IN WITH THE NEW

“T

he President can still draw a crowd,” the Wall Street Journal declared – of 3,000 to be exact. The New Nixon Library & Museum opened with two days of tributes to a consequential statesman and an iconic first lady who devoted their lives to public service. The Opening was a spectacular climax of several years of planning, fundraising and construction to allow visitors to discover how Richard Nixon shaped our world. It celebrated the efforts of hundreds to create a dramatic presentation with new technologies, interactive displays and participatory learning opportunities for visitors and students of all ages. The opening ceremony kicked off with fanfare from the USC Trojan Marching Band, the singing of the National Anthem, flyovers and a meaningful invocation. As the Band played “Fight On” – a tribute to alumna Pat Nixon – 24 pounds of confetti filled the air and Christopher Nixon Cox and Melanie Eisenhower, two of President and Mrs. Nixon’s grandchildren, officially cut the opening ribbon. Notable participants, in addition to co-chairs Cox and Eisenhower, included Tricia Nixon Cox and Edward Cox; Ed Nixon; Dr. Henry Kissinger; His Excellency Cui Tiankai, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to the United States; former Calif. Gov. Pete Wilson; and Rep. Ed Royce, Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. “We celebrate the opening of the meticulously researched, historically accurate, new addition of the Library,” Tricia Nixon Cox said. “President Nixon was a rare statesman who saw and reached far in service to this country,” Chairman Ron Walker said. “After touring this New Nixon Library, you

the true American spirit of bipartisanship. Calling him a “rock star, a great man and a great American,” Julia Argyros, President of the Argyros Family Foundation, introduced Dr. Henry Kissinger at a luncheon following the ceremony and attended by over 450 invited guests. Dr. Kissinger was joined for a conversation on stage by Ambassador Winston Lord, former U.S. Ambassador to China, and then-Fox News National Security Analyst KT McFarland - now Deputy National Security Advisor under President Trump. “We worked closely together,” Dr. Kissinger said. “And the credit for that really goes to Richard Nixon.” “The Nixon foreign policy was complicated. But if you look at its pattern, it had a purpose,” Dr. Kissinger went on. “And that is the lesson that sooner or later we’ll have to learn as a country. Because we are now so connected with other people… So the real legacy of Nixon isn’t any one of these steps that we’re taking, but the pattern and the way of thinking.”

Ben Stein toasted President Nixon at the culmination of the luncheon. Ambassador Cui used the luncheon to deliver an electric statement on China-U.S. relations, looking beyond the inauguration of the (then undecided) next president to outline areas in which our two countries can work together on common ground. “Today, the China-U.S. relationship is at a historical crossroads again,” the Ambassador said. “It is against this big picture and in a highly forward-looking manner that President Xi Jinping and President Barack Obama,

The Making of the New Nixon Library featured the three organizations behind the conception, design and execution of both building the new museum and mirroring it in a fun, easy-to-navigate method online. A Consequential Life featured four Nixon biographers – Irwin Gellman, Luke Nichter, Douglas Schoen and Evan Thomas – reflecting on President Nixon’s consequential and always interesting continuing impact on American life. “PHASE II”

Keeping Richard Nixon Relevant As the Centennial Legacy Campaign nears completion—we’re just under $2 million from our goal—and now that the museum is completed, opened, and attended like never before, the Board of Directors has launched a marked strategic shift in the Foundation’s mission and direction, to producing, implementing, growing and sustaining $10 million worth of exciting, new educational programs and initiatives. All of these new programs and initiatives—known

around Yorba Linda as “Phase II”—are “forward looking,” that is to say that each program actively ties an element of President Nixon’s legacy to contemporary geopolitical issues and/or promotes that legacy to a new generation. These programs and initiatives will result in actionable information for use by policy makers, students or researchers, as well as inspire people of all ages to more fully understand the Nixon story in totality.

The Consul General of the People’s Republic of China, Ambassador Liu Jian joined with the Foundation to commemorate the 45th anniversary of the Shanghai Communique. Joined by his wife Mme. Chen Xiaoling, Col. Jack Brennan, Bill Baribault, Michael Ellzey, Dr. James Cavanaugh, Vice Chairman of the Foundation Board.

Leadership and staff are bringing Phase II to life including visits with the Chapman University President Daniele C. Struppa.

First report on Sino-U.S. relations is available at nixonfoundation.org/programs.

The programs and initiatives can be divided into four core pillars: 1. BUILDING A MORE JUST SOCIETY (Domestic legacy initiatives) By developing and implementing programs that serve to further many of the domestic initiatives that RN implemented, the Foundation will be making real change in the lives of young Americans.

2. UNDERSTANDING THE NIXON STORY (Archival/study/university relations) By embracing scholars and students while moving ever-closer to the educational community, the Foundation can expand its opportunities to enact real change. These available opportunities include research grants, internships, partnerships with universities requiring study—and actionable results of such study— of RN, and online curriculum.

The implementation of Phase II programs and initiatives is the future of the Richard Nixon Foundation —and, needless to say, we’re already off and running. For more information on how you can support

3. SUSTAINING A GENERATION OF PEACE (Foreign legacy initiatives) The Foundation will put on a series of programs— onsite and offsite—to promote cooperation between China and the U.S. while recognizing differences. Injecting the Nixon name into China-U.S. relations serves to develop a franchise on China studies and policy for the Foundation.

4. STRATEGIZING FOR THE FUTURE (The Annual Nixon Forum) The annual Nixon Forum conference will create a thought provoking and insightful presentation and discussion for millennials on understanding and critically thinking through change.

IN MEMORIAM Richard Solomon Ambassador Richard Solomon, a distinguished diplomat who helped open China to the world, died March 13 at 79. During the important exchanges that resulted in President Nixon’s opening of China, Dick had the critical role as RN’s representative to the Chinese Ping-Pong team during their American tour in April 1972.

Melvin Laird Mel Laird, RN’s Defense Secretary who helped end the Vietnam War and implement the all-volunteer military, died November 16 at 94. Prior to his tenure as Defense Secretary, Laird served as a congressman from Wisconsin’s 7th district for nine consecutive terms from 1953-1969.

H

Robert Michel Robert Michel, legendary congressman and House Minority Leader, died February 17 at 93. Of his relationships spanning decades with nine U.S. Presidents, he was particularly close with — and had a fondness for — RN. The two met just before RN was elected to the Senate in 1950 and their friendship continued until the President’s death in 1994.

Werner Escher Werner Escher, South Coast Plaza’s longtime global ambassador and cherished friend of the Nixon Foundation, died January 6 at 85. Werner was an essential partner in the Foundation’s programs focused on U.S.-China relations. He provided many laughs and fond memories as a member of the 2013 delegation that retraced RN’s steps in China. LEGACY & VISION
