About Sika-Design In 1942 Ankjær Andreasen established Sika Møbler near Skanderborg in Denmark. In 1951 Sika Møbler moved to the island of Fyn, and expanded the production of rattan furniture.

Knud Andreasen’s daughter Louise Andreasen joined the company in 1996. She insisted that Sika should stick to its roots and continue producing high quality rattan furniture.

Ankjær Andreasen only worked with the best wicker makers, and together they perfected the art of wicker, focusing on what was to become Sika-Møbler’s design identity: Comfort, Quality and Design.

Today the factory is located in Indonesia, where the most skilled wicker makers are, and where the raw material rattan is growing. The headoffice and warehouse is located in Denmark.

In 1981 Ankjær’s son, Knud Andreasen bought the company, and in 1993 Sika-Møbler acquired its biggest competitor Horsnæs Møbler and thereby became Sika-Horsnaes.

In 2010 Sika-Horsnaes changed the company name to Sika-Design, for a more international profile.

70 years after Ankjær founded the company, Sika-Design is still applying the same standards as when the furniture were produced in Denmark more than 4 decades ago.

About Rattan Furniture produced of rattan, are popularly known as wicker furniture, bamboo furniture or woven furniture. Rattan is remarkable hardwearing and at the same time a very lightweight material. We often see some of our models lasting several generations. Unlike bamboo, which is a hollow material, rattan is solid. Rattan is in the palm family and grows climbing up the trees in the rainforest. About 80% of the worlds rattan comes from Indonesia and it grows naturally without disturbing the existing structure and balance in the rainforest.

The rattan cord can grow up to 185 meters long and there is more than 200 known species of the rattan plant. To maintain the rattan production it is necessary to preserve the trees, why the rattan plant indirect helps care for the rain forest in Indonesia. Rattan is one of the fastest growing materials, which also filter the air and converts most CO2 to oxygen. It regene rates it self in a cycle on 5-7 years. Rattan is resistant against heat, cold, moist and temperature fluctuations, and is a sustainable material, that fulfils our production philosophy of ethics and common sense.

ARNE JACOBSEN

Arne Jacobsen (1902-1971) Arne Jacobsen was born on February 11, 1902 in Copenhagen. He first hoped to become a painter, but Jacob sen was admitted to the Architecture School at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts from 1924 to 1927. Still a student, in 1925 Jacobsen participated in the Paris Art Deco fair, Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, where he won a silver medal, for his first furniture design, which was a chair made in rattan, simply called: “The Paris chair.“ 4

In 1929, he won a Danish Architect’s Association competition for designing the “House of the Future” which was built full scale at the subsequent exhibition in Copenhagen’s Forum. It was a spiral-shaped, flatroofed house in glass and concrete, incorporating a private garage, a boat-house and a helicopter pad. Arne Jacobsen immediately became recognized as an ultra-modern architect.

NANNA & JØRGEN DITZEL

Nanna & Jørgen Ditzel (1923-2005) (1921-1961) The Danish designers Nanna and Jørgen Ditzel exhi bited their first furniture designs in Copenhagen, when they were still students at the Industrial Arts and Crafts College, Copenhagen. Ditzel’s experimental approach to materials resulted in the 3-legged rattan chair in 1951.

The chair is designed on the basis of the body. It is one of the first chairs based on the idea of integrating a shell on a frame as one piece. Sika-Design was honoured with the Innovation award selection-label at the furniture fair in Cologne in January 2013 for relaunching Ditzel’s 3-legged chair “Rana.”

From his workshop Viggo Boesen designed a number of rattan and upholstery furniture, which was constructed according to his philosophy: Furniture should have an organic flow and embrace the body smoothly and tenderly, they should be a delight to the eye, but also be solid and durable.

W I C K ER M A K ER S AT WO R K

R. Wengler Royal Danish wicker maker to the Crown Estbl. 1854 R. Wengler, who was born in Germany, perfected the fine craftsmanship of making wicker furniture in materials like rush and willow, materials which you could find and grow in Europe.

Among those were Danish architects Arne Jacobsen, Viggo Boesen, Nanna & Jørgen Ditzel and Kay Bojesen. They had many of their prototypes made in R. Wenglers workshop in Copenhagen.

Louis Wengler, the son of Robert Wengler, found the exotic material rattan at the Leipziger fair in Germany.

Today R. Wengler stands as one of the pioneers in Rattan production.

R. Wengler was appointed as wicker maker to the Crown in 1914 as King Christian X placed a large order for a rattan furnishing.

What he did to the craftsmanship and the way he challenged the material, makes ground for the way we know rattan furniture today.

Wicker maker Robert Wengler was now known as the best wicker maker in Denmark and many, now famous, architects came to his workshop to get know-how and understanding about weaving and wicker work.

Sika-Design is relaunching the dining chair designed by R. Wengler. The chair is available in natural polished rattan or in polished black matt.
