Room at the Table Spring 2017 Third Year Studio Birmingham, AL, USA The culinary industry in Birmingham, Alabama is growing rapidly as part of a widespread cultural renaissance and return to downtown. In 2017, Food & Wine Magazine moved its editorial headquarters to Birmingham, and in 2018, Birmingham chefs and bartenders received three James Beard nominations. In the last 10 years, pockets of mixed-use development have grown throughout the downtown corridor. Along with this growth comes a number of undesirable side effects, including loss of neighborhood identity, diversity, and affordability. In this studio, we were challenged to address these issues within a semi-temporary shipping container structure.
Rich Fridy Portfolio
As gentrification occurs downtown, many of the minority-owned restaurants that form the foundation of Birmingham’s culinary heritage are forced to relocate or close due to rising rents. Rent prices also affect young chefs preparing to open new concepts. Working as a barista in Birmingham for three years, I developed a strong personal connection to this tightknit community. In this project, I have proposed a culinary incubator that provides low-rent or rent-free temporary cafe/restaurant space on one of Birmingham’s busiest corners. As new restaurant concepts and young restauranteurs use the space, they can leverage this visibility to gain investors, test menu iterations, and grow a dedicated clientele.

In choosing a site for this project, major considerations were walkability, easy access to parking, proximity to popular cultural institutions and new development, and street frontage. The intersection of 3rd Ave. N. and 19th St. experiences high levels of vehicle traffic, and is positioned at the center of a key pedestrian area, due to its proximity to three theaters, the McWane Science Center, and the Pizitz Food Hall. In many cases, visitors to these cultural institutions must pass the proposed site on their way to and from their cars in the large parking lot and multi-story garage fronting 4th Ave. N. The site also sits adjacent to a tree-lined section of the Civil Rights Heritage Trail, which forms a pocket-park barrier between the site and 19th St.

The shipping container structure and surrounding hardscaping and landscaping occupy a formerly under-used single-aisle parking lot. To the left of the lot is a colorful mural honoring Birmingham's musical history on the side of a block of buildings that contain varied small programs including a restaurant, coffee shop, graphic design agency, dance studio, and furniture store. To the right is a tree-lined section of the Civil rights Heritage Trail, which isolates the buildings from the vehicle traffic on 19th St. The park's concrete benches will provide additional seating for the culinary incubator during busy lunch rushes.

To address the shipping containers' low ceiling height, a second container placed above the main dining space provides natural light and views to the rooftop garden and deck. A 16' bookshelf provides space for each restaurant concept's themed artwork and decor, and hides two air conditioning units that are housed in the top shipping container's overhang.

Gestalt Chair Fall 2017 Furniture & Millwork Studio Birmingham, AL, USA
The chair is often an iconography to larger themes present in the architecture of a given era. As themes shift, chair designs morph, and provide a microcosmic timeline of these larger themes. “Gestalt Chair explores a selection of chairs ranging from Art Nouveau to modernism to contemporary, and contrasts forms,
dimensions, and joinery styles. A new chair is then created that builds upon the styles of the previous chairs, creating a new chair form. The project illustrates and replicates the process of idea formation from past observation, and suggests that new styles develop from minor shifts and corrections to existing ones.

Lake Shore Drive Spring 2017 Third Year Studio Birmingham, AL, USA
Mies Van Der Rohe’s Lake Shore Drive apartment buildings sit on one of the most elite waterfront blocks in Chicago. Although many Miesien housing blocks have recently been abandoned and demolished to make way for larger luxury units, Lake Shore Drive’s continued popularity can be attributed to the relative affordability of the units, and their flexibility as a result of the simple 21-foot grid structure within which they sit. Multiple residents in the buildings have combined units to grow one-bedroom apartments
to three- and four-bedroom units, employing a modular flexibility that was perhaps implemented ahead of its time. This project explores the vertical combination of units through the demolition of the connecting floorplate—a mode of combination that opens up the 8-foot ceiling height of the existing units into a larger 16-foot atrium space—and the use of built-in, moveable, and multi-use furniture to allow functional flexibility based on the intended use of the space.

Solo Project Brief
The interior design program’s senior thesis module, called “Design Education for World Impact”, aims to instruct students of best practices of working with clients in developing communities. The module is split into two sections. In the first, students are given a short prompt and a simple site topography—replicating the format of many of the academic projects completed over the course of the program. The second expands the project to a format that relates more to legitimate professional practice, incorporating client meetings,
interviews, site observation, travel, and a single group deliverable. By designing the same project in these two methods, the differences between designing in- and out-of-context is highlighted. I have entitled these two sections “Solo” and “Juntos”, the Spanish words for “alone” and “together”. The final presentation of the project incorporates the individual students’ “Solo” typologies and methods—discovered in a vacuum— and compiles them into a single solution, developed “Juntos”.

In our research and interviews with future residents, we found that many elderly people feel isolated in their current living situations. Many live in small high-rise condos or garage apartments, which provide limited connection to the broader community. When discussing possible solutions to this problem, we assumed privacy and tranquility would be important to future residents. We initially suggested providing secluded large private residences with small shared
common spaces. The response to this was negative, and many future residents equated the concepts of privacy and tranquility with loneliness. As a result, we limited living space within the residences and oriented the entire building around an elevated covered plaza with panoramic views to the north. The plaza connects public and private zones, and encourages resident interaction when moving to and from meals and activities.

Bright and spacious dining spaces contrast with the relative compactness of living spaces to encourage residents to spend time in public areas.
The large communal living room features a variety of seating postures and arrangements, from reading nooks to large card tables. The space also features a shared kitchen area with views to the adacent elementary school playground— a request from the future residents we interviewed.

Design Discovery Harvard GSD Summer 2019 Instructor: Grace Suthata Jiranuntarat Design Discovery is a six-week program at the Harvard Graduate School of Design that provides a first-hand studio-based exploration of graduate-level architecture education. Across three projects, the program teaches an overview of design thinking in two- and three-dimensions, and encourages further exploration of current topics in contemporary architecture through access to current students, lecturers, the Frances Loeb library and online databases. Through the program, students “discover how design contributes to a more resilient, just, and beautiful world.

In this exercise, an object, a building, and a landscape are cropped to isolate the context of a dialectic—ordered/ entropic, light/shadow, and permanent/ impermanent. In plan, I represent erosion and the resulting sand over centuries or millennia. In elevation, I analyze layers of rock as a way to map surface texture. In section, I juxtapose the grasslike seasonal vegetation that grows between the rocks with plant fossils inside the rock, illustrating two opposing phenomena of the same element.

Interpolation
Rich Fridy Portfolio
The cropped views from the first part of the exercise analyze the passage of time at multiple scales, from the 4-minute brew process of the Moka Pot to the millenia-long fossilization process inside the rocks of Tanner Fountain. Here, I aim to create a new space that re-interpolates this data. Where originally the goal was analysis of time passage, the interpolative goal has shifted to manipulation and exploitation of it. The new space imagines a system of arches spread between
two rock masses. As the space between the rock masses narrows, the distance between the rows of arches narrows, and the widths of the individual arches diminishes. At its narrowest, the wall openings are 3-feet wide and are offset 3-feet from one another, making some areas of the system difficult to traverse and others simple. The arches superimpose a paralax confusion/ frustration between the two rocks—almost an antilabyrinth.

This project reimagines the drawings from the previous project, and requires the design of circulation and inhabitation within the confines of a volumetric space. The project aims to test spatial effects and experiment with narrative sequence, spatial hierarchy,
and boundaries. The resulting space further explores the rectilinear system of elements spread between two topological surfaces, choreographing a circulation narrative that utilizes openness and tightness to guide the user from one corner to the other.

Rich Fridy Portfolio
How can architecture encourage engagement and interaction at a variety of scales between people of varying backgrounds? ‘Interpolative Context’ aims to apply the design principles explored in the first two projects to a programmed building on a site. It considers the building at a large scale, as a piece of an urban fabric, which speaks to the surrounding community and potentially welcomes and involves them. It also considers
it at a small scale, made of rooms that play host to interactions and temporary events. The project will be a Center for Civic Engagement located at the south boundary of Harvard where it connects to Allston, an historically working-class community. Considering the two communities, to the north and south of the site, the project focuses on fostering equity, inclusion, and knowledge-sharing.

While analyzing program and developing a spatial hierarchy, I produced a scaled bubble diagram that could be read as a floor plan of a field of rooms of varying sizes. By interposing logics of field conditions and topography from the previous projects and extruding these pieces of program vertically, the
building becomes a field of meeting rooms, galleries, and reflective space— some buried in the ground and others floating in the air—based on the bubble diagram. The resulting design sits at the intersection of building, pavilion, and landscape.

Glazing on the north facade warms the building in the winter and allows in enough sunlight to light the space throughout the day. North mezzanine features views of Mission Mountain range and Flathead Lake.
A custom-designed modular 2x6 wall system hides acoustical panels and can be removed in 4-foot sections for repair or replacement.
The main auditorium and classroom space is heated with radiant tubing and cooled with high-velocity fans. The space triples the client's capacity without increasing energy costs.

The new Polson, MT Club for the Boys and Girls Club of the Flathead Indian Reservation, which will total over 20,000 sf of space, will include youth and teen centers, a cafeteria, classrooms, art and music rooms, and a full-sized gymnasium. The gymnasium, cafeteria, and kitchen
can be isolated from the rest of the building for special events. The front desk will be an important design piece at the center of the double-height entry. I produced and presented multiple iterations of the desk design to the office and client team, and produced the desk's documentation.

1318 Collective Branding and Promotional Print Material Fall 2017
1318 Collective is a multidisciplinary design firm I cofounded in 2016. Its goal is to unite independent young freelancers, mainly college students from graphic design, business marketing, and interior design backgrounds, to work together on multifaceted projects. The company received second prize at the Regions Bank “New Venture startup competition, receiving $5000 in seed money, and has worked with clients from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines.

Why do you exist? No, really. Why?
sharing better stories.
As a startup southern men’s clothing brand, Pete Allen’s founder came to 1318 wanting a fresh, unique brand to complement his company. We gave legs to his vision and helped Pete Allen substantiate its message. In a market segmented by heavy competition, the challenge was to create a visual identity system that would stand out with boldness, yet also be a simple reflection of regional culture.
Complex problem, well-tailored solution.

A story can be found in everything. Sometimes, you just need to look for it. Whether in people or places, ideas or experiences – they’re all related. We believe that brands are comprised of stories and people, and connections happen when the two intersect. Yes, we have a process that works and a

Re-evaluating a Way of Seeing Evaluation: Spring 2014 Re-evaluation: Summer 2019 New York, Miami, Palm Beach
Rich Fridy Portfolio
Project Name
I took these photographs between 2012 and 2014, before I had any formal design education. I took them because I thought they looked cool and otherworldly. I had nearly forgotten about them until 2019, when I stumbled upon a similar photo called “Balconies”, taken by the Bauhaus professor László Moholy-Nagy, paired with a statement about photography being an “invitation to re-evaluate our way of seeing”. Moholy-Nagy’s photography does not aim to distort reality-- it explores the qualities of light, dark, mystery, and decontextualization within reality, inviting the viewer to re-see what they might have missed at first glance. In many ways, I found this statement indicative of my own
Fall 2016
educational experience, and my consideration of the perspectives I adopted over the last six years of my life. In my research, studio work, professional work, and even personal life, I have continually had to re-evaluate and re-learn ways of seeing the world around me. When viewing these photos 5 years after I first edited them, I can re-evaluate my experiences between then and now and consider how profoundly my perspective on these photographs has changed. I look forward to the ways my graduate education can help me again reevaluate my way of seeing the world. Thank you for taking the time to read my portfolio.
