FROM THE EDITOR Hectic schedule? Due projects and papers? Overwhelmed and still struggling to make food in a world where you have to juggle studies, work, social life and more? We all struggle but we don’t have to sacrifice our health for that. There are days when we barely have time to eat and all we do is work and study. We might find it easier and quicker to ping the microwave or eat take-out foods. However stress, all nighters missed meals and quick food fixes will atcually have an effect on our ability to concentrate. Therefore we still have to be careful with our food choices on these periods. DeskFast is my personal food magazine dedicated to students who don’t have the luxury of time to buy or prepare healthy food. Through research and stories from my collegues I put together tips and facts on food choices that really save time, without compromise. P.S. Deskfast is a popularized term referring to meals, particularly breakfast eaten on a desk or while working. This is most common to students who are running late for class and when reviewing or studying for exams.

HELL WEEK FOOD 101 Finals week or also known as hell week: the 7 or more stressful days for all college and university students. It’s the time when all that matters for students are grades, grades and more grades. A common mistake many students make during this period is to eat poorly and unhealthily because of time constraint to buy or make normal meals. However, this is not only harmful to health but can also badly affect your studying. So here are are some of my favorite food that are readily available around campus, easy to eat, and provide important nutrients to fuel your body and your brain duing hell weeks.

RICE / NOODLE MIX Keep your energy levels up by eatingfood rich in carbohydrates and protein. Also dont forget the vegies. All of this can be eaten together in dishes such as rice mix and noodle mix. Aside from they are healthy, they are fast and easy to cook, and a lot of restaurants offer them for delivery. (Rice in a box, Wok this way etc.) But this kind of food might be pretty messy to eat; and sure you don’t want to have food particles on your laptop or reviewers. So here are some tips on how to eat them conveniently.
1.
EAT IN BOWLS
An easy way to eat rice mix or other similar food is eating them in bowls. Bowl food is relaxed eating. Bowls provide a deep containment preventing food from spilling. You can put together or simply toss a few fresh ingredients in a bowl without all the mess. Plus bowls are easy to handle with one hand and easy to carry around. All that remains is to lift your spoon and eat with pleasure.
2.
KEEP IT DRY
It doesn’t mean that when their in bowls they are already spill proof so as much as possible dont cook or order saucy or soup based unless you are willing to risk. Eating while working is really accident prone and you don’t want your papers to be soaked with soup. So if you want a hot soup, take it after your done with your work and you’re away from your desk. Just to be sure! OCTOBER 2013 DESKFAST 5
CHIPS BUT NO JUNK CHIPS
1.
You may opt for quick finger snacks like potato chips while studying. They are undeniably delicious, but but they’re often packed with a wide range of chemicals that might affect your body and performance. Snacks like peanuts, cashews, popcorn are healthier and pack more of a nutritients.
NO CHEESY & OILY FINGERS
Eating finger food like chips is quite convenient but remember finger stains are also really pain in the ass. If you’re careless you might leave “cheese finger prints” on your keyborad or on your reading materials. So when eating quick snacks avoid those with strong colors like cheese flavorings or always have a tissue around.
HEALTHY SUGARS Sugary foods like desserts can lead to blood sugar spikes followed by drops leaving us unable to focus. Of course we cant avoid our cravings, so instead of candy bars and creams, opt for dark chocolates and fruits. Study shows dark chocolate is antioxidantrich and improves focus andconcentration. Fruit contains natural sugars. Plus fruits like apple and banana are easy to carry around.
1.
KEEP COOL, NO CRUMBLE, NO DRIP
When eating dark chocolates and fruits make sure they don’t crumble and drip on your papers or laptop. Keep them cool so they wont melt. It would be better if you place them on a bowl or plate to save you from wet marks on your table. Also beware of ants. 6 DESKFAST OCTOBER 2013
SANDWICH FILLED Eat a sandwich filled with vegetables and a source of protein like chicken or beef. If you can’t make it yourself get one at a sandwich shop like Quiznos or Subway. Opt for sandwiches on whole wheat or whole grain because they contain Vitamin B6 that could boost brain function.
1.
ONE HAND READY
If you plan on studying on your way to school, one handed food like sandwiches are really convenient. So when making sandwiches or wraps make sure you make it small enough for your hand and properly wrapped. NOTE: Do not study while driving.
2.
KEEP IT FLAT
You might think of making a really full and tall sandwich, yes they are good and healthy but it could lead to a disaster. Tall sandwiches are difficult to bite on, half of your filling would probably fall on your table or if unfornate on your papers. So if you want a sandwich, dont make a jaw breaker one, make them small and thin enough to nibble on.
WATER POWER I don’t drink coffee so I might sound bias but actually water would actually keep your energy levels higher. Caffeine should be kept to a minimum since it could make you jittery. Stay well-hydrated while studying. Dehydration can lead to fatigue and lack of ability to focus. But be caredul not to spill some on your work.
one cup of coffee is all that it takes to help students focus when wanting to study.
