“HE BROUGHT US HOME.

HE ENDED THE WAR.” — VIETNAM POW CDR. AL AGNEW ON CBS MORNING NEWS

NEARLY 200 POWS FROM THE VIETNAM WAR gathered with Tricia Nixon Cox in front of the President's white farmhouse birthplace to mark 40 years to the day that the Nixons welcomed them home at the White House.

A

n extraordinary, internationally-celebrated reunion of nearly 200 Vietnam POWs took place at the Nixon Library from May 23 to 25, and likely served as their last gathering. The festivities recognized the 40th anniversary of the White House dinner hosted in their honor by President and Mrs. Nixon on May 24, 1973 which remains the largest dinner in White House history.

“They’ve never lost their bond with each other, or with the President, as controversial as the war itself, who negotiated their freedom on the way to ending their war.“ — MIKE TAIBBI REPORTING ON THE NBC NIGHTLY NEWS WITH BRIAN WILLIAMS International media coverage of the events included headline segments throughout Memorial Weekend on Fox News, ABC World News with Diane Sawyer, NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams, both the CBS Morning and Evening Shows and CNN, while C-SPAN was there to capture it all. Stories by the Associated Press were dispatched globally, while local television and print outlets across the country fanned public interest. The excitement kicked off on May 23 when the POWs and their families arrived to cheering crowds in an eight-bus motorcade escorted by the California Highway Patrol, Orange County Sheriffs’ Deputies, fire trucks from local

communities, and Patriot Guard Riders. POWs laid a wreath to honor RN at a ceremony that included a “Missing Man” aircraft flyover, a special performance by award-winning vocalist Tony Orlando of his legendary “Tie a Yellow Ribbon,” and commemorative recognition from the Department of Defense. The POWs regrouped the following evening for an East Room banquet gala. Perhaps most movingly, the gala included a special performance from the POW Chorus, a group of men who composed “The POW Hymn” to honor America while confined in Hanoi’s dungeons. They sang it together for the first time in 40 years. (CONTINUED ON PAGE 5)

FROM THE PRESIDENT Bringing the World to the Library, and taking the Library to the World.

hen the Richard Nixon Library opened 23 years ago, our mission was to attract visitors to Yorba Linda. We soon expanded that focus with year-round conferences, speakers, School Editor Forums, author book signings, and special events in Yorba Linda and D.C. Today, those are only part of our mission. When we opened in 1990, we didn’t have the ability to take RN’s incredible record of achievement to the world—then came the Internet, blogs, Google, and the huge and diverse roster of social media platforms. These online channels got their starts appealing to young people, but today nearly everyone communicates using cell phones, tablets and laptops. Young people get their information and learning using Smart Phones, where they can instantly access anything they want—from driving directions and text books, to term papers and movie tickets. The instant availability of information is overwhelming in quantity, depth and detail—and we’re using it to take RN and his record to the iPhones and earphones of the world. We assembled a 12-minute reel of the favorable press coverage of our POW reunion in May, and the video went viral on YouTube, with more than 70,000 viewings so far. All of our speaker programs are now aired live on YouTube worldwide. Six college interns spent the summer with us developing RN legacy material in the National Archives which we are producing into short four or five minute video storytellers on RN’s vision, decisions and accomplishments. There were more than 600,000 Google searches in the past month alone for information on RN, and we’re working hard to channel these to our online content to make sure readers get the facts. The Nixon Library’s website— www.nixonfoundation.org—is refreshed daily by our communications team, led by director Jon Movroydis. We email One Minute Updates weekly on what’s happening at the Library and in the broader world of the 37th President. We push out our web stories, fun RN/PN anniversary tidbits and engage the world on Facebook and Twitter everyday. Our staff posts photos on Instagram for “behind the scenes” looks at Library events. We sell museum merchandise not only in our onsite store, but on Amazon and eBay. We conduct much of our lucrative event sales on The Knot and Wedding Wire. We use TripAdvisor and Yelp to promote travel to the Library. As we finalize plans for “reimagineering” of the aging galleries of our Library, we’ll make it possible for visitors to engage as they tour with their Smart Phones, to ask questions as they explore, and to hear and see Richard Nixon himself discuss the subjects they’re seeing in the galleries. We’ll design our galleries so they are as compelling and dramatic if you tour online from your living room in Boston or Beijing, as they will be in person in Yorba Linda. And with a click on their phone, visitors will be able to take their custom exhibit experience home or send it to others around the world. This is the museum of the future, and that will be the new Richard Nixon Presidential Library.

he special black-tie dinner that the Richard Nixon Library hosted on May 24 was held 40 years to the day that President and Mrs. Richard Nixon hosted a formal dinner at the White House in honor of our release and return from the North Vietnam prison camps. The warm welcome to sunny California was reminiscent of the enthusiastic welcome we received upon our return to our country and our hometowns 40 years ago. Personally, for me, the anniversary dinner brought back many revered and sentimental memories of that magical evening at the White House. During the 8 ½ years I spent as a POW, I never dreamt I would be having dinner at the White House. But this was not just a dinner – it was an extravaganza with stage show… movie stars… a five-course gourmet meal, and as for me…. romance. The 1973 dinner was when Tammy and I had our first date. It was definitely not a routine, average, everyday type of date. Tammy and I were honored to have John Wayne and his wife sit at our table. The evening was filled with fun, emotions, laughter, tears and just plain joy. We were all overwhelmed. President and Mrs. Nixon were and will always be special to us. We were special to them. We knew that our repatriation to freedom and our return to our loved ones was the direct result of the determination and dedication President Nixon put forth in obtaining our release and securing our return back to the United States of America. John Wayne, for the most part, remained quiet with moments of his eyes blurred with tears. When Tammy asked him why he was tearing, he responded, “I only play a hero, Everett is a hero!” One can only imagine how touched I was to hear that from the “Duke.” We were treated with the utmost respect and generously recognized for our sacrifices. We were humbled and grateful. We were alive and well. We were at the White House. To President Nixon, we owe a lot. That night was definitely a night to remember. Now, 40 years later, Tammy – my bride of 40 years – and I once again sat at a table with distinguished guests, enjoying and savoring another marvelous dinner event. The 40th anniversary dinner was carefully and meticulously planned. This time, President and Mrs. Nixon were missing from the dinner, but their memory lives on which was very evident throughout the celebration and evening. There is no doubt we shall never forget the spectacular events in celebration of our 40th anniversary of our return to freedom. We were POWs once. Once again, we found ourselves celebrating our freedom together and with friends and family of President and Mrs. Richard Nixon. As we did on May 24, 1973, we again stood proudly and sang GOD BLESS AMERICA. It was 40 years ago, when we were honored to have the songwriter himself, Irving Berlin, lead the dinner guests in singing GOD BLESS AMERICA. What an emotional scene that was… And, to each other, we bid a warm farewell… “until next time. GBU!” 3

REMEMBERING THE WEEK THAT CHANGED THE WORLD RETRACING RN'S STEPS OF 1972 The Chinese government hosted a glittering banquet in the stunning Great Hall of the People in Beijing, where RN presided 41 years before.

Christopher Nixon Cox stands atop the magnificent Great Wall in the same spot as his grandparents did 41 years before.

State Councilor Yang Jiechi, one of the most senior members of the Chinese government, toasted the delegation in the Great Hall, to U.S./China friendship.

Jack Brennan and Bud McFarlane spoke about the importance of RN's China initiative; and Foundation President Sandy Quinn offered remarks of goodwill in the Great Hall.

T

he RN Centennial took on an international flavor on A Legacy Journey to China from May 1 to 10, during which grandson Christopher Nixon Cox headed a 45-member delegation to retrace RN’s steps 41 years ago. The delegation was hosted by the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries in Beijing, Hangzhou and Shanghai — the three stops on Nixon’s 1972 trip. “Forty-one years later, another Nixon is back,” proclaimed NBC World News, while other news outlets — both American and Chinese — closely followed the trip, including the AP, the New York Times and the Los Angeles Times. Notables in the delegation included former National Security Adviser Robert “Bud” McFarlane, RN’s Marine Aide Col. Jack Brennan, former Kissinger NSC aide KT McFarland, longtime Nixon confidant and aide Marje Acker,

Chris Cox and wife Andrea planted trees in Hangzhou, just as RN did twice before.

“[My grandfather] said that just as those small saplings could one day grow into mighty trees, he hoped that the seeds of peace planted on his journey would grow into a more enduring structure for peace and security in the Western Pacific.”

and Craig Young, Mayor Pro Tem of Yorba Linda, RN’s hometown. In Beijing, the delegation was hosted by State Councilor Yang Jiechi for a glittering banquet in the Great Hall of the People, the same venue at which Premier Zhou Enlai hosted the Nixons. The delegation’s exciting tour through the capital city also included visits to Tiananmen Square, the Great Wall and Ming Tombs — they even careened through the streets on rickshaws! The tranquil lakeside Hangzhou provided a taste of rural China. Cox planted Sequoia trees in the same spot that RN did in 1972 (and again on a later visit in 1993). In Shanghai, the delegation was welcomed to the Jinjiang Hotel, where the Shanghai Communiqué — the basic, continuing framework of U.S.-China relations — was announced on the original trip. ★

“HE KEPT HIS WORD. AND WE ARE FOREVER GRATEFUL.” — LT. COL. TOM HANTON, President of the NAM-POWs, on Fox News

POWs including (left to right) Cdr. Gary Thornton, Capt. Jerry Coffee and Col. Mike Brazelton, regrouped to celebrate 40 years of freedom.

POW HOMECOMING (CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1) Tricia Nixon Cox spoke so eloquently: “Thank you for your courage, your steadfastness and your patriotism which was an inspiration for so many, including my father, and which will be an inspiration to future generations.” The gathering also included keynote remarks from Congressman Ed Royce, Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, noted POW advocate Ross Perot and video tributes from NAM-POW and Medal of Honor recipient Col. Bud Day, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel and former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, who attended the dinner 40 years ago. “Richard Nixon said that as far as he was concerned, almost everything about ending the Vietnam War was negotiable,” Royce noted, “but one thing wasn’t negotiable and that was the return of our POWs.” The homecoming concluded with a public forum featuring POWs and their memories of the horrific conditions they endured during their years in captivity and their emotional homecomings. The panelists were Cdr. Everett Alvarez, 8-year POW; Lt. Col. Tom Hanton, President of the NAM-POWs and 9-month POW; Capt. Mike McGrath, 6-year POW; Capt. Paul Galanti, 6-year POW; and Dr. Roger Shields,

who coordinated their return under RN. Dr. Frank Luntz, media commentator for CBS and Fox News, moderated. Forty years ago, First Lady Pat Nixon had 126 tables set for nearly 1,300 guests in a giant tent on the South Lawn. The star-studded entertainment included Bob Hope, Sammy Davis, Jr., and John Wayne. The excitement and good cheer continued until well after midnight, and many wept openly when Irving Berlin led a rousing rendition of “God Bless America.” “It had rained all day and much of the evening,” RN later recalled, “but nothing could dampen the high spirits of that night.” ★

The public was treated to fascinating, up-close recollections of POWs at a panel on May 25; the program is regularly aired on C-SPAN.

Tricia Nixon Cox was joined by noted POW advocate and 1992 presidential candidate Ross Perot, left, who delivered keynote remarks, and Cdr. Everett Alvarez, center, the longest-held POW of the entire group.

Honorary POW and music legend Tony Orlando reprised his iconic “Tie A Yellow Ribbon.”

“AS WE SANG, I COULD FEEL PRESIDENT NIXON WATCHING.” For the first time in 40 years, the POW Chorus regrouped to charm those gathered with their emotional "POW Hymn."

LEONARD GARMENT, close Nixon confidant, White House counsel and a top D.C. litigator, passed on July 13 at 89. Nixon sought Garment’s advice and counsel while considering a run for president in ‘68, to which Garment proved pivotal. In the White House, he absorbed a wide variety of duties ranging from human rights to volunteerism to the arts.

CAROLE GREEN, a charter member of the Nixon Library Docent Guild, passed on March 22 at 78. In her nearly 23 years as a Docent, she enjoyed meeting and talking with visitors to the Library from all around the world.

RICHARD “DICK” COOK, the Nixon Administration’s liaison for Congressional Relations and Legislative Affairs, and later corporate Vice President of Lockheed, passed on June 20 at 81. One of the most triumphant and lasting legacies of the Nixon Administration, the passage of the Revenue Sharing Bill in 1972, was due in part to Cook’s efforts.
