Instructions: Code 39 (also known as Code 3 of 9, Alpha39 or Type 39) is a low-density,variable length barcode symbology where each of 43 characters can be encoded with a machine-readable pattern comprising five bars of one of two thicknesses, alternated with spaces of similar proportions. The ratio to thick and thin can be between 1:2 and 1:3 and the implementation is very error tolerant. The symbology can optionally contain a check digit before the terminator symbol, derived as a modulo of 43. Each barcode must be initiated and terminated with a “*�, but with no minimum label length.

Build-Your-Own-Barcode Competition Rules I worked with barcodes a lot back in the 1990始s. When I say a lot, I mean I worked with one barcode symbology, but a lot. Here is a challenge to hand-draw a working barcode. It is possible and here are the rules. 1. Must be FREEHAND DRAWN. No rulers, no computers, no printers, no copiers. 2. Must be at least 3 characters long, not including the terminating asterisks. 3. Must be machine readable. I have made it easier by including the initiating and terminating asterisks at the beginning and the end. Code 39 is very error-tolerant and you do not need to fill the entire barcode. It is ok to leave space before the final character. You can get a printed flyer from me or you can download the PDF and print your own.
