SCHOOL GOES INTERNATIONAL

Rhiwbina Primary School has recently welcomed a number of foreign students through its doors as part of an exchange project. Pupils from Germany, Italy and Sicily swapped places with Rhiwbina pupils. The Europeans were treated to days out at the Senedd, Cardiff Castle and the Millennium Centre. Keith Harding, Deputy Headteacher at the school, arranged the project for pupils aged 10-11. He said: “The project has been amazing and the kids have really enjoyed it. It brings them an awareness of different cultures, understanding the differences and the similarities.” Rhiwbina councillor and deputy chair of governors, Jayne Cowan, said: “This is a wonderful project and it’s important that children learn about other cultures.” The school is looking to build on the success of the project, by delivering further exchanges in the future. “All the feedback we’ve had is positive. The more opportunities we can offer these children the better.” said Mr Harding. The project cost £17,000 and was funded by the British Council.

LOCALS GATHER TO CELEBRATE 50 YEARS OF PARC Y PENTRE

News

A plaque has recently been unveiled and a tree planted to mark the 50th anniversary of Parc y Pentre. Both the plaque and tree were funded by the Garden Village Residents Association. Local school children were present at the unveiling, which was also attended by local celebrity, Nicky the Sheep. Other dignitaries were also present to mark the special occasion. The tree planted was a Cytisus Battandieri tree, commonly known as the Pineapple Bloom. It is expected to produce yellow blossom and pineapple

scented flowers when it blooms next summer. Mary Clarke, chairperson for the association said: "This is a much loved landmark and its residents are very privileged to have a park where they can enjoy the beautiful surroundings in a safe environment. “These trees are an absolute delight and we hope that the next generation will appreciate and care for the park for many years to come. We have planted trees and flowering plants throughout the Garden Village for special occasions and for people to dedicate trees to loved ones."

Two gardens in Rhiwbina are opening to the public for the National Garden Scheme on Sunday 18th July. They are 89 Pen y Dre (Cardiff in Bloom prize winner) and 14 Lon Ysgubor. 89 Pen y Dre is a small but very interesting garden with palms, tree ferns, perennials and a conservatory with cacti and succulents, plus a pond with kois. Barcies Garden at

Lon Ysgubor is a terraced town garden with shrubs, hardy perennials and a newly installed pond.

LOCAL SCHOOLBOY TEEING UP FOR GOLFING SUCCESS Rhiwbina golfer Sam Mayer has become the youngest player to win a major adult single competition at the Ridgeway Golf Club in Caerphilly - at the age of just nine. Sam, who started playing golf at the age of four, finished second in last year’s British Young Master’s Golf tournament in Daventry by just one shot. Since then, he has been breaking record after record at the Ridgeway Club. He holds the record for being the youngest member of both the Junior Squad and the Adult Squad, and is also the youngest person to win an adult competition. He has also won both the adult summer and winter pairs with his playing partner Tom Bowen, who is 18. Sam, who can hit a golf ball 160 yards, first started playing as a very young child with a plastic golf set. His Dad admits that he is trying to cut down on the number of games that he plays against Sam to avoid the embarrassment of a good thrashing. Sam says that it is all down to good old-fashioned practice, regularly playing 36 holes on his days off school, and practising in the evenings. Sam also recently scored his first hole-in-one. When his Dad went looking for the ball, Sam told him to look in the hole. “I couldn’t believe it.”said his Dad, who now looks after the junior golfers at the club.

UNDERGROUND NUCLEAR BUNKER HIDDEN IN RHIWBINA

Rhiwbina residents will be surprised to know that an underground bunker exists off Wenallt Road. The bunker, built in 1951 as the Cold War took its grip on the world, includes dormitories, a canteen, a sick bay, water storage, air filtration, power generators and a pulse-proofed Faraday-

caged communications room. The bunker is now sealed off from visitors but can be spotted south-east of the telephone mast. The bunker is one of many old bunkers, command posts and nuclear shelters located underground around the city. The land on Wenallt Road is privately-owned by BT.

NOA HAS SUCCESS AT HER FINGERTIPS

A schoolgirl from Rhiwbina has won a prestigious award at this year’s Eisteddfod. 12 year old Noa Gabay, who lives on Heol Iscoed, won the Harp Competition for Years 7-9 at the National Urdd Eisteddfod last month. Noa has been playing the harp professionally for the last seven years and is the Principal Harpist for the National Children’s Orchestra of Great Britain. Her mother Yifat told Rhiwbina Living: “We are very proud of her achievements to date. Noa has learnt to play the harp at the junior department of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama on Saturdays. Winning at the Eisteddfod is such an achievement.” This year’s National Eisteddfod was held in Llanerchaeron, Ceredigion. This is the first time that the Eisteddfod has visited the area since Lampeter in 1999. Coverage of the Eisteddfod, including Noa’s recital can be found at S4C’s website, www.s4c.co.uk.

Noa Gabay and her harp. Noa won the Harp Competition at the National Urdd Eisteddfod. Beulah Hall is holding ballet classes on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and all day Saturday. There are classes for children from the age of two and a half up to eleven. Monday evening is a class for adults. If anyone is interested in their child learning the ‘Cecchetti Method’, contact Lesley Tipples on 02920 612251.

Do the Children of Llanishen Fach play in the fields where

Dear Editors,

Oliver Cromwell’s Great Grandfather played?

Over the years, I have heard references to Oliver Cromwell and Rhiwbina. There is an excellent but complicated examination of it in Edgar Chappell’s book on Old Whitchurch. In summary, he highlights the links of the area to the man known as the Lord Protector. There was once a large building near the old Farmhouse near Llanishen Fach Primary School. The area was part of a landholding given to a family called Williams, passed down from a forebearer called Ievan ap Morgan. Ievan’s family had previously lived at the Llanishen Fach homestead. Ievan was a renowned archer, who served as a retainer for Jasper, Duke of Bedford and Lord of Glamorgan. It is almost certain that when Henry Tudor raised his army, that Ievan and possibly his sons followed Jasper to Bosworth, where Henry gained the Throne from Richard III. His two sons were Morgan and John. Morgan was granted lands in the Putney area and he established himself as a brewer supplying the Royal Court. A neighbour was Walter Cromwell who had two children, Kathryn and Thomas. Kathryn married Morgan’s son Richard and her brother Thomas entered first

the service of Cardinal Wolsey and at the Cardinal’s death, the service of King John. What is certain is that the family retained the Llanishen estate for it was here that Richard, son of Morgan and Kathryn was born. Richard, like his brother-inlaw Thomas Cromwell, entered the service of Henry VIII. But unlike Thomas, who reached exalted rank only to lose his head in 1540, Richard prospered and was persuaded by the King to change his name to Cromwell some time before 1536. In the King’s service, he became Member of Parliament for Huntingdon and it was here that his son Sir Henry Cromwell was born. Henry had two sons and it was his second son Robert, who was the father of Oliver Cromwell. Hence it is likely that the playgrounds of Llanishen Fach School are on the fields where Richard Cromwell, greatgrandfather of Oliver, once played as a child. There are legal documents regarding the purchase of land in Rumney by a certain Richard Williams (alias Richard Cromwell) and the Cromwell Coat of Arms (which was also the Williams Coat of

School picture courtesy of Llanishen Fach Primary School

Arms) was identical to the Coat of Arms of the Lewis of Van family, of New House Greenmeadow, Rhiwbina. The Lewis family regarded the Williams as a junior branch of the family. I acknowledge that my information is attributed to Edgar Chappell’s book, which was originally published in 1945. Gareth Neale Heol-y-Deri Rhiwbina

Oliver Cromwell (25 April 1599 – 3 September 1658) was an English military and political leader, best known for his involvement in making England into a republican Commonwealth and for his later role as Lord Protector of England and Scotland.

On Monday 7th June, an Open Evening was held at the Heath Veterinary Group in Rhiwbina for the local Beaver Group. The Beavers had the opportunity to explore how the animals are cared for in the practice. They were given a guided tour of the surgery, in which they saw all of the facilities that are used to treat the animals. They also received a talk on how to care for pets at home. The Beavers played a number of games which they thoroughly enjoyed. By the end of the Open Evening, the Beavers had gained their Animal Care Badge and also received a personal certificate of achievement from the Heath Veterinary Group which made them very proud.

Dear Rhiwbina Living, Having entered the Neil Sedaka competition last issue (and to my surprise winning it), I have to thank you for giving my partner and I the opportunity to experience a wonderfully entertaining night at the Millennium Centre. The nostalgia of hearing the timeless songs bought back many memories (of a misspent youth perhaps!). It was a brilliant production and we also learnt the history of the man. Michael Cadwallader

Biography

I

t’s hard to think of what connects Star Wars, Bob Dylan and James Cameron to North Cardiff. But all of these have featured in the life of Llanishen-born film director Richard Marquand. Born in 1938 to Hilary Marquand MP, and mother Rachel, Richard was educated at King’s College, Cambridge (where he studied Modern Languages) and at L’Universite d'Aix-Marseille, France. He started his career in show-business as a newscaster in Hong Kong. But it was at the BBC where Richard began learning his film-making craft. In partnership with producer James Cameron, he worked

Rhiwbina Living Page 10

From north Cardiff to a galaxy far, far away... on the 1971 series Search for the Nile. The show, filmed on location, followed the highs and lows of explorers looking for sources of the Nile. Starring Kenneth Haigh and narrated by James Mason, the series was a critical success, earning it a Golden Globe nomination. Richard turned his honed documentary techniques to the dramatised 1979 TV movie The Birth of the Beatles. The film followed the early days of the Fab Four and starred Nigel Havers and John Altman, who went on to play ‘Nasty’ Nick Cotton in Eastenders. The Eye of the Needle followed in 1981 starring Donald Sutherland. Richard’s directing prowess did not go

unnoticed. Richard had caught the eye of George Lucas, who had achieved acclaim with this two Star Wars movies. George Lucas decided that he wanted Richard to direct the third installment of the Star Wars trilogy. He explained later that Richard: “...had done some great suspense films and was really good with actors. Eye of the Needle was the film I'd seen that he had done that impressed me the most; it was really nicely done and had a lot of energy and suspense.” Lucas had considered Steven Spielberg and David Lynch but in taking up the post, Richard became the only non-American to direct a Star Wars film.

Biography Rumour circulated at the time that Richard and George Lucas didn’t get on too well during filming. This was denied by George Lucas during his commentary for the film’s DVD release. It was also backed up by Richard’s son, James, who was on set as a teenager. He testifies first hand that Richard was brought to do Star Wars precisely because he was good with actors, saying that: “You could always ask Harrison Ford, with whom Richard had worked before.” Richard once said: "I'm very interested in directing actors many directors direct cameras." Originally, George Lucas was disapproving of Richard's choice in casting Ian McDiarmid as The Emperor. The choice eventually grew on Lucas, as he eventually went on to cast McDiarmid as the younger version of the same character in the next three episodes of the Saga. In an interview during filming Richard expressed his fondness for Chewbacca: "He's very laid back, and he never completely knows what's going on around him. He isn't a heroic character, but he gets himself in these situations where he's got to come through." Return of the Jedi was shot and completed in less than a year, unlike all the other Star Wars films but went on to become the biggest grossing film of 1983. It took more than $250 million from a $32 million budget in 1983, and then another $40 million in its 1997 re-release. The film was a huge success for the

James Marquand

Cardiff-born director. Richard’s next film was Until September, which was released in 1984. Jagged Edge, released in 1985, starred Jeff Bridges and Glenn Close. The film was written by Joe Eszterhas, who later went on to pen Basic Instinct (using the very same typewriter to write the scripts). Jagged Edge was a box office hit. Richard even cheekily had a Return of the Jedi poster put up on a child’s bedroom set and this can be seen in the film. Robert Loggia received an Academy Award nomination as Best Supporting Actor for his role in the film. Richard teamed up once again with Joe Eszterhas in 1987, in his next film Hearts of Fire. The film featured Bob Dylan as an errant rock star and was filmed partly on location in Southerndown and Coney Beach at Porthcawl. The film was received poorly but Richard was never to see the film released. Shortly after completing the film, and at the age of 49, Richard suffered a stroke and sadly passed away. Son James attended the premier of the film in Richard’s stead. Richard’s legacy continues to this day however. James is now a film director in his own right, and has released several films of his own.

Like his father, he has also impressed George Lucas. James’s directorial debut Dead Man’s Cards, was such a hit with the Star Wars supremo, that he has asked James to direct the live-action television series of the franchise, which is due to debut in 2011. George Lucas told Time magazine: "It's kind of like Episode IV (Return of the Jedi) - it's funny and there's action, but it's a lot more talky. It's more of what I would call a soap opera with a bunch of personal dramas in it." It seems that the Marquand name will continue to have its influence on the Star Wars phenomenon for some time to come yet.

Kids

Squidgy the Squirrel’s Page Summer - Fun things to do Windowsill Bird Feeders

Inviting the birds to eat lunch on a sunny windowsill is great fun because you'll be surprised who may come to visit. This nature project can be as simple as setting out mixed bird seed, or selected seeds and other foods to entice certain breeds of birds. The window chosen for this purpose should be on a quiet and sheltered side of the house if possible. Nearby trees and shrubbery will attract more birds. Branches of thorn apples, alders and evergreens can be fastened firmly to the window frames to dress the lunch counter on the outside, while house plants or a curtain should be placed on the inside as a screen. The kind of food placed on your sill determines the kind of birds that will be found visiting. Seed-eating birds are readily attracted by the use of small

grains such as oats and wheat. For those in the city who would need to buy seeds, it will be just as well to get hemp, millet, canary seed and sunflower seed, together with the small grains and cracked corn for foods. Bread crusts or crumbs, crackers and doughnuts may be placed out with the knowledge that the birds will eat them. Suet, scraps of meat and various vegetable scraps, such as celery, lettuce, apples, raisins, and berries are also popular. All birds require water and frequently suffer when this may not be available in the summer months. If it is possible, place a small bowl of water out for them to drink from. There is a large selection of open-sided bird feeders that are ready-made and on sale from garden centres, hardware stores or online. Some of these are ideal for perching on top of a window sill, offering roof protection from summer rain while still allowing a good view of the birds through the open sides. You could then start keeping a bird diary of all your visitors. If you have a camera, you can even add photos to the diary to keep track of all your summer visitors.

Make a Cutlery Windchime

For younger readers, you can make a windchime from plastic cutlery and a paper plate. First, cut lengths of string measuring between 4 and 6 inches. Then tie the string to the ends of the cutlery, which should have holes made by a responsible adult. Next poke some holes into the paper plate, thread the string through and tie a knot in each piece. Finally, fasten three pieces of string to the top of the plate. You can decorate the paper plate with crayons, paint, markers or paper. Older readers could use metal cutlery, the holes being drilled beforehand by a responsible adult.

eading some back copies of Rhiwbina Living has brought back many happy memories of my childhood in Rhiwbina. My parents moved from Roath to Rhiwbina in 1941 to escape from the bombing during the early years of the war. We lived alongside the railway line and I used to wave to the drivers of the steam trains as they passed by. I started school in Rhiwbina Infants, and a school photograph of my class in 1942, has 23 pupils. I think my school teacher was Miss Dyer.

When the school canteen was opened in 1944, my mother was appointed as the cook, and worked there for a number of years. Mr T Pugsley, the Headmaster was a family friend and he was also a guest at my wedding. In June 1949, the first Carnival in the village was held and my friend was chosen as the Carnival Queen. I was her Chief Attendant. We had been selected for this by ladies of the Fete Committee at the Wendy Hut. I loved the shops - there was Tanner’s Dairy, Rayboulds the

The Garden Village

R

A city in the country

hiwbina’s famous Garden Village highlights many of ideas developed by Raymond Unwin, one of the leading architects of the Garden City Movement. The Garden City Movement was an approach to urban planning that was intended to be planned, self-contained, communities surrounded by greenbelts, containing carefully balanced areas of residences, industry and agriculture. Development began in January 1912, when a small society was set up to ‘promote experimental suburbs’. Leading the way was Professor Stanley Jevons, Professor of Economics at

Rhiwbina Living Page 20

University College, Cardiff who hailed from Llanishen. The society scouted Cardiff for a suitable site, before settling for what was known as the Pentwyn Estate in the north of the city. Although the aim of the society was to create a large suburb, the society erred on the side of caution and bought a 10-acre site at Rhiwbina Halt. Construction work started on 34 houses (Nos. 1-22 Y Groes, 2-20 Lôn Isa and Nos. 20-22 Lôn-y-Dail) on a rainy day in 1913. A grand opening ceremony was held outside 6 and 7 Y Groes, where the Earl of Plymouth, Prof. Jevons and Raymond Unwin addressed the crowds.

The Great War of 1914 threw the entire project into uncertainty, and indeed in August 1914, the Society heard the crushing news that the Housing Reform Company, which was overseeing Garden Village projects over the UK, had gone into liquidation. It seemed as if the end was nigh.

The Opening Ceremony in 1913

In November 1914, Prof. Jevons set off to take up a post at Allahabad, India. He had done all he could to make the development a success, but in his farewell address to the Society, he spoke of ‘the great sacrifices he had made in pursuit of his objectives’. It is clear that Prof. Jevons lost a lot of his own money in the project. The Society struggled on, and in 1915, their perseverance was rewarded when the Welsh Town Planning and Housing Trust very kindly took over all the Society’s debts totalling £22,000, and also provided capital that would allow the construction of more houses when the war was over. Demand for housing in the 1920s was on the increase, and the Society gave precedence to married children of members of the Society. In 1931, a great storm rolled in, causing the brook to burst its banks and flooding fourteen houses. Despite the added burden of the Great Depression, the Society set about doing all that they could

House Plan from 1913

to ease things for the villagers. Rents came down and they even took advantage of the empty properties to redecorate them and use them for marketing more houses. In 1939, war broke out again. Housing developments were again put on hold, and the Wendy Hut, which had been used as a meeting place for the Society, was now used as an Air Raid Warden’s post. Evacuees moved into the village which was deemed comparatively safe, although other parts of Rhiwbina were hit by bombs and several houses were flattened. The Garden Village remained unscathed though. After the war, the Society was forced to sell a number of properties as their finances had taken a hammering. But by 1968, their situation was so favourable, that a Special General Meeting was called, where tenants were told that they were to be offered the leasehold on their own homes on favourable terms. The crowd at first were stunned, but then broke into rapturous applause. The Society wound up in 1976, when they announced that they could no longer look after the finances. All financial assets were given to local charities. In February 1977, Cardiff City Council designated Rhiwbina Garden Village as a Conservation Area under the 1974 Town and Country Amenities Act. The Council wrote that: “The area is of historic interest as a unique example of early 20th century village planning. The design

embodies principles of pedestrian and vehicular separation not widely used until decades later. It was originally an estate of workers’ housing built in a semi-rural idiom, and was begun in 1913. Of special interest is the architectural style used throughout the Village, which utilises distinctive forms and a limited range of simple materials. Trees, hedges and greens were an integral part of the original design, and enhance the semi-rural character of the area.” This meant that inhabitants within the area came under many regulations. Any demolition required planning consent; the Council could enforce works necessary to maintain the area’s character; and in addition, even the most important trees and hedges were covered by the Tree Preservation Order. Permission had to be obtained before any felling or pruning could be carried out. The Council even provided leaflets on how to maintain the character of the building.

To Flea or Not to Flea?

My dog Charlie has suddenly started itching and I’ve found a few fleas on him. He hasn’t been out with other dogs or in boarding kennels, and the cat seems fine. Where did they come from?

We often see sudden outbreaks of flea infestation at the start of the summer when the weather warms up a little. During the cold winter months, fleas have been present in small numbers, not sufficient to cause your pets any trouble, but laying eggs in the carpets and bedding at home. The eggs have hatched and developed to pupae, many of which remain dormant until the weather warms up in early summer, when they all hatch out together. The result is an infestation which has ‘come from nowhere’. To get your current problem under control, you need a three-pronged approach: • First, you need to get rid of the fleas on Charlie. The easiest way to do this is with a spot-on insecticide applied to the back of his neck, or with tablets. • Second, you must remove the flea eggs, larvae and pupae in the home. Start with a thorough vacuuming, remembering all the nooks and crannies. Then apply a generous dose of an environmental flea control containing an “insect growth regulator” rather than insecticide. This must last at least 6 months. • Thirdly, you need to treat the cat to prevent his fleas laying more eggs to re-infest Charlie. We all (dogs, cats and humans) vary in our sensitivity to flea bites, and it’s very likely that your cat has as many fleas as the dog but he reacts less so you don’t see him itch. Again, there is a choice of treatments - spot-on insecticides, tablets, or an injection. Finally, you should take steps to ensure you never get caught out again by putting in place an effective yearround flea prevention programme for both dog and cat. I find the most convenient and effective is a monthly tablet for dogs and a twice-yearly injection for cats. You will find a myriad of treatments for fleas in the pet shops and supermarkets. All but a very few have poor effects, and we regularly see flea problems in pets who have been treated with over-the-counter products. Buy prescription treatments from your vet – you will be able to discuss the best approach for your particular situation, and although they may cost a bit more, they are guaranteed to work!

Should Baby Come First?

My partner and I are thinking of starting a family. We currently have a two year old male spaniel, but we are concerned that the energetic nature of the dog would cause problems. We aren’t cruel enough to get rid of the dog, but neither are we sure that he can live with us and a baby.

I think you are right to ask this question, but I believe your worries are misplaced. Certainly a two-year old spaniel is a very energetic dog, and no doubt takes up a great deal of your time and attention at present. But spaniels make great family dogs and generally adapt well to changing circumstances. When baby arrives, you will be very busy, but I am sure you will be able to find enough time to give the dog a decent walk every day. It’s important to get him used to the new regime before baby comes, so he doesn’t ‘blame’ baby for the changes. So plan beforehand when you will walk him and introduce that routine a couple of months before. Also, reduce the level of close contact you have with him now. For example, stop allowing him upstairs at night, don’t have him cuddled up between you on the sofa in the evening. Then he will be used to having less of your attention and will not be jealous when baby takes priority. If there are any behaviour problems such as guarding (food or territory) or anxiety when left alone, you should get professional help now as they could be exacerbated by the arrival of baby.

Former BBC1 DIY SOS Interior Designer, Deborah Drew, has recently joined Gallery Loft Conversions as Director of Design and Marketing: “I am very excited about my partnership with Gallery Loft Conversions, a company who I know have a natural passion for both their customer service and the quality of their workmanship. The new showrooms are such an exciting concept and an absolute 'must' for those who are contemplating a loft conversion, as few people find it easy to visualise the end results from plans alone; the showrooms will change all that because this will make it tangible for them. In addition our customers will also be offered a private interior design consultation with myself which will be personally tailored to each brief. Ultimately this will give our customers confidence while we build them something extra special and designed with them in mind. I look forward to meeting everyone at the launch.”

Out and About

T

he history of North Cardiff can be found in the roots beneath its soil. Underneath villages that we are familiar with today, lies the blood and toil of over 1,000 years of history. Llanishen, to the east of Rhiwbina, is no exception. Over 1,500 years ago in AD 535, two monks headed to the area from Llandaff, in order to create new ‘llans’, or settlements. For one of the monks, Isan, the area at the southern base of Caerphilly Mountain was perfect. The location benefitted from fresh running water from the Nant Fawr stream nearby. The site remained largely untouched until the arrival of William the Conqueror and his troops, twenty years after the Battle of Hastings. Control was handed over to Robert FitzHamon, William's Kinsman and Earl of Gloucester, who ensured that Welsh resistance was

subdued. It was at a subsequent battle in North Rhiwbina, that Iestyn ap Gwrgant was killed. The battle was so ferocious that the local stream became overflowed with blood, giving us the ‘Bloody Brook’ that runs through Rhiwbina to this day. The Normans set about enlarging Isan’s llan, constructing a church to the north in the 12th century (and dedicated to the now St Isan), and establishing an agricultural industry which remained largely untouched until the late 1800s. Until 1871, the Taff Vale Railway enforced an iron grip on the rail links between the coalfaces of the valleys to the docks at Cardiff. But that year, the Rhymney Railway was granted access to build a line from Caerphilly. The tunnel that was bored through Caerphilly Mountain caused a number of fatalities, many of whom are buried at St Isan’s Church.

The arrival of the railway had an almost immediate impact on the suburb – its population rose, the relatively quiet location becoming a draw to those from the city with wealth. Such was the rise in population that in 1887, two reservoirs were constructed and in 1922, Llanishen became officially part of Cardiff. The Second World War had a profound effect on the village. At the outset, a Royal Ordnance Factory was established by the government to produce tank and anti-tank guns. Around its perimeters, defences were set up to stop any airborne German forces attacking. The RAF set up a regiment base, introducing a glider training facility. The Glider Field, (opposite where Llanishen Leisure Centre now is) is where the gliders would launch, at first relying on a car tow to get them airborne, and later on in the war, balloon Photo © Rhiwbina Living 2010

barrage winches. Wing Commander Guy Gibson (of Dambusters fame) visited the base in 1943, even taking to the skies in a glider with the trainees. The unit was replaced soon after by the US Army; gliders replaced with Piper Cubs. The soldiers were billeted around the village, becoming regular and popular inhabitants until June 1944. The village suddenly became deserted of visitors as the American guests found themselves on the D-Day beaches of Northern France. Post-war, Llanishen and the surrounding area lost its agricultural roots and welcomed an influx of housing and blue-collar businesses. Llanishen Business Park replaced farmland, and the ROF was turned into The Atomic Weapons Establishment in 1987. It was responsible for the design, manufacture and support of warheads for the United Kingdom's nuclear deterrent before closing its doors in 1997. The area has now been developed for housing purposes. Llanishen is now home to Welsh TV station for Wales, S4C, and also houses the Head Office for the Eisteddfod. Llanishen was also the birthplace of Richard Marquand, who directed the famous Star Wars film, Return of the Jedi. St Isan’s Church is at the heart of the village. Its architecture is in the English style with a white-washed interior. It is formed from the original Norman Church with a 15th Century tower. The

south Aisle was the former Nave, and the Lady Chapel the Sanctuary. Very little changed over the course of the centuries, but the building did undergo extensive building work in 1908. At the Oval Park, on the site of Llanishen’s first church, sits a tree. This is a replacement tree for the memorial tree that had been planted in 1993 by the Llanishen Historical Society. This was recently blown over and uprooted by strong winds. Cardiff’s City Parks Department replaced the tree, which is Hungarian Oak. Two familiar sights in modernday Llanishen are the HM Revenue and Customs buildings. Phase One, Gleider (Welsh for ‘glider’) House is an 11-storey structure which is over-looked by the 16-storey Phase Two building.

THE MILITARY GLIDER The Horsa was the primary glider used in the paratrooper landings at both D-Day in June 1944 and Arnhem in September 1944. The gliders had a wingspan of 88 feet, a length of 67 feet, and were made almost entirely from 3-ply wood. Fully laden they weighed some 15,250 lbs- about 6.8 tonsand sank at about 400 feet a minute. The Horsa I was designed to carry 25 soldiers while the Horsa II had a hinged nose and carried vehicles and guns. Llanishen played a major role in training pilots. The picture (above) shows a glider landed in France (note the Cymru Am Byth and leek painted on to the side of the glider).

Behind the Scenes

A day in the Life of Rhiwbina Living D EA D LI N E D A Y

5.10am The small pitter-patter of paws across the bedroom floor heralds the arrival of the cat. He tries to jump up onto the bed, but immediately wants to get back down again. It has become clear that he’s not interested in cwtching up – he’s just after his breakfast.

6.30am A cup of tea while the computer fires up. First job of the day is to check the plan for the day- it’s going to be a long one! 7.00am Respond to emails. There’s one from a lady requesting back copies of Rhiwbina Living – she wants to send a copy to her friend (and former Rhiwbina girl) in Lincoln. 7.30am Get to work on a very late advert for Rhiwbina Living. The advertiser had called last night and needed their advert designed for them. An hour later, and their advert is ready to send for proofing. 8.30am Page plan needs to be updated to include the latest advertiser. A few pages are jiggled around, still trying to keep a good balance between editorial and adverts. 9.00am Post arrives. There is a letter from a man in Whitchurch who is offering to

pen a historical piece. Sounds great. I give him a call to arrange copy. Call to our printers to check that Whitchurch and Llandaff Living proofs are being delivered today. 10.00am Whitchurch and Llandaff Living proofs are delivered from the printers. All attention is turned to these. They are spread out on the dining table and scrutinised. A few slight inconsistencies have occurred throughout the proofing process. Calls are made to rectify these. New proofs to arrive by email later. 12.00pm Lunch with the cat in the garden.

1.00pm Rhiwbina Living is due at the printers in the morning. The final few news stories are typed up and dropped onto the pages. Amended Whitchurch and Llandaff Living pages arrive by email and are signed off by us. 4.00pm The late advertiser calls to say that there are a few changes that they need on their advert. Editorial work goes on hold as the advert is redesigned. Their advert is signed off immediately. An invoice is emailed across. 4.55pm A call is put in to our colleague at the Guardian, offering our services to a Blog Surgery later in the month to

help small organisations and charities raise their profile. 5.30pm Contents page is finalised and the Editor’s Welcome is finished - the last thing to go onto the pages. Now a great number of hours of proofing lie ahead. 7.30pm Time for a break. An hour is taken for some food and a break away from work. 8.30pm First proofing complete. Files updated on computer. 10.30pm A few more typos that were missed the first time around are highlighted and corrected. A third and final proofing is underway. 12.30am The final files are checked on screen for one last time. One of the pictures on the Rhiwbina Living proof looks discoloured - this didn’t show up on the printouts. The photo is adjusted and slotted back into the page. The magazine is checked again for any disruption. 2.10am The magazine file is put onto memory stick, instructions are typed up and printed. A short walk is taken across a sleeping Rhiwbina to our printer’s house, where we post the package for him to take to work the next morning. 2.30am Plan drawn up for tomorrow - updating the website and accounts. One last cup of tea before bed. The cat has been asleep for hours but will be awake in another three in time for breakfast.

Readers’ Gardens

The Beach House Garden For many of us, our hard work in the garden pays dividends when can sit back and relax at our handiwork. It was over 20 years ago that Annie Jones from Llandaff, studied horticulture at Pencoed College. Many years later, and five years after having been diagnosed with MS, Annie created her ‘Beach House Garden’ at her home in Rhiwbina. It was inspired by Eidfjord in Norway, local lakes and beaches and the gardens of Cornwall and Tresco. On moving into her bungalow, it was clear that the garden had been neglected for some time and consisted of only a concrete path, lawn, a concrete slab patio, the odd shrub, bluebells and wonderful Zantedeschia lilies. But the soil was good with plenty of sun and light and a wonderful landscape beyond which could be ‘borrowed’. The garden’s main structure was completed in the first year when the house was adapted for easier living – some decking, shallow steps, lighting, as well as the summerhouse and its power.

After the pond and stream way were finished (Gethin’s hard work), 20 tons of pebbles were laid on Mypex fabric by very strong sons and kind friends. The boardwalks (built by son Dafydd, partner Brian and friends Tony and Robert) have made things easier for wheels as well as the magnificent covered deck alongside the summerhouse built by Brian for Annie’s 50th birthday. A couple of years later, Brian constructed a roof for the upper deck which has been a huge success. It’s great when potting up in the rain, as well as a venue for breakfast, coffee, lunch and supper! Annie was walking and still working full time when the garden was designed in 1999 and though now a wheelchair user, she manages to container garden on the wooden decks and do at least some of the maintenance in the main garden. The Beach House Garden has inspired many people who live with the difficulties MS poses, and just shows how limited energy can still be used carefully to create a haven for those more difficult times.

With wonderful help from friends and family, the garden is maturing into a very special place where folks can come and enjoy the ambience. Offers of help are always welcome as there is plenty of sowing, planting, dividing and collecting garden detritus amongst the pebbles. More difficult days are good for sharing the place and dreaming of new ideas to keep Brian busy! The plants do extraordinarily well with the combination of sun, a constantly moist soil and the effect of the pebbles both reflecting the light and storing heat is a winner. Cordyline palms seem to grow twice as fast as in other situations and the spring, summer and autumn bulbs look stunning appearing out the pebbles. After a difficult year healthwise last year, Annie is opening the Beach House to visitors once more on Saturday June 26 to raise funds for the MS Trust – there’ll be refreshments and plants for sale. For further details call Annie Jones on 07967 637857.

Recipes

Summer is a time for heading out into the garden and kicking back with a cool drink. These recipes will really get your taste buds dancing so light the barbeque coals, relax, and enjoy the heady aromas and tastes of summer cooking

Mustard Chicken Burgers with Summer Salad

4 large chicken breast fillets 4 tbsp olive oil 2-3 tbsp Dijon mustard 1 garlic clove, crushed 1 loaf of ciabatta 1 tsp lemon juice snipped fresh chives to garnish salt and freshly ground black pepper For the salad: 50g/2oz baby spinach leaves 1 bunch of watercress, large stalks removed ½ small radicchio lettuce 4 tbsp mayonnaise 1 tbsp dijon mustard

Place the chicken breasts one at a time between two large sheets of clingfilm and beat out gently with a rolling pin until they are about 5mm thick and have almost doubled in size. Mix three tablespoons of the oil with the mustard and the

crushed garlic. Brush some of the mixture over both sides of the chicken, season with salt and pepper and set to one side. For the salad, place the prepared leaves into the bowl and lightly toss together. Mix the mayonnaise with the mustard and set aside with the salad. Cut the ciabatta in half lengthways as if you were going to make a sandwich and then across into four chunky pieces. Place cut-side down on the barbecue and leave for a couple of minutes until lightly toasted. Barbecue the chicken over medium-hot coals for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden on the outside but still juicy in the centre. Whisk the rest of the olive oil, lemon juice and some salt and pepper into the remaining mustard mixture. Add the salad leaves and toss together lightly. Place a piece of ciabatta on to each plate and spread with a little mustard mayonnaise. Sprinkle over a few leaves, then put the chicken on top, followed by more leaves. Add another dollop of the mustard mayonnaise and sprinkle with a few snipped chives. Top everything with a slice of ciabatta and serve the awaiting diners.

Barbequed Fruit 4 ripe pears, cored and quartered 4 ripe apples, cored and quartered 3 tbsp sugar 1 lemon, juice only icing sugar, for dusting crème fraîche, to serve

Place the pears and apples in a large bowl. Sprinkle over the sugar and the lemon juice. Using clean hands or a large spoon, toss the fruit in the sugar and lemon juice. Skewer the fruit alternating the pear and apple pieces. Place on a hot barbecue or griddle and turn until the fruit is softened and the sugar has caramelised. Dust liberally with icing sugar and serve with crème fraîche.
