directors cut Bluesfest Director Peter Noble talks about the evolution of Bluesfest. By Martin Jones When we catch up with Peter Noble this year, he’s in the USA having just attended the Pollstar Awards, where Bluesfest was nominated for the Best International Festival Award for the second time. For Bluesfest to be up there rubbing shoulders with the likes of Glastonbury, Reading, Montreux Jazz Festival, etc, is testament to how far the Festival has come. With Bluesfest celebrating its 25th Anniversary in 2014 (April 17-21, get your pre-sale tickets now!) it’s interesting times for the Festival. Byron Bay and Bluesfest have grown up together over the past 24 years, surviving cyclones, fluctuations in the economy, political turmoil and growing pains hand-in-hand. You could argue that when the whaling and abattoir industries left Byron Bay, the arts played a significant role in the town’s rebirth, the Arts Factory and Bluesfest (or East Coast Blues Festival as it was then known) helping to shape Byron’s identity as a haven for artists. These days ask any international musician or music fan what they know about Byron Bay and the first thing they’ll mention is Bluesfest! Many feel that Byron’s artistic identity has been neglected, recently, in the name of “progress” or “commerce.” When Byron Council floated its live music restricting

Events Policy last year, Peter Noble rallied a strident cry of public opposition, demonstrating that the town’s artistic heart still beats strongly. The State Government overruled the policy. “It just felt to me like a place where artists would live naturally, or people who are involved or interested in the arts,” Peter recalls what originally attracted him to Byron Bay. “And I think that’s become even truer over the years.” So Byron Bay has remained the home of Bluesfest since its inception back in 1990, finally coming to rest on its permanent, purpose-built site in Tyagarah. The Festival’s growth has been gradual and organic, Peter exercising remarkable patience in implementing long-term plans. With his own site and a line-up this year that eclipses anything the Festival has yet delivered, surely Peter must be approaching his ideal for Bluesfest. “Every time I think it’s getting close to my ideal, my ideal changes,” he laughs. “If you’d asked me ten years ago would I be doing Roger Hodgson or Jon Anderson from Yes, I probably would have given you a rather quizzical look. That’s just something I’ve started doing in the last couple of years… I just don’t know what’s going to happen with Bluesfest. It’s just something I go with and I book

it as I see that it should be. This year a lot of good talent has come our way so we haven’t had to chase it as hard as we have done in some years.” “So what are we nowdays? I don’t know,” he muses. “People go, ‘Oh, well you’re not a blues fest!’ Yeah, so what (laughs)! We’re definitely a music festival, and it’s all about music.” Yes, the Blues Police have been hot on Noble’s tail for some time now, bemoaning the loss of the more purist blues approach to the event’s early days. Peter has had as much experience with blues music as anyone in the country, as our forty-minute discussion on the current state of blues, part of which you can read in this month’s Rhythms cover story, demonstrates. With the number of original post-war blues founders dwindling, Peter admits that, “there is less blues around.” He recalls first falling in love with the blues through the English players when not many of the original American blues artists were touring a great deal. He fondly remembers the great reception he got to touring the likes of Junior Wells and Johnny Copeland in this country, and of course there was the Legends Of The Mississippi Delta Tour in the early ‘90s featuring the likes of Big Jack Johnson,

Here’s another band who really has a message and is on fire with it. “Music Maker are for all the people who want to hear the real blues, and by that I mean people playing blues from their culture. I don’t think that should be missed. Playing For Change is another great one. They are a blend of the world’s best street musicians. and when touring SOJA

When we suggested Playing For Change to Robert Plant for Australian supports, there was nobody else he wanted for his main shows. “The Canadian band Current Swell, are also brilliant. I caught them at Bigsound and was blown away. Then there is Genevieve Chadwick. I don’t know what’s in the water around Moruya area but Kim Churchill’s been getting in my ear about her and she’s fantastic! “I am sure Ben Caplan is going to really impress a whole lot of people!

“Then there is Shuggie Otis of course. It’s the return of Shuggie Shuggie Otis Otis. If you’re a blues fan that’s somebody you should know about. We all went, ‘Where did Shuggie go?’ Having Allen Toussaint come – that’s an absolute mind blower for me to present. Bettye LaVette – people were saying she was the best artist to play Bluesfest last year. “Cyril Neville and Devon Allman’s new band, the Royal Southern Brotherhood, that’s going to be incredible. Allen Stone, there’s a very talented new artist coming up! Now these are just a few of the artists that I’d be advising not to miss!”

welcome! So the best thing I can do is say ‘thank you’ to our brilliant Bluesfest audience. Because they’re part of the reason why everyone wants to play Bluesfest. You can’t buy that audience. What great music fans!”

The BIG Bluesfest Family! Frank Frost, Sam Carr, Lonnie Pitchford and RL Burnside before anybody outside of Mississippi had ever heard of him. “And from those tours way back, through to today I always want to have a space at Bluesfest for players like that, for those who are still around,” says Peter, pointing out the Music Maker Revue as an example. “When you get down to the blues, it’s great that people keep finding another way of doing it. But the opportunities to see those original people are becoming rarer and rarer and are something to be savoured.” Then there is the next generation of elders coming along; people like Taj Mahal, Robert Cray and the long-lost Shuggie Otis. And a new generation following them. “But you can still hear it in Ben Harper, you can hear the blues,” Noble reasons. “Ben Harper influenced all those Australian artists so much. Like Xavier Rudd and [John] Butler and so many

others... they’ve got their little bit of blues out of that, even if they don’t realise it. And I guess the blues had to finally mutate and it’s not all about 12bar anymore, although it can be too.” Indeed, ever since Gill Scott Heron and Ben Harper demonstrated how successfully the Festival could embrace quality music from the margins of the blues back in 1996, Noble has cultivated a far broader vision for Bluesfest, welcoming all forms of the music he cherishes as “roots” – from blues to country to gospel to zydeco to Cajun to African to reggae to folk. But Bluesfest devotees have proven more than willing to come along for the ride and in the process the Festival has nurtured an open-minded audience engaged with the thrill of discovery. “That’s just it!” Peter agrees. “And the audiences are what it’s all about. Plus the fact that they’re there lifting the artists, makes the artists want to play better.

Last year’s Bluesfest was once again successful at the NSW Tourism Awards, taking out a Silver Award for Major Festivals and Events. This is another trophy for the Bluesfest cabinet, which is now crowded with awards, and deservedly so. It is a fantastic event that people from all over Australia and from overseas come to enjoy each year. It is a credit to Peter Noble and his team, who do a magnificent job of putting on an extremely professional and well-organised event. For this reason, it does enormous good for our local economy and tourism industry. This year’s lineup looks amazing and my wife and I are very much looking forward to once again enjoying the great music and atmosphere that it is synonymous with Bluesfest. I hope everyone enjoys this year’s Bluesfest as much as we always do.

“Going back through the watershed years, like when Ben Harper first played… even when Jack Johnson first played was a pretty special year. I don’t know what this year’s gonna be. Is it gonna be the year Manu Chao played? I don’t know, there are so many amazing artists. Or maybe Bluesfest is at the point where no one artist can stick out so much nowdays ‘cause there’s so many. And that’s getting back to the beginning of what you asked: is it getting to where I want it to be? Well, I guess maybe that’s it – that there’s so many great artists who want to play Bluesfest now. That is the realisation of a dream.” “But it’s certainly a dream that I don’t intend to walk away from,” Peter concludes, looking to the future. “The site’s not finished, although we’re doing more every year. We’re going to be launching the Boomerang Indigenous Festival at Bluesfest this year and there’s so many things to do still. I just thank god that I’m getting up towards middlesixties and I’m still so into it. And if it wasn’t for all those people supporting me, then I wouldn’t be doing it either. So thank you.”

For others, it has become an annual Easter pilgrimage. Regardless of whether it is your first or twenty-first, as soon as you walk through the gates and into a tent, it becomes all about the music. Our shire has been built on a creative, welcoming, active and eclectic community; it was natural that Bluesfest would be born here. We love our festival that started little and are very proud to watch it become large. I hope everyone has a great time and respects each other, both inside the festival and throughout the Shire.

“Pitch perfect powerhouse” – USA Today. Introducing America’s latest soul sensation, Allen Stone. This 25-year-old has drawn comparisons to Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Prince, Donny Hathaway and Bill Withers (The New York Times). The self-proclaimed “hippy with soul” is the son of a preacher man, and like many soul singers he got his start in church. Allen’s first national TV appearance on Conan came after the music booker saw a YouTube video of Allen performing in his mother’s living room. Stone’s self-released album, Last To Speak (2010), got him signed to ATO for the release of his new self-titled album.

It’s been a long time between drinks for the Beasts Of Bourbon. The Beasts are making their Bluesfest debut with their incendiary blues-based pub rock punk. Forming in Sydney in 1983, the band hit the ground running with a chart-topping debut, The Axeman’s Jazz, and then redefined the rules of rock ‘n’ roll, surviving numerous break-ups and lineup changes to produce a further six cracking albums. Not only is the Bluesfest favourite coming to the Festival with his band and Charlie Musselwhite, he is also performing a special solo and acoustic show, following on from his first ever solo acoustic Australian tour in 2012 – as he told Rhythms at the time, “It’s as much fun as I’ve ever had playing music.” A Bluesfest discovery, Ben Harper set the roots music world alight when he debuted at the festival back in 1996, stunning audiences with his trademark Weissenborn guitar, passionate vocals and timeless songwriting. “As long as we have that insatiable quest for knowledge, that’s a way of staying vital” – Brian Ritchie Featuring members of Midnight Oil, The Violent Femmes and Hunters & Collectors, Australia’s most innovative and powerful surf rock band, The Break, consists of Rob Hirst, Jim Moginie, Martin Rotsey, Brian Ritchie and Jack Howard. The Break explore new horizons and obscure influences whilst tipping the occasional nod to ‘60s legends such as Ennio Morricone, Joe Meek, Link Wray and Dick Dale as well as San Francisco’s psychedelic Mermen with whom Ritchie has played on numerous occasions. As well as introducing audiences to their new album, Space Farm, this Easter, The Break will double as backing band to Rodriguez.

Brother Fox Winners of last year’s Bluesfest Busking competition, Brother Fox describe themselves as, “an experiment in lifestyle design. With a high-energy folk/ roost infusion, our sole purpose is to amplify your world – to reconnect you with this very moment, the right now, your present and our gift.” Brother Fox are setting their sights firmly on the future with a new EP and a, “play as many shows as possible” attitude. 2012 saw the band building a solid schedule of support shows including Jinja Safari’s Rural Youth Indent Tour.

ARTIST PROFILES Chris Isaak

It’s almost unbelievable that iconic American rocker/heartthrob Chris Isaak has never played Bluesfest before. A dedicated devotee of seminal rock artists like Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis, Isaak has stamped his own charisma on a classic sound with chart-topping hits like ‘Wicked Game’, ‘Baby Did A Bad Bad Thing’ and ‘Somebody’s Crying’. For his latest album, Beyond The Sun, Isaak returned directly to the source of that inspiration, Sun Studios in Memphis. As Isaak testifies, “Without Sam [Phillips] and Sun Studio, I don’t think we would have rock ‘n’ roll.”

Counting Crows

Multi-Platinum American rock band Counting Crows are one of the most soulful and recognisable bands of the past two decades. With Grammy and Oscar nominations, over twenty million albums sold worldwide, eight Top 5 singles, and three records having broken the Top 5 on the Billboard 200 – not to mention multiple live albums and soundtrack appearances – Counting Crows’ success dates back to their 1993 debut release August And Everything After and the hit single ‘Mr. Jones’. In 2012 Counting Crows released their first album in over four years. Titled Underwater Sunshine (Or What We Did On Our Summer Vacation), the album is a collection of 15 interpretations of their favourite tunes including tracks by Bob Dylan, Gram Parson and Teenage Fanclub to name a few. How do you describe Damien Dempsey’s music to someone who hasn’t yet been exposed to it? Take some reggae, fuse it with traditional Irish music, add in rock and folk and put it all through a grounded, working class, worldly yet caring consciousness, and you’re almost there. Damien Dempsey is one of the biggest acts to come out of Ireland in recent years. His latest album, Almighty Love (2012), was produced by long-term collaborator John Reynolds and features Sinéad O’Connor, one of the greatest voices of her generation. Extraordinarily gifted, Damien is set to wow the crowd with yet another soulful and spirited live performance.

Following on from Going Out In Style, their powerful concept album about Irish immigrant, Cornelius Larkin, the band arrives at Bluesfest armed with a brand new album, Signed And Sealed In Blood.

“The people’s prince of punk poetry” – NME. Frank Turner is another Bluesfest first timer. He may have started off as the voice of post-hardcore band Million Dead, but his primarily acoustic guitarbased brand of folk songwriting, catchy melodies and punk passion has taken off in a big way. With the successful release of his hand-picked 15-song compilation, Last Minute And Lost Evenings in 2012, plus his new record, Tape Deck Heart, set for release this April, things are only going onwards and upwards. And it only takes one listen to understand why.

Arguably one of the greatest jazz and funk trombonists – the man James Brown called on for his funky horn hits; instrumental in creating the signature sounds of James Brown, Parliament-Funkadelic and Bootsy’s Rubber Band – Fred Wesley is one of the most important musicians in soul music. From his work in the Oscar-winning phenomenon Once with the Academy Awardwinning ‘Falling Slowly’, to his haunting collaborations with Markéta Irglová in The Swell Season, Hansard’s unwavering commitment to song has seen him traverse a thirty-year career in the far reaches of folk storytelling. His debut solo album, Rhythm And Repose (2012), has been regarded as his best work so far, entrenched in the rich, poetic history of his native Ireland and the melodic mastery of Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen.

One of the godfathers of Americana music, Kane is founder of the Dead Reckoning Record label. Scottish/Canadian folk artist David Francey has earned multiple Juno and Canadian Folk Music Awards over an eight-album career. Kieran’s son Lucas Kane plays drums and guitar, and is the third limb to their threepart harmonies. They arrive at Bluesfest armed with a brand new album, recorded in Australia during their last tour.

Last time ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro played Bluesfest, a buzz swept through the festival about the young Hawaiian. It’s rare for a young musician to earn comparisons to Jimi Hendrix and Miles Davis. It’s even harder to find an artist who has entirely redefined an instrument by his early thirties. But Shimabukuro (she-ma-boo-koo-row) and his uke effortlessly mix jazz, rock, classical, traditional Hawaiian music and folk, creating a sound that’s technically masterful, emotionally powerful and utterly unique.

Over the course of 40 years and 20 critically acclaimed albums, Joan Armatrading has forged an uncompromising career. Including classics like ‘Love And Affection’, ‘Show Some Emotion’, and ‘Drop The Pilot’, her canon of work has brought her three Grammy nominations, two Brit nominations, a debut at Number One in the Billboard Blues chart, a highly coveted Ivor Novello Award, and a Gold Badge Award. Hailing from the NSW Central Coast, Karise was the first winner of The Voice Australia with a soulful voice that is well beyond her 19 years. “[A] rootsy brand of rock ‘n’ roll that lands somewhere between Bruce Springsteen and Joe Strummer” – The Daily Telegraph. Inspired by working-class struggle and punk rock ethics, King Cannons formed when singer Luke Yeoward met guitarist Rob Ting and bass player Jonno Smith at a screening of a Joe Strummer documentary. Swelling to a six-piece, the band moved into a Melbourne house to write their own chapter in post-punk, producing a self-titled EP in 2010, and last year realising the vision in the Tom Larkin (Shihad) produced album, The Brightest Light.

“Have you heard of Kitty Daisy & Lewis? They’re f***ing amazing” – Chris Martin (Coldplay) This London trio of siblings is one act you have to see this Bluesfest. Their music is a genre bending mix of dirty R’n’B and blues, whiskey-soaked country, haunting jungle drums, ska and gospel fever with a punch in the face by Daisy’s hard beat boxing. Leonardo’s Bride

A lot of memories will flow through the crowd when the original lineup of Leonardo’s Bride returns to the stage for two exclusive performances. In late 2000, Leonardo’s Bride performed a concert in Sydney’s Domain to over 80,000 people. A few months later the group called it quits; there were no farewell shows or explanations. From their early DIY days of handdrawn gig posters and indie EPs, Leonardo’s Bride went on to become one of Australia’s most loved bands, touring internationally and domestically for over a decade. Their signature hit, ‘Even When I’m Sleeping’, was voted one of APRA’s Top 30 Australian Songs of All Time.

Lil’ Fi is one of Australia’s most original roots music blues divas. A brassy entertainer with a unique songwriting style, she’s a retro-punk visionary with a heart too big not to be shared. Lucky Oceans described her as, “An uncommonly convincing Blues-Mama,” and Blues legend BB King compared her to Bonnie Raitt when she received a standing ovation after she warmed the stage for him. Camping:

Those who will be staying at Bluesfest onsite in the beautiful green campgrounds need their camping ticket as well as Festival ticket to gain entry. Three day/night, as well as overnight campers, can only stay on the date the ticket stipulates. Not the night before or after. Please: No open fires No swimming in dams Footware is compulsory Please supervise children at all times Please comply with the 8km/hr speed limit. Please be aware that Bluesfest camp grounds are not powered, though you can use a small generator that will need to be turned off after midnight for the sanity of your fellow campers.

Is open from 6:30am for a hot breakfast, great coffee and a chance to pick up camping supplies you may have forgotten. See the map on page 33.

The environment:

Tyagarah is home to many native animals that need to be catered for to ensure their habitat and safety is paramount. Please respect their space should you encounter them, do not approach or touch, and let a staff member know of the location so all precautions can be taken for both the animal and patron. As you will see, Tyagarah has an abundance of fauna on the grounds, please dispose of all your rubbish items thoughtfully, and help us preserve this magical home of Bluesfest.

After 18 years as frontman of legendary Australian outfit Hunters and Collectors, Mark Seymour has continued to build a formidable solo career, spanning seven studio albums 47% of and two live releases. For his latest project, Seymour has Bluesfest teamed up with Cameron McKenzie, John Favaro and patrons were Peter Maslen to create a sound Stephen Cummings female, and 53% were describes as, “Richard Clapton meets Jackson Browne male (2012) at a car park above a beach with breaking surf.” Mark Seymour and The Undertow are coming to Bluesfest armed with their brand new album, Seventh Heaven Club.

Mason Rack Band After their high impact, “revealing” performance last year (the band’s finale saw them dropping their strides!), Bluesfest welcome back the Mason Rack Band. The band’s influences include flashes of Tom Waits and Muddy Waters with roots extending to Ben Harper. Throw in a slide guitar, raspy vocals, a rocking bluesy bass, massive drum percussion and the result is a spectacular kaleidoscope of musical genres. The brother and sister duo hailing from Cairns draw on alt. country and folk influences and use honeyed vocal harmonies with mandolin and violin driven instrumentals to deliver beautiful music. The McMenamins have toured the States twice in the last six months and secured a strong local following with their three albums, including the latest, Long Time Gone.

ARTIST PROFILES Paul Simon

Widely regarded as one of the most successful and prolific songwriters of the latter half of the 20th century, Simon has consistently penned mature, literate songs with an astute political and social conscience. In the early 1960s, the folk revival swept New York and a new breed of singers and songwriters introduced a new approach to the craft of creating tunes – at the forefront was Paul Simon, creating immortal songs like ‘The Sound Of Silence’ and ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’. Simon continued to expand his musical palette, introducing world music to the mainstream with his most career-defining release, Graceland. Since then, his 12 Grammy Awards and two Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame inductions (as Simon and Garfunkel and as a solo artist) have led to his listing in Time Magazine’s 100 People Who Shape Our UP CLOSE World. His latest release, So Beautiful Or So What, & is a beautifully crafted album of unique, carefully PERSONAL constructed songs still rich in discovery. “I’m more Come to the Rhythms interested in what I discover, than what I invent,” Artist Q&A sessions at the Cavanbah says Simon. “You don’t possess it. You can’t control Stage. it or dictate to it. You’re just waiting. Waiting... for the show to begin.” And so are we.

Playing For Change Playing For Change is a movement founded by American producer Mark Johnson to inspire, connect and bring peace to the world through music. The Playing For Change Band includes nine of the most incredible musicians from across four continents including legendary New Orleans street musician Grandpa Elliott who sings alongside Clarence Bekker (Netherlands), Titi Tsira (South Africa), Tula (Isreal), Jason Tamba and Mermans Mosengo (Congo), as well as Peter Bunetta (USA) on drums, Louis Mhlanga (Zimbabwe) on lead guitar, Roberto Luti (Italy) on steel guitar, Orbe Oritz (Cuba) on bass and Tom Canning (USA) on keys. The Robert Cray Band It’s been seven long years since Robert Cray has toured Australia, but he and his long-serving band still shred the blues, like never before. The ‘Strong Persuader’s career has spanned 35 years and he’s still creating, releasing his 16th album, Nothing But Love, last year. Robert Plant, the legendary singer of Led Zeppelin, will be making his long awaited Bluesfest debut this Easter with his Sensational Space Shifters. One of the most timeless and significant voices in the history of rock, Plant was voted as The Best Lead Singer Of All Time by the Rolling Stone readers’ poll. From 1967’s Band of Joy and The New Yardbirds, Led Zeppelin emerged as one of the greatest rock bands of all time. Plant’s solo career has been as eclectic as it has successful, producing albums and recording with The Honeydrippers, Priory of Brion, Strange Sensation, Alison Krauss and the Grammy nominated Band of Joy. Though his more commercial albums like The Joker, Abracadabra and Fly Like An Eagle have sold in the tens of millions, Steve Miller was deeply influenced by his father’s friendship with Les Paul and T-Bone Walker and early in his career spent time playing blues with the likes of Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf and Buddy Guy. Two-time Grammy-winning singer, composer, producer, world-class musical collaborator, musicians’ advocate, world traveller, fisherman and cigar aficionado Taj Mahal has done more than just about anybody else to broaden and enliven the scope of blues music over the past fifty years. In celebration of his epic career, he has released Taj Mahal – The Complete Columbia Albums Collection, spanning everything from Afro-Caribbean blues, folk/ world/blues, hula blues, folk/funk, and a host of other hyphenations he has become admired for. Tav Falco is a Southern provocateur, grifting his audience with the ol’ song and dance act before shuffling out the back door with a wink and a nod. Part music, part theatre performance, part classic art, Tav Falco and The Panther Burns take you on a soulful journey of Memphis swamp and blues/psychobilly. Inspiring both The Cramps and The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, since the mid-‘70s Falco has made his mark not only in music, but across all art forms, including the big screen, and as a published author.

Be sure to be front and centre when wife and husband Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks return with their almighty group of soul/blues warriors this Easter. A member of both The Allman Brothers and Eric Clapton’s band, Derek Trucks is the youngest musician to make Rolling Stone’s Top 100 Guitarists of All Time list. Susan Tedeschi is no slouch on the guitar either and her astounding voice brings comparisons to the all-time soul/gospel greats. Joining forces, the duo earned a Grammy with their 2011 debut, Revelator and their recent live album, Everybody’s Talkin’, proves that they are one of the best live bands in the world today. This year they bring their incredible horn section to Bluesfest for the first time!

“An atomic bomb in lipstick. The Queen of Rockabilly” - Bob Dylan. We welcome rockabilly royalty, Wanda Jackson, who first toured in 1955 sharing a bill with none other than Elvis Presley. In 2009, Wanda became the only woman inducted into the Rockabilly and Rock ‘n’ Roll Halls of Fame (recommended by Dylan, Costello and Springsteen). Throughout Wanda’s fifty-plus-year music career, she has remained relevant and an inspiration to the newcomers of the industry; her most recent albums being collaborations with Jack White (The Party Ain’t Over, 2011) and Justin Townes Earle (Unfinished Business, 2012).

ARTIST PROFILES Ward’s Xpress

Ross Ward first appeared at Bluesfest back in ‘95 with the late Wiley Reed where the idea for the band Ward’s Xpress was originally conceived, and has since performed at nine Bluesfests. In March 2012, Ward’s Xpress released the Five Lanes CD, which went straight to Number One on the Australian Blues & Roots Most Played chart. Witness them play an original and organic mix of blues, rock, funk and soul, with a tinge of jazz and world music styles.

Once in a blue moon, you find a band that can effortlessly transfix people from all walks of life. Almost twenty years of touring, eight albums and two Grammy Awards have proven this constantly evolving band are one of the best live acts around. Just ask anyone who saw their astonishing 2008 Bluesfest shows. Formed by singer-songwriter Jeff Tweedy and bassist John Stirratt from the ashes of Uncle Tupelo in 1994, Wilco’s lineup has evolved with its sound, until reaching its current incarnation in 2004, with avant-garde guitarist Nels Cline and phenomenal drummer Glenn Kotche helping to take the band to a whole new level, covering a huge scope of musical styles. The band’s latest album, The Whole Love, is a perfect case in point, ranging from the dark electro-rock of ‘Art Of Almost’ to the impossibly graceful and organic ‘One Sunday Morning’. “We maintain a pretty big repertoire at this point,” Tweedy remarked on bringing The Whole Love songs to Australia

for the first time. “So I expect to be playing a lot of stuff that people maybe haven’t heard us play.” And with Tweedy producing a second Mavis Staples record, keep your fingers crossed for some on stage collaboration this Bluesfest.

A man armed only with a banjo and a bass drum can be a formidable force, his two-instrument attack along with his honest, powerful voice leaves no doubt that he will be heard. American folk troubadour William Elliott Whitmore will be making his Bluesfest début with his latest record, Field Songs. Learning to perform through playing bluegrass and blues/folk protest music in between back-to-back sets of hardcore bands, Whitmore is an unconventional artist with the ability to leave a sea of strangers completely stunned to silence with the passion and power of his voice.

Australia’s favourite country/rock/bluegrass outfit, The Wilson Pickers, are pleased to announce the triumphant return of founding picker, Danny Widdicombe. Danny returns to the band after successful treatment for a second bout of leukemia. They also welcome back with open arms banjo player Ben Salter who has returned to the band after a short hiatus to work on his solo album. The good news just keeps on coming! The band will also be returning to the studio early next year to record their third album. So join them at Bluesfest for a celebratory sing-along.

Australia’s own Xavier Rudd is a standout Bluesfest favourite, transfixing the crowd with his performances on his array of guitars, didgeridoos, stomp boxes and percussion. Since his debut album, To Let, in 2002, Xavier has reintroduced a lot of Australians to the sounds and stories of the land’s original owners, while introducing the rest of the world to an entirely new sound altogether. Xavier’s latest effort, Spirit Bird, has produced his highest selling single to date, ‘Follow The Sun’, which is the essence of Xavier’s spiritual connection to this world.

All the way from Georgia, USA, country/rock seven-piece, The Zac Brown Band come to Bluesfest armed with a reputation for gigantic live shows and a list of awards and chart successes that would make a band triple their age green with envy. With two Grammy Awards already in the trophy cabinet, the band just earned a third for Best Country Album for Uncaged, after it debuted at Number One on the Billboard 200.

BLUESFEST BUSKING COMP Embrace the opportunity to see a host of talented up and coming musicians who have travelled from across Australia for the prospect of showcasing their talent during the Bluesfest celebrations.

The winner of the annual Bluesfest Busking comp will open the APRA Stage on Monday at 12pm. The Busking Tent at the festival will stage an array of brilliant musicians throughout the Festival, check out the daily playing schedule. Last year’s humbly deserving winners Brother Fox are on the bill for 2013 opening the Cavanbah stage on Saturday and again on Monday at 12pm.
