HISTORIC PANDA CYLINDER ADDED TO CHINA GALLERY A new item on loan from Julie Nixon Eisenhower
D
uring the Nixons’ trip to China in 1972, their Chinese hosts placed Panda Cigarettes at every place setting at formal dinners and banquets throughout their visit. First Lady Pat Nixon also visited the pandas at the Beijing Zoo on February 22, 1972. This cigarette cylinder (at right) was at Pat Nixon’s table setting at one of the state banquets. Seated next to Premier Zhou Enlai, Mrs. Nixon pointed to the pandas on this cylinder and said to him,“Aren’t they cute? I love them.” The Premier replied,“I’ll give you some.” Mrs. Nixon responded,“Cigarettes?” “No,’ he answered,“pandas.” Out of this exchange, the United States received its first-ever pair of giant pandas, which Mrs. Nixon welcomed at the Smithsonian National Zoo on April 16, 1972. the richard nixon foundation and chapman university officially launched a formal partnership, centered around the Richard Nixon Foundation Fellows Program at Chapman University in Orange, California. The program develops mid-career Foreign Service Officers from the U.S. State Department to obtain a multi-disciplinary education, professional credentials, and significant analytical skills by studying Nixon-era foreign policies at the Nixon Library and applying them in their posts and positions when they return to duty. This partnership creates the first formal ties between the two Orange County institutions, as well as the first formal arrangement between the Nixon Foundation and an organization of higher learning. Nixon Foundation President Bill Baribault and Chapman University President Daniele Struppa signed a formal agreement at Chapman University on September 28, part of a program that featured remarks from General H.R. McMaster, former National Security Advisor under President Trump. The day prior to the signing General McMaster toured the Nixon Library and participated in a public program about American foreign policy and national security in the post-9/11 era. H
