Nixon Library Becomes COVID-19 Vaccine Site The Nixon Foundation helps end pandemic by supporting national and statewide efforts to administer vaccines

I

n April, the Richard Nixon Foundation announced that the COVID-19 vaccine would be distributed at the Nixon Library to individuals 16 years and older on an ongoing basis. Working with Albertsons, and in partnership with the Office of State Senator Josh Newman, the Richard Nixon Foundation administered 1,500 doses of the Pfizer COVID19 vaccine to members of the community, regardless of insurance status on April 21st and again on May 12th. The distribution of the vaccine is part of a larger effort amassed by the RNF since the earliest days of the pandemic.

Launched last March, the Nixon Foundation’s Conquering COVID-19 Campaign resulted in: l 41 blood drives collecting 1,800 donated usable units of blood l Regular COVID-19 antibody testing for the general public l Four food drives that fed hundreds of Orange County families l The acquisition of one million disposable face masks l The distribution of 700,000 face masks to Orange County’s small businesses, public and private schools, frontline COVID-19 responders, and veterans groups H LEGACY & VISION

new permanent exhibit in the Nixon Library’s Loker Hall showcases many milestone achievements of women from the 1960s to today. The exhibit also examines the lasting impact of President Nixon’s ratification of the landmark Title IX legislation that established equal Federal financial assistance for women’s sports at public schools and universities. With detailed, behind-thescenes accounts, the exhibit sheds new light on President Nixon’s role in ensuring women had more representation in the executive branch in his administration, and how those women, in turn, helped to level the playing field for women across the country. H

B

arbara Hackman Franklin was appointed by President Nixon to lead a

coordinated effort to recruit women for high-level, policy-making positions. No administration in history had attempted such an initiative before. Within one year, Franklin’s efforts led to triple the number of women placed into policy-making positions. More than 1,000 women were advanced into mid-level government positions women had never held before, such as sky marshals, tug boat captains, FBI agents, and forest rangers. In 1992, Franklin was sworn in as the 29th Secretary of Commerce under President George H.W. Bush, becoming the highestranking woman in the George H.W. Bush administration. In 2017,TIME named Secretary Franklin one of the “50 Women Who Made American Political History.”

“In this Administration we have firmly espoused the rights of women, and we must now clearly demonstrate our recognition of the equality of women by making greater use of their skills in high level positions... Our efforts to date in appointing women have offered some encouragement. However, I am convinced that we can and must do better.” — PRESIDENT RICHARD NIXON
