Commodore’s Message

The Bridge

The China Coast Regatta was brilliant. Three days of great wind and sunshine is all one can hope for and Mother Nature surely delivered! Congratulations to Sam Chan / Free Fire, Tiffany Koo / Hero Racing Team, Glenn Smith / Blackjack, Lowell Chang / Dexter II, Peter Churchouse / Moonblue 2 and Alan Cheung / Bleu for winning their respective divisions. Thank you to Race Chairman Fred Kinmonth, Race Officer Commodore John Woo Inge Strompf-Jepsen, a team of 會長胡祖榮 dedicated volunteers and all the staff both on and off the water who made China Coast Regatta 2018 a resounding success. There was added excitement this year for the Hong Kong to Hainan Race with two trimarans racing to the finish; Karl Kwok’s MOD Beau Geste and Meitatsu Fukomoto / Seng Huang Lee’s SHK Scallywag Fuku. Sadly only a matter of hours into the Race, Scallywag was forced to retire after she hit something and one of her foils fell off. Scallywag and everyone on board returned safely to Hong Kong. Beau Geste finished after 24h 1m 59s; missing the current (albeit monohull) record time by 30m 7s but nonetheless set the first multihull record for the Hong Kong to Hainan Race.

later on 18 November we have Hong Kong’s biggest sailing event – the Turkish Airlines Around the Island Race. As ever, let’s cross our fingers that we will have the brilliant weather conditions we enjoyed at the China Coast Regatta; allowing everyone to sail the full circumnavigation of Hong Kong Island. It’s always such a sight to see our glorious Victoria Harbour brimming with sails so if you are not sailing yourself, do come down for breakfast that morning – you will not be disappointed! This time of year always seems to pass more quickly. 2019 is just around the corner with two more months to go and our brand new offshore race, the 1st edition of the Hong Kong to Puerto Galera Yacht Race starting on 16 and 17 April, will be in our sights. This is a classic 650nm passage to Puerto Galera, Philippines and already we have great interest in this new race. If this is not yet on your radar, it is now! November is an extremely busy month for the Club’s Rowing and Paddle Sports Section. The month starts with the outrigger canoe edition of the Around the Island Race that will be held on 4 November from Middle Island. This is followed by the Club’s outrigger team heading to compete in the Singapore Ocean Cup and the Club’s Youth Rowing Squad competing in the Hong Kong Schools Rowing Championships on the weekend of 17 and 18 November. Then to finish off the month, we are hosting two coastal rowing events at Kellett Island. As you might already know, the Club is an official venue partner for the Asian Rowing Coastal Championships that will take place from 23 to 25 November. This event will be followed by the coastal rowing edition of the Around the Island Race on Saturday 2 December.

Early this month we have the Buy Association Lipton Trophy – the first pursuit race of the Top Dog Trophy Series. That is on 3 November and

I would like to wish all Club members competing in this month’s events the very best of luck!

General Manager’s Message I do hate to say it when it is only November, but Christmas is only a matter of weeks away, and the team here at the Club have been planning your Christmas and New Year Programme for months already. Enclosed with this copy of Ahoy! is the Club’s festive season brochure, so make yourself a nice cup of tea or coffee and start planning which events you would like to attend. There are an abundance of events to sign up for and it’s all the more special given the development on the west side of the Club will have been completed. Bookings open on Monday 5 November so make sure to book early to avoid disappointment. Personally I’m looking forwards to the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony right in front of our fabulous new main entrance on 1 December, and of course that venue will also play host to the traditional Christmas Carols on Christmas Eve.

LAST CHANCE FOR TICKETS

On the charity side of things, the RHKYC Charity Foundation will again be hosting the Red Cross Hospital Schools for our annual Christmas party. Now, whilst arrangements for that event are all in hand, we do need your assistance with another of our annual charity initiatives – our charity toy collection. If you can, it would be fantastic if you could leave a wrapped present in reception before 7 December and label it so we know whether it is suitable for a boy or girl and what age range suits best. This is an initiative that we have been doing for many years and really helps make Christmas very special for so many young people less fortunate than ourselves, and so we thank you in advance for your support and generosity again this year.

The Bridge

It’s been an incredibly busy month both on and off the water. In addition to a fantastically successful China Coast Regatta and the rearranged Hong Kong Coastal Rowing Championships, we also opened the first part of the final stage of the Kellett Island Development known as the Regatta Room. Already we have seen a steady flow of Club and member events taking place in the new facility. A couple of weeks General Manager Mark Bovaird later, we opened the new roof 總經理布馬克 terrace, with its first event being a wedding ceremony with the Hong Kong skyline as the backdrop. This was followed a short time later by members and guests enjoying our Oktoberfest celebrations up there. The Regatta Room is also the venue for our new Dim Sum Brunch on Sundays and so far everyone has given us overwhelmingly positive feedback for this new dining option at the Clubhouse. At the time of writing, we are very much looking forward to the opening of Reception, the new Membership and F&B/Banquet offices as well as of course the expanded Bistro and Bistro Terrace in time for the Regatta Ball on 10 November. Talking of which, this year’s Regatta Ball is going to be bigger and better than ever and a full report will appear in a future edition of Ahoy!

Superb conditions, a north-easterly breeze of 15 to 25kts and no typhoons for the 26th anniversary of the China Coast Regatta! 34 yachts competed over the three-day event held from 12 to 14 October, with the HKPN Monohull joining for the Saturday and Sunday. Racing took place in the waters to the east and south of Hong Kong Island, with some islands courses extending into the waters east of Sai Kung. DAY 1

IRC Racer 1, the sole female skipper – Tiffany Koo – took the win in Race 1 on the King Mills 40, Hero Racing Team.

There were perfect conditions across the race track for Day 1 of the regatta with blue skies and a 10 to 15kts north-easterly breeze. 28 boats took to the race track, which was located southeast of Lamma Island. All IRC Racing divisions sailed one windward / leeward and an islands course, with the IRC Premier Cruising sailing a single island course.

For Race 2, sailors were sent on 19 to 32nm course depending on their division. Given the wind direction, sending yachts from Yuen Kok in the direction of the Ninepin Islands made for a giant windward / leeward with a few obstacles in the way – islands!

The first race of the day saw many competitors get a feel for the conditions, with sailors tightening up their drops by the end of the race. In the biggest racing fleet of the regatta

Adding excitement to the race course; Meitatsu Fukumoto / Seng Huang Lee’s ORMA 60 SHK Scallywag FUKU accelerated around the track while reaching top speeds of 39.7kts. Sadly

her match racing competition, trimaran Karl Kwok’s MOD Beau Geste 70, could not make the regatta due to electronics repairs. DAY 2 The breeze picked up for Day 2. A 20 to 25kts northeasterly breeze greeted the sailors as they reached the race track, which was located once again to the southeast of Lamma Island. The IRC Racer classes sailed three windward / leewards and had four retirements in the first race, which looked to mostly be spinnaker-related issues. IRC Premier Cruiser sailed two islands courses, and HKPN

managed to finish the race with other boats still in sight. What do we think of our clean sweep otherwise? Well, it’s a bit of a surprise, that’s what I am thinking! The boat’s going really well, and these weather conditions are perfect for Blackjack, 15kts and with the refit, I did this year it’s made the boat go a little bit faster, it’s going really well.”

were given one windward / leeward and an island course. As the day progressed the breeze moderated to around 15kts and the sunshine came out making for the best sailing conditions Hong Kong has to offer. Continuing an excellent streak from Day 1 was Sam Chan’s TP52 FreeFire. On the pontoon after racing Sam said, “Our day was very good we got 2 -1 -1. In the first race, we were not doing too well, but we managed to take line honours, we beat Frank Pong’s Custom 75 Jelik on the water. We either got line honours, or we got first. How did the crew perform? I think I’m happy with them; they can’t be better. In five races, we’ve won four already.” In IRC Racer 2 Glenn Smith’s Grand Soleil 45 Blackjack had a disappointing first race of the day when they badly wrapped the kite at the bottom mark. They were able to claw back with two firsts in the final races of the day, giving them four bullets in the regatta so far. Putting Blackjack tied for first place overall at 11 points with Richard Van Den Berg’s J 111 Juggerknot. NOVEMBER 2018 AHOY! |

Glenn Smith commented, “Well, in the first race we were coming down very fast to the jibe, we were using our heavy asymmetric, which we haven’t used for a while. When we did the jibe, I think we hit a wave and it sort of spun the asymmetric around the forestay and then we kept wrapping it around and I think that delayed us 15 minutes. We dropped it and

DAY 3

Feature | China Coast Regatta

Another superb day of excellent conditions; 15kts, sunshine and blue skies for the final races of the regatta. Racing got away smoothly with all IRC Racer and HKPN divisions sailing one windward / leeward and one islands course ranging in distance from 10 to 16.5nm. The islands course took the fleet on a beat towards a windward mark and reaching to an ocean mark before rounding Beaufort or Sung Kong and finishing off Bluff Head near Stanley. After the first windward/leeward, FreeFire came out on top of the IRC Racer 0 division, putting herself 8 points ahead and untouchable to Shawn Kang’s Ker 46+ Lighthorse Alpha Plus. After narrowly missing out in China Coast Regatta in 2017 when their tuff luff ripped out of the jib in the final race of the regatta, Hero Racing Team persevered and took the IRC Racer 1 win. Tiffany almost had a clean sweep across the board and was thwarted by Fred Kinmonth and Nick Burns’ Mandrake III which took the win in the final islands race of the regatta. In IRC Racer 2 Blackjack took the win in her division ahead of Juggerknot. They were followed by Joshua Cole’s A40RC Avante Garde who tied with Blackjack on corrected time in the final race of the regatta. In IRC Racer 3, Lowell Chang’s AC35 Dexter II took the win in her division – five points ahead of Nick Southward’s J/109 Whiskey Jack. IRC Premier Cruising sailed two 10nm island courses which took them around Beaufort Island. Their second race of the day was started to the south of Stanley, for which they had a downwind start. Peter Churchouse’s Warwick Custom Moonblue 2 came out on top with a clean sweep across the board for the second year running. Joining racing for the weekend, was Alan Cheung’s Oceanis 34 Bleu, took the win in the HKPN division after taking two bullets on Sunday. With all the racing wrapped up, the fleets made their way back to Middle Island for refreshments on the hardstand with the overall prizegiving held in the Regatta Room on Tuesday 16 October at Kellett Island. See you next year for China Coast Regatta 2019 to be held from 11 to 13 October, followed by the Hong Kong to Vietnam Race starting 16 October 2019.

Race Management Going Digital

In 2013, Hong Kong Race Week had 103 sailors on the water and two race areas. By 2018, Hong Kong Race Week had 244 participants racing in four different race areas. Besides the growth in numbers, also the ages of the participants have changed – now very young sailors participate in the Optimist Green Fleet. The exponential growth in participants and the spread of the sailors over the different race areas was an important driver for race management to evaluate the existing safety systems in place for the dinghy regattas in Hong Kong.

Sailing

Digital devices have become an increasingly important part of our young sailors’ lives. Race management, with safety as the number one priority, has caught up with this trend by replacing the paper-based safety systems of old with an electronic one, to help keep our young competitors safe.

3 The personalized wristband is scanned with a mobile device at the launch area for a safety check-out and check-in of the competitors. The scans are fed into a central system that gives the race committee a live overview of which sailors are on the water.

In 2013, we tracked competitors on and off the water by requiring sailors to come to the race office desk to sign-on and sign-off the water on a big paper sheet. Too often, sailors would try to sign for their friends, or the sign-on/off paper sheets got too wet to be legible. Late in 2017, we started to look into a digital safety system called “Sailing. Today”. The main objectives were to find a system that would give a live overview of which sailors are afloat and permit safety management direct access to their personal details while on the water, so that we could ensure a quick and precise response in case of an emergency. So far, three big dinghy events have used our new safety system “Sailing. Today” – the 2017 IODA Optimist Asian & Oceanian Championship, the 2017 Zhik 29er Worlds and Hong Kong Race Week 2018.

So how does it work? 1 During registration, each sailor checks if their data (Name, Sail Number, Date of Birth, Emergency Contact, Medical Info, etc.) are correct. 4 When a sailor needs to be rescued on the water, the race committee can scan the wristband to know directly who the sailor is and whom to contact.

2 After confirmation, the sailors, both helm and crew, receive a personalized RFID band that they attach to their buoyancy aid or around their wrist at all times during the regatta.

Moving away from paper solutions by using the advantages of modern technology not only enhances safety and the insight that it gives race management, it also is in line with the RHKYC’s sustainability vision and principles by reducing paper waste. So far, the reactions have been very positive from the sailors and race/safety management teams. This is however, only the beginning of our digital journey. The next step is to provide live information to the sailors’ supporters ashore. We are looking at sending out emails to the parents when their child comes ashore, to publish the results after each race and send out notifications on their mobile devices, to have sailors maintain their data on a single platform from which they can register directly to any regatta anywhere in the world… NOVEMBER 2018 AHOY! |

Turkish Airlines Around The Island Race

Hong Kong to Puerto Galera Race

Saturday 19 January will see the second pursuit race of the Top Dog Series, the HKRNVR Memorial Vase. The trophy was presented to the Club in 1950 by officers of the HKRNVR and HKNVF in memory of their comrades who fell in the battle for Hong Kong from 1941 to 1950 with the proviso that “the course should take participating yachts into waters patrolled by the HKRNVR”. The HKRNVR is now defunct but the trophy continues to serve as a reminder of when amateur sailors played their part in the security of Hong Kong. Nowadays the course takes the fleet out through the harbour to the Eastern approaches and back and the HKRNVR Memorial Vase will be presented to the first boat that finishes. Notice of Race and online entry are available from the club’s website.

The Notice of Race and online entry for the inaugural Hong Kong to Puerto Galera Race is now available. The main race fleet will start on 17 April 2019 – with IRC Racer 3 / IRC Cruiser and HKPN boats starting on 16 April – for an anticipated finish together with the main race fleet. The race will be the second longest Category 1 offshore race in Asia and will take competitors on a 650nm passage to Puerto Galera, on the island of Mindoro in the Philippines. For the first time in recent years yachts will be allowed to enter a motoring division within the race.

The race is supported by the Puerto Galera Yacht Club, situated within one the world’s rarest and most beautiful, natural typhoon shelters, and recognised as a hub for all cruising routes in and out of the West Pacific. Puerto Galera’s surrounding beaches and coves offer all the activities and facilities that one could wish for in a tropical paradise: scuba diving, snorkelling, golf, kayaking, hiking, swimming, tennis, bars, music and restaurants. Please note that Puerto Galera is a very popular tourist destination over Easter so it is very important for skippers and crew to book accommodation as early as possible. rom the 4 to the 10 August, 11 sharks sailors competed in the British national and open championship 2018 in Pwllheli, Wales. We had all arrived in Pwllheli a week before the start of the events to have a fruitful week of training with our coach Christos Atzemian. During this week, we were able to train in every condition with the wind ranging from 2 to 30 knots. After finishing registration and the opening ceremony, we started the regatta on Sunday (5 August). The regatta consisted in a 5-day event separated in the qualifying series for the first 3 days and the final series for the last 2 days with a lay day between them. The qualifying series started and we were all really excited to finally race, but unfortunately

20

| NOVEMBER 2018 AHOY!

the breeze was really light and we were not able to finish a single race on the first day. Luckily the wind was much better the following two days and we were able to finish the qualifying series on time. During the lay day, we all took a well needed rest and enjoyed some typical welsh activity: go karting! Finally we arrived to the final sprint of the regatta, the finals series, where all the game is on. The races took place in some breeze averaging 11 knots, which most of our sailors were quite happy with. After five races, we finished this amazing regatta full of experience for future events. I would finally like to thank a lot the RHKYC for their support during this regatta and our coach Christos Atzemian who did again an amazing job.

he Hong Kong team arrived in Limassol, Cyprus on the 19 August. The first few days before the regatta where to get on the water and discover the conditions as well as train with other teams such as Greece and Israel to warm up after a long summer for some and a break after the British Nationals for others.

SHARKS TEAM Duncan Gregor Douglas Leung Eloi Defline Oriane Voets COACH Christos Atzemian

The regatta started on the 22 August after 3 days on the water. The first two days were qualification and the last two finals dividing the two fleets into gold and silver. The conditions for the first day were good with a steady sea breeze filling early. This made it possible to complete the three races expected for the day. After a long day with a few misscorings and plenty of races, we went back to the hotel for some rest and to recover for the second day of qualifications. The second day was like the first with sea breeze filling in early and three scheduled races were completed allowing the qualifications to end with enough races and the finals to start with one discard. The first day of finals was a bit different concerning the wind, the sea breeze came later in the afternoon resulting in us staying longer on the water but the breeze was stronger than the previous days. We got off the water later knowing that next day would be an earlier start because it was the last day and there was a time limit. On the final day of racing, the sea breeze came in a lot earlier allowing us to complete the last three races of the event. This event was a great experience for all of us and a great training for the world championship coming the next week. We got to get a first taste of racing against the other sailors from around the world and getting back into the racing spirit and mindset. I would like to thank Christos for coaching us.

Gus and Jonathan caught an unluckily timed crab in the closing stages in their repechage race to narrowly place third, counting them out of an opportunity in the semi finals. Justin and Nick also had a combination of fatigue and malfunctioning parts on their borrowed boat. In the repechage of the senior high school quads, the size and strength of the opposition showed and despite racing to their maximum, the boys did not make it through to the semi finals.

A

fter arriving at the hotel on Friday night, we tried our best to eat a restaurant out of Sushi in preparation for a busy day of racing. Having been asked to arrive at the boathouse at 0600hrs to rig the boats, we arose at 5:15 (4:15 HK time, ouch) and made our way to the train station to catch an early train to Kyoto University Rowing Club boathouse. Arriving on time, we found all of the boats already rigged, so raided a 7-11 for breakfast. The first two crews boated at 8am in preparation for the 9am race, only to find that the timetable that had been translated for us had changed and racing in fact began half an hour earlier. Unfortunately, David and James, who were meant to be the first race, missed their start time. The quad of Ollie, Sam,

22

Amos and Otto made a later starting race and won convincingly. Later, the senior high school quad of James, David, Nick and Justin came 5th in their heat to get through to the repechage (a second chance race to get into the semi final). Next came the doubles. Otto and Amos, Oliver and Sam both made it through to the final of their event later in the day.

In the finals of the junior high quads, after leading for the first quarter of the race, a gate broke and left the boat to limp home, one rower down. A real shame as they had showed such form in the first round and were leading at the time of the incident.

THE TEAM Leah Gilette James Coward David Kim Jonathan Gu Gus Falloon Oliver Blyth Nick Chan Amos Ching Justin Yiu Sam Wong Otto Surman

In junior high doubles, Oliver and Sam came away with a bronze medal, closely followed by Otto and Amos. On Sunday, our sole representative Leah raced very hard against opposition much older than herself, placing a well earned second plane, a medal and a certificate of achievement.

Justin and Nick, Gus and Jonathan both fought close races also made it through to the repechage of the senior high school doubles.

All in all, a great days racing. A ceremony and press call for Ollie and Sam topped the day off for them.

Second Round Races Leah rowed really well in tricky conditions and against some very strong competition to place 6th in her single, within the main pack of the race.

I know there was some frustration and disappointment amongst the group, but that is racing, and the experience gained here will be there to be drawn on in future. I couldn’t be prouder of everyone.

RHKYC takes on the Pailolo Challenge 2018 W O RD S: JEREM Y YO UN G | PH OTO S: PAILO LO C RE W

OUTRIGGER CONTACT outrigger@rhkyc.org.hk

oes paddling for 42 kms in 20 knot winds and 4 metre swells sound crazy? Well for 6 of our most experienced paddlers this is exactly what they did in the Pailolo Challenge 2018 – and came home with a gold medal in their division for their efforts! In the outrigger section, overseas racing is an aspiration and goal for most paddlers. As part of that, for most of us going to Hawaii the home of Wa’a paddling is the ultimate experience. There are many races in Hawaii, however a few are bucket list races and the Pailolo Challenge is one of those. A 42km kilometre race that takes you from the Island of Maui across the Pailolo channel to the Island of Molokai (Pailolo in Hawaiian means ‘crazy fisherman’ referring to any fisherman who would be crazy enough to cross the channel)

the race. The biggest challenge was going to be racing in conditions that we don’t get in Hong Kong – strong wind and big swells. With registration and accommodation sorted, we needed to find a boat for the race. Fortunately our friend Cameron Jacombe owner and shaper of Palafamala Custom Paddles helped us find an Ultralight Canoe the same as we have at the club through Jamie Balingit with Ali’i Maui Outrigger Canoes which was fantastic. We arrived into Hawaii following hurricane Olivia meaning conditions were going to be challenging, and with only one chance to test the boat, race day arrived and after a traditional opening ceremony it was time to go. Getting off the beach through the surf to the start line was the first challenge and a good prep for what was to come. Right from the start the conditions were challenging, however as we got used to them and became more comfortable we managed them better. As the course continued, the swell goes from being diagonal to more directly behind, making it less challenging to catch them and get ‘sleigh rides’ as the surf pushed us along. The next 3:28 is a blur of fucus and managing the conditions –working as a team and getting better as we paddled towards the finish.

It started in April over a post training conversation when we conceived the idea to go as a team and take on the Pailolo Challenge. From this a squad of interested paddlers was established.

The after race function was Hawaiian style ‘Huli huli chicken’ with all teams socialising and sharing stories from the race.

The race has a few options; ‘change’ (similar to Around the Island Race) or ‘Iron’ (one crew does the whole distance) – standard boat (400lbs) or Ultralight (any weight). With various training vs travel and personal commitments in the build up to the race, the crew narrowed down to become an Iron crew of 6 with significant experience between them.

Without any context to how we had done and being happy we’d finished, it was a great surprise to hear “…and 1st Mens over 40 Iron is RHKYC Renegades”

There were some key aspects needed to be coordinated – Training, registration, accommodation, boat hire, race logistics. The Outrigger section Coach Anna Mathisen worked with John McLennan and Jeremy Young to establish a 3.5 month training program to build up physical fitness and body endurance to ensure we avoided injury and were in the right condition for the race. A schedule was developed that took into account the teams travel and after just over 100 hours and 1,000 kms the team was in the best shape they could be for

PADDLERS (in seat order) Jeremy Young Zach Tuckwell David Bulbeck Julien Stump John McLennan Doug Woodring RESULT 1st – Mens 40+ Iron Unlimited

However we only got to enjoy that for a short while before it was time to catch the ferry back – going against the huge swells that we’d just been catching which was more challenging than the paddle race. The Pailolo Challenge was a great experience for all of us – from the training through to the race and the journey back. Thanks to all who supported us through the training and helping fill seats We will definitely be back to do it again and hopefully with additional crews from RHKYC Outrigger NOVEMBER 2018 AHOY! |

The promotion and awareness of the environmental conservation is a key objective and could be supported thanks a partnership with students from all Discovery bay schools. Indeed plastic pollution is an issue in Hong Kong and improvements can be implemented partly through the education of the young generation. Some of the pupils welcomed the paddlers at mid race on Fan Lau Beach. They were also lucky to have the beautiful surprise to spot a few pink dolphins passing through. RHKYC, which was represented by 11 of its outrigger canoe members and four rowers, was proud to support this event as social responsibility is a key value to the club. We are looking forward to the next year session and be able to complete the full tour of the island.

Typhoon Mangkhut

Middle Island moorings and hard standing were particularly badly affected by the storm as can be seen in the photographs below.

Regretfully we lost five craft from our moorings. The cause of this was either the mooring ropes chaffing through or, in three cases, the stainless steel swivel breaking. The Club moorings did not have any problems during the storm except in Aberdeen where the several of the moorings at the sea wall moved. Members who fit swivels to their moorings should use caution and check them regularly. Stainless steel is not so strong as galvanised steel and is subject to work hardening and cracking, leading to failure as can be seen from the picture below. This is often not easily visible and members are advised, if they wish to fit a swivel on their mooring bridle, to change this yearly. Swivels should have a working load of 9000 kg. and shackles should be good quality galvanised iron, not stainless steel.

As can be seen from the picture above two sailing boats have been laid over on their beam ends with the gust that blew through the gap from Repulse Bay. The second picture below shows an earlier gust affecting all the boats on the moorings.

Middle Island hard standing was badly affected by the swell caused by the typhoon. Although the wind was blowing in through the Repulse Bay gap the swell waves were entering Deep Water bay from the West, curling around Middle Island, and running parallel to the island with a lag where the swell was breaking against the island and the hard standing sea wall.

Mooring ropes should have chaff protection where they pass through fairleads or over anchor rollers. However these do not last forever and should be checked on a regular basis. In the picture below it can be seen that the right hand mooring rope has chaffed through just at the end of the plastic chaff protection. It can be seen by the colour of the plastic that it has deteriorated over the years and is no longer supple where it turned around the fairlead, allowing the mooring rope to chaff through.

The picture below shows clearly the swell coming from the opposite direction of the wind, breaking against the sea wall and flooding the hard standing.

When fitting chaff protection to a mooring bridle members should ensure that the protection cannot slip down the rope leaving the rope to chaff as in the picture above. Fitting an extra mooring rope is always a good idea prior to the onset of a typhoon. However this should be fitted to the main mooring chain and not to a shackle or swivel that the main mooring lines are attached to. In the picture below the swivel broke and the mooring ropes and extra line were both attached to the swivel causing the craft to break adrift when the swivel broke. NOVEMBER 2018 AHOY! |

ots of firsts and superlatives are being discussed regarding typhoon Mangkhut but I will not address these here. Lets instead look at how the typhoon affected members vessels and the Clubs moorings and equipment.

Marine The arrow shows the broken swivel to which the mooring ropes and the extra mooring rope were attached. By far the largest problem in this and many other typhoons was Genoa’s unfurling and Biminis’s ripping. I cannot stress too much canvas work, which includes main sails, Genoa’s, Biminis’s and awnings are not covered by insurance during strong winds. Genoa’s flogging in the wind are a danger to other vessels and the pontoons if the craft is berthed alongside. Genoa’s flogging in the wind put a lot more stress on mooring lines that normal which can result in the craft breaking loose from the mooring or striking the fendering on the pontoon, resulting in damage to the pontoon and the vessel’s topsides. If a Genoa un-furl’s and flogs so much that the rigging fails and the mast falls down the insurance will very rarely pay out. The worst case scenario is when the mast falls over, punches a hole in the side of the sailing boat and the boat sinks!

When a vessel is alongside in the marina correct mooring lines should be used. Brained line is not suitable as it has no stretch. Braid is great for halyards and sheets but not for mooring line. Three strand nylon rope is the best type of rope to use as it stretches and relieves strain on the cleats on board the craft and on the pontoon. Mooring lines should not be tied short, or directly down to cleats. This will put too much strain on the cleat as is shown in the photograph below where the short lengthy of the mooring rope, coupled with it not having any stretch, as it is braided rope, has pulled the cleat out of the pontoon.

Finally please see the reminder below from Expat Marine insurance brokers. Please remember that the golden rule of insurance is to ‘act as a prudent uninsured’ and if it is found that an owner has not done this problems can occur in making a claim. We would highly recommend checking that all mooring lines are in good condition, additional mooring lines are used and additional fenders are in place and securely tied on. All canvas / sails and any loose objects should be removed from above deck – remember no insurance policy provides cover for canvas / sails if split by the wind and this includes periods when the yacht is not underway. In strong winds objects tend to fly off yachts and can damage other property. Insurers may likely question any liability claim made if you have left items above deck that can be taken by the wind.

Michelin Chef Series: Part VI Luigi Nastri and Italian Wine Dinner Compass Room | Thursday 29 November|

Vesevo is the ancient name of the famed volcano Mt. Vesuvius, in whose shadow sit the vineyards. Vesevo vineyards enjoy the rich volcanic soils which impart mineral nuances to the wines which are crafted by a team headed by internationally known Tuscan winemaker, Alberto Antonini. The Zeni winery’s philosophy lived by innovator Nino Zeni, is now caught up by current managing board with Fausto, Elena and Federica Zeni. The continuous improvement both in the production processes and in the winery’s management made the winery fully eligible to obtain the UNI EN ISO 9001: 2000 quality certification. Italian Michelin-starred Chef Luigi Nastri is a minimalist. Trained in his parents’ cooking school on the Amalfi coast, he has combined the classic Mediterranean setting, with an international influence derived from numerous journeys between Japan, Northern Europe and the United States. The result is a personal cuisine; rooted in family lunches with its rich olfactory load; and starting from here, experiments with techniques, cooking and combinations. Nastri’s professional growth culminated in 2016 with the arrival in Rome at La Stazione di Posta, and his first Michelin star.

Farewell Our General Manager, Mark Bovaird presented farewell gifts to Hui Yuk Lin, Amah (25 years’ service) and Ho Chi Ming, Carpenter (12 years’ service) who retired on 28 August and 4 September 2018 respectively.

Charity Activity Jacco Klip, Club Operations Manager and members of Staff Activities Committee met with the retired seafarers from the Mariners Club at the time of the Mid-Autumn Festival in September 2018. You will see from the pictures that they are still fit and full of energy. During our short gathering, they shared a lot of their past experience. We all enjoyed the time together. At the end, each of them was greeted with a piece of moon cake from the Club.
