Brazil
Social Innovation Journey 2014 30th May - 6th June
190 million people. 26 states. 5th largest country. 6th largest economy in the world. Host of 20% of the global biodiversity. Brazil is a country of social contrasts, joy and natural beauty. With its booming economy, the country has taken its place at a global level in the past 10 years. When Brazil’s GDP surpassed that of the UK, there was reason for celebration and carnival, and it seemed like Brazil was on its way. But is that the reality? This is a country of huge geographical dimensions. The Amazon itself is about 20 times bigger than the entire UK. The distance between the extreme north and the south of Brazil is almost the same as between New York and San Francisco. A democracy has been in place in Brazil since 1985 – which marked the end of two decades of a dictatorship. The country has since experienced an economic boom as the government has opened the economy and changed the currency. Brazil is now seen as a key player in bringing emerging markets together.
Brazil is an incredible place to deepen your insights into social innovation and leadership. It is a country where social entrepreneurs have long inspired and impacted change. People such as the world awarded Ashoka Fellow Fabio Rosa, who enabled access to sustainable energy in the south of Brazil or Vera Cordeiro, a beautiful woman who understood that the “patient’s disease treatment” should go beyond the traditional public hospital support to a more holistic way of “healing” society. The government has also played a key role in reducing poverty, the program “Zero Hunger” has taken millions of Brazilians out of poverty and been globally recognized by the UN as a benchmark. The next few years are exciting for Brazil– the World Football Cup and the Olympic Games are on the line-up, and with them, there is a lot of pressure from the people to bring about a change in the country’s long-rooted social issues and government corruption.
