Microsoft Office Programs

Adobe Photoshop & InDesign

(Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Paint, Google, Earth, Internet Explorer etc.)

All graphic presentations have been done on Photoshop and InDesign. I got introduced to Photoshop during the early stages of studies where architectural drawings and images were rendered on Photoshop and placed into Indesign. The time spent in practice refined my presentation skills as I had to compile several presentations and graphic renderings for clients and other stakeholders.

AutoCAD During the last two years in practice, all drafting activities were executed on AutoCAD. I am at ease in documenting construction drawings, resolving complex details and doing large-scale urban designs on this software. Revit My thesis project was executed on Revit. On this software I translated concepts into building elements and resolved complex tectonic details. I also exported these models for rendering purposes.

SketchUp This software has been useful in practice for conceptual modelling and resolving construction details. Urban design layouts are also built on this software where layout parameters are translated into spatial solutions.

Cape Town

My second year of practice I had the privilege of joining Rudi Botha and his partner, Henri Comrie at Urba architects & urban designers. Urba is a dynamic design-driven practice with a special focus on architecture and urban design. Here I was mainly involved in urban design projects that are located on the outskirts of Cape Town. It was required of me to do conceptual drawings, model large scale layouts and engage with clients in meetings and on site. Other tasks included assisting with architectural construction drawings. During my time at Urba I developed a sense for contextual design and resolving problems on a larger urban scale which I believe will assist my design approach for the future.

A large portion of my time period at Urba was spent on urban design. My involvement included detailed site analysis, conceptual design, graphic presentation, 3D computer modelling and 2D layout drawings. Urban design as a design principle has been embedded into my design approach as I learnt how design intervention influences its context on a larger scale. I believe that this experience contributes to my architectural skills and hope to develop and apply this skill in future projects. Durbanville Inner Valley

During my engagement with architectural projects, I was responsible for resolving complex details both on a small and large scale. Pragmatic thinking was combined with aesthetic design methods in order to complete given tasks. Structural, fenestration and furniture details formed part of my responsibility.

Graphic presentation is considered a high priority at Urba architects and urban designers. Together with compiling graphic presentations for clients, I also received the task of revising the company’s existing graphic images for their website. This involved rerendering existing layout plans and generating new 3D renders. Where I had to focus on generating graphics on a realistic level, I also had to maintain an overall style and palette in order to give Urba’s website a concise appearance. This experience developed my skill in crafting aesthetic architectural images that I hope to apply in the future. House Seelug

Candidate Architect Cape Town

My first year in practice I had the privilege of working under the mentorship of Etienne Britz, now currently an associate at Urba. Boukuns focuses on innovative design responding considerately to its surrounding context. Projects executed by Boukuns involved commercial, retail, housing and residential architecture. Being a small firm, I was exposed to a large scope of responsibilities and procedures which gave me the necessary exposure coming from university. For the first time I witnessed projects from conceptual phase to final completion which made me realize how much I enjoy architectural practice and want to pursue my career as an architect. Working at Boukuns was a great entry experience and has contributed to my understanding of architecture.

Council submissions was part of my responsibility at Boukuns as I had to have my finger on the approval process at all times. Drawing up council drawings not only improved my technical and design skills, but also informed me of the necessary regulations and conventions that is connected to designing a building. During this phase of the projects I was involved in, I was confronted with problems arising from the design process and had to learn how to resolve them through pragmatic thinking. Submitting the drawings myself, I had to deal with the formalities and discuss designs with the authorities. Being so closely part of this process gave me a fundamental understanding of the necessary requirements a design has to comply with.

At Boukuns I received the task to manage a construction project of renovations done to a heritage house in Claremont. The scope of works included the following: Council drawings & submission. Tender drawings. Site meetings with client, contractor & engineer. Construction drawings. Project- and time management. Dispute resolutions and mediation between client and contractor. Ongoing meetings and communication with client. Complex design resolutions due to the nature of a heritage project. Independent decision making. This experience gave me a good idea of the formalities regarding construction. It also improved my tactile understanding of architecture giving me confidence to determine the outcome when designing a building.

c o n s t r u c t i o n d r a w i n g s

Drawings for construction purposes took up the largest part of my time at Boukuns. I was involved in several projects that required detailed construction drawings. This gave me the opportunity to gather knowledge regarding materials and specifications that are generally applied to a building. Being involved in a dynamic design practice also developed a sensitive understanding of which materials are most effective but will also contribute to the integrity of a building without compromising on the client’s budget. Having an initial design in mind, I developed the ability to resolve practical issues that arised when executing a design originating from conceptual thinking. The process from refining a conceptual design to an articulate building gave me the necessary exposure to design more concrete buildings in the future.

Bloemfontein

This dissertation addresses the rejuvenation of a large part of the inner city of Bloemfontein. The design is motivated by the circumstances of the current urban landscape which fails to provide adequate play spaces for children. Bloemfontein Kingspark Zoo is proposed for low-scale lowdensity development while preserving this area as a green lung in the inner city. As part of the zoo development masterplan the preschool and daycare centre provides a safe and supervised space within the city for children. Bringing children to the city should mediate adults with children and generate a landscape with new characteristics by means of architecture and urban planning.

The park-like landscape of the existing zoo in contrast to the ‘concrete jungle’ renders a dramatic playscape where children, protected from harm, can allow their imaginations to roam free. From children’s natural ability to translate ‘things’ of the everyday world into the obstacle and creature of an epic adventure, this thesis finds its conceptual basis. The proposed project analogously attempts an architectural translation of the innate narrative qualities of children. As a conceptual basis the thesis investigates this playscape and imaginative adventures as navigational tools for the design Spatial representation of Fairy Tales are explored and will form part of the design rationale with the intention of generating exhilarating spatial experiences.
