Site Location: Casbah Square,Tang[i]er,Morocco [Photoshop] The TRANSLATorium seeks to slip between an amalgamation of Michel Serres' emblematic spatial vignettes into a single entity. Coupled with functioning as a device of translation, the program contrives to be centre of translation where its [process] methodologies are disseminated. Serres’ emblems become coupled with ROOMS of translation where Inter-linguistic, Intra-linguistic, Inter-semiotic, symbolic & ethnocentric characteristics of culture are the focal points of exploration. The program operates as six centres of exploration within the dense field and environments of Tang[i]er. The etymology of this program is derived from an architectural exploration of the literary work of Michel Serres. He postulates a collection of six emblematic vignettes which are to be understood as both a topology of the J’eu de L‘oie as well as spatial variety in the urban field. By furthering this structure of exploration, dense fragments of this field were collected and become interpreted through the suggested program.

This thesis seeks to exploit the possibilities and excavate an architecture from the slips and fields of contradictions, be they spatial, material or programmatic. The program is set out to reappropriate local intelligences'. To regulate the current mediating agents of the city whilst concurrently deploying a new set of dynamic spatial operators manifested in architectural interventions that slip between the city and the body, assuming the role of mediator between the two. In turn, tasking the translators [the students of the TRANSLATorium] with a renewed objective, a search for the 'intermediating' language.

The materialistic qualities of the suggested program are derived from a desire to translate the constructional language of my instillation piece of first semester where rope and counterweights were employed to create an object in controlled transition. These materials manifestation in the TRANSLATE_ORIUM are varied in both form and function. Tensile fabric ropes of various pigments are deployed in the facade design to act as shading devices as well as safety rails. A hoist system utilizes a counterweight principal to provide an externally orientated vertical circulatory system. Internal, non load bearing walls are formed from woven screens of rope which hint at segregation yet remain punctuated to allow for passage of light, sound etc. A rope pattern is used in the formwork of the main concrete support column to further emphasis the desired [rope] language. All the above material techniques weave together between the circular tubular steel frameworks whose position and formation is derived from an exploration of the sectional slices of the urban fragments created earlier in my design process.

Exploratory model of strucutural framework for Large Scale Exhibition.

The fragmented nature of the mediators deployed by the TRANSLATorium to converse with the identified Serresian vignettes throughout Tangier inspired my proposed final exhibition. Here, the academic limb of the TRANSLATorium is the focal point of the centers and the extended bodies its points of interest within the urban field. Similarly to the modus operandi of this program, the FRAGMENTED MEDIATION exhibition seeks to establish a central, translatory figure. It is up to the observer to agree to enter into conversation with the piece by assuming this pivotal role where the chair device is the translator and the table is the framework from which the fragments of the project offer insights into the thesis. These fragments' [drawings, models, film, chair] are the aggregates which have been folded and refolded, as the baker manipulates the 'dough', in order to illustrate my pre-occupation.

This thesis explored the notion of the department store typology and how one could disperse it so that it might become a fragmented entity. This new architectural typology would serve to reinvigorate an urban quarter. Its a criticism of the modern day shopping mall which detracts consumers from the city centre. It could be though to operate in a similar fashion to Jon Jerde's Horton Plaza design in San Diego, where the scheme takes a direct route through the city block establishing a new relationship between downtown and the waterfront. This fragmentation allows for a greater intimacy in the retail experience, similar to that of the Eastern Bazaar, where one is greated with a caliphiscope of colour and a cacophony of sound.

Site Location: Youghal, Co. Cork

Third Year [Re_Reading] This project was concerned with the question of re-inhabitation. The site was an abandoned former textiles factory in a sea side resort. The brief called for the construction of a library, a building that would become a new social centre within the declining sea side town. I opted to re-use the existed structure and through a serious of models explored methods of re-reading, inhabiting and in some cases penetrating it so as to create a environment conducive to the process of reading and study. The layout also had to remain flexible so that it could enforce the feeling of perusal and perambulation in order to entice locals to interact with the library.

The ability to highlight the potential of the architects designs through 3D renderings were essential in convincing the client.

Photoshop would also be used on numerous projects to enhance 2D elevations, sections and plans for City + Council planning packs.

This scheme was a proposal for a series of revamped ground floor units at the rear of an existing apartment block in Cork City.
