PROJECT OVERVIEW The work process started with researching two separate subjects on five different topics with a total of 10 subjects. From the ten different ideas, we chose two of the subjects that felt were the most interesting. The topics included: Historical Events Political Events Sport Activity Art Or Design Movement Individual Person

RESEARCH My love for the time period, artistic style, and typography was the reason I chose these two topics. Prohibition was an interesting topic choice because of the amount of anarchy against the law, which was one of the highest points in history. The Dada Movement resonated with me because of the sheer bazaar and typographic qualities. The fact that Dadaists never followed rules and created angry emotions to some of its viewers was something that really caught my interest.

Stamp Design Section 2.1

PROHIBITION Prohibition was a fourteen year period in which the sale, manufacture, and transportation of alcohol was illegal. This was the first an only time that an Amendment of the U.S. was repealed (removed). This period is characterized by glamor, gangsters, and birthed the creation of speakeasies: making it common for the average citizen to break the law. After the American Revolution, drinking was on the rise making a number of societies organize a Temperance movement, which dissuaded people from drinking. The law went into effect on January 16, 1920. On Oct. 28 1919, the Volstead Act passed, making beverages with more than 0.5% alcohol considered intoxicating, and also any alcohol manufacturing machines/devices were considered illegal. There were loopholes of this act: the amendment didn’t mention the actual drinking of liquor and the Volstead Act allowed alcohol consumption if it were prescribed by a doctor. Dec. 5, 1933, the 21st Amendment was ratified which repealed the 18th amendment, making alcohol legal. The legalization of alcohol consumption was partly because of the stock market crash which created the great depression: V needed jobs and the government needed money, thus creating new jobs for citizens and sales taxes for the government. Dada Movement Dada or Dadaism was an art movement of the European avant-garde in the early 20th century. Many claim Dada began in Zürich, Switzerland in 1916, spreading to Berlin shortly thereafter but the height of New York Dada was the year before in 1915. The movement used visual arts, literature, poetry, art manifestos, art theory, theatre, and graphic design, and concentrated on anti-war politics through a rejection of the prevailing standards in art through anti-art cultural works. Dada was an informal international movement, with participants in Europe and North America. The beginnings of Dada correspond to the outbreak of World War I. For many participants, the movement was a protest against the bourgeois nationalist and colonialist interests. “Dada” simply means “nothing”.

TYPE IDEATION The typography in the compositions required extensive research to portray the time period and the overall look of the topics. We were instructed to choose two different typefaces for both of the subjects. Since the subjects are close in time, the typefaces were similar.

Stamp Design Section 3.1

PROHIBITION TYPOGRAPHY The typography I found when researching the Prohibition period was a mix of both serif and san serif. Their use of letter press was one characteristic that really attracted me to the decision of choosing this subject.

STAMP PROJECT INTRODUCTION The challenge is to design two-three stamps and a corresponding sheet with an associated stamp or extension. Bring understanding and appreciation to the audience about the subject. Create desire from the target group.

Stamp Design Section 4.1

SUBJECT CHOICE The Dada Movement was the final decision in choosing of the subject. The typographic and visual qualities worked well for a postage stamp concept. The following information is the strategy for designing the stamps.

Design Solution The solution is to include a color palette, typographic hierarchy, and essential text specified by government regulations. The stamp will also feature a lower price to reflect the prices of stamps in the past.

DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT The design of the Dada Movement stamps required a large amount of trial and error. Finding a solution to design the stamp in a legible composition was the main challenge in creating this series.

STAMP SHEET Once the stamp compositions have been refined, the layout for the stamp sheet was designed. It also was designed with a Dada aesthetic to make a cohesive display of the presentation. Sketches and concepts were conducted in order to design the sheet.

MERCHANDISING AND DEMOGRAPHIC Once the stamp and stamp sheet have been designed, the advertisement of the stamps is created to market towards the targeted demographic.

Stamp Design | Section 7.1

ADVERTISEMENT DESIGN The advertisement showcases a contemporary aesthetic to market towards the artistic demographic. The ad will we showcased in art districts around the United Stated and Europe. The main demographic includes: mature artists, art historians and lovers of typography.

APPLICATION

The advertisement will be displayed in art districts in America and Europe. The main demographic flourish in these parts of the city, so this solution was the best choice for the advertisements.
