RICCARDO DE VECCHI

PORTFOLIO_ general information

1 I’m a student in architecture at the IUAV university of Venice, Italy. I’m completing the last year of the bachelor. The IUAV university is based on different aspects of architecture, mainly focused on the historical and conceptual part of this matter. During these three years I took three design workshops linked to structure and building technology courses, a strong base in ancien and modern history of architecture, landscape and urban design workshops. More, the IUAV has strong contacts with universities of all the world, and each summer an international workshop is organized. I took my first year summer workshop with the architect Sean Godsell, from Australia, while in the second year I worked with Ricardo Bak Gordon, from Portugal. Each of the experience were really richful in a lot of different aspects, even out the world of architecture. This last year I took my Erasmus in Liege, Belgium. There I had the possibility to learn from a school with different ideas and ways of thinking, in addiction to a very different culture and architectural context that enriched my experience with new solutions and knowledge.

the course required the design of a vacation home for a famous person assigned to each group. In this way, each student had the opportunity to be based on a detailed survey of its customers to start their first project. in our case the customer was the French actor Jean Louis Trintignant. The site is located on a promontory overlooking the bay of the wonderful Gargano area. This therefore provides a strong connection with the natural context: the project is to be developed in harmony with the environment, but also always following the main lines of the character that was assigned to us. the product of this merger is a discrete building that is part of the slope hiding its presence, but then totally opening the landscape below through large windows and an open floor plan. the subdivision of interior spaces is given by the advancement of the private part of the house, which allows you to maintain the privacy and opens a small patio in the back, relax area and away from heat.

ALL THE WORLD KNOWS THE FAMOUS BIENNALE DI VENEZIA, the INTERNATIONAL EVENT ABOUT ART AND CULTURE, TAKES PLACE IN THE GIARDINI della biennale OF VENICE, AT THE END OF THE ISLE, each 2 years BUT, THE GIARDINI IS AN HUGE SPACE THAT IS TOTALLY CLOSED WHEN THE BIENNALE IS OFF. SO, WHY NOT TO GIVE THAT SPACE BACK TO THE PEOPLE OF VENICE?

WHAT ABOUT DISLOCATING THE BIENNALE?

right just outside Venice, after the “POnte della liberta’”, is one of the largest industrial centers in Italy: Marghera. Past the golden age of the ‘70s, the whole area is now becoming deserted. Inside the immense space does not remain now that 2/3 large factories in operation. also the issue relates to the conservation or not of many of the buildings still standing and, in general, the process for restoring the zone. our idea is therefore based on the two-year move into one of the tion of the industrial pole. in this way not only takes advantage of a disused area, but plenty of space allows to fix many problems such as space and logistics. scenario that occurs in the area of Marghera is apocalyptic: sheds, gas tanks, skeletons of old buildings, all left to itself. but this post-industrial heritage hides a huge potential: it offers an incredible opportunity to re-use and up-converts these structures in many ways. The composition of urban scale follows the pattern of Venice, but at a larger scale: large shipping channels for the transport of goods divides the pole in different areas and islands. To design the new biennale, we chose the former area of the petro-chemical: in fact, the site overlooks the lagoon and Venice and is directly connected with the main junction, in order to provide easy access to the area from visitors. The enormous space available allowed us to think of a biennial much more extensive. unlike the current biennial, every nation has its own pavilion. For this reason, the second phase of the workshop focused on the design for each student of a pavilion. to this is added the planning of a residential area, public infrastructure, land routes and sea and a symbol, consisting of the large structure at water’s edge, which is a great cover that marks the edge of the biennale, below which you carry out various activities in multifunctional spaces

PROJECT INFO_ - Location: Valencia, Spain - Project type: Academic Project - Individual/Grup Work: Individual work - Level of the project: firts semester, year 2014 - Carried out: 22 April 2014 - Supervisor: Arch. Prof. Michela De Poli, depoli@iuav.it - C.F:U. and Mark: 6 CFU / 28/30

Valencia, river turia

LETS use our landscape in a smart way The project is based on the analysis of the project for the former River Turia, in Valencia. The city needed a park, which was obtained by diverting the natural course of the river, and planning in place a green space that runs through the city. This aspect brings enormous benefits, as the park becomes accessible from all parts of the city. also become a landmark and a symbol. Having regard to the continuity of the course, the basic idea is to find a composition of modules that are repeated in space, providing different services along the way. large pedenze then gently bringing the urban context to that of the park, by modeling the same, creating a landscape that characterizes the entire course of the ancient river. below these reliefs can be installed facilities such as bars, changing rooms for outdoor sports fields, bike stores. the plot of the park is developed on the design of linear paths and circular spaces, representing parking spaces each with different equipment for different activities within them. at the sides of the park there are two bike lanes for crossing fast

The project concerns the design of a residence for 350 people in the natural context of Lake Garda in Sirmione. The course required the design of the entire area in question, from the park to the module housing. The project must pay special attention to the natural context in which it is located: in fact, the area is protected and requires special attention on the construction of new buildings. focusing on a building on the lake shore, the first argument fell on the concept of limit / barrier and placement of buildings. From the design of the new bank has generated the building installation, which aims to redefine the profile of the coast in harmony with the nature of the place.

The project is located in one of the neighborhoods of Liege, composed of traditional houses that do not exceed four stories. The complicated plot of urban composition generates irregular spaces which often represent a challenge for the design of new buildings. in this case, the request is to design a building with 4 apartments, of which one for handicapped people. the lack of open spaces in the area has added the need to think of a building comprising of open spaces and usable not only by residents, but by all the inhabitants of the district. E CONTEXTE the use of housing units developed along a preferred direction has allowed us to put together a volume whose complexity creates open spaces, private gardens and high quality of the apartments, enjoying plenty of light and different views of the surrounding context. WHY APPLY FOR TU DELFT? The path followed by these three years has allowed me to develop different themes and deepen skills about technology, reading of the context and finding answers to the needs in different situations. In particular, the most interesting part I found in each project is the conceptual stage. this first phase deal with a number of limitations and problems whose resolution will be the founding idea of the project. The resolution of these problems starts from the analysis of the context, confronted with the demands to be met. This whole series of variables leads to a solution that has to balance functionality and architectural quality. what I find challenging is just the constant change of these variables, which push the architect to investigate the best proposal for each situation. therefore I think that understanding the context in which we find ourselves, especially nowadays, in a world in constant and rapid evolution, which constantly demand new needs, is fundamental. But, given the failure of the traditional system used to date, there is a clear need for a new way of thinking. In this I found my interest in the Technical University of Delft: not only one of the most prestigious universities at the time, but also a meeting place for students from all around the world, the optimal situation to stimulate the meeting, discussion and comparison between different cultures and ways of thinking. in particular, the specialization in Methods and Analysis focuses on the topics that most interest me, the ability to develop a proper strategy allows to adopt new ways of thinking that can adapt to the highly dynamic environment in which we place ourselves. From this a new architecture can be born, able to meet the contemporary needs and the ones. furthermore, Understanding the existing context connects with the theme of reuse and transformation: Today we have the opportunity to rethink all those structures and areas that are abandoned due to economic and social changes that affect the industries and consequently the city. in programs of courses Methods and Analysis and the Architecture and heritge I found the points that I would like to develop more in my studies. If the first favors a more theoretical approach, the second assumes a critical analysis and study in order to proceed to the design of an architecture in response to new problems and therefore requires an effort in terms of ideas, trying to bring the student to think “outside the box, but at the same time providing all the necessary knowledge in the field of technology and practical aspects of architecture for these reasons, and under extremely favorable environment of architecture in the Netherlands, I hope to be given a chance to improve my skills in a university of your caliber.
