IT’S A MUDDER IN THE DESERT Who would have Adam and Eve’d it? The final Supercross race of the year in Las Vegas gets hit by torrential rain and ends up a mudder - incredible. After 17 amazing rounds of Supercross racing all the champions were crowned, Ryan Dungey taking the 450 class, Cooper Webb the 250 West Coast title and Malcolm Stewart the East Coast. His post race interview was just awesome thanking his big brother James for pushing him to succeed, “That was crazy right there, what a race,” exclaimed Stewart. “Everything I’ve gone through with myself and James this year, it’s been an up and down season for both of us. I feel like I owe half of this [championship] to him. I’m just speechless right now. All I know is I have this number one plate right now and I want to cry.”

CAIROLI IS BACK BUT DID HE ACTUALLY GO AWAY?

/08/

After Tony Carioli’s double race victory in Germany recently the world went bonkers and started to post “Cairoli is back” on their social media sites. The big question is, did he ever go away? Of course he didn’t, TC222 is a canny rider and as the old saying goes, consistency will win you titles, add a few race wins and by the end of 2016, Tony could be a 9 time world champion. But we do have 2 riders who will be doing their best for it not to happen, current MXGP champion Romain Febvre and rookie (dislike that term a lot) Tim Gajser. Just look at this awesome picture, if you were a betting man who would you have your money on?

I was third and was battling hard with Harry Kimber and Slade Tressler and then Harry crashed right in front of me on the landing of and jump there was nothing I could do it was just a racing incident, which led to me dislocating my shoulder, 1 hour and a half it took them to get it back in, but the hospital was great with me, the day after I had it lasered and had physio that whole week, if it wasn’t for Aidan Robinson and Robbie and everyone at ITRM I probably would still be in a sling.”

Callum, absolute nightmare at Brampton for you considering your early season form, tell us what happened and how are things progressing? “Well at Brampton things didn’t go to plan all weekend to be honest and I qualified second which I wasn’t mad with but wasn’t pleased with either as I knew I could of gone faster. You race the 125 class in the BYN and the 250 in the MXY2, why is that? “I don’t think riding both bikes makes it confusing, I like it keeps me on my toes and it also makes my riding better and I think me racing in the MXY2 is good because the top 15 are all capable of winning, it’s so intense from start to finish which makes life easier on the 125.”

Tell us about your training as you train with a few road racers and your trainer is Kirk who trains Tommy Searle. “I’ve been hammering the training with Kirk Gibbons for a couple of months now and even though I dislocated my shoulder, I still went to the gym the same week and Kirk has really helped with my perpetration and focus towards the racing, he’s been a massive part in my motocross and we are building the shoulder back up to what it should be. It’s been really good I’ve been able to ride and I was back riding a week and a half later which I was amazed by. I couldn’t do it without everyone who supports me, I can’t thank everyone enough and I thank the whole team for sticking by me.”

//WHO DID WHAT?/

Thats it, done and dusted, yes the 2016 Monster Energy Supercross season is now over. Is it just me or did it fly by this year?

EDITOR Ray Chuss

A pretty awesome 17 rounds in my opinion with all 3 champions deserving their crowns and place in the history books, well done to those guys. But when are we going to see a combined 250 SX championship, has the time come to do this? The best of the best - I think the fans want it and I’m sure it would help generate hype and more importantly bums on seats.

GRAPHIC DESIGN Ryan Burisch HEALTH AND FITNESS Leah Preston

Last month Conrad Mewse had his first ever cover with us at ‘Live Motocross’ great start to the season, leading the EMX250 championship and an impressive ride in the Maxxis opener at Lyng, forward a month and he’s racing MX2 in the world championship with a 23rd in Latvia and a 27th in Germany - who made the decision for Conrad to drop a possible championship challenge in EMX250 with a ride in MX2?. In my humble opinion he’s just not quite ready yet. A season of impressive rides, enjoying his racing and feeling good about himself would have done him wonders - he’s 17 years old and he has years ahead of him in the sport, I genuinely feel gutted for him on a decision that just doesn’t sit right.

DIFFERENT

We’ve already touched on the fact that to have a mud race in May in Las Vegas is unheard of, we can’t even remember the last time this happened. It made for an interesting final event of the year, maybe spoiled what could have been something different, it’s in the history books now, I really can’t see this happening next year but then again Leicester City did win the Premiership.

/013/

OF THE BEST//

Quite possibly the funniest unintentional video this year. Cooper Webb being interviewed in obvious pain after winning his 250 West Coast title by Jim Holley was TV gold, it was slightly awkward for sure but at the end when Cooper said, “I’ve got to go” his mind was elsewhere. Probably to see the doctor if not partying in Las Vegas, the second option being way off the mark.

/014/

Monster Energy had the big guns out in Vegas, not the guys who were arm wrestling drunken rednecks all year but the best of the best of Monster Energy Girls. It doesn’t matter if you prefer blondes, brunettes or redheads, Monster had them all there. As my 10 year old nephew said, “Damn Dem Girls R hot” (he actually said that)

/015/

OF THE BEST//

/04 ...MAYBE NOT. Is this the final year we

see Chad Reed race the Monster Energy Supercross? He didn’t quite make the podium in Vegas but he did secure an impressive 5th place in the 450 championship. Chad now heads to Europe to race in Italy and the British GP at Matterley Basin, personally I think we will see one more season from Reed. Whatever his decision from now until whenever - he will go down as one of the all-time great riders in Supercross. /016/

Quite possibly the sexiest location on the MXGP circuit, the region of Patagonia in Argentina is super scenic with mountains and lakes surrounding the gorgeous looking track. Feedback from riders has been really positive with pretty much all saying they enjoy the event and the trip to South America. Lets hope and pray Mexico can follow suit, otherwise all the Argentine goodness is for zilch.

Ryan Dungey AKA Captain America has done it again, setting standards on and off the bike which currently others struggle to get anywhere near. Ryan swept away the Las Vegas mud and sludge of the final Supercross of the year and ripped to another title onboard his Factory Red Bull KTM, that’s two titles on the bounce and his 4th Supercross championship of his career. As you can see from the picture Ryan and KTM’s head Honcho Pit Beirer are loving it.

...the front of the bike, opposite to sand tracks. On hard pack tracks you want to lower the front of the bike so you can steer and cut up the inside of corners with more ease. This will help you look for better lines and have the possibility to cut inside a competitor to make a pass...

On the hard pack you need to be as smooth as possible rolling on the power looking for as much grip as you can. Rolling corner speed is hugely important. Being aggressive spinning the wheel and getting out of shape will loose you time and energy. Always important in any race but making up time on a hard pack track is even harder if you don’t get out of the gate. Keep your weight a little further forward on the bike before the gate drops and nail the reaction, look for the perfect amount of spin and go for the holeshot every time. The start is the only place on the track that you can pass everyone at the same time...

...Attack, Attack.... It’s easy when riding hard pack to relax more than you need to, it’s not as physically demanding as riding in the sand so there is always time to be saved. Look for spots of the track where you could brake later, Get on the power sooner or carry more corner speed through a fast sweeper.... You’ll be surprised by using these simple techniques you’ll easily find 1- 2secs per lap.

After what seems like years missing from a British Championship calendar, the Thor British Youth Nationals headed to Cumbria for round 2 of their championship. The track had a complete layout change due to the expanding quarry next door, having been there on many

occasions in the last 20 years, it was certainly an eye opener when driving into the paddock to see what changes have been made. The top part is now a quarry so everyone parked in the main paddock at the bottom end of the circuit which hasn’t changed that much, the track was near perfect even though over the two days of racing the guys at BYN experienced every weather condition the Lake

District could throw at them, including snow. What next? If all goes well over the next year we could see the main Maxxis British Championship return to one of the best circuits in the country, with a few changes to the track and parking areas, we could be heading back in 2017. Great venue and a great bunch of people at Cumbria Motocross Club who look after everything awesome work guys.

STRENGTHENING WITH

RESISTANCE

BANDS

In this article we focus on strengthening the shoulders, race season is well under way you may already be noticing those past injuries beginning to interfere with your riding ability by giving out free aches and pains.

There are many muscles involved in a functioning shoulder, the main one being the Deltoid but we are looking a little deeper in this article. When it comes to strengthening the shoulders it really is not rocket science and the benefit you gain will be highly noticeable whether you are or are not injury free.

FLYES (Anterior Deltoid and Pectoralis) ** These are the ones we are using for the magazine, this one is me facing the camera. Ensure the band is securely attached to a stable object. Take a good grip of the band in each hand, make sure those elbows have a soft bend and take them to a start position where they are in line with the shoulders to the side of the body. Using then just the movement of the shoulders pull both arms forward so they are pointing directly ahead. Slowly release back to the side and repeat.

/036/

REVERSE FLYES (Posterior Deltoid, Rhomboids and Upper Back Muscles) Attach the band securely with this especially as if the band comes loose then it will only be travelling in one direction‌towards you! Take the arms out straight in front of the body with a soft bend in the elbows, lock the arms there and again using just the shoulders pull the arms back to the side in line with the shoulders, then slowly release back to the start position.

SHOULDER INTERNAL ROTATION (Anterior Rotator Cuff group) The internal and external rotation exercises are really good for strengthening the inside muscle and tendons called the Rotator Cuff. For this internal rotation keep the elbow squeezed into the waist at a 90ÂŽ bend. Start with the arms pointing straight ahead (if possible a little bit abducted too) and then simply pull the forearm across the body, slowly release and repeat.

+

Check out our website for more Fitness tips with Fitness Editor Leah Preston.

SHOULDER EXTERNAL ROTATION (Posterior Rotator Cuff group) If you are going to do the external rotation the it is always in your best interest to do the internal rotation as it keeps the joint in symmetrical strength. Keep the elbow squeezed in the waist and at 90速. Start with the forearm across the front of the body (forearm resting across the stomach) and then rotate the forearm outwards as far as you feel comfortable (remember to keep those elbows squeezed in).

LATERAL RAISE (Deltoids) This can be done standing, or if your band is too short you can kneel on it or sit on a chair with the band under your feet. I have done this one standing, make sure you are standing on the band firmly. Get a good grip of the band, keep a soft bend in the elbows and raise the arms up to shoulder height and then lower back with control and repeat.

SHOULDER PRESS (Deltoids and Triceps) Again, this one can be done standing, kneeling or seated. Standing firmly on the band and with a good grip start with your arms up and out to the side of the body with elbows at 90速, from there all we do is push upwards so the arms are straight (try not to let the hands touch once extended) Once again slowly release being the arms back to the side at 90速 and then repeat.

/037/

With two rounds of the Maxxis ACU British Motocross Championship supported by Pro Clean already in the books, 2016 is shaping up to be one of the closest seasons in recent history. In the MX2 class the top three riders are separated by just 1 point going into round 3 at Hawkstone Park where Steven Clarke and James Dunn are tied on points ahead of Martin Barr. While in the MX1 class the battle between Simpson and Searle sees the Scot leading by just 4 points over Searle.

/SEARLE’S TOUGH DAY AT THE HEIGHTS

Three weeks on from a great day’s racing at Canada Heights it’s sure to say that if you haven’t seen the Slo-mo footage of Tommy Searle’s first turn crash then you must have been living under a rock in recent weeks. For Tommy to be able to walk away from the crash was one minor miracle but to then make a remarkable recovery to finish in 9th after being nearly a lap down was something else. Searle then backed the result up by taking victory in race two and securing second overall on the day to turnaround a challenging day at the Kent circuit.

/039/

/DOUBLE TOP FOR CLARKE/

Canada Heights marked a day of firsts for Apico Husqvarna’s Steven Clarke, the former European 250 Champion. After tough opening round at Lyng with a technical issue in the opening moto while running in third, the second round marked a new day and a fast time in qualifying set the tone for the day. His first double race win in the Maxxis along with the overall victory and the Red Plate for the first time in the British made for a very happy camper. To top it off his team mate Bryan MacKenzie stood beside him on the second step of the podium, while young Scot Alexander Brown took another overall victory in the MXY2 class and continues to lead the MXY2 Championship. /040/

/STANDOUT STARS/ The of opening MX2 race the day at the Heights saw a number of standout results including Verde Sports KTM rider Jake Millward taking the holeshot and early race lead to go on and finish in fourth place for a career best. Another rider producing a superb result in the same race was 2013 MXY2 champion Rob Davidson as he claimed sixth place.

/HEADING FOR THE HILL /RETURN OF POCOCK/ Leading up to the Canada Heights event one of the big stories was the return of the Mel Pocock, over a year since his hand injury at the opening round of the 2015 season. Pocock’s day started with 10th fastest in qualifying but goggle issues in the opening race limited his progress. The second race would see Pocock finish in a well-earned fifth place and proved that he still has the pace and determination to challenge for race wins in the near future. Welcome Back Mel!!

Next stop for the Championship sees round 3 take place at the famous Hawkstone Park on the 22nd May. The demanding sand circuit has always produced some exciting racing over the years and the circuit can be located using the postcode SY4 4NA. Camping is available on site from Saturday with admission prices at £20 for Adults, £5 for children under 14 or £45 for a Family ticket. Practice starts at 9am with the MX2 class out of track, before the first race at 11:55am. So make sure your there early so that you don’t miss any of the action.

If you could name one rider who deserves a break, that rider would have to be Adam Cianciarulo. I’ve met Adam a few times now and each time he’s super polite and above all gets it, the last time being in California when preparing for the 2015 Supercross season.

He gets that his job is to talk to the press, engage with his fans and ride his dirt bike as fast as he can. Adam was super hyped as the next HUGE thing in motocross and to be fair he was and probably still is but he needs to stay 100% healthy for the whole season. Since his pro debut in 2013 he has been plagued with injuries, infact he’s never finished a season - the pressure must be intense to say the least. One thing Adam has done which I’ve already mentioned, Adam gets that his job has various elements to it, fans, sponsors and media responsibilities are part of the game and so is social media, a phenomenon which has exploded onto the scene over the last few years. His ability to engage and have a little fun is second to none, this bodes very well with his sponsors even though his results have been obliterated by injuries. With the AMA outdoor season literally a few days away, we wish Adam a season that himself, fans and the industry will remember for a long time - the complete package is just waiting to happen.

<WAYNE SMITH/ The change from racing week in week out and then working a normal 9-5 job must have been huge? “It was a huge adjustment going from the racing lifestyle to suddenly working 9-5 on an hourly rate and the repetition and routine were hard. The lifestyle I had when I was a kid was to eat, sleep and breathe bikes. Travelling round Europe in your camper, committing only to your training and bike, weekends full of adrenaline /050/

and doing something you loved. No matter if you had a bad weekend or how hard the track or race was, racing was always so rewarding to me. It was my entire life and then all of a sudden it was gone. It was a huge lifestyle change and I struggled to begin with. Fair to say I was probably a nightmare to live with for the missus. It’s something that only another sportsman would understand as I’m sure all the guys do that retire from the sport to do

something completely different.” And you’re a Father, now that must have been a huge change again? “I became a Dad to twins in 2011, Jake and Ella who came 9 weeks early so suddenly we were living in a hospital for weeks and it wasn’t me in the hospital bed for once. Being a Father completely changed me and suddenly it’s not all about you and everything you do has an impact on someone else. They became my

Sadly our son Jake suffers from a rare and life limiting condition Dravet Syndrome which causes lots of problems including seizures. After travelling around Europe from an early age, life just got real. has meant a complete lifestyle change for us.” Incredible, I never knew that. Are bikes completely out of your life now? “I stayed away from motocross for a long time as I found it too hard watching and not being a part of it but last year I decided to get back involved in the sport. I’m a qualified MCF trainer and have been running training schools and one to one training which has really taken
