BOP ONE-STOP-SHOP / 2014 - ongoing The BoP One Stop Shop aims to extend technical and possible cost-sharing support to start-up social businesses; and technical assistance to large businesses that are willing to expand their vision to include the base of the pyramid (BoP) within their business model. The overall aim of the BoP-One-Stop-Shop is therefore to fill these gaps, encourage companies to enter the market, support them in tailoring their products to the target group, include poor parts of the population in value chains and therefore eventually even raise changes for employment. The BoP one stop shop is implemented in a partnership of ATC, EwIV, GIZ and possibly further partners (e.g. UNDP), and is planned to be launched in October 2015.

SUSTAINABILITY REPORTING / 2014 RIBH MENA launched the first study on sustainability reporting across the MENA region in April 2014. It was presented to a diverse audience of sustainability practitioners in Cairo during the Sustainable Business Circle on the 16th of April 2014. The study was conducted by the Egyptian sustainable management consultancy, Ahead of The Curve, and provides detailed information for business owners, sustainability managers and policy makers alike on the state of sustainability communication among 170 of the largest listed companies from 17 countries in the Middle East and North Africa. It highlights pioneers according to country of origin, business sector and company size and looks not only at comprehensive sustainability reporting, but also at patterns of general sustainability communication as well as non-communication. While only 19% of companies provide full sustainability reporting, another 40% engage at least in basic sustainability communication, mainly via online tools. Still, more than 40% of companies surveyed don’t communicate on sustainability practices at all. Only 7% of companies report data for their sustainability activities and performance. A series of Sustainable Business Circles on Sustainability Reporting has taken place in 2014, and was delivered by Ahead of the Curve. as of June 2015

SUSTAINABLE START-UP FORMAT / 2014 The Sustainable Start-Up format is an interactive concept developed by RIBH MENA for start-ups and small & medium enterprises that want to innovate their businesses on an eco-social basis. It is offered either as a five day (15-hour) workshop, or a condensed 3-hour case study lab in collaboration with icecairo. The workshop is divided into 5 sessions where participants: identify key challenges; assess stakeholders; realize their main positive impacts; learn about basic project management, and develop creative communication channels to discuss sustainability practices with stakeholders. The lab focuses on helping participants identify and implement more sustainable business practices allowing their company to have a positive impact on people and the environment. RIBH MENA also offers a training of trainers’ workshop on the format. Elements of The Sustainable Start-Up format include a handbook by RIBH MENA and the UN Global Compact Network Egypt that is available for free as hardcopy (from RIBH MENA’s office) and soft-copy (issuu.com/ribhmena). In 2015, a needs assessment of the start-up scene in Egypt has taken place in order to readapt the format to fit the needs and gaps of the start-up ecosystem in Egypt.

VALUE INNOVATION WORKSHOP / 2014 This workshop’s purpose is to build capacities of businesses on identifying opportunities in sustainability markets and innovate value through a business model approach. It supports and helps executives and entrepreneurs to develop new business ideas that compete on the value proposition of its offerings and assist new market acquisition by aligning the profit formula, resources and processes. Set in the context of sustainability and inclusivity of markets, participants develop a practical approach to locate new business opportunities and exploit them through innovations in business model. The workshop includes examples from India, which is often seen as a “hub for inclusive business models”, and other emerging and developing economies. The workshop uses a “sustainable and inclusive innovation, SI2” approach to design business models. SI2 is an approach which focuses on products and services that are of uncompromising quality at an affordable price, that address the challenges of resource use efficiency, that are scalable and replicable and that add value to the life of people beyond their immediate use.

RIBH MENA has screened and identified potential partners for the implementation of such a project. The aim of the demanded consultancy is to set up a training venue including the delivery of necessary trainings that could help to empower women from the rural outskirts of Cairo. Through these trainings, the women would take an active role in fighting poverty, advocating healthy and sustainable food habits in their communities, and promoting greater access to high-quality, nutritious food for Egyptians. Through the development and launch of a series of food-related inclusive business ventures, the identified women shall showcase models to successfully change the Egyptian food sector and provide access to good, clean, and fair food in Egypt. In the case of a successful implementation, RIBH MENA is aiming at the replication and scaling up of the business model.

ECOLODGE MANUAL / 2015

#TOURISM

NEW!

To engage lodges in being environmentally conscious and socially responsible, we developed the Featherlight Ecolodge Manual in cooperation with the GIZ Private Sector Development Programme (PSDP). It aims at supporting already operating lodge owners or those “to be in keeping the negative impact of tourism on the environment low and increase positive impacts for local communities. This is done by giving hands on tips and contacts for reducing waste production, regulating water and energy usage, minimizing human impact on natural ecosystems and preserving local cultural and historic heritage. The handbook pinpoints 8 themes. By elaborating a selection of possible actions and best-practice examples in more detail, topics are customized to suit the Egyptian context of small to medium size lodges. Where relevant, supplier names and links are provided with a cost / benefit indication. The themes cover a wide range: from (green) construction to waste management. In 2015, RIBH MENA plans to implement a training to lodges in Egypt based on the content of the manual.

TOURISM GUIDE / 2015

#TOURISM

NEW!

In cooperation with the GIZ Private Sector Development Programme (PSDP), the Featherlight Tourism Guide was developed for all the environmentally concerned tourists, to inspire them to travel on a light footprint and truly experience Egypt. With these two guidebooks the Featherlight Team wants to shed light on a more environmentally friendly, socially inclusive, and economically beneficial way of travelling Egypt. The guide features descriptions of Egypt’s five main destinations for light traveling: Fayoum, Aswan, Sinai, Red Sea, and the Western Desert. It also includes information on and contacts to lodges, handicraft producers, as well as nature-and-community-based sight seeing and activities. It targets national and international tourists and aims to promote and communicate why traveling on a light footprint is important and how to do it. The content of the guidebook is currently being transformed into an online platform, where information would be accessible to local and global tourists around the world. The online website is planned to be launched in September 2015.

IB MUTUAL BENEFITS FRAMEWORK / 2014 The project aims to raise awareness among companies in the tourism sector on opportunities for including low-income people into their value chain for mutual benefit. To that end, a communication set was developed, consisting of a conceptual framework paper and 9 case studies (3 case studies in the 3 RIBH countries of operation). This communication set is used to promote inclusive tourism models in the media (blogs, local newspapers) and as input for stakeholder dialogues, events and conversations with companies. The target group of the communication set is, above all, companies along the value chain, from tourism agencies to hotels and restaurants to tour operators and souvenir shops. The three target countries are the countries where Responsible and Inclusive Business Hubs are operated by GIZ on behalf of BMZ, namely Egypt, Indonesia, and South Africa. All three are premier tourist destinations, and significant impact can be expected from making tourism more inclusive. In March 2015, the RIBHs presented the guide and their work on the topic at the ITB Berlin panel “Creating Mutual Benefits with Local Communities. In September 2015, a one-day workshop based on the guide is planned to take place at Cairo, Egypt. as of June 2015

CRAFTS HANDBOOK / 2013-ongoing The crafts handbook is the product of the cooperation between the regional GIZ program Economic Integration of Women – MENA (EconoWin) and the GIZ Responsible and Inclusive Hub – MENA (RIBH MENA) In the context of this cooperation, which took place in the last quarter of 2013, a series of workshops was prepared by EconoWin and hosted by RIBH MENA, who complimented the workshops with a marketplace and a campaign promoting handicrafts as corporate gifts in a series that was titled “Crafts Season.” The crafts handbook aims to open more business opportunities to the artisans of Egypt and the region. While on the other hand, it aims at giving businesses simple ideas on how to be more inclusive through the involvement of handicraft producers and artisans in their business. Both artisans and businesses could find common ground and this could be achieved through the production of corporate gifts that combine the beauty of Egyptian crafts and the practicality desired for corporate gifts. To wrap up its work in the sector, RIBH MENA will publish the handbook in the fourth quarter of 2015.
