THE ARTIST & THE ARCHIBALD PRIZE Craig Ruddy’s name has become synonymous with the AGNSW Archibald Prize since 2004, when his highly controversial portrait of Aboriginal actor David Gulpilil entitled "Two Worlds", won Australia's most prestigious art prize. The painting also won the People’s Choice Award (the second time ever that an artist has won both). In 2006 he was a finalist with a self portrait diptych, which mapped his struggle with the highs and lows of what happens when dreams become reality. Again he won the People’s Choice in 2010 for his portrait of writer/director Warwick Thornton titled "Prince of Darkness" and also in 2011 his portrait of Cathy Freeman was selected Finalist in that year’s AGNSW Archibald Prize.
