About Me

Who I am

Hello there! Recently, my partner Ethan and I decided to relocate to Toronto after two and a half years of working in Auckland, New Zealand, in search of a new adventure this April. Being Canadian-born, I have always considered Canada my home and can’t wait to be back. After completing my master’s degree, my passion for sustainable design was sparked. While in Vancouver, I collaborated with the University of British Columbia and the Vancouver City government on initiatives aligned with the city’s ambitious net-zero construction goals. My previous studio fostered a landscape-based design philosphy, that emphasizes environmental sensitivity, community integration, and cultural nuance. As a result of these collective values, my portfolio centers around robust designs that cultivate meaningful spaces for both people and the land. Sustainability holds dear to me and has manifested itself in teaching at the University part-time alongside my professional work, as well as a prompt for topics conveyed in my student work. In my next role, I would like to leverage my technical skills gained from extensive experience in detailed design phasing across various large scale apartment projects and transition into public-facing typologies. I can think of no better architecture than one that everyone can enjoy. After 3000+ hours in documentation, I am committed to furthering my experience across other project phases to become a registered Architect in Ontario over the coming years. Jimmy’s Point apartments—currently nearing the end of its construction—occupies a prime site at the heart of Hobsonville Point. The building lifts gently from the coastal environment, stitched into the ground with a landscape design that welcomes residents home and connects them to the surrounding community. Isthmus took the project forward from developed design to construction, building on the work of Studio Pacific Architecture at resource consent stage. Continuous connection of the landscape from each floor of the building is achieved by elevating the building to allow the landscape running underneath, connecting the cliff edge through the building and back to the oval green space.

The exterior cladding includes glass-reinforced concrete panels (GRC) to the ground, with black aluminum spandrels and powder-coated RHS at interstory and spandrels. Terracotta tile panels wrap all other facades, with varying sizes of terracotta fin profiles in front. Apartment finishes were scheduled in a light and dark scheme option for purchasers, along with a variation for the two premium unit typologies. During site observation and procurement, I collaborated with our contractors in managing the finishes for each apartment type, accommodating any purchaser variations requested, and incorporating value engineering changes that arose from the client following detailed design. Apartment finishes include timber veneer plank flooring in kitchens, wool carpet in living and bedrooms, and tiling in bathrooms and laundries. Kitchens feature stone benchtops with a waterfall design on islands, woodgrain timber-look laminate, and integrated appliances.

Wellington Apartments is a large-scale social housing typology for Kainga Ora (a government institution), providing 76 units ranging from 1 to 3 bedrooms. Additionally, two 4-bedroom duplexes are situated at the back of the site. This project, taken on by Isthmus after concept design and resource consenting, aimed to rationalize existing concepts into a robust and simple design, ensuring warm, dry homes for whanau and the community in need. Utilizing logics and repetition of apartment typologies, expression of fenestrations, and a symmetrical form, Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) emerged as the perfect choice for the primary structure. Surrounding and between punching windows and balconies, 300mm terracotta panels in three different colors were incorporated. The 300mm cladding width established a rigid module size for windows, unit dimensions, and structural spans. Simultaneously, the diverse colors distinguished the blocks, imparting individuality and visually diminishing the overall scale to smaller block, in conjunction with a dark ‘plinth’.

Draft for discussion only.

The lobbies function as ‘streets,’ cutting through the building and seamlessly integrating the exterior brick cladding and aggregate concrete floor inside. This design extends to a gradual descent along with the landscape. Timber accents add warmth, while the dado ply ensures durability at minimal costs. The laundry and rubbish rooms are conceived as ‘storefronts,’ offering spaces to rest or wait and creating flexible bump spaces. Interior design concepts for the lobbies and apartment units underwent monthly

presentations to the client and ECI during development. These concepts were initially established and tested in Sketchup and Enscape, later integrated into our central Revit model after client confirmation. My responsibilities encompassed the design development of the cores alongside our Principal and team members, providing presentation updates, leading the documentation of common areas and apartment units, and achieving Lifemark Level 4 certification—a testament to meeting accessibility standards.

The Happiness Machine

Welcome to Cloudbank; an oligopoly metropolis governed by monetary exchange, investment and the intrinsic value of things, people, and architecture. As you wake, eat, work, bathe, consume entertainment, sleep and repeat, you feel content in the routine that plays out every day, week, and year. Every day is the same and every architecture is the same; repetitions of developments within the same block, rectangular buildings in rectangular organisations. Surely there is more to it? More to living as a value amongst other values... more to the architecture that has been consumed by the profit that can be extracted from it or saved. This thesis seeks to explore the ways in which architecture has been subjected to and used as a tool of investment in generating capital, that in its effect has shown to instigate several social and economic conflicts of individuality, exclusivity, alienation, corporate greed and consumption.

The following content was presented in the form of an animation visual on the 28th of April, 2021. Each drawing comes to life to further its immersion and the narrative.

Regeneration Pavilions

Heavily influenced by Hayao Miyozaki’s film Castle in the Sky, the Regeneration Pavilions are a series of pavilions situated across the island of Yakushima. Following the affects of deforrestation felt across the island, the pavilions act as a catalyst for regeneration through ceremonial seed dispersion, whilst acknowledging the history of place. Intensely important to the project were the local ecologies and weather patterns to determine the designs, habitation, construction details, and use of the pavilions to ultimately create an architectural journey made with not only humans in mind.

Regeneration Pavilions

Three types of pavilions are stayed at throughout the journey, ascending a local mountain at different elevations. Each of the three pavilions are dedicated to a certain method of allochory - the first being zoochory (seed dispersion via animals), the second hydrochory (seed dispersion via water), and the final pavilion situated at the top of the mountain ascent - anemochory (seed dispersion via wind).
