Long term licensee at the Ploughman at Werrington, Andy Simmonds, has threatened to quit after a dispute with his landlord. After running the pub for the past 15 years, he had tried to purchase the freehold, but the current owners have withdrawn it from sale, allegedly to redevelop the building, and demanded a hefty service charge. Peterborough MP Paul Bristow has pledged to support the campaign to keep the pub, which has raised thousands of
pounds for charity in recent years, open but Andy has suggested he will walk away if no solution is found after the next charity Beer Festival (June 29th -July2nd)
Some positive news from the Peterborough area is that we have a new regular music venue. Sue and Andy Ruddy left the Ruddy Duck in Peakirk in March after 20 years, and the new tenants are Marie and David Mitchell, who have moved over from running the ‘At Last Tea Rooms’ in Werrington where they provided
regular live entertainment. Along with Charley Moore, formerly of fellow Venture Pub Co. pub, the Dragon, they’ll be offering live music in the ‘Piano Room’, initially every fortnight, and at least two real ales (London Pride and Ossett White Rat when we visited) plus regular food including pizzas and Sunday roasts. Opening times are from 3pm Mon-Weds and from 12 Thurs-Sun. The Woolpack at Stanground now features Thai cuisine courtesy of ‘Taste ofThailand’

The Ploughman to close for good?
Marie and Charley at the Ruddy Duck
The Hand & Heart in Millfield celebrated 20 consecutive years in the Good Beer Guide in early March. The pub is the last in Cambridgeshire to be listed in CAMRA’s national inventory of historic interiors. Also celebrating is the Blue Bell at Maxey, with 10 years in the guide. The Three Horseshoes at Yaxley has closed – owning Pubco, Stonegate is looking for new tenants. The Prince of Wales Feathers at Castor has also closed its doors due to spiralling costs
Peterborough based Oakham Ales has celebrated 30 years since its launch (originally by John Wood in Oakham) with a special anniversary ale called Lord Maximus – a nod to its first brew the nationally renowned Jeffrey Hudson Bitter (JHB). A second noise test has been taken at the Ostrich Inn in Peterborough by environmental consultants, and has concluded that the plan to build 125 flats in the former Beales/ Westgate House store should go ahead. Landlord Graham Finding fears that complaining tenants could potentially put the pub, which offers regular live music, at
risk. After much delay, the opening of Peterborough’s prestigious 160-room Hilton Garden Inn on Fletton Quays is now expected to take place in December. The top floor will feature a ‘Sky Bar’ with views across the river Nene to thecathedral.
The Grade II listed New Crown in Whittlesey has been taken over by Louisa and Jonathan Weston. They’ve moved up from London and one of their first priorities is to reintroduce traditional pub food. I’m sure I wasn’t alone in thinking that the closure of Wittering’s only pub, the Phoenix, at the end of last year would be permanent, but reports suggest this quirky little boozer is trading again. It looks like John McGinn’s departure from the Dog in a Doublet is permanent as he’s taken over at the Stag in Woodwalton near Huntingdon, and will be renaming it the Dog & Castle, as a combination of his former pub and the new pub’s original name (the Elephant & Castle)
In Rutland, the Grainstore Brewery claimed the 2023 Camra Pub of the Year Award. The Plough at Caldecott was
voted runner-up - Gene and Debbie Power have run the pub for 25 years and offer a range of real ales with local brands and local produce on the menu. Normanton Park Hotel alongside Rutland Water has launched a Sunday carvery from April. The former Barnsdale Lodge, near Rutland Water, has reopened after a multi-million pound refurbishment and renamed The Barnsdale. The bar now offers cocktails prepared by the resident mixologist, along with a couple of Grainstore beers including their own ‘Barnsdale Ale’ and the restaurant has been rebranded the 1760 Brasserie. Light bites are available in the Orangery and courtyard, all of the 46 rooms have been renovated and outdoor activities have been introduced. Future plans include a spa and new events barn. The Old Pheasant at Glaston, near Uppingham, renowned for its Sunday roasts, closed suddenly in early March when the tenants handed the keys back. It’s hoped the pub will reopen soon. The lease for the Railway Inn at Oakham remains up for grabs with Stonegate – interested

A new distillery and vineyard has been set up at Church Farm in Essendine, near Stamford. Mallard Point is run by husband and wife team, Andy and Fi Beamish. The first wine from the vines, planted in 2019, is expected to be ready in May. Ketton’s Bakers Dozen Brewery scooped another top prize at the SIBA National Independent Brewing Awards when they picked up a Silver Award for ‘Undertow’ Keg Pale Ale, having won the regional award in October. Oakham’s Grainstore Brewery won Gold for their ‘Nip’ cask ale. The Six Bells at Witham-on-the Hill near Stamford, has been named as a ‘Bib Gourmand’ restaurant by the Michelin Guide – one of only three to hold the accolade in Lincolnshire. The award is given for ‘great quality, great value cooking’. Hambelton Hall has retained its Michelin Star rating for the 41st consecutive year. Also recognised in then Guide are The Olive Branch at Clipsham and Hitchen’s Barn in Oakham. The Corn Exchange Theatre in
Stamford is looking to extend its bar/hospitality area by knocking through to a neighbouring 2nd floor room (which it also owns) to create a newlounge.
Bowlers Brewery in Deeping are experiencing a boom in sales thanks to more local pubs taking their beer, they’ve also been represented recently at the festivals in St Neots, Loughborough and the SIBA National BeerX event in Liverpool. The Langtoft Festival is to return this summer after a 2 year break. The event on July 1st will feature live music, fairground rides, food stalls, football activities and a Viking demonstration. Interested parties should email Liz Jarman – emjarman28@gmail.com.
Bourne Town Hall has received a £300k grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund for its regeneration project, along with additional support from the Archtectural Heritage Fund. It’s hoped that the Grade II listed property will continue to develop as a community hub, and this latest step paves the way for a possible further full grant of £2.2Million.
The Bourne Corn Exchange has commenced Sunday Carveries from March. The permanent closure of Bourne’s Bar 1888 has been confirmed after struggling to make profits due to rising costs. The owners have stated that the bar could survive if the right candidates come forward to take on thelease.
Tenants are still being sought for the Shuckburgh Arms at Southwick, run until recently by the local community. Interested parties are requested to contact the agents (Strutt & Parker 01780 510039). Up the road in Ashton, the Chequered Skipper has closed after the management were unable to agree terms of a new lease. Another local pub/ restaurant forced to close is the Willow & Brook (formerly the Kings Head) in Apethorpe. Suzanne & Jim Millar who took over in 2020 survived the effects of pandemic lockdowns, but have finally been defeated by rocketing costs and a trend towards ‘eating in’. The Exeter Arms at Barrowden reopened in March with new tenantsDarren & Amanda Wells. They’ve

Brewsters Brewery is celebrating 25 yrs of operations. The name ‘Brewster’ in an old English term for a female brewer – Sara Barton has been owner and head brewer at the Grantham brewery since the launch in 1998. Angel & Royal owner Dean Harrison has further plans to develop the business after relaunching the Angel Bar as a cocktail bar with occasional live music. Three former unused areas including ‘The Cottage’ – currently used as a workshop and storage - will be converted into en-suite rooms. The Angel Bar opens Thurs- Sat evenings. The Green Man at Ropsley, near Grantham has been voted ‘East of England Champion’ at the Countryside Alliance awards – they now go on to take part in the National final awarded at the Houses of Parliament in May. Further to our report on the Cholmeley Arms in Burton Coggles in the last issue, we’ve been asked to point out that John Berry will not be continuing with the adjacent Farm Shop – a new owner will be taking control from August 1 – our apologies to John andLesley!
Closed since the pandemic, the Whichcote Arms at Osbournby, between Bourne and Sleaford, has openened again after a major overhaul, which includes the provision of letting rooms and a village shop. The pub is now open daily from 3pm,
offering a couple of cask ales, but if you’re visiting do remember to pronounce the name of the village correctly – it’s ‘Ozzenby!’ Also open again is the Three Kings Inn at Threekingham. It’s been taken over by Martin Forward and John Budworth, who have moved over from the Crown at Holbeach, are keen to see it as a community hub as well as introducing live music and extending the beer garden. It seems our humble magazine has inspired the landlords at the Black Bull in Ruskington near Sleaford into researching the history of their pub. An attractive plaque above the fireplace now lists all the licensees since1842.
PUBS NO MORE…
Plans to convert the former John Clare pub in Gunthorpe, Peterborough which has stood empty for almost a decade, to 16 flats have been rejected by the City Council, due to the scale of the proposal and lack of parking provision. Having been subject to
numerous arson attacks in the 10 years since closure, the derelict New Castle Inn in Boston is to be demolished to make way for 32 flats. Sold recently at auction, the derelict Sutton Bridge Hotel, has been hit with another arson attack. Closed in 2020, the Springfield Arms in Grantham has failed to attract new tenants – it is now proposed that the building should be converted into 6 apartments. The former Bell Inn at Pinchbeck is to be converted to flats with nine bungalows planned for the car park area. An architectural evaluation will be required first as there was originally a medieval settlement on thesite. Closed for several years, and once home to the Newby Wyke Brewery, the Willoughby Arms at Little Bytham has been sold to the Hare Krishna Federation for use as accommodation and a vegan restaurant. It is understood that rock personality Chrissie Hynde has helped to finance the project.

The Queen’s Head sits at the centre of the quiet village of Newton, six miles south of Cambridge and holds a place in the tiny but select club of pubs that have appeared in every issue of the Good Beer Guide since it was launched fifty years ago. Currently in the hands of the Rob, the third generation of the Short family, tradition runs through the veins of this free house, and its winning formula has endured through the years, thanks mainly to a lack of change. A board displays the names of

landlords over the centuries, and it has passed through the hands of just 18 different custodians in nearly 300years. The first thing you notice as you enter is the traditional ‘Jug & Bottle’ service hatch for off sales, and to the right the main bar retains quarry tiled floors, low ceilings with crooked beams, wood panelled walls with wooden benches and settles, a large fireplace, piano and paintings adorning the cream painted walls. To the left a quiet carpeted saloon with another fireplace, bay window and tables for diners, with a further, though no longer used, inglenook at the rear. Beyond the fireplace in the main bar, there’s a games area where traditional delights such as Shove Ha’penny, Table Skittles, Bar Billiards and darts are still enjoyed, indeed a photograph above the window shows the Shah of Persia enjoying a game with Harry & Ruth Short on a visit in the 1960’s.
Some may point to the lack of innovation in the beer range, but if it ain’t broke …etc!
You can though rely on the quality of the Adnams Bitter and 2-3, usually East Anglian based, guest ales, such as those when we visited: Woodfordes Wherry, Lacons Falcon Ale and Side Pocket for a Toad from the Tring Brewery, served direct from a stillage immediately behind the bar. There’s also usually a real cider available. Food is usually limited to the famous home-made ‘Brown Soup’ and sandwiches, but Sunday roasts are now offered
along with Bistro nights on Saturdays and visiting street food vans on Wednesdays offering a variety of fayre including steaks, chillis, pizzas and Middle Easterncuisine.
The ambience and the welcome are warm, and there’s a strong and loyal local customer base. We quickly got chatting to the landlord and friendly barmaid, Laura who were more than happy to chat about the pub and itshistory.
The pub is open from 12-2.30pm, and from 5pm Tuesday to Saturday (12-4pm Sundays)

It’s a Georgian spa town with population of around 75,000, largely unspoilt and definitely upmarket, so you could say Harrogate resembles a ‘large Stamford’ and it certainly boasts some lovely pubs, so this is one I was looking forward to. The town can be reached via York or
HARROGATE
So, with a journey time of around 2 and a quarter hours at a fare of just under £40 for a railcard subsidised day return we arrived at the station and fell immediately into the Harrogate Tap. I say immediately, but modern standards dictate that you have to exit the concourse
Arbor, Vault City, Three Brothers, BritHop, Farm Yard, Wilde Child, Thornbridge and their own ‘Tapped’ brands at prices from £4.50 to £5.50, along with a range of sandwiches for a fiver. Turning right, Station Parade leads to the Disappearing Chin, an unassuming micropub opened
Leeds – we chose the York route with the view that in case of any delay in the connecting service, we’d at least have the joys of the York Tap to fall back on! It also offers the chance to admire the views from the viaduct over the River Nidd at Knaresborough and, for the anoraks amongst us, the charming gated manned crossings and traditional semaphore signalling along theway.
and re-enter the pub from the taxi rank area! This lovely pub is part of the Pivovar Group which has the station ‘Taps’ at York and Sheffield, Newcastle and another 8 pubs in the North and Midlands. Opened in 2015, and housed in the former refreshment rooms, it’s a great way to start the day with pleasing wood panelled decor, real cider and 11 good quality ales from breweries such as
in 2019 in a former retail unit, with three cask ales (from Flash House and the local Roosters Brewery) and 8 keg lines. The shop window has been imaginatively turned into a ‘shisha style’ lounging area. A left turn into Oxford St leads past ‘Arkwright’s Tool Emporium’ complete with ‘four candles’ in the window, to North Bar – a card-only pub, part of the North Group of around 10 pubs (mainly in the North of England) and

offering a couple of cask ales from Arbor and Brass Castle plus a range of 14 craft kegs. Further along Oxford St stands the Inn at Cheltenham Parade – formerly the Harrogate Brasserie – now a Timothy Taylor pub with a good range of five of their beers, well kept by friendly landlord, Geoff.
From there it’s a short walk to Cold Bath Brewing on Kings Rd, where on most days you can enjoy the aromas of brewing from the small brewery unit housed on a mezzanine above the bar area. Their Pilsner beer
Little Ale House - Harrogate’s first micropub, which opens at 3pm Mon-Thurs, 2pm Fri & Sun and 12 noon on Saturdays. Another retail unit conversion – this time from a maternitywear shop - this delightful pub features a log burner, cellar bar and outdoor courtyard, and well kept beers from Vocation, Wensleydale, Daleside and Big Trip breweries. From here you can see the Starling Independent Beer & Coffee House, another recent addition to the scene having launched
in 2016, it is contemporary in style, unashamedly foody and renowned for its pizzas, but with ten craft keg lines and 3 cask ales from Kirkstall, Taylors, North and Roosters. The upstairs drinking area has recently extended into the former bank next door, though we chose the traditional bar stools propping up the main bar. We bypassed the Foundry Project, to get to the ultra quirky Major Tom’s Social, another card-only establishmentwhich features a downstairs retro shop, and interesting artefacts
is made with cobble loaves from the famous Betty’s Tea Rooms in the town. Owner Jim Mossman explained how ‘Cold Bath’, named after a local road, is an offshoot of Wold Top Brewery, housed in farm buildings near Driffield. Live music features each weekend in the neighbouring function room, which is soon to be knocked through to form a much larger drinking area. We delayed until 2pm so we could include the

including a space man and traditional revolving ‘blackboard’ which reminded me of my schooldays. We were yet to find a disappointing beer and this place kept with the quality with well kept beers from Marble, Chevin and Harrogate along with the permanent Turning Point ale. The bar has recently been extended into a neighbouring record store. Food was provided by JD Wetherspoon’s Winter Gardens, housed in a part of the original
Royal Baths building andsurely one of their most opulent outlets with a colonnade entrance and suitably impressive architecture and décorthroughout.
Hales Bar on Crescent Rd is a beautiful example of an unspoilt traditional 18th Century boozer, with subdued gas lighting, comfortable leather seating and wooden casks displayed behind the bar. Reputedly the oldest pub in the town, the Georgian style Vaults Room features exposed beams and an open fire. Beer quality is known to be changeable but we found the Kirkstall, Taylors and Daleside beers in good form. Moving uphill past ‘Five Shillings Brasserie’, the Old Bell provided a familiar sight as one i’ve visited on a number of accasions, and again did not disappoint with a pleasant drinking environment with Boltmaker, Kirkstall and five further beers plus a cider. Prices here are very reasonable for the area, at £3.85 to £4.30. The pub is
renowned for its food quality and I was surprised to see beer mats from the Isle of Man based Okell’s brewery, but it appears the pub is part of the Market Town Taverns group – prolific in this part of the world and with links to Okell’s.
Just around the corner, the Fat Badger is the public bar of the smart White Hart Hotel, but it’s taken on a life of its own with separate entrance, and plenty of character including a superb Victorian bar back. There are 8 handpumps with mostly Yorkshire ales at sensible prices. Back across the roundabout, passing the posh Montpellier Quarter we looked in on the Montpellier, another smart yet traditional pub with beers from Taylors, Theakstons and

Bradfield. Expect to pay over £5 for your pint here, so with the clock ticking we hurried off up the hill back towards the station to the Blues Bar – a bustling town centre bar with four changing beers and daily live music. It appears the seating booths in the upstairs tapas restaurant are equipped with TV monitors whereby you can watch the bands while you eat! The Alexandra is a large and imposing Grade II listed former spa – not as ornate inside as some of the other pubs, but tastefully done up with dark grey walls embellished with old prints and plenty of dark woodwork. Again there’s a choice of well kept ales including the permanent St Austell ales. If time
allows, just before the station another recent addition is Husk, which started life as a bottle shop before moving to larger premises across the square from the station. Ten craft taps provide beers from Arbor, Burnt
