STORIES FROM THE
WAR HOSPITAL
STORIES FROM THE READ ABOUT THE EXTRAORDINARY LIVES AND LOVES OF MEN AND WOMEN AT A WAR HOSPITAL A CENTURY AGO
WAR HOSPITAL
The City of Leeds Training College had been built not long before hostilities started, and in 1914 it was established as the 2nd Northern General Hospital. Wounded soldiers replaced trainee teachers, and the Red Cross flag was hoisted above what is today part of Leeds Metropolitan University. These fascinating true stories of sick and wounded soldiers, nurses, doctors and volunteers are a tribute to the great courage and determination of those who suffered terribly, those who worked all hours and those who saved so many lives in the most difficult of circumstances. Gathered together after interviews with descendants and research in local and national archives, the material in this book is a valuable contribution to our understanding of the First World War in Leeds and in the whole country.
When the Red Cross flag was hoisted at Beckett Park, the Army moved in.
