The design of a student housing unit on the site annexed to Porto’s customs building (19th century) was the pretext for the development of this part of never treated river front. To the main program were appended other ones such as exhibition gallery, several cafes and restaurants, being the primary goal of the project the control and design of public spaces. The student housing, lying in the East end of the site, is related to the medieval tissue of the city, of small-scale proportions, dense and devoted to housing programs. Its language, far from being mimetic, is rather a reinterpretation of the rhythms of the medieval city, and the way they can vary without losing their homogeneity 2008

It was an academic exercise, without a specific site, that represented the first contact with the problem of multi-family housing. The answer was a three-storey building, composed of two-room and three-room apartments with direct access from the street, having each apartment his own outer space in the backyard. As skin it was used a metal grid that gave the building an abstract look, as a mass laying on top of concrete boxes. Such boxes are both staircases and entrance halls, that try to make, in the ground floor, a smooth transition between the spheres of public and private. 2008 / 2009

The exercise began with the development ofan Urban Masterplan for the rehabilitation of a former army headquarters in Porto, Portugal, that would mix offices, shops, parking facilities, public spaces, but highlighting housing related programs. Later, the detailed Masterplan was developed in depth and construction studies for seventy of the two hundred apartments were made. The developed dwellings were organized into cluster modules of four or six apartments with one to four rooms. The apartments were the result of the study and reinterpretation of the typology of Porto typical house (developed from the sixteenth century until the early twentieth century) and that’s why it has so peculiar proportions. This reinterpretation tried to minimize the circulation spaces, giving it another character by avoiding obsolete corridors, while exploring the possibility of housing in height, creating a hybrid between collective and individual housing. 2008 / 2009

A complex of more than 15,000 square meter placed in Porto’s riverfront in Portugal. Of enormous beauty, the site, is, on the other hand, a stagnated area of the city due to the presence of one of the more degraded neighborhoods with pungent social issues such as drug dealing and poverty. The design process headed towards a telluric approach being the lower part of the building (a two-storey base) a "geography" emerging from the site like a huge rock in which lays down the one hundred room tower with its rooftop pool. This volume looks lighter than the last one, suggesting a gradual disintegration. The two-storey base, with a tectonic look, are the public programs, such as the congress center, bar and lounge, restaurant, reception and administration, indoor pool and SPA but also kitchens, storages and technical areas. The topography rips and penetrates the base, letting the natural light reach all the parts of the hotel and allowing the enrichment of several environments that require such a programmatic variety. 2009 / 20010

Densification, efficient connection between center and peripheries, linking of several centralities scattered along the urban tissue, urbanity as a space of leisure or increasing need of greener forms of energy are some of the key issues that one could easily associate to a generic concept of city and urban life. So are the power transportation infrastructures that invariably are part of every city without being integrated with it. Here, an opportunity to urban development seems to emerge. The point of the project is to react in two different spheres. On one hand, we have tried to turn the negative effects of power lines into a generator of urban development. They could create ideal conditions, through public means, for generating further development and private investment. But, on the other hand, the energy transportation infrastructure is used as a conceptual tool to analyze and understand the city. However, despite of focusing specifically on the problem of this Scandinavian city, having acted so specific to the capital of Norway, designing in such a context is also speculative to the extent that the same questions could be asked in another different context. Both a specific and a general strategy is created, concerning some of the subjects and problems that are, nowadays, common to all cities in the world. 2010/2011

An interpretation of the wood log construction gives emphasis not only to the enclosure programs but also to the spaces between the logs as well as to the courtyard created inside of this system. The voids are here used as exterior spaces that are extensions of the inner areas of the mixed use building. This tries to break with the conventional notion of skyscraper as a very “suffocated” space consequence of a basic stacking of programs on top of each other. On the ground floor, a opened plaza is formed having as a “roof” the “Piranesian” space created by the enormous stack of logs. Those individual pieces, containing different programs, meet in the four corners of the construction, just like the wooden logs in the traditional building technique. 2010/2011

Only forty hours to know the program and site, make rawings, models and the sufficient writing pieces to explain the project. Dom Afonso Henriques Avenue (Porto, Portugal) was the place to intervene, stagnated site waiting for resolution for over fifty years, and the program is a small gallery, studio, temporary housing for artists and meditation space. The proposal, inspired by the madness that is designing a building in such a short time, forgets for a moment all the codes and rules, and goes out of the giving site. A huge beam, that defines the space of meditation, a long way in direct relation to the granite quarry, but also tries to give the Avenue the outline it never had. This element also defines an outdoor stage that appends to the main programmatic requests made by the competition organization. A small building lost his mind and tried to solve in two days what has not been possible to establish in more than fifty years. It may have been a huge pretension ... but it was hell lot of fun! The Melting Cube, Shelter in Antarctica The extreme weather conditions in Antarctica require a small shelter and laboratory for researchers. Apart from efficient, the small building would have to be easy to build, which is complicated in such an isolated part of the world. The construction technique is based on the old way of snow blocks, cuted in situ with the Eskimo method. Inside, modular cork blocks pre-cuted at the factory, complete thermal insulation also doing the interior finish, warmlooking and comfortable. It is the encounter of two worlds: the constructive use of local knowledge playing with technology, industry and easy transportation systems in an increasingly global world…And this was the Portuguese response to an Indian competition for a shelter in the South Pole. 120 Hours Architecture Marathon Conflict solving is more and more an international effort and concern, demanding as many cooperation as possible. In that sense, Oslo, and Norway, has been proving to be a very fertile ground in this area of diplomacy as highlighted by the repeated presence as a world wide leader in philanthropy. However, developments such as Fjordbyen but specially the new National Gallery proposal over Vestbanen, are overshadowing the Nobel Peace Center both in terms of architecture and scale but also in terms of meaning. At the Foundation in Oslo, is placed in a non practical distance from the other Nobel related spaces. As a result, the most important award, that celebrates peace and human kind in general, has actually a scattered and non very cohesive layout in the city. What if we could create a peace /conflict solving hub in the soon to be empty shells and public space on hold of Tullinløkka? This would celebrate peace and the work of the Nobel Foundation, of extreme importance to the world, but at the same time the role of Oslo in conflict resolution issues would be highlighted. Can Tunninløkka be the new symbol for International Aid awareness, being that its new character? 2010/2011

Architecture Magazine
Dédalo magazine is a publishing project developed by a group of students of Oporto University Faculty of Architecture established as a space for critical intervention based on the encouragement of architectural discussion and the issues that the current discipline raises, never forgetting arts or social sciences. The name of the magazine was a reflection around Dédalo’s paradigm, and its history according to Greek mythology: the architect who draws the labyrinth to enclose Minotaur in a way that it never can escape from there. This impenetrability is broken and as punishment Dédalo is locked with his son in its creation. This is the concept of our publication, with a reflective character, a space of openness and criticism, mainly directed to the discussion of the maze that is contemporary architecture. 2009/2010
