Hello and welcome to Desertmartin, round 4 of the 2015 Thor British Youth Nationals. It’s been a long time coming but we are finally here at Desertmartin, one of the finest motocross circuits in the world. Round 4 of the Thor British Youth Nationals is set to be without doubt one of the best rounds of this years championship, all titles are still up for grabs in every class which shows just how well you guys are racing this year - awesome stuff from everyone. The former sandpit known as “Porter’s Pit” is owned by the Porter family but is leased by the Cookstown Club who have developed it into one of the best known motocross tracks in the world, and one of the few with full planning permission. The “Desert”, as it’s fondly known, has been developed over the years with not just the riders in mind but also provides for the spectators. Walkways and spectator areas are plentiful with a large hardcore paddock area for the riders to park and work on their machines. Toilet facilities are good, and on race days catering is always provided. Part of our priority here at RHL Activities is to encourage new riders into our championship, and this year we have nearly 40% of riders who are racing here today for the first time at British Championship level, we welcome you guys with open arms and the same for the established riders who have experienced the excitement of the series over the last few seasons. Since our very first British Youth National in 2012 the growth for the championship is very impressive, we have grown over 300% with registered riders and I would like to thank each and everyone of you for your amazing support - and we will continue to grow. Lets hope its a great weekend for all, and I hope you enjoy your time with us at Desertmartin. SEE YOU ON THE START LINE

IT’S TIGHT AT THE TOP..

...AS PONTRILAS PRODUCED AN EPIC WEEKEND IN HEREFORD

Round three of this year’s Thor British Youth nationals took the best of the country’s young motocross riders to Pontrilas just a half miles from the Welsh border in south Herefordshire, where the changeable weather conditions tested them to the extreme. Loads of rain on Friday and most of the night changed the natural hillside track into a slippery mess with even walking round the paddock was default. But by just after lunch the rain stopped and the track dried out very quickly and racing was on for the weekend with even some dust making an appearance late on Sunday.

Jordan Eccles (DRF Husqvarna) was the man to beat in the open class as he won five out of his six races with only a simple mistake in race two, when the track was at it’s most treacherous dropped him down to fourth place. That’s not to say Eccles had it all his own way for in race one he was pushed all the way by Luke Smith (Harris KTM), who didn’t finish out of the top three all weekend, and crossed the finish line just over four seconds clear. George Grigg-Pettitt (Aim KTM) seemed to revel in the muddy conditions on Saturday as he won race two while Eccles played catch up and also notched up a second and a third, but failed to reach the top three on the dryer Sunday.

6

Eccles passed the fast starting Robbie Dawson (Eurotech KTM) at the halfway stage in race three for his race three win almost eight seconds clear of GriggPettitt and Smith as Dawson hung on for fourth place. It was a start to finish win for Eccles in race four, the first on Sunday with Dowson, Smith and Grigg-Pettitt crossing the finish line some ten seconds behind him. While Eccles and Dowson spent all of race five in first and second the interest in the race came from the battle between Smith and Grigg-Pettitt for third as the two fast racers changed place loads of time till at about the halfway stage Grigg-Pettitt made a mistake with in third and let Smith pass him with Joe Hodgson (G Force KTM) following Smith through to fourth place. By the time Grigg-Pettitt had re-grouped the others were long gone and he had to settle for fifth place. Dowson gated second to Eccles in the sixth and final open class race of the weekend and put him under pressure for the first four laps and the passed him for the lead with just three laps to go, but a crash on the last lap let Eccles through for his fifth win of the weekend with Smith taking second and the luckless Dawson third. Overall it was Eccles form Smith, Grigg-Pettitt, Dowson with Hodgson fifth, but in the championship Eccles now holds a fifty seven-point lead over Smith, Grigg-Pettitt and Dowson. Riders who took part in the 125cc race put on some of the best racing we’ve witnessed this year, the quality of racing was bang on. Three wins and three second places for Alexander Brown (KTM) won the overall from Oliver Benton (Hitachi KTM) and Callum Green (Husqvarna). In race one Green stormed into the lead and was never really challenged as Joe Cadwallader was caught and passed by Brown on his way to second place with

Benton making things hard for himself by having to come from eighth place at the start to third place. Benton made up for his bad start in race one by getting the holeshot and going onto win in race two as Brown spent all race in second place with Green having to pass Dee-Jay Walker on the opening lap to get third. Brown lead race three from start to finish and was followed home by Benton and Green with the same happening in race four. Benton turned the table on Brown in race five with Walker third, but in the last race Walker got his best result of the weekend by following race winner Brown over the finish line, with Green third. Brown now extends his lead in the championship to forty-two from Benton with Green and Walker filling the next two places. The big wheel 85’s is always good value and this weekend was no different with four different race winners in the six races and just twenty seven points separating the top six riders which is nothing at all considering they get sixty points for a win. And with several of the fancied riders failing to really get to gips with the changing conditions the class was well shaken up. Chris Mills (Power Band KTM) was making his first appearance in the series won race one and three and by backing those wins up with four second places he won the overall by a convincing margin. But consistency pays as second and third overall was Harry Kimber (Hardcore Husqvarna) and Callum Gasson (TM UK) who were separated by just two points at the end of the weekend and neither came away with a race win. Race two winner Daniel Bewley (Horsman KTM) was fourth overall just a single point behind Gasson, a bad start in race four spoiling his chance of a higher place finish against the tough field of riders.

“RIDERS WHO TOOK PART IN THE 125CC RACE PUT ON SOME OF THE BEST RACING WE’VE WITNESSED THIS YEAR, THE QUALITY OF RACING WAS BANG ON.”

Full results from Round 3 can be found HERE Round 4 of the 2015 Thor British Youth Nationals will take place on 25/26 July at Desertmartin, Ireland. Places are still available for round 4, to book in and register please call Penny on 01873 840640 or email penny@rhlactivities.com

2015

Two points behind Bewley was Dominic Lancett (Hardcore Husqvarna) who won race four with race five and six winner Jed Etchells (Team Green Kawasaki) a single point behind him as bad start in race one spoiling his weekend almost before it had begun. Kimber has a seven-point lead over Grimshaw with Dylan Woodcock (Team Green Kawasaki) third after a disappointing weekends results, by his standards. With four race wins, a second and a fourth place Eddie Wade (Husqvarna) was the lad to beat in the small wheel 85’s as Kacey Hird (Craigs KTM) struggled in race one, finishing sixth, but finished the rest of his races in the top three and winning race five on his way to second overall. Third overall and race three winner Lewis Hall (Team Green Kawasaki) didn’t have the weekend he was looking for as he failed to get going in the first race of the weekend and a crash out of third place on lap two of race four saw the young rider re-mount and restart his machine in fifteenth place and still managed to get back up to eighth place before the end of the race. Ike Carter (MBO Power KTM) was fourth overall and mastered the slippery condition of the earlier races with Joel Rizzi (Team Green Kawasaki) fifth and Sam Nunn (GMX KTM) sixth overall. Hird now has a slim five-point lead over Wade in the championship from Nunn and Hall. With five wins from six starts Vinnie Guthrie (Portland Husqvarna)) won the junior’s in great style as he mastered the changeable conditions over the weekend, with Alfie Jones (Skye KTM) scoring good points in all his races second place and Morgan Evans (Rikki Priest KTM) third. In the Junior championship Guthrie extended his lead over Jones, with Hayman third and Evans fourth.
