Completed in the spring of 2009, the Northern Illinois Track & Field and Soccer Complex features everything a studentathlete needs to attain their maximum potential on the track, and the surrounding support resources ensure every Huskie has what they need to succeed off of it. The track & field part of the new facility features an eight-lane track made with a state-of-the-art material that is conducive to both training and competition. The track’s eight lanes allow for large meets to be held in timely fashion, a fact that is helped by the facility’s eight-lane straightaway. Thanks to a “sandwich system” that layers two synthetics materials, the track surface is nearly impermeable to damage from rain and snow. For field athletes, the complex provides the space needed to compete at the highest levels. The north zone houses the high jump area, which provides all the space needed for a full approach. Opposite the high jump is a place for the pole vault. The west side of the track houses three jump pits, which means the long jump and

For the Huskies, lifting is no chore in the 12,500 square-foot Yordon Center Weight Room. One of the largest and best-equipped facilities in the nation, it features 28 free weight stations and numerous cardiovascular areas, as well as a 40-yard sprint track for speed and agility exercises. THE NORTH 40 Home to the Northern Illinois Cross Country team, the North 40 is a vast expanse with slightly rolling hills and lively trees that burst with vibrant oranges and yellows each fall. Located on the northeast corner of the NIU Campus, the North 40 is home to a segment of the Kishwaukee River, which flows through the heart of the course, providing scenic routes for workouts and races alike. The starting line is 85 meters wide and can accommodate 34 teams. Each box is 2.5 meters wide providing 50 centimeters for five runners to toe the line.There is a common start for the six kilometer and 10 kilometer races. The starting stretch is 525 meters long and gradually narrows to 10 meters wide. There is a four foot elevation increase in the starting stretch. The course is 100 percent grass and is a minimum of 10 meters wide. The course is well marked with solid white lines lining the route. Dashed white lines are used to mark the course at any intersections. At intersections temporary “gates” are provided to guide runners in the correct direction. Several gradual uphills and downhills add a challenge to the course. The finish line is located next to the starting line on the south side. The finish stretch is 525 meters long and has an elevation drop of four feet. The race routes involve a different combination of an outer loop, inner loop and finish loop. Running a series of loops makes the course spectator friendly, providing plenty of chances for spectators and coaches to cheer on the runners.

THE YORDON CENTER WEIGHT ROOM At 12,500 square-feet, NIU’s professional strength and conditioning coaches avoid scheduling conflicts while allowing space for warm-ups, plyometric exercises and speed and agility activities. The spacious area features new equipment with a variety and multitude of machines, as well as a fourlane sprint track.

THE GEORGE & FRANCIS WILKINS ACADEMIC SUPPORT CENTER The heart of the 62,000-square foot Yordon Center features one-on-one tutorial rooms, a group study room and a fullyequipped computer lab, as well as offices for the counselors of the Student-Athlete Academic Support Services (SAASS). This area brings the staff of SAASS into more direct daily contact with NIU’s student-athletes.

CONNIE TEABERRY Head Coach | Sixth Season | Kansas State 1992 Now in her sixth season at Northern Illinois University, Connie Teaberry took the reigns of the women’s track & field and cross country programs in 2004, and under the former Olympian’s able leadership, the programs have shown steady improvement. During Teaberry’s tenure as the women’s head track & field coach, the Huskies have broken 41 school records, won two MAC individual event titles and sent nine competitors to NCAA regionals and one to the NCAA Championships. The NIU record book is stuffed with athletes who have competed under Teaberry. With 41 school records held by her athletes, only nine records remain from before Teaberry’s tenure. Most recently, Teaberry’s athletes set three school records during the 2010 indoor season. Freshman Rhonda Lee shattered the 31-year old 55-m dash mark at the Carthage Tadd Metzger Invitational before breaking another 31-year old record in the 60m dash just two weeks later at the Iowa State Classic. Megan Gregory was also added to the record books when she set the 60m hurdles record at the Panther Open. Under the guidance of Teaberry, the Huskies set seven new school records during the 2009 campaign. In the indoor season Teaberry helped current Huskies Brittany Houghton and Patty Bautista break school records in the triple jump and the pole vault, respectively. The 2009 outdoor season proved to be just as successful as the Huskies set records in the 3,000-meter run, 4x200-meter relay, pole vault, triple jump and javelin throw. Teaberry led Bautista to her second school record of 2009 in the pole vault, while also guiding Rochelle Muskeyvalley, Houghton, Kaylee Walters and Rasheta Butler to the 4x200 relay record. The 41 school records held by Teberry’s athletes include three records set in 2008, as Teaberry helped Brittany Houghton break a 28-year old indoor long jump record, and set a new outdoor triple jump mark. In addition Coretta Evans took to the track to outrun her own outdoor 200m dash mark. The 2007 indoor and outdoor track seasons featured three NCAA Regional Qualifiers, six school records, and saw senior thrower Ashley Morrow advance to the NCAA Championships in Sacramento, Calif. During the 2006 season, Teaberry guided the Huskies to first-place finishes in both the indoor and outdoor Chicagoland Championships meets.The 2006 season also saw Teaberry’s charges reach unparalleled success as the Huskies produced NIU’s second MAC Champion ever in junior thrower Ashley Morrow. Three athletes advanced to the NCAA Regionals, where Morrow qualified for the NCAA Championships. In Teaberry’s inaugural season as the head coach of the women’s track team, she coached Northern’s first individual MAC Champion in over 25 years, and the first Huskie track & field athletes to earn All-MAC honors in Alicja Czajka and Lorene Skipper. Teaberry’s Huskies dominated the field at the Chicagoland Championship on the way to a first-place finish.

A St. Louis, Mo. native, Teaberry began her outstanding athletics career at Lutheran North High School where she won four varsity letters in both basketball and track (1984-88). At Kansas State University, she developed into a world-class high jumper and participated in the U.S.A./Mobil Track & Field Championships and World Championships (1993-95), two Olympic Trials (1992 & 1996) and the World University Games (1993). Highlighting her career at KSU, Teaberry participated in the 1996 Olympic Games where she took home a 15th-place finish. Her ascension in the world high jumping hierarchy began with three then-Big Eight Conference outdoor titles (1990-92). As a senior, Teaberry was selected the Most Valuable Female Athlete at the Big Eight indoor meet, the Kansas State Woman of the Year Award recipient, and then the NCAA Athlete of the Year. At Kansas State, she was a six-time All-American in the high jump, placing at the NCAA indoors in 1990 and 1992, plus outdoors in 1989-92. Teaberry’s 6-1.5 jump at the 1992 Big Eight meet remains the third-best outdoor high jump in school history. Ditto for her 6-2.25 effort indoors at the 1992 Big Eight Championships. Teaberry finished second in the high jump at the 1996 Olympic Trials, ranking No. 2 nationally, and qualified for the U.S. Olympic team in Atlanta where she tied for 15th place. At the 1992 Olympic Trials, she placed 10th in the high jump. She graduated from Kansas State with a bachelor of science degree in life science and pre-nursing and made the Academic Honor Roll in spring 1992. Teaberry is married to DeMarcus Lindsey of Mobile, Ala. The couple has two children, sons Kameron, 13, and Kollan, 8.

Teaberry came to Northern Illinois after brief stints as an assistant women’s track coach at Ohio University (2004), Arizona State University (1998-99), the University of Toledo (1995-98), and the University of Kentucky (1992-95). She displayed her ability to develop jumpers and sprinters in eight years as an assistant, as she trained eight NCAA qualifiers and two individual conference champions.

Mark McConeghey is in his fourth season as assistant coach of the Northern Illinois University women’s cross country and track & field teams. McConeghey arrived at NIU after spending six years at Concordia (Minn.) University as the head men’s and women’s track and field coach. During the 2009 cross country season, McConeghey led the Huskies to their best finish at the Mid-American Conference Championships since the 1981 season. McConeghey guided the cross country team to an eighth-place finish at the Championships, NIU’s second-best finish at MAC championships in school history. “Coach McConeghey’s 25 years of coaching have brought wisdom, respect and results to our program,” said NIU head coach Connie Teaberry. “In the four years he has been with the team, our distance performance has improved dramatically. I am excited about the continued advancement of our distance athletes.” During his time in St. Paul, McConeghey oversaw Concordia’s move to Division II in 1999-2000. His track and field squads broke 99 school records, and only six school records remain from prior to his arrival at Concordia. He was the 2004 NSIC Outdoor Track Coach of the Year. He also had two athletes compete in the NCAA Championships and had 42 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference champions from 1999-2005. McConeghey has extensive Division I experience as well, spending seven years (1986-93) in Ames, Iowa under Iowa State’s legendary cross country/ track and field coach Bill Bergan, including during the Cyclones’ run to the 1989 National Men’s Cross Country Championship.

Kevin Dwyer is in his first season with the Northern Illinois University’s women’s track and field program. Dwyer coaches the heptathlon, pole vault, and all throwing events. A native of Arlington Heights, Ill., Dwyer was an assistant track and field summer coach at Hersey High School in Arlington Heights in 2008 and 2009. At Hersey, he was responsible for leading more than 50 athletes in multiple track events. “Coach Dwyer is a great addition to our program,” said NIU head coach Connie Teaberry. “He brings a lot of diversity to the team, being that in his collegiate career he competed as a decathlete and in the open event. It really helps me as a head coach to have an assistant coach that has such a broad range of expertise. In terms of what we are looking to do this year, and where we are trying to improve in the conference, he has everything we need to give these ladies the confidence they need to succeed.” A 2009 graduate of Miami (Ohio) University, Dwyer was a two-time NCAA national qualifier in the decathlon. In both 2008 and 2009, he finished among the nation’s finest decathletes, finishing 19th and 13th, respectively, at the NCAA Championships. The 2008 conference decathlon champion, Dwyer was also an NCAA Regional Qualifier in the long jump in 2009 and javelin in 2008. Dwyer graduated with a bachelor’s of science degree in science in health and sports studies. In addition to his playing career, he assisted in the organization of the 2007 MAC Track and Field meet, which was attended by more than 300 athletes. Dwyer also interned with ISP, America’s Home for College Sports, in the spring of 2009.

Combination of Skilled Veterans and Versatile Newcomers Propel Huskie Track and Field A mix of senior leadership, experienced veterans and versatile newcomers have combined forces to comprise the successful 200910 Northern Illinois track and field team. The combination of talented underclassmen and proven dexterity of the Huskie veterans form a Huskie team that is a powerhouse on the track and in the field. In her sixth season, head coach Connie Teaberry has put together a group of student-athletes who have helped NIUâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s track and field program reach unparalleled levels of success. The 2009-10 indoor track and field season provided clear evidence. As the 2009-10 track and field season got underway, Northern Illinois welcomed back 25 letterwinners, including seven NIU school record holders. Joining the veteran class on the track and in the field, 12 newcomers have become a force to be reckoned with. In the sprint events, the Huskies will field one its most talented groups in years. The 2009 season saw three NIU school records shattered in the sprints. Under the leadership of veteran sprinters Rasheta Butler, Roneisha Frye, Chanel Kellyman and Rochelle Muskeyvalley, newcomers Megan Gregory and Rhonda Lee have already made their mark with their performances in the 2009-10 indoor season and added their names to the NIU record books. In her first collegiate meet, sophomore Gregory set a school record in the 60-meter hurdles at the Eastern Michigan Open, a record she reset twice during the 2009-10 season, most recently at the Panther Open, Jan. 16 with a time of 8.60 seconds. Meanwhile, fellow sophomore Lee shattered two 31-year old school records, beginning at the Carthage College Tadd Metzger Invitational on Jan. 30 when she raced to a first-place time of 7.16 seconds in

2009-10 NIU TRACK ANDFIELD the 55-meter dash. Two weeks later, Lee broke the school record in the 60-meter dash at the Iowa State Classic on Feb. 13, posting a time of 7.70 seconds. In the middle distance and distance events Teaberry added four newcomers to a savvy group of middle and distance runners. As a freshman, Courtney Oldenburg made an immediate impact as she concluded the 2009-10 indoor season with the Huskies’ top times in the 800-meter, 3,000-meter and 1-mile run. Joining Oldenburg as the top performers in the middle and distance events were juniors Sunsea Shaw and Breanna Brevitt. Shaw led the Huskies in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 3:08.19, while Brevitt notched the Huskies top place in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 18:59.37. Off the track, the Huskies made their mark on the field this season. Sophomore Patty Bautista, who holds both the NIU indoor and outdoor pole vault records, and Elizabeth Danley achieved the Huskies’ top mark in the pole vault during the 2009-10 indoor competition when each vaulted 8-06.25 at the Eastern Illinois Early Bird Invitational, Dec. 11, 2009. Fellow veterans Jenner Sio and Kelly Moser earned top marks for the Huskies in the triple jump and high jump, respectively. Sio recorded the Huskies best triple jump at the Mid-American Conference Championships, Feb. 26, when she leapt 3708.00. Moser leapt 5-03.15 to lead NIU in the high jump. The newcomers, however, were not left out of the mix as Lee and Tiffany Wallick each excelled in the field events. Lee long jumped 18-04.50, while Wallick threw the shot put 40-11.50 to lead Northern Illinois during the indoor season. This talented combination of NIU student-athletes has proven to be a driving force on the track and field. As the Huskies closed out the 2009-10 indoor campaign, they will look to carry their success into the 2010 outdoor track and field season. Head track and field coach Connie Teaberry is confident that the 2009-10 track and field team has everything it takes for the team to perform well during the outdoor season. “The staff and I are really looking forward to seeing how the girls fare,” sadi Teaberry. “We believe they are very capable and ready to not only face, but perform well, against tough competition. We’re expecting to see some great times and finishes from the ladies this season.”

Rhonda Lee The Huskies will also travel to Austin, Texas to compete in the Texas Relays hosted by the University of Texas, April 1-3, before heading to Knoxville, Tenn. just one week later to compete in the Sea Relays on April 8-10. NIU will return home for the first time in 2009-10 to host the Huskie Invitational on April 17 at the NIU Track & Field and Soccer Complex. The Huskies will then travel to the 101st Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa for their last regular season road meet, April 22-24. In a final tune-up before the 2010 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships, the Huskies will return home to host the Huskie Open on April 29 in DeKalb, Ill.. NIU will conclude its 2010 conference schedule in Buffalo, N.Y. at the 2010 MAC Outdoor Championships, May 12-15. “The coaching staff and I have set up our outdoor schedule so that it will be very competitive,” Teaberry said. “We want to make sure that the student-athletes get to see and compete against the top competition in the country, so that we’re prepared for tough competition when we enter the MAC Outdoor Championships in May.”

Northern Illinois opens its outdoor season at the University of Nevada Las Vegas, when the Huskies travel to Las Vegas, Nev. on March 6 to compete in the UNLV Track Classic.

•The American Chemical Society (ACS) has ranked the NIU Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry among the top 25 in the nation for the number of ACS-certified bachelor’s degrees awarded annually. The department also is wellknown for producing highly sought-after chemistry and science teachers. •U.S. News & World Report ranks the NIU Master’s in Public Administration (MPA) program in the top 10 nationally in the field of city management and for public finance. • About one-third of Illinois city managers are graduates of the NIU MPA program, a major force behind efforts to professionalize municipal staffs in Illinois and advance the national good government movement.

One of the newest buildings on campus, Barsema Hall is the home of NIU’s highly-respected College of Business.

•NIU’s Department of Accountancy has consistently been ranked in the nation’s top 10 by the Public Accounting Report, while its graduate program has become a fixture in that ranking’s top 20. •Northern Illinois University’s marketing program is ranked among the top five percent in the nation by Chicago-based Professional Society for Sales and Marketing Training. NIU’s Professional Selling program was the first collegiate sales program in the nation certified by SMT. • Students from the NIU College of Engineering and Engineering Technology took first place in the Spring 2007 Basic Utility Vehicle Competition hosted by the Institute for Affordable Transportation in Indianapolis. The Institute challenges teams to design and build simple, durable and affordable transportation that can be manufactured cheaply in third world countries. •The 2007 graduates of the NIU School of Nursing posted a 99 percent passing rate on the National Council of State Boards of Nursing Licensure Examination. Comparatively, the pass rate was 86 percent for all nursing programs in Illinois and 85 percent for all U.S. programs.

he Mid-American Conference was founded as a fiveschool league on February 24, 1946 in Columbus, Ohio with Ohio, Butler, Cincinnati, Wayne State and Western Reserve admitted as charter members. Today the MidAmerican Conference has 12 full-time schools and a 13th, Temple, for football only, and sponsors 23 sports. Comprising the East Division are Akron (joined in 1992), Bowling Green State (1952), Buffalo (1998), Kent State (1951), Miami (1947), Ohio (1946) and Temple (2007). The West Division members are Ball State (1973), Central Michigan (1971), Eastern Michigan (1971), Northern Illinois (1975-86, 1997), Toledo (1950) and Western Michigan (1947). One of only 11 football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) conferences, the MAC named Dr. Jon Steinbrecher as its eighth commissioner in the 63-year history of the league this past March. Steinbrecher came to the MAC after serving for six years as the commissioner of the Ohio Valley Conference. hen a Northern Illinois University student-athlete steps onto campus in DeKalb, Illinois, they are stepping onto the national stage. Located just 65 miles west of downtown Chicago, the nation’s third-largest media market, Huskie student-athletes are a part of one of this country’s great sports towns. During the 2007-08 season, the NIU football team took on Iowa at Soldier Field in the fall, while the baseball team faced Notre Dame at U.S. Cellular Field in the spring. In 2011, the Huskies will return to Soldier Field to play Wisconsin. DeKalb’s proximity to Chicago also affords local citizens, including NIU students, the opportunity to experience all that the city has to offer, from cultural events and festivals, to restaurants and theatres. Three airports – O’Hare, Midway and Rockford – are within an hour’s drive of NIU. While it is close to the “Windy City” and the city’s ever-expanding western suburbs, DeKalb maintains a unique character and offers a quality existence to its nearly 45,000 residents. DeKalb is successfully combining the old and the new as brick-paved streets and historic homes co-exist with a growing business sector and brand new residential and commercial developments. In addition to many activities, including Huskie athletics, available on campus, DeKalb is famous for its annual “CornFest,” welcoming students back to town in late August.

he Jeffrey & Kimberly Yordon Center is a state-of-theart facility in every way. From the Midwest Orthopaedic Training Room to the Chet and Teresa Young Equipment Room, the strength & conditioning center to the Frances and George Wilkins Academic Support Center, every Huskie student-athlete is provided with the resources necessary to excel in the classroom and in competition. While all 450 NIU student-athletes utilize the Yordon Center throughout the year, the facility is the full-time home of the Huskie football program, with locker rooms for players and coaches, meeting rooms, a spacious football equipment room and office space. The heart of the 62,000-square foot Yordon Center, the Frances and George Wilkins Academic Support Center (honoring Carole & Joe Novak), features one-on-one tutorial rooms, a group study room and a fully-equipped computer lab, as well as offices for the counselors of the Student-Athlete Academic Support Services (SAASS) unit. This area brings the staff of SAASS into more direct daily contact with NIU’s student-athletes and is a constant hub of activity in the building. The 12,500-square foot strength & conditioning center allows NIU’s professional sports performance coaches to avoid scheduling conflicts between teams while allowing space for warm-ups, plyometric exercises and speed and agility activities. The spacious area features brand new equipment with a variety and multitude of machines, as well as a three-lane sprint track. All Huskie student-athletes benefit from the spacious and technologically-advanced facilities used by NIU’s professional athletic training staff and team doctors to prevent, treat and rehabilitate injuries in the Yordon Center. Doctors and trainers have been provided with all the tools they need, as the Yordon Center’s state-of-the-art health center features an X-ray room, doctor’s office, two rehabilitation pools, a drug testing area and offices for staff.
