COLOR BOX DESIGN & LETTERPRESS BEYOND THE BLUE DOOR

— what happens in there? What is a letterpress?

Who is Color Box Letterpress & Design? Where do they come up with this stuff? All valid questions — and you’re in luck, we’re here to end your COLOR BOX CURIOSITY. Color Box Design & Letterpress is a boutique letterpress studio nestled in Dallas, Texas by White Rock Lake. It’s been voted in the past as readers’ choice for Dallas’s best stationer, with various works featured in D Weddings, Paper City and The Dallas Morning News. Color Box has grown its business from an independent stationer into a thriving creative house. With a pinch of charm and a dash of wit, this duo of letterpress ladies does it all, from invitations for all occasions, to logos and branding, AND a line of greeting cards, notebooks, gifts, notecards and other irresistibly cute things that will make you ooh-and-ahh.

Rhonda Camp Warren started her career in corporate graphic design, but with her colorful wardrobe and bright laugh (you ought to hear it for yourself), she decided to give it a whirl on her own, in the great big city of Dallas. After designing solo for a year, she had an interesting call one day from the owner of a local paper store. There was a Vandercook 4 press up for adoption, and she had remembered Rhonda mentioning her love of letterpress. A dutiful wife, Rhonda called her husband, Lelan, to discuss the matter before taking on the 1,100 pounds of steel. Without Rhonda’s passion for print, Lelan was worried about diving into the unknown world of the printing press. He advised Rhonda to consider their lack of space for the large “hobby” item, so she immediately called the shop owner back and gleefully accepted the Vandercook. Nine years later, the orphan press is still in service alongside another Vandercook 4 and a Kluge platen press. Needless to say, Lelan was pleasantly surprised when what he thought was a hobby turned into a nice little business.

FOR THOSE WHO ARE UNFAMILIAR WITH THE ART OF LETTERPRESS, here’s a quick lesson. Each sheet of paper is hand-fed for each color on the print. On a Vandercook press, the paper wraps around its cylinder, being compressed over a raised plate of photo-polymer, which creates an indentation into the paper. As the cylinder begins its journey down the press, rubber rollers simultaneously ink the plate before the paper contact is made. The depth of the resulting “bite” will vary depending upon the type of paper. (Soft and thick papers will carry a deeper impression than hard or thin papers.) A bit of manual labor is needed to run the presses, but it is a labor of love for the girls at Color Box. As they enjoy bringing their designs to life, they are eager to work hard from start to finish, in hopes of putting a smile on someone’s face when they receive a card or invitation in the mail. Rhonda works alongside Traci Andrejko and team, who have brought artistic value, industry knowledge, commitment to quality, and extra hands for stamping, stuffing, and occasional delivery services. Color Box Design has made custom invitations, menus, tags and favors for many Dallasites and beyond and the ability to be a part of such special times in people’s lives leaves this Color Box crew feeling all warm and fuzzy. But their real passion lies in the beauty of the details. The paper, the press and the people they meet along the way are the foundation of this perfectly placed studio. So beyond the blue door, you will find fresh ideas, endless creative juices, and a dose of positive energy and infectious laughs. Above all, you will find piles and piles of paper just waiting to hit the press.
