Hello! I`m Riccardo Carati Enjoying great urban and architectural dynamism in the past years developed in me a strong passion for this profession and enabled me to make valuable experiences in the theoretical and practical sides of architectural discipline. As well, the direct experience of the different urban, rural and industrial landscapes, exposed me to various design cultures, broadening my view of the world. Now i`m ready to start a new adventure. I pro-actively foster my architectural knowledge with research projects and competitions as I’m broadly interested in the Urban Question and in the socio-economic practices influencing the growth of cities. I am interested in Architecture both theoretically and from a practical approach in the execution. I find pleasure in making things with my own hands, and I believe in model making not only as way to visualize the projects, but as an important design tool from which design itself emerge. I consider myself a passionate architect who strongly believes that theory and practice should go together. I’m confident and energetic, with excellent teamwork skills, strong work ethic, great adaptability and I always keep a positive attitude during my job.
This portfolio Is a short selection of my academic and professional work. It is the collection of the works i believe are, to me, the most important and that contributed to my personal education and as an architect, they describe my interests in both Architecture and the City.

#1_Foyer Schaeerbekois Volet 2 - Design for passive housing
Status: Design competition, 1st Prize Location: Brussels, Belgium
Volet 2 envisioned for the construction of a new building at the place of two buildings too old and damaged to be renovated. The new building needed to be in armony with the rest of the Foyer Shaerbeekois renovated buildings.
Area: / Program: Social Dwellings and corner Shop
The design references the solutions adopted in the renovation strategy for Volet1. The circulation is organized in a similar way, with terraces, elevators and walkways to the entrances of the apartments. The materials of the new building take direct inspiration from the texture and colors used in the old Foyer Schaerbeekois buildings. The brick facade for example, is a direct expression of this reference and the way brick’s are used as a decoration, is a reference to the Belgian tradition of construction making use of the Flamish Bond, and few variations of this system. The new building respects the standard of passive housing principles, and is constiuted by 18 new dwellings of different sizes and organization in order to provide a mixed type of tenants and thus a mixed community. The corner of the building hosts a small commercial activity as in the tradition of the Chausee de Helmet.

#2_Veighelias Housing Dwellings in Brussels
Status: Under Construction Location: Brussels, Belgium Area: / Program: Dwellings
Weighelias Housing is a commissioned project for 6 the construction of six new apartments (three and four rooms, aparments, one penthouse with a large terrace on the last floor) in Woluwe St. Pierre, a small municipality of the Brussels Capital Region mainly caracterized by high-end and small scale residential developments . The total siurface of the building is about 1000sqm. The layout of the building is organized on three floors abouve ground, an underground floor for set of six enclosed parking spots. A small garden in the background of the property is organized in order to be freely accessible to all the owners of the building. The building relates to his context in terms of color, material and maximum elevation (gabarits) and is designed as to be a passive house, as prescribed by the contemporary building regulations in the Brussels Capital Region.

#3_De Sterretjes Primary school for special education
Status: Open Oproep, NL architects, March 2013
The school hosts around 100 pupils (with behavioural and cognitive problems) and 30 staff members (teachers, medical staff and administration).
Location: Tienen, Belgium Area: 2500 m2 Program: School for 100 pupils
The project site is a sloping plot, with about 2,5m of height difference. The design concept consists of a educational plateau which reunites all the education program (classrooms and special education rooms), floating over an engraved terrain, the public functions (gym, refectory, outdoor playground). The circulation between levels is solved as a 3d loop made of ramps and stairs. The layout of the classroom is open to modification, allowing for different kind of teaching methods or group activities. The gym is the central point for the organization of the school and its sheds roof works as natural ventilation devices, and as the main source of natural light.

#4_Contract de quartier ‘ Sceptre’ Partecipated district development in Brussels
The contact de quartier Sceptre is a strategic program for a 59ha urban renewal in Brussels, between the European district and the historical center. It is a study on urban and social issues such as passive social housing, sustainable mobility & infrastructure, social and political communication, financing of socioeconomic activities.
Status: Completed Location: Ixelles, Belgium Area: 59Ha Program: Social Housing, public services, infrastructure, leisure
The peliminary design proposals involved the inhabitants of the neighborhood: we encountered them in an open symposium as well with information stalls installed in the weekly market in the neighbourghood. The investigation phase was carried through different layers: starting from the field investigation and historic archive research throught active and partecipative processes. The result of consisted is a list of 40 proposals to be submitted for final approval to Brussels citizens and authorities. This interventions included various design solutions: from the full architectural design of a building to program hybridization as well small interventions on public furniture, street lighting, and new public spaces on the terrain vagues.

#5_Cascina S.Giuseppe Farm refurbishment and tranformation
Status: Construction Permit phase Location: Milan Area: / Program: Civic centre, bar, public services,
Magneti Marelli’s former industrial site in Milan has been dismissed more than 20 years. A new masterplan is in developement, including dwellings, commercial areas, leisure and the construction of a urban park in order to balance the heavy-concrete constructions in the area. The project for the refurbishment of the old farm Cascina S.Giuseppe, which is located in the centre of the new park is a project of restoration and conversion into the new function of civic centre with poly-functional rooms, bar, public facilities. The project is completed by the reconstruction according to the old layout of the court-portico of the farm, which will be hosting public events and offer protection from rain or sun. The project is particularly focused on the transformation and adaptation the old structure to new energetic strandards and to provide full accessibility and movement for people needing wheelchairs. The construction permit phase included the calculations to new parameters and laws for aeration and lighting, insulation, and fire resistance and prevention.

#6_‘Cain’ A prison, a forest and a garden
Status: Europan 12, submission Location: Vila Vicosa, Portugal Area: ~60.000 m2 Program: Prison and garden
The city: The symbolic role of Vila Viçosa , its importance for Portuguese national identity and culture is mainly related to the role the city had in the political strategy of sovereign authority. More preciselly, the formal language of the most important urban spaces represents precise political intentions which have structured the city throughout history. This elements are the Ducal Palace, the castle, and Placa da Republica. The prison: The Portuguese government announced a proposal for investing in prisons for introducing alternative penal sentences to counteract the fallacies of a penal system more successful in producing new criminals, rather than rehabilitating offenders. In our time, while surveillance of public and the private sphere persistently remind of the risk of committing a crime, prisons are normally placed outside the city and removed from collective imaginary. The complete detachment between city and prison, between citizenship and deviance, finally alienated one from the other. A prison in Vila Viçosa clearly questions this distinction, accepting deviance as an integral part of society. The aim of this project is not that of exposing punishment, rather that of showing the result of the rehabilitation process and the mutual benefit of the proximity between the city and the prison.

#8_Rotterdam map of Re-appropriation Study on alternative strategies of urban densification
Status: Application for Stimulering Fonds NL, May 2013 Location: Rotterdam ,The Netherlands Area: / Program: Research and Mapping
This project for the city of Rotterdam has the intent of exploring and mapping the spatial implications and the emergent modalities of dwelling deriving from the phenomena of global migration of human capital and from an increasingly accelerated international working mobility. The fall of national borders especially between European countries, and the consequent free movement of highly specialized workers are found to be closely related to local practices of adaptation, subdivision, separation and fragmentation of domestic spaces and thus to their alternative re-appropriation. When fragmentation and subdivision of domestic space is re-framed from an urban perspective and observed at a larger scale, what appears leading toward accentuated segregation and mutual exclusion between neighbors, can be reconsidered in terms of its potential for enhancing social exchange and possibility of encounter. Dealing with the concept of adaptability and the city, this research propose a spatial strategy able to deal with the current urban conditions: cities are increasingly challenged by very liquid condition of citizenship and in Rotterdam this challenge becomes evident. Introducing creative individuals and their extreme flexibility in dwelling habits could truly have a stimulating impact on the vitalization of the inner city life.
