t is acknowledged as one of the most popular places in the country to both live and work, and it is set within a nationally recognised Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Quintessentially English, the Ribble Valley represents all that is good about Britain – locally sourced food, rich heritage, strong traditions, stunning landscapes and a very warm welcome to anyone who visits. It is reported that reigning monarch, HM Queen Elizabeth II, said in her official biography that she would like to retire here. She enjoyed her first ever pub lunch in the Ribble Valley, dining at the Inn at Whitewell. So with that royal seal of approval, the Ribble Valley is the food capital of the region! Truly setting the standard with a tempting menu of country inns and restaurants, with something to suit every palate served at national award-winning establishments. Escape the frantic pace of life and relax in some fantastic countryside. The majestic scenery offers viewing points and picnic stops where drivers, cyclists and walkers alike meet to simply stop and stare, and to soak in exhilarating views and the picturesque landscapes, which remain tranquil and unspoilt. Come and explore quaint market towns and picturesque villages like Clitheroe, Longridge and Whalley, which are brimming with specialist shops offering first class customer service, local produce and expert product knowledge. History

comes to life among the remains of the ravages of Henry the Eighth’s reformation in the stones of Sawley Abbey and Whalley Abbey, sitting alongside Pendle Hill, the backdrop for the famous witch trials of 1612. Travel along the Roman road to Ribchester to discover the remains of a Roman fort or climb to the top of Clitheroe Castle, an 800-year-old Norman keep sitting high aloft this picturesque Lancashire market town. Follow the Tolkien Trail to discover the stunning landscapes that inspired the literary mastermind, J.R.R. Tolkien author of The Hobbit and the classic Lord of the Rings trilogy, during his many visits to Stonyhurst College. With so much on offer, one day in the Ribble Valley is simply not enough. But with a range of accommodation from immaculately managed camping and caravan parks to boutique hotels, you’ll be assured of a top quality welcome whatever your budget and wherever you choose to stay – from decadent and opulent hotels, to the peaceful, tranquil, rural splendour of our stunning five-star holiday home parks. Breathtaking scenery, fine food and wine, and stunning heritage provide the perfect ingredients for fairytale wedding settings and there is a wide range of stunning venues to choose from for your special day.

new life for historic mill

The Outbarn Granted wedding licence Ribble Valley is a hugely popular destination for weddings. This is due to the wide variety of quality wedding venues, the range of creative suppliers, and the beautiful landscapes within which they all operate. Another new venue has recently been granted a licence to hold civic wedding ceremonies. The Out Barn, part of Clough Bottom Farm, is family owned and run. The traditionally stone built barn has been lovingly restored and developed to incorporate an elliptical shaped function room, contemporary in design. The cedar-clad oval extension provides a light and airy space and the design of the room maximises the use of space and comfort. Large oak bi-fold doors provide an outside-in feel and on a long summer day the doors can be opened to provide a seamless transition to nature and the farmland. There is a wide range of wedding venues in the Ribble Valley, all of which can be discovered by logging onto www.ribblevalleyweddingheaven.co.uk

First Year Success for School House Cottage School House Cottage, Newton-in-Bowland will soon be celebrating its first anniversary as a self-catering cottage. Owners Mike and Paula Fairbairn have been delighted with their first year’s business and attribute it to a number of factors, particularly their investment in the quality of the cottage along with some of the very personal touches they apply to their service to customers to make them welcome.

Exciting plans to transform a derelict mill in Clitheroe into a multi-million pound leisure venue, which developers say will be the envy of the North West, have been unveiled by Ribble Valley entrepreneur, James Warburton. The extensive proposals for the site come after the company installed its brewing arm of the business, Bowland Brewery, into the building earlier this year. Bowland Beers, which are becoming particularly popular with visitors, are available in many local pubs including the Inn at Whitewell, the Swan at Whalley and the Three Fishes at Mitton. www.jamesplaces.co.uk

The Foxfields story I first came to the Ribble Valley in 1988 as an area manager with Beverly Hotels London limited. I was on the lookout for further acquisitions for the company and had heard of the Foxfields - a very prestigious restaurant and function room set in the glorious Ribble Valley with breathtaking views! I was so impressed that I recommended that the company buy it. They built 28 suited bedrooms – each with their own sitting room, extended the function room and increasing the size of the restaurant. Subsequently, the company was sold and during the following years, the new owners built a further 16 club rooms with dressing rooms, and a leisure club equipped with a gymnasium, steam room, sauna and swimming pool. As you can imagine, when I heard the Foxfields Country Hotel was for sale I jumped at the chance to put the love and excitement back into the building. Luckily, my enthusiasm was well supported by my wife, Jean, who has also gained vast experience in hotels by running our own local hotel for nine years (which we sold in 2007), and working as a course director for teaching front office systems and sales at a large college in the South of England. Fortunately our son, David, was also keen to be involved as general manager. He is dedicated to hotels and restaurants as since leaving university he has worked successfully in managerial positions at local establishments including Mitton Hall, The Pines Hotel at Chorley and the AJ Bell Stadium in Salford, developing a wealth of experience from these positions. To complete our team, we are very pleased to welcome Ryan Greene as our

Head Chef as he shares our vision for the future. Ryan is a Michelin star-trained chef and has worked in many high profile restaurants and hotels including the Lanesborough in London and the Coniston Hotel in Skipton. We have some very exciting ideas for the coming menus. Now to the future... The hotel will be going through a refurbishment starting April 2016 (while still maintaining our high standard of service throughout and keeping disruption to a minimum). This will include a complete new restaurant and bar, serving cocktails, afternoon tea and exciting dishes involving a touch of fun and theatre. I have no doubt that this will make the Foxfields Country Hotel the place-to-be for dining, celebrating, relaxing and meeting up. Whether it is a wedding or a conference for 200 guests or a meal just for two, I hope you will come and enjoy the superb views of the Ribble Valley and feel the magic of the Foxfields. Facilities: • 28 suited rooms with balconies or patios • 16 clubs rooms with dressing area • Restaurant offering the finest quality dishes cooked by our Michelin trained head chef, Ryan Greene • Lounge areas ideal for enjoying drinks and snacks • Health Club including a swimming pool, sauna,

steam room and gymnasium • Function suite catering for 200 guests • 5 private rooms perfect for celebrations • 9 acres of stunning grounds with superb views of the Ribble Valley landscape - ideal for wedding photography • Licence for civil ceremonies • Free Wi-Fi access throughout • Conference rooms

Start/Parking: Pendleton village car park behind Swan with Two Necks (Grid reference SD755396). Ribchester Roman Museum is located on the north bank of the River Ribble a few miles upstream of Preston. It is situated in the middle of what used to be the Roman fort at Ribchester, a Roman cavalry base and command centre for the whole of the surrounding region. The Romans arrived in Ribchester around AD 70 and remained for almost 300 years during which time a civilian settlement called a vicus grew up around the fort. The squadron of cavalry stationed at Bremetennacum veteranorum, the Roman name for Ribchester, was made up of auxiliaries from ther provinces of the Roman Empire. The original garrison comprised Asturians from Spain but were eventually replaced in the late 2nd century by a unit from the region that is now modern Hungary. They were Sarmatians and famed for their horse riding skills. The Sarmatians are also interesting because of their

Roman Ribchester is brought to life by dramatic displays, which contain a life size cavalryman, Roman legionary and exciting interactive exhibits. Columns have been erected for the first time in 2000 years and there are wonderful objects, including weaponry, jewellery and leatherwork alongside favourites like the replica of the Ribchester Parade Helmet and impressive sculpture of a cavalryman riding down his Celtic adversary. Visitors to the museum can see the granaries that were used for storing large volumes of wheat and other foodstuffs. Part of the defensive ditch that was dug around the fort can be seen in the field opposite the west gate of the fort and there are also remains of the Roman baths behind the primary school. The impressive columns that hold up the White Bull pub in the centre of the village are genuine Roman artefacts. The museum also delves into Ribchester and the

Ribble Valley’s prehistoric past and contains wonderful objects like the amazingly well preserved Bronze Age sword, Iron Age brooches and carvings. The museum, which was officially opened in September 1915, hosts events throughout the year. Details can be found on our website. The Dowsons family story...

Who we are and what we do Having farmed the fields in the heart of the Ribble Valley for three generations, the Dowsons family farm has transformed from humble beginnings and now offers an exciting family visitor experience not to be missed.

Down on the farm, we are passionate about giving children and families the opportunity to get up close and join the team during the most exciting times of the farming calendar. With events including Lambing Live, Nature Trails and MooCow Safari, there is something to keep the whole family entertained.

Over the years the Dowson farm has grown and become home to over 250 dairy cows, farming over 300 acres of rolling hills and pasture land producing milk and cream which is used to create the finest ice cream in the area.

Ice cream Family is at the heart of everything we do, and ice cream is no exception. Being total ice cream lovers we decided to invest in a small ice cream maker and make our own ice cream using only natural, honest ingredients. And so the story began.

On the farm ice cream making is a real family affair; we all have an input when it comes to creating and developing new flavours. Ultimately the taste test has always been the young Dowson children who have the final say on flavours.

We utilise milk from our own herd of dairy cows, as well as championing local Lancashire producers wherever possible. This results in wonderful awardwinning ice creams.

Visitor Centre The Visitor Centre is a favourite with people of all ages, where they can get up close, feed the animals and get a real insight into life on a working farm. Enjoy a light lunch or afternoon tea with cakes that are made on the farm and finish off with one of Mrs Dowsons’ award-winning ice creams in the cafe.

Mrs Dowsons is open at weekends, school and bank holidays, from mid-March till the end of September. For more information visit us online at www.mrsdowsons.co.uk

Not to be missed in 2016 Nature Zone – Enjoy a short stroll to the Nature Zone where you can hunt bugs, go pond dipping and help us preserve and protect the wildlife that calls the farm home.

Cow and Calf Maternity Barn – An opportunity to meet the cows and their newborns and where the farmer will be on hand to answer any questions you may have.

Nature Trail – The more active visitors can enjoy a three mile walk around the farm and fields, spotting the wildlife in their natural habitat, taking in the changing landscape.

Adventure Playscape – Let the children burn off energy climbing, crawling and clambering in our extensive outdoor natural adventure area.

MooCow Safari – Join the farmer for a tractor ride through the fields and meet the dairy herd whilst learning about the changing landscape and taking in some of Ribble Valley’s best views.

Seeing Stars

I

magine yourself on a frosty winters evening wrapped in inky darkness and sprinkled in starlight, in awe of the view as the cosmos magically reveals itself in the wondrous dark skies of Bowland… There’s no better time to explore Ribble Valley’s dark skies thanks to a national initiative that has recently given Dark Sky Discovery Site status sites in the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Dark Sky Discovery Sites are recognised as places within the UK that are both dark and easily accessible, but where it is possible to observe the spectacle of the Milky Way or the constellations such as Orion, with the naked eye. Three locations have been approved in Ribble Valley: Gisburn Forest Hub, Clerk Laithe Newton in Bowland and Slaidburn Village Car Park. They are accessible sites, with good sightlines and relatively low light pollution, giving people the best possible conditions to just turn up and see the stars on a clear night. In 2016 local physicist and amateur astronomer, Robert Ince, is working with the Forest of Bowland, an area of outstanding natural beauty, to offer a series of stargazing events and workshops. Robert explains: “I love showing people the night skies; in the Forest of Bowland you can literally see thousands of stars. It has a real wow factor! Everyone can enjoy stargazing with a pair of binoculars and some basic information on how to get started, including star maps. In 2016 we’ll be running a series of events at discovery site locations – in spring when glittering star clusters and magnificent constellations like Orion, grace the sky, and in autumn when the Milky Way is overhead and meteor showers like the Perseids can put on an amazing show”. At the end of a busy day exploring the area, shopping, sightseeing you can take a well-deserved rest in a luxurious country house hotel or farmhouse B&B, delightful self-catering cottage, rustic country inn or family leisure and camping park.

Sumptuous quality One thing Ribble Valley is not short of is quality accommodation, with exquisitely appointed hotels in stunning locations. The area is a total escape from everyday life and in our hotels you will be treated like royalty. Is it any wonder the Queen herself said she would like to retire here? The quality of food and hospitality in our hotels reaches absolute excellence.

At your own pace Many people prefer to go at their own pace while on holiday and one of our many self-catering cottages and apartments can provide freedom and flexibility. Many are located in and around our farming community, which offers great chances to experience life in the countryside, often with capacity to sleep large groups, self-catering can provide great family holidays.

The great outdoors Being surrounded by such stunning countryside means that to camp or visit with a caravan can be the very best way to experience rural sights and sounds, as well as breathe in the fresh Ribble Valley air. With so many great food suppliers on the doorstep the perfect barbecue is guaranteed.

From home to home We also boast some great bed and breakfast accommodation, often in town and village centres where you are able to really feel a part of some of the great places in the Ribble Valley. Also offering great hospitality and excellent service, smaller hotels and bed and breakfast establishments are often a first choice for visitors.

You can expect friendly service and the best standards wherever you choose to stay, but we do nonetheless recommend you choose premises which are part of an inspected accreditation scheme and that you research your accommodation to ensure its credentials and facilities match your expectations.

A one-night stay dinner, bed & breakfast for two people staying at The Shireburn Arms, based on two sharing a standard double room.

An historic 17th century inn of great warmth and character at the heart of the Ribble Valley and home to the Tolkien Trail. Here you’ll find homely yet contemporary interior design, totally in keeping with the character of the inn, and that wonderful eclectic mix of old sitting alongside new.

The overall effect… still very much that of a country pub, but a country pub of your dreams. The perfect base for exploring the Ribble Valley on foot and close to the bustling market town of Clitheroe for shopping, castles and so much more!
