MEDITATION SPACE IN MOUCHﾃグ DO LOMBO DO TEJO PROJECT IX/X AIRES MATEUS Autonomous University of Lisbon
The subject Project X aims to create an architectural environment made for meditation, which can be either a building or an outdoor area/pathway. It allows for a large degree of liberty but must comply with a central concept – an area of universal meditation with no religious connotation which can be enjoyed and felt by everyone. Meditation occurs naturally as one experiences the place; initially a site visit was made, the boat trip to the island and on foot through the island itself. The fact that the project is located on an island, assumed to be deserted, exacerbates the idea of travelling, of moving from one shore to the other, from a given reality to an entirely different one. Another immediate realization during the trip is the feeling of isolation, as the island is closed off to the outside, physically by water and visibly by the elevation on the edges. It is a space closed upon itself. It was understood that the way to meditation is through approaching the theme of Journey as a way of breaking free of habits and day-to-day routines, allowing for a state of abstraction that enables different kinds of feelings. There is also the theme of Isolation, allowing for introspective thinking which can con-tribute for the individual’s discovery of himself, with his own identity and purpose. The area to be proposed aims to have these concepts as its basis, exploring the idea of the Journey to the building, which is to have a shape and matter which are timeless, an unknown imaginary, in space and time, with no connection of style or age. The program proposes the recovery of the exile of the hospital building, a former convent of the religious order of nineteenth century, and enhance the surrounding block , taking advantage of the empty space land and the vacant buildings , located between Nova Street and Almirante Reis Avenue. It is intended that the intervention has a revitalizing impact of the city at this point . It proposed the convent building adaptation to the hotel, and the creation of new residential buildings . The main premise of this whole master plan is the ability of social inclusion , different people , of different ages and different social strata.
