President Nixon was proud of the National Cancer Act. In his remarks before signing the bill, he said, “I hope that in the years ahead we may look back on this day and this action as being the most significant action taken during this administration.”
The National Cancer Act of 1971
Nearly twenty years later, looking back on the progress the law had achieved in what the media had called, the “War on Cancer” Richard Nixon wrote of the National Cancer Act, “I consider it my most important domestic initiative.”
On December 23, 1971, 250 guests crowded into the State Dining Room of the White House to witness a momentous event: the signing of the National Cancer Act of 1971.
Just eleven months after he first proposed it in the State of the Union address, President Nixon was ready to sign into law a bill that would completely transform the country’s efforts to fight cancer, the second leading cause of deathin the nation.
A Commitment to Hope:
A special exhibit, unveiled during the conference, allowed visitors to experience that decisive moment 50 years ago when the U.S. government took action to develop a “cancure” and its amazing— indeed miraculous— results. With artifacts never before exhibited on loan from cancer centers across the country, visitors experienced how the fight to conquer cancer has transformed and evolved, including lifesaving advances in prevention, detection, and treatment of cancer.
