige college, where the skirts are green and the bricks were orange. She told herself not to be scared. She told herself that she wouldn’t dare leave behind her world, her world which the sun was numbed innocence and the moon was a mere guiltless object for her to gaze at, unlike the people around her age were doing. Now she is twenty, and she left that place. For the gates of wisdom thrust her to seek for a new world, where she matured beautifully and did not dare feign indifference. Because she realized she could be gold wherever she goes, and gold shall she be.

The First by E

The halls were close to empty Stairs take time to reach what’s there Clock ticked louder with every step The pressure tightens my breath Firsts make history I hope mine makes the charts From silence to the boisterous laughter I found my zone Now you’re here Make it matter Never hesitate to ask God’s assistance You’ll be needing it through the whole journey

With his skills and athleticism, Anton participated in numerous events held in Pampanga and even in the vicinity of Manila. During a tourney held at Taguig City, Anton was awarded as one of the “Mythical 7”, seven players who were considered as the best among the best. According to him, this is by far his greatest achievement in this sport. And he is sure more awards are on the way.

ON THE EXTACY OF PLAYING THE DISC

Sa mga dati kong sports nasa isip ko lagi manalo, dito ko lang sa Frisbee inisip na magenjoy lang talaga. Wala yung competition sa isip ko pag naglalaro.

Anton is also affiliated to the “Empe Lights” or Pampanga Emperors, an elite team of Frisbee players. His happiness toward the game is truly outstanding. Anton aspires to play alongside or against the greatest players both locally and internationally.
