Matthew Trusler is joined by the internationally renowned pianist Martin Roscoe in performances of sonatas by Elgar, Janácek and Debussy, all written during the Great War.

Accompanying the music are readings, spoken by radio broadcaster Petroc Trelawney, which draw on Wilfred Owen’s letters and poems, mainly written between 1917 and 1918. They reveal Owen’s moral courage and humanity triumphing over the worst possible conditions.

Returning to The Hexagon, under their Principal Conductor, the Russian State Symphony Orchestra bring a luxurious Russian programme, with favourite works by Prokofiev, Tchaikovsky and Stravinsky. And with them, to play Tchaikovksy’s fiendishly difficult Violin Concerto, is Russian violinist, Natalia Lomeiko. Having won numerous prizes including Menuhin, Stradivari, Tchaikovsky and Premio Paganini International Violin Competitions, Natalia has established herself as a versatile performing artist. Tonight the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra will be celebrating the musical brilliance of John Williams, undoubtedly one of the world’s most prolific and respected film composers. As the most Oscarnominated man alive, John Williams unleashed the power of the film score in over seventy-five blockbuster classics, creating one of the greatest film composer/director collaborations ever with the great Steven Spielberg. Radu Lupu is firmly established as one of the most important musicians of his generation and is widely acknowledged as a leading interpreter of the works of Beethoven, Brahms, Mozart and Schubert. Since winning the prestigious Van Cliburn (1966) and Leeds Piano Competitions (1969), Mr Lupu has regularly performed as soloist and recitalist in the musical capitals and major festivals of Europe and the United States. Born in Romania in 1945, Radu Lupu began studying the piano at the age of 6 with Lia Busuioseanu. He made his public debut, aged 12, with a complete programme of his own music. Centred on the chant ‘O Magnum Mysterium’, often recited at Mass on Christmas morning, The Sixteen’s concert features much-loved works by Byrd, Lauridsen, Palestrina and Victoria exploring how each of these composers has set the chant to music. Palestrina’s six-part motet expresses the joy and awe felt by the shepherds as they celebrated Christ’s birth, while Lauridsen’s deeply spiritual piece is described by him as ‘a quiet song of profound inner joy.’ Alongside these, the group will perform John Ireland’s wistful carol The Holy Boy, Will Todd’s expressive and heartfelt My Lord has Come and Walford Davies’ setting O Little Town of Bethlehem. With carols for all and Peter Warlock’s popular Bethlehem Down, this will be the perfect way to enter into the spirit of Christmas.

With a voice described by International Record Review as "one of the most beautiful Britain has produced in a generation" Elizabeth Watts has quickly established a career at the highest level. She represented her country in the 2007 BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition, where she won the coveted Rosenblatt Recital Song Prize. A former Kathleen Ferrier Prizewinner, she was also a BBC 'New Generation Artist' and is currently an Artist in Residence at the Southbank Centre, London . In this recital she is joined by the distinguished accompanist, Roger Vignoles.

Born in 1984 in Moscow, Boris Giltburg began his piano studies with his mother at the age of five. In 2013 he received First Prize at the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels, as a result of which his already flourishing international career has been catapulted to a new level, with a packed diary of additional concert engagements across the globe. In the same year he was nominated for a Classic Brit (Critics’ Award). Since his breakthrough appearance with the Philharmonia in 2007, Giltburg has been an annual visitor to the Royal Festival Hall in London, and made his BBC Proms debut in 2010 with the BBC Scottish Symphony.

Born in Beijing, Xuefei Yang is acclaimed as one of the world’s finest classical guitarists. Born following the Cultural Revolution, an era where Western music & instruments were banned, the fascinating story of Fei’s rise to the world stage, is that of a musical pioneer. She was the first ever guitarist in China to enter a music school, and became the first to launch an international professional career. Her first public appearance at the age of ten, at the China International Guitar Festival, received such acclaim that the Spanish Ambassador in China immediately presented her with a concert guitar.

Michael Collins' dazzling virtuosity and sensitive musicianship have made him one of today's most sought-after soloists. At 16 he won the woodwind prize in the first BBC Young Musician of the Year Competition and at 22 made his American dĂŠbut at Carnegie Hall, New York.

Enchanting audiences worldwide, esteemed virtuoso Janina Fialkowska performs Mozart’s Piano Concerto No.24. At the summit of Mozart’s creative genius, the work’s unique quality is fashioned through the ominous darkness of the minor key, and a touch of Mozart’s elegance, renders it all the more poignant. Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture depicts the Scottish scenery at Fingal’s Cave with mysteriously intense melodies and calmer passages, capturing both the stormy tides and still waters. The concert concludes with Tchaikovsky’s turbulent Symphony No.5, in which (according to Tchaikovsky) the opening motif signified his ‘complete resignation before fate’. It remains as one of his most admired large-scale creations.

Did Brahms love Clara Schumann, the widow of his mentor? He certainly tried to. After a seemingly irreconcilable argument in September 1868, Brahms wrote to Clara from the Swiss Alps, scribbling a tune he’d heard played by a shepherd boy. ‘High on the mountain, deep in the valley, I greet you’, wrote Brahms, and the shepherd’s tune became the radiant horn-call that soars over the strings in the finale of his First Symphony like sunlight breaking through clouds. Clara inhabits the whole work, in a special musical ‘motto’ woven by Brahms and in the anguished love that seeps into every bar. A similar emotional turmoil also inhabits Elgar’s noble but fierce Cello Concerto, performed here by rising star Andreas Brantelid. The London Philharmonic Orchestra is lead by internationally renowned conductor Jaime Martín, who opens this April concert with a homage to the season from Delius’s elegant and evocative On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring.

Narek Hakhnazaryan was propelled on to the international scene when, at the age of 22, he won the Cello First Prize and Gold Medal at the XIV International Tchaikovsky Competition in 2011, having impressed distinguished jury members such as Sir Clive Gillinson, Mario Brunello, David Geringas, Ralph Kirschbaum and Krzysztof Penderecki. He has since received critical press from both sides of the Atlantic, with the Daily Telegraph describing his playing “a marvel of musicality and technique combined” and the Washington Post describing him as “a seasoned phenomenon”. Narek will be accompanied by Kazakstan-born pianist, Oxana Shevchenko, who won the Best Accompanist Prize at the 2011 Tchaikovsky International Competition. She was accompanying Narek, the eventual winner of the competition.

Emma Johnson needs very little introduction. One of the few clarinettists to have established a busy solo career which has taken her to major European, American and Asian venues as well as to Africa and Australasia, after she won BBC Young Musician of the Year in 1984 and later she became a winner of the Young Concert Artists Auditions in New York - both whilst still at school. Emma is still in great demand as a soloist, collaborative artist, composer, arranger, equally at home with classical and jazz.

A display of quintessentially Czech music from two Bohemian legends, with Smetana’s exhilarating Overture to his first and most enduring comic opera The Bartered Bride and Dvořák’s magnificent Cello Concerto, performed by world-class cellist Natalie Clein. Although composed in America, it expresses the melodic inflections derived from Czech folk music with a continuous flow of invention and lyricism. Young Spanish Maestro Eduardo Portal will lead the Orchestra in the tale of ‘One Thousand and One Nights’ in Rimsky-Korsakov’s colourful epic Scheherazade. Heard is the mysteriously haunting sound of the violin voice of Scheherazade, as she calms the Sultan’s menacing brass fanfares with the strumming of the harp, calling to mind a mysterious far-away land.

Award-winning chamber choir, Tenebrae, will be performing an exquisite collection of little-known gems rarely heard outside Russia, as well as some familiar favourites from this vast area of choral repertoire. This programme was inspired by the rare manuscripts collected by director Nigel Short during his travels around Russia. Russian choral music has been a feature in Tenebrae’s concert performances since the choir’s inception and over the years they have worked extensively with Russian language coaches whilst nurturing their own characteristics of passion and precision to deliver a special and heartfelt tribute to the music of these great composers. Freddy Kempf is one of today’s most successful pianists, performing to sell-out audiences all over the world. Exceptionally gifted with an unusually broad repertoire, Freddy has built a unique reputation as an explosive and physical performer not afraid to take risks as well as a serious, sensitive and profoundly musical artist. Born in London in 1977, Freddy made his concerto debut with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of 8. He came to national prominence in 1992 when he won the BBC Young Musician of the Year Competition. In 1998, his award of third, rather than first, prize in the Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in Moscow provoked protests from the audience and an outcry in the Russian press, which proclaimed him "the hero of the competition".
