CONTENTS Reading Space
Resolving the building by taking all aspects into consideration, and carefully understanding the relation between form and surrounding site context.
01
Narrative Architecture
Studying the site context and relating the learnt narration with the building, to design a heritage cell. Understanding the contextual factors helps in resolving the project in further detail and leads to a well-rounded project development.
02
Housing
Analyzing the basic need of millennials, to help create an environment based on their liking and necessity, simultaneously considering the structural possibilities and building economy.
05
Diagramming
Creating diagrams according to the philosophy of the project and translating them into space. Hence, taking this process of diagram formulation into project configuration, resonating with all aspects of form and function.
08
Matrix
Understanding the site is one of the main factors, catering to its issues, followed by creating a space and form which is suitable for the environment.
11
Abstraction
Studying an object as seen to the naked eye, and analysing it to create a different form and spatial quality.

The site is located in the old city of Vadodara, Nazarbaug palace. Here, the design proposal highlights contextual reflection in the building. The old city was initially a walled city with four gates for entering the city from each side. The center of the city has this pavilion ‘Mandvi gate’. It is filled with historical significance and heritage. Looking at the spaces of old city, there is a hierarchy which is followed all though out the area, which is same for all the residents. Each building facade has its own specifications and character retaining a connection with the street.

Narrative Architecture Heritage cell
The basic idea was to study and observe the street character, flanked by different building styles in different periods. Another important aspect was to analyse the street hierarchy and its connections such as the main roads, submain roads, khadki, khichi and courtyard. The pivotal characteristics of the buildings placed adjoining the main road were linear form, grid planning, promoting interaction with the main street by opening up the built forms out into the street (shards). However, since most of the buildings were of mix-use typology (commercial + residential), the privacy factor attained was lower. Further, the characteristics of sub-streets and khadkis had a noticeable difference from those of the main road. The planning and building form is comparatively rigid, not all buildings follow the city grid for planning. The privacy factor is generated as one proceeds towards the courtyard. The diagram tries to show the experience of the street in terms of projections, street character, followed by a layer of projections, which tries to show the impact of less workmanship and how the building (Force) helps change the angle of the street.
Building balconies promoting connection with street.
Diagram represent the different character of the street.

Housing
Millennials Habitat
DN
Our housing site was located in Pune, near Amanora mall. In this studio, the first stage was to visit, study and observe the site. The next step included the brief of requirements, such as the following: Site area, avoid cutting any existing trees, houses for 500 occupants. The site area is 10,100 sq.mt, including their workspace and common Amenities. Split levels define the public and private spaces differently, so that every space maintains its specific character. After every three units, there is provision of a common space, which is open and flexible in planning, so people can freely use that space for multi-purpose activities such as common gathering. The function of the shared spaces is not fixed, which allows people to define the space according to their needs. The cluster arrangements of all three units are in such a way, that all the units have direct accessibility from their spaces to the shared or common spaces provided. Idea: Promotion of well-connected interaction spaces Strategy: Staggering, Double volume spaces Issues: Light, Shade, View, Tree, Ventilation

In order to simplify the transitions between furniture and wall modules, the design designates five main types of domestic programs. These modes simplify the activities contained within a home into eat, sleep, groom, dress and play. Each mode represents the systems and activities required in our daily rituals and different modes to adapt to the user’s specific needs.

Diagramming Primary School

B'
B
A'
The site was located in Vadodara near Navrachana school. Here we have to Design a Primary School, using the process of Diagramming. In this process, the concept is evolved into diagrams in various stages, which then turn into a Philosophy. This philosophy then gets transformed into the design. The main Philosophy of the design is Restricted Freedom. It means that freedom is permitted along with restrictions. The curriculum of the school not only focuses on academics, but also addresses other activities. Hence, the primary school is planned accordingly, where in some spaces may be restricted but some are interconnected, so that freedom is allowed. This also promotes inter-student and student-teacher interaction. The curved lines indicate students and grid represents the restrictions.
Process Diagrams

Diagramming Primary School
The central axis is the main axis, according to which, a formal space with a formal interaction is generated in an organized grid with restrictions and informal spaces are not in an organized grid, it breaks the grid and creates its own space. In case of formal spaces, the massing is properly organized inside the grid, whereas in case of informal spaces, the massing is formulated by breaking the grid pattern. According to restricted freedom, the informal space in the center breaks the grid and the formal space in the surrounding has restrictions. Hence it creates freedom (informal space) with restrictions (formal and semi-formal space).

Matrix Studio Cottages
The programmed was to design Cottages at Junaraj, Gujarat. The process of design development in this studio followed the lines of Matrix principles. At first, Individual sites were identified on the basis of Views, Climate, Topography and Accessibility. Matrix of these situations were then formed, in which options were generated for a specific solution. At the end, every solution was overlapped with each other, to create a section of a building which tackles every issue. Internal spaces were divided into public, semi- public and private. The orientation of the building is derived from the view and angle of the sun. The strategy was to create wind funnel on the south-west side and trying to open out towards the north side which has the view or the river.

Abstraction Studio Meditation Center
My subject for this studio is Sunflower. Initially, I observed, studied and analyzed its different aspects. After getting a thorough understanding of it, I have abstracted its essence and represented it in a physical form through models and sketches. Movement and growth of the Sunflower seeds with respect to wind and other forces that act on it, formulated the base for this abstraction. The selected model is then resolved structurally while keeping in mind the overall abstraction but modifying it for structural integrity.
12
Basic Design Shell Abstraction Architectonics
The exercise deals with the understanding of interrelationship between space, form and structure through three dimensional models and the ability to develop basic drawings and representational skills, appropriate shading techniques with texture/quality of the shell. Explore the interrelationship between outer form and the space contained within. Demonstrate the concepts of structure, space and form through three dimensional models.
The exercise Architectonics explores arrangements of planes across all the eight quadrants formed by X,Y & Z. These planes can be assembled in various permutations and combinations by interconnecting them thru a consistent joinery system while negotiating all the eight quadrants in space.
13
Foundation Studio Negotiating the Wall Living Space
This exercise induces negotiation between the walls, both visually and physically through cut outs/openings in the wall and a natural object (a tree, a mound) and the self. It introduces principles pertaining to composition such as balance, axis, direction, sequence etc. It is perceived in relation to human travelling through the designed space.
14
The exercise focuses on understanding the space requirements and developed a spatial module for Sculptor with specific requirements and character. It’s about capturing the presence of this personality with the help of spatial elements, their combinative language, play of light and shade and relationship between inside and outside the space.
Deconstruction
Workshop work
The programmed was to design a folly in Kamatibaug, Vadodara. A folly is a built structure constructed primarily for decoration. The toy-train is the focal point of recreation in Kamatibaug. The proposal of the folly takes inspiration from the existing railway tracks in Kamatibaug. The railway tracks have been undulated, scaled and deformed to create interesting curves that act like pauses along the path. The sleepers of the tracks are stretched to complement the curves and form canopy like spaces creating interesting shadows along the path.

History
World Trade Center Kanchanjunga Apartments
Exploration of structural philosophy
Santiago Calatrava fulfills an astonishing variety of roles in a specialized age: artist, sculptor, engineer, architect and a builder. He formulates his ideas and develops them in a very different way. He tries to emphasize the importance of the place first. He thinks that the very first impression is formulated from the place and it is fundamental to establish a link of feeling with the place.
Charles Correa wasn’t just an architect, a planner; he was an activist, a theoretician. He was concerned about the major issues facing the modern cities and tried to find the solutions using some effective traditional Indian architectural practices. The building is a live example of his ability to combine the age-old methods and style with modernistic planning and comforts. 22
