Einkamerer Loft hold South Africa’s name high in the 17th SA Million Dollar Pigeon Race By Thomas Smit - Cell 082 861 5593

cash prize winning opportunities were added to the prizewinning kitty. There are more than 400 different cash prizes per race. Change of Venue For good cause, the venue for the race has moved this year from the premises of Sun City to Linbro Park, North East of Johannesburg. Subsequently the name of the event was changed from the Sun City Million Dollar Pigeon Race to the South African Million Dollar Pigeon Race. Everything else in terms of its owners and management remained the same. The SAMDPR is still presented by Air Sport Internationale, situated in Geneva, Switzerland. The loft complex makes room for more than 10,000 pigeons.

he pigeon named, ‘Shiloh’, entered by Butch and Elma Einkamerer from Schweizer Reneke, snatched away the car in the 4th Car Race against 3,000 of the world’s best pigeons, entered by 36 Countries in the 17th annual South African Million Dollar Pigeon Race. The Einkamerer name is honoured amongst the South African greats in pigeon racing and they humbly give all the glory to God for their achievements.

Meet the Team The million-dollar pigeon race is the brainchild of, veteran pigeon fancier and well-known SA Business Entrepreneur, Zandy Meyer, who is appointed as the South African Race Director. Marion Branford takes care of the international administration at the South African office; Joan Holt is the Events Public Relations Manager. Michael Holt is the Systems Administrator. Champion pigeon fancier and young bird specialist, Corrie Naude manages the training of the pigeons with the assistance of Champion fanciers, Dave Van Der Merwe, Andre Van Wyk and 12 loft helpers. The experienced team of Loft staff ensures that the pigeons are effectively home trained and entered into the race panniers for timeous release on the road training flights and properly prepared for the final day.

About the Race The 17th South African Million Dollar Pigeon Race is in full swing and participants are counting the days towards the final race scheduled for the 2nd of February 2013. Pigeons from 36 countries around the World were entered for this year’s event. There are just short of 3,000 pigeons in training of which 323 pigeons are entered by South African fanciers. Weather permitting, the final race will be held from a distance of approximately 550 kms.

Hot Spot Car Races There are 5 longer pre-final training flights known as Hot Spot Car Races held in a run-up to the final SAMDPR each year.

Prize Money The SAMDPR has paid out more than US$1 Million Dollars, 5 brand new Motor Cars and 10 magnificent gold pendants to the winning fanciers on every single race for 16 years. Every cent due to past winners was paid out on time, which makes this event the race with the proven track record.

Results - Hot Spot (5) Car Race (12th January 2013) The pigeons were liberated at 05h35 from a distance of 356 km in hot conditions. The pigeon named, ‘MJ 1’, entered by Mershed Jedova Alnamlan from Kuwait , won the car in a net flying time of 5Hours 03 Minutes and 55 seconds, less than 3 second in front of the 2nd pigeon, ‘Blacky’, entered by Thomas Konelius from Germany. South Africa’s, EW Solomon, clocked in 7th with his pigeon ‘Wie Is Ek’, and the Partnership of Gaddin Bros (Gigi & Raymond) and Charl Stander scooped up the 8th position with their pigeon Buy and Purchase. The Entry Fee Without having raised the entry fee of US$1,000-00 per pigeon for the past 17th years, the SAMDPR did not charge a perch fee to train and feed the pigeons, yet the overgenerous cash prize package has remained unchanged. In fact, more

The pigeons were liberated at 05h20 from a distance of 303 km in rather humid and hot conditions. The pigeon named, ‘Shiloh’, entered by Loft Einkamerer, snatched the car away in a net flying time of 4Hours 14 Minutes and 44 seconds, less than a second in front of the 2nd pigeon, ‘Cast A Shadow’, entered by Hans Hirn from Germany. Manfred Tihen, from Germany, clocked in at 3rd Position. Top performers, Mike Ganus from the US scored two positions- and Gerhard Koopman from the Netherlands scored three positions within the top 20 of this care race. South Africa’s Rockafella Syndicate scored in the 20th position.

The Champion pigeon over the five Hot Spot Car races is officially won by the German pigeon ‘Omat’, entered by the partnership of Horst & Frank Zander with ‘Blue River’ from Atmiks & Soudy from Germany in the 2nd position. South Africa has 2 pigeons that are placed within the top 30 of this category: they are ‘The Dinmont’ entered by Rockafella Syndicate in the 26th position and ‘Natalie D’ entered by Gemsag Canaeries ranks 28th.

Results - Hot Spot (3) Car Race (15th December 2012)

The Auction The day after the main event the top 100 winning pigeons will be auctioned off at Linbro Park. It is not unusual to see these pigeons selling in an excess of R200, 000-00 each. The highest selling record is still held by ‘Birdy’, the best pigeon ever to compete in the SAMDPR. She was auctioned for R800,000-00 to SA businessman, Mark Kitchenbrand.

The pigeons were liberated at 05h30 from a distance of 233 km in normal conditions. The Netherlands’s pigeon ‘Puch’, entered by the partnership of Jan Hooymans – Hu Zhen Yu, won the car with almost three seconds lead, after being 3hours 4 minutes and 36 seconds on the wing. The Hooymans Team also scooped up the 10th position. The pigeon ‘Ewa’ entered by Tomasz Jopek from Poland scored in the 2nd Position. The 3rd position was taken by Slovakia’s, Las Vladimer and Juraj. Gerhard Koopman from the Netherlands again had a brilliant day scoring in the 5th, 6th and 7th positions. South Africa’s Club Stellenberg scored in the 11th position.

The official race winner was unpaid and the US pigeon ‘King Arthur Hees’, entered by Carter Mayotte snatched the car away in a net flying time of 2Hours 44 Minutes and 18 seconds followed by Joe Nemelka from the US with his pigeon ‘Call me Maybe’, in the 2nd position. Saad Alqanem from Kuwait scored in the 3rd position with his pigeon ‘Marzouq 1’.

The pigeon ‘Anita’ entered by Tage Graversen, from Denmark scored in the 3rd position.

South Africa won this category last season with the pigeon ‘Cliff’ entered by the partnership of Fred Brough and Dr Meyer. This year the pigeon named, ‘Blue River’, entered by the German partnership of Atmiks & Soudy is in the lead of Grand Averages Champion pigeon League in the SAMDPR at the time of going to press. Germany has 8 pigeons within the first 20 and South Africa 5 pigeons within the top 50 currently in the lead. The South African Pigeons, ‘Natalie D’ entered by Gemsag Canaeries ranks 15th and ‘Monglow’ from Murrumba Syndicate SA, ranks 18th within this category of best pigeons in the World prior to the final race of the 17th SAMDPR.

Jurie Erwee van Suid-Afrika het die eerste twee duiwe vir Mike Ganus van Amerika aangekoop vir onderskeidelik R150,000-00 en R75,000-00

2,793 Miljoen Dollar Wedvlugduiwe van 36 lande is Saterdag-oggend om 06h00 op Douglas in die Noord Kaap vrygelaat om die 553 kilometer na hul hokke te Linbro Park Noord-Oos van JHB, terug te vlieg. Dit was ŉ sonnige oggend op Douglas tydens die loslating en die wind was aanvanklik nie ŉ faktor nie, maar het stil-stil langs die roete begin opsteek. Voordat die wind of die hitte egter kon pla was die duiwe oor die wenstreep. Dit was wel ŉ strawwe vlug maar ŉ goeie toets vir die kwaliteit van die Duiwe. Die uitslae was op die skerms binne in die Emperor palace geprojekteer en deelnemers kon die beeldmateriaal van die aankomende Duiwe eerstehands waarneem.

Teen R280,000-00 moes Alfons Klaas en sy vennoot Hans Esser van Duitsland hul hand diep in hul sak steek om hul duif wat 3e in die vlug was te behou. Mark Kitchenbrand van Suid-Afrika het R160,000-00 opgedok om die Koeweitse kampioen duif in die 6e posisie aan te koop. Uitslae van die eerste 10 duiwe is soos volg:

Die manne wat in die wenpryse ingeklok het was tevrede, maar sommige het met teleurstelling die saal verlaat. Party het somme gemaak watter broeipare hul volgende keer sal gebruik om beter te teel. Ek wat al oor 2000 duiwe artikels gepubliseer het en al 3 keer met net een inskrywings sonder toelaatbare twee reserwes, al drie keer in die geldpryse ingeklok het, bevel aan: vat jou pak soos ŉ man maar kom terug en doen jou huiswerk, moet net nie bang raak omdat die vlug so groot lyk nie. Niemand kan die vlug met massa inskrywings koop nie, maar deur jou duiwe noukeurig te selekteer sal sukses jou nie kan ontwyk nie.

Die lede van die vennootskap is dit eens dat die duiwe by Dinokeng Hokke uitstekend afgerig word. Die oefenprogram insluitend die “hot spots” is so beplan dat die duiwe optimaal voorberei word vir die finale wedvlug. Om duiwe by Dinokeng Hokke te hê is, aldus die lede van die vennootskap, ŉ aangename ervaring en daarom gaan hulle weer duiwe vir die 2013 wedvlugte inskryf. Willie voel egter dat die inname nooit meer as sowat 1 200 duiwe moet wees nie, anders gaan die hokke dieselfde paadjie loop as soveel ander internasionale een-hok-wedvlugte. Die enigste wenk wat die vennootskap aangebied het hoe die wedvlugte verbeter kan word is om die “hot spots” soos die finale wedvlug te hanteer, mits daar genoeg belangstelling is. Ek het die vennootskap gevra waarom hulle duiwe by Dinokeng Hokke ingeskryf het. Hulle het die volgende beweegredes genoem:

Die wedvlug is baie goed in die Pretoria Wedvlugduiwe Federasie bemark en dit het hulle belangstelling geprikkel.

“Willie Venter en Vennote” bestaan uit Willie Venter, Wynand Venter, Piet Swanepoel en Ferdie Groenewald wat elk ŉ 25% aandeel het. As deel van Pigeon Friends het hulle gedurende 2012 die tweede plek in beide Dinokeng Hokke en SAPIR met dieselfde familie duiwe gevlieg. Hierdie artikel gaan egter oor prestasies by Dinokeng sodat ons hoofsaaklik daaraan aandag sal skenk. Vir hulle tweede plek by Dinokeng Hokke het die vennootskap R210 000.00 verdien.

Daar is heelwat geleenthede om goeie pryse te wen. Dit is ŉ puik geleentheid om die duiwesport saam met ander duiwevriende te geniet. Willie Venter het die vraelys wat ek aan hulle gestuur het om te voltooi met die volgende gevleuelde woorde afgesluit (effens geredigeer om by die doel met die artikel aan te pas):

Duitse Leeu, die duif wat vir die vennootskap so puik gevlieg het, is 25% De Norre, 12% Janssen, 12% Putterie en 50% Xavier Oswald, Duitsland. Die De Norre bloed is afkomstig uit ŉ duif wat Willie by Johan King gekoop het. Die Putterie en Janssen bloed kom van ŉ duif wat deur D du Plessis van die PWDF uit Gert Coetzee se Putteries en Cyril Leibach se Janssens geteel is. Die kombinasie van “rasse” is gekies op grond van faktore soos die vermoë om in warm weerstoestande op afstande van 600km en meer te presteer, deursettingsvermoë, vorige konstante prestasies van voorouers, spierkwaliteit en die vermoë om vinnig na ŉ moeilike wedvlug te herstel.

“Almal moet egter onthou dat op die dag moet geluk vir jou glimlag, dat wanneer daar soos met Dinokeng ŉ klompie duiwe gelyk by die huis aankom jou duifie so gou as moontlik moet klok. In ons geval was ons duif tweede deur die klok. Duiweboere vergeet egter baie gou van die ander duiwe wat saam eerste by die hok was. Iets om oor na te dink en nederig te bly.” n

Willie en Wynand Venter was die telers in die vennootskap. Piet Swanepoel het ŉ Duitse hen by Ferdie Coetzer gekoop en sodoende die Duitse bloed tot die teelskema bygevoeg. Ferdie Groenewald het as duiwevriend tot die vennootskap toegetree. Willie, Piet en Ferdie vlieg in Eureka Wedvlugduiweklub in die Pretoria Wedvlugduiwe Federasie. Die resultaat van die insette van die verskillende lede van die vennootskap was die duif genaamd Duitse Leeu. Duitse Leeu is op vyf-en-dertig dae ouderdom na Dinokeng Hokke geneem. Hy is nie vooraf teen enige siektes behandel nie omdat dit by die hokke gedoen word.

At my age, you have gotten to the stage where you have been there, seen it all, and bought the T-shirt but still hoping that something original is going to show up. So an encounter with the professor soon pricks your ears up and get you learning things that you would not have even thought to investigate.

The former fancier will be glad to settle for mediocre, while the latter will want to win. For this man, Derick is your man! So Professor, help me in my quest to be a winner! Gentlemen you need good pigeons! Breed from proven stock. In my case I say breed a multiples winner with multiple winner(or the purchase of such) and then you will be on the right track. Then furthermore, if you cross one family of GOOD PIGEONS with another; don’t leave it there; wait until you make a second cross, ‘oumaat’ – that is a cross with yet another good family – and then you will see “dynamite”. Those birds will work for you.

2. Another thing: Our pigeons are often too fat. Do you know just how much (or how little) a pigeon needs to survive on? Very little in fact - at least 15 grams of food twice a day – and that is all. 3. Do not over-populate the loft. Ideally, birds should cover a loft space of at least two cubic metres per bird. Remember, Lou Wouter won the Antwerp Yearling Champion award (out of 600 members) with as little as six pigeons. So, select your race team until the amount of pigeons in your loft is correct. 4. Pigeons need love and security. Many people forget this. It should be as if your pigeons are flying home to you on a race day. Here Derick pauses to illustrate the point. He shows me carpets strewn around a section of the racing loft (a loft comprising some 16 compartments) where he hand-feeds his birds. He literally sits down there on the floor with them (and here I thought he was a busy man!) and has them eating around him on the carpet. Evidence of the benefits of these extra lengths was shown when he caught numerous pigeons for me to inspect; they did not flutter around all over the place but took his handling very calmly – which helped me a lot, what with my pigeon-lung problem. He touched on other things in his didactic manner, touching on things like training tosses, vaccinations and how to work with your race teams – a juggling of the pigeons from one race to the next, making sure all the birds get their turn – and that you’re not jumping them to unreasonable distances on the alternate dates. With Derick you can ask questions about things – he is a man with a ready answer. In your wanderings you sometimes get wrong advice and you sometimes discard birds which you should not have – because of this type of eye, or that type of wing etc. but I have always found Professor’s advice (and sometimes over the phone) very sensible.

He has a catalogue issued each year listing a great deal of pigeon products from all the trends in medicine, equipment and babies from prized stock. He is a man, I believe, who should be invited to the various districts around the country to lecture on pigeon racing. Not only are lectures like these informative (Oh yes, of course, some of us can’t be taught much more on the sport) but with the subjects at hand and the gathering of the audiences, the perfect stage could be set for discussion, proposals, administrative suggestions, as well as his main theme “the technical aspect” of the sport. Like Charles Glass, I am not easily impressed, but this guy certainly does it for me – and he is so approachable – just a phone call away too. Let’s hear more from this guy.

or many fanciers, the alluring part of our sport lies in breeding the pigeons, which are successful. The racing, though important, is done mainly to test the results of breeding. In previous articles of this series, we have tried to identify – as far as that is possible – the pigeons that possibly could become the parents of such successful racers. But our task would not be complete without a final few words about how to use these breeders and the actual production of successful racers. We touched on some mating methods and the significant role these play in the production of good racers. When talking about breeding, there are a few phenomena and terms that are often discussed, attacked or defended. Two of these being hybrid vigour or more correctly, heterosis and progeny testing.

animal when compared to other animals of the same species, when all are kept under the same conditions. It is a relatively easy task when dealing with commercial produce-delivering animals, but extremely difficult in the case of racing pigeons. In a progeny-testing establishment, the essentials are that the conditions for all the test animals must, as far as possible, be equal. Feed (amount and quality), housing, population density etc must all be the same whereas in a pigeon loft there are so many variables that the information gleaned from race results can easily be misinterpreted. In reality, pigeon fanciers automatically do a certain degree of progeny testing when they compare the performances of youngsters from one stock bird to those of another. With this information to hand they then breed from the birds that have in past years shown that they are able to breed exceptional pigeons. However, because each participating fancier has a different management style, there are so many influences on the result of a race, that it becomes extremely difficult to draw logical conclusions.

What these terms mean, what benefits they hold and why they might be needed, needs to be investigated. Hybrid vigour or heterosis.

Pigeons that are raced from a One-Race-Loft (ORL) are probably the nearest that pigeons get to being subjected to a proper progeny test. (We understand that fanciers do not enter an ORL competition to test their birds. As far as they are concerned, they send their best youngsters, bearing in mind the expected conditions. However, the difference with progeny stations is that the fancier himself is credited with the performance of his birds and the achievements of one fancier are often compared with those of another. The results of the race can therefore be viewed as an indirect progeny test, grouping all a fancier’s stock together as one entity.)

Whenever two specimens from pure lines were paired together, it is done with the intention of profiting from the expected heterosis. The phenomenon describes the improvement in any particular trait seen in the offspring when two lines or two families are mated together. When, under normal circumstances, the offspring would have been at the midpoint between the parents for that particular trait, they are now above the midpoint. A few points in this regard, need consideration: To be able to measure the degree of heterosis it is necessary that a performance value be given to the parents and subsequently to the offspring. In pigeons, this value must be based on racing results and in racing pigeons; this is extremely difficult as there are so many factors that play a role in the outcome of a race.

One-Race-Lofts The objective of a progeny test is to compare the offspring of one breeding pigeon against those of another. The number of youngsters to be tested from each stock pigeon must therefore be, more or less, the same. In ORLs’ there is no selection prior to a race or training flight; all the pigeons must go (excepting the obviously unhealthy or injured ones). The management for all the birds is the same, i.e. the housing, feed, treatment, exercise, number of tosses and previous races etc. are all the same. However, all fanciers are aware that the condition (and form) of pigeons, which can play a huge role in determining the racing ability of pigeons at any specific moment, moves in cycles. Because the condition and form are not constant, ups and downs in racing results are to be expected. The other huge influencing factor is the weather. Though the same for all contestants, it is well-known that certain pigeons families fare better under specific weather conditions than other and that some birds can, for instance, be devastating in fair weather but fail totally in inclement weather.

1. Heterosis is not all it is cracked up to be. In domestic stock, the degree of heterosis for various traits, depending on the species, ranges between 0 and 25%. The 25% increase is extremely rare and the improvement for most traits is in the 5 to 10% range. 2. Heterosis or hybrid vigour is where you find it. Though it is most commonly seen when pure lines are crossed, it does not automatically follow that it will always occur. (Occasionally one can even see out breeding depression.) Neither is heterosis limited to pairings from two inbred lines. Progeny testing The effectiveness of all breeding can only be measured if a controlled progeny test, in our case for racing success, is done. The test consists of measuring any trait in a particular

We realize that most fanciers racing from their own lofts, do their own progeny testing, as seen above and that even though their judgement might not be one hundred percent accurate, yet they do manage to identify the better racers and through them, the better breeders. Different systems, usually all based on points gained during the races, are used for this purpose.

In the end, it is a judgement call, really. Whether or not certain pigeons should be kept over is best left to each individual fancier who knows his pigeons and who was most intimately involved with their preparation and training. He will likely be the most correct. And that fancier will know whether or not his birds at stock are good enough or whether new introductions need to be made. But, no matter who you are as a racing fancier, the claim that, “Only the foolish expect better results if everything, breeders included, is always kept the same”, has a great amount of truth and needs to be kept in mind. It is always a good idea to introduce better stock into your breeding team.

In addition, all racers that survived the race programme have already been selected to some extent and indicate that their parents could be amongst the better breeders. At the end of the season, the fancier must add together the total number of points scored by the offspring of any stock bird and divide that figure by the number of races the birds participated in.

However, at the same time, it is totally illogical to do so if the present breeders were not given a fair chance to show their worth. Doing that would be like going around in circles. To prevent the possibility of that happening and to be able to identify your better breeders, a good progeny-testing plan is essential. Otherwise, the danger of succumbing to the alluring adverts for ‘super pigeons’ in pigeon magazines, or falling for the beauty or write-up of a fancied bird at one of the many auctions, is likely to be overpowering.

This will give him a co-efficient for that breeder, which can then be compared to those of the other breeders. To use only this simple calculation is not enough however, as special significance must still be given to the more important races, like a National or Union race, that any bird excelled in. In addition, there are various factors, which can distort the final co-efficient; for instance, one fantastic flier in the group may give both the sire and dam a better-than-deserved co-efficient point. On the other hand some birds, particularly those that are being prepared for the long distance events, are sent to shorter races only as part of their ‘prepping’ programme and these ‘races’ could be seen as training tosses. However, the system is a useful guide to determining the value of any stock bird.

Beware; in the search for better stock, there is always the danger of, “Throwing out the baby with the bathwater”. In other words, be hesitant about culling stock pigeons to make room for new introductions before the old stock has been thoroughly proven. This can easily occur if one succumbs to the adverts of ‘fantastic’ pigeons and their promised victories. (I counted 42 ads for ‘pigeons for sale’ in one week’s edition of a popular British pigeon magazine!) So, bring in new stock but to safeguard oneself when doing so, old stock should not be discarded - until the new introductions have shown themselves, without doubt, to be superior and that should be over at least two years of testing.

Who should stay? Most fanciers, when they look at the season’s results, wish to eliminate every pigeon that has failed to perform. This can create problems, as inadequate training, underlying disease with loss of form, inclement weather; slow developing birds etc. often play a decisive role on the result sheet. So the difficulty with holding over the right birds for next season is complicated by a few situations.

Year to Year

Firstly, there is the age at which pigeons mature. If you are successful at the longer distances your pigeons are likely of the slower maturing variety and as yearlings they will hardly have developed to perform at anywhere near their full potential. Removing such yearlings from your team would thus be illogical. On the other end, with the emphasis nowadays on ORL’s, the drift is moving towards faster-maturing pigeons ones that can reach their best at 6 to 12 months of age. This must be brought into the reckoning when the results of one group are compared against those of another.

“Every year is a racing year”, it is said, “but not every year is a winning year”. After a lifetime in the sport, we find that this is still very true and that there is a vast amount of pigeon racing data that awaits unravelling. In some years fantastically good racing is experienced but in the next, following the same programme, with pigeons from the same stock and with the same preparation, one is only just better than average. All of which just goes to show that even though the birds were bred out of the same stock, the quality of the babies, year after year, is not necessarily always the same. Outwardly the youngsters might be identical to previous years but the unidentifiable homing instinct and racing ability – call it what you will – is not present to the same degree. So having gone through a year when the racing results were not as expected, do not be hasty to discard the stock.

A further conundrum is created when, in the search for the better breeders, the results of the offspring are compared. There are namely two groups of racers that need special attention where the abilities of individuals within one group could be totally different from that of the other. Example: In Group One are the pigeons that for weeks and months do nothing noteworthy but then, out of the blue, come right to the fore and win a big championship. In the Group 2 are those pigeons that, in the whole season, do not win but are never late either. They perform well in the loft and win many club places. Question is, “Which is better? Which of these racers should be kept and should the breeders of these birds be retained in the stock loft? In other words, how does one select the preferred breeders; the ones breeding the really exceptional winners on rare occasions or the ones regularly breeding consistent racers?”

World-famous fanciers such as Jos van Limpt (de Klak) of the Netherlands was fond of selling the parents of his super racers because he was of the opinion that they were not likely to repeat their successes. (Besides which the sale of champion birds netted him a fair amount of money).

at slower races as well as a few breeders for the faster races. Though it is not likely that you can cover for all situations, a spread of capabilities is necessary. There is a mysterious factor (hither-to unknown) that sometimes plays a role in racing, as hinted at in the previous paragraph. On the day, that one fancier wins a race in his club, the same happens to his friend in another club when he also wins, with the nest mate who had been gifted to him as a baby. How often has this not occurred and why does it happen? Easily glossed over with the glib statement “horses for courses”, it remains a puzzle. What factor in the conditions would it be that suit a bird so much that it wins, whilst the same factor suits a nest mate equally? Or would it be just co-incidence?

My own experience is that good stock birds regularly breed good racing pigeons but only every now and again – once in a lifetime perhaps – produce a champion. Because, make no mistake, a champion is an exception and very few of those ever see the light of day. Do Looks count? Finally, looks can do wonders. In mankind they give film stars a kick up the ladder, get you the girl of your choice (if you play your cards right), ease your way into a job and generally can make one’s life easier and more pleasurable. But in all, it is only a start. Acting ability, work ethic, human kindness and decency coupled to intelligence, hard work, perseverance and discipline, prevail in the end to decide one’s life and status. In pigeondom, it is no different.

Yearlings or Older Birds? Can one rate the parents on performances of yearlings? In my opinion that would be highly risky, particularly if one had success at long distance races in mind. When the going gets tough and the distance to be flown is far, the situation very often calls for pigeons with experience. Having travelled the road before, two-year old and older birds seem to be better able to handle adverse conditions. Better, at braving the conditions of cold, heat, headwind, rain and mist, they seem to have ‘learned’ about sleeping out at night. Certainly better than yearlings. Could it be that they have learned to ‘keep back’ something in reserve on the first day, which enables them to continue on the next morning? Having said that, I stand amazed at performances in races of up to 8/900km sometimes put up by younger birds. These pigeons are often just 6 or 7 months old and were bred in the same year in which they race. (In our area, these races usually take place during the second half of the season when it is early summer with warmer daytime temperatures. But the explanation for these results could be the subject of a completely new discussion; into which we will not delve at this stage).

Many stock birds are tried because of their good wing design, soft feathering, elastic muscles, and intelligent look and so on. But the proof is in the performance of their young. Not in how they look or feel in the hand, though that would add to their desirability, but how they perform in the races. And that, as we have seen, is largely dependent on their ‘intellect’, their drive, their will to persevere, all of which are totally invisible. And which, together with all the physical traits, depend in the main on the genetic formulation inherited from the parents. And that – on the parents, that is - is where the emphasis must be placed. Do Family Count? A family history is extremely valuable and should be cherished, both in humans and in pigeons. It can provide a futuristic vision of the results that could reasonably be expected from members of the family. There have been occasions in the past where complete outsiders, with no history of family achievements, have produced exceptional champions. But, and this is the crucial point, these are exceptions. One should never aim for exceptions nor place your confidence on the performance of exceptions. ‘Apples do not fall far from the tree’ and when given a choice of pigeons for breeding it is safer to choose a lesser looking one from a proven good family rather than the best one from a poor family. Never aim for the exception. In general, it is difficult to achieve success in life and to improve one’s chances of success; one should endeavour to arrange the odds in your favour.

With the modern emphasis on ORL’s it would seem that earliermaturing pigeons are becoming more and more sought after and that the stock whose youngsters perform only as adults, are being slowly phased out. Should one wish for these earlymaturing yearlings, the move is sound, as long as it is recognized as such and that pigeons who reach their peak at 2 years or later, are looked at differently and given the opportunity to develop to full maturity before their parents are rated. What makes a Champion? One question that is often debated, is, “When is champion a champion?” The answer depends for the greater part, on the owner. In the case of a fancier that wins only one or two races in a season in his Club, any pigeon that wins three races is a champion. But to the very good fancier that annually wins 20 races in his Club, a three-time winner would be good, but hardly champion material. For that, he would have to win three Union races. And the same for the stock birds that bred them. It is entirely relative to the fancier’s other breeding birds and his rating against the other fliers in his Club or Union.

Always choose the best breeders that you can afford; choosing the best from an established family is the quickest way of ensuring success. But keep in mind the important principles; as far as it is possible select from the family that has proven its success in the area that you live and has been subjected to the management style and distance races in which you are anticipating to compete.

ie 2012 wedvlugseisoen was ŉ besonder moeilike een omdat die weer onvoorspelbaar was. Waar die Noordwestewinde in die verlede die grootste gedeelte van die seisoen Gustav Umberti, Eddie Reynders en gewaai het, kon die wind Johan Duvenhage (Voorsitter). hierdie jaar uit enige rigting waai. Selfs wanneer die weerburo ŉ redelik gunstige windrigting en –spoed voorspel het, kon dit steeds ŉ moeilike wedvlug wees vanweë reën, mis en by tye selfs sneeu iewers op die wedvlugroete. Nogtans het die duiweboere wat alreeds bekend is vir hulle goeie prestasies se duiwe hulle nie in die steek gelaat nie. Hier en daar het ŉ nuwe ster op die horison verskyn. Hier dink ek byvoorbeeld aan Dieter Polomski wat vierde algeheel in die klub geëindig het en daardeur die trofee vir die beste vordering verower het. ZWDK is ŉ redelik groot klub met 24 lede wat begin het, dog soos ŉ mens kan verwag het hierdie getal geleidelik verminder totdat daar net sowat 11 lede vir die laaste wedvlug van die seisoen gemandjie het. Ek lys net die lede wat wedvlugte gewen het hier, alhoewel daar ŉ paar lede was wat redelik goed gevlieg het maar ongelukkig nie ŉ wedvlug kon wen nie. Iewers moet ŉ mens egter ŉ streep trek. required to compete against the world class at Sun City as well as all the one loft races around the country and so Gigi became the owner of some of the best birds on offer from Germany, Netherlands, Canada and Belgium which were in the main, crossed with their local bloodlines as well as breeding the imported birds with winners mated together and birds off champion bloodlines crossed with one another. The results are there to speak for themselves. There have been three wins at Carnival City and two seconds with the winner walking through the traps split seconds ahead with many other positions in the top 10 year after year. The partnership has now won the Klapmuts National loft final 3 times in a short space of time and have entered the SAPIR race twice and won both times. At National Loft South they have won a Bakkie and a Benzing clocking system and flown in the first 10 in the final on numerous occasions. They have also won the Diaz loft race and came ninth in Bloemfontein in the final. At Dinokeng they have managed 47th but their bird was 5th on averages which is also excellent and at Sun City scored a creditable 8th and had second best SA bird that year but won best SA bird flying 16th

Gigi Gaddin and Charl Stander

et me introduce you to probably one of the best and most successful one loft partnerships in South Africa being the Gaddin Bros/Charl Stander team who have a wonderful breeding stud in Nylstroom which is managed by Charl a true champion in his own right. In 2008 a meeting took place at Soetdoorn farm which had been acquired by Gigi at which time Charl and Gigi agreed to the partnership as we know it today. Gigi agreed to build the lofts and both placed their best birds in the stock lofts once completed. In 2009 it was their first season together and they commenced breeding birds to race from the new location as well as breeding quite a number to enter one loft races.

Truly outstanding performances from a Champion Stud managed by a top pigeon man in Charl Stander who is truly a dedicated pigeon fancier if ever there was one. Their amazing performances were recognized by Sanpo and Gigi received a special meritorious award which he richly deserved.

Raymond Gaddin also contributed by placing his best breeders into the stud and from then on Soetdoorn always supplied him with the best of the best which arrangement has been most successful and continues until today. Raymond’s results have been outstanding whilst the results in the two Unions that Gigi/Charl competes in have been most successful winning out of turn.

Their stud has a proven track record and they are now in a position to sell 100 youngsters a year which opportunity should not be missed by those wishing to improve their racing performance. n

Gigi and Raymond have been racing pigeons for almost 60-years having been loft managers to the late Frans Putterie in their youth. What better schooling in pigeon racing could anyone wish for? He gave them youngsters which they treasured and they admit learning the ropes from him. ie lewende legende van Graaff-Reinet, Pierre Els was hierdie jaar vir die 23ste keer die Klub Kampioen van die Merino Posduif Klub. Pierre Els is een van daardie mense wie sinoniem is met die duiwe sport en bereik het wat nie baie ander bereik nie. Tragedie het Pierre nie verby gegaan nie, so na ongeveer 12 weke het booswigte by sy hok ingebreek en 12 van sy duiwe koppe afgeruk, koppe daar gelos en die lywe weg gevat. Dit het veroorsaak dat Pierre 3 wedvlugte nie gevlieg het nie. Steeds was hy beter as die res van die klub.

Soos een van ons klub se 26 lede nou die dag sê, Pierre Els stel die hoogte van die dwarslat, as jy daaroor kan kom, dan is jy goed. Pierre is reeds diep in sy 70 ‘s, maar as jy na sy energie kyk lyk hy nader na 50 toe. Wat skryf ŉ mens van iemand soos Pierre Els, daar was al soveel artikels gedoen oor hom. Ek het besluit om so bietjie ander vrae te vra, so ander hoek van die duiwesport.

Daar kan verskeie redes wees, maar ek dink dat fyn waarneming by die meeste duiweboere kortkom. Kos en water gee is nie genoeg nie. Spandeer tyd om jou duiwe dop te hou vir enige foute of siektes wat kan opduik.

So het my onderhoud met die meester verloop

Ek is ŉ oog man en paar my duiwe op volgens die oë soos ek dit deur die jare uitgewerk het. Ek sal nooit ŉ duif stoet hok toe neem as hy nie die binnesirkel in die oog het nie. By my het duiwe sonder daardie sirkel nog nooit sukses behaal nie. Ek hou nie baie stoetduiwe aan nie want ek teel elke jaar met my beste vliegduiwe ook kuikens. Ek het tans 7 mannetjies in my broeihok, daar is een Putterie, 2 Crussons (Venus), 2 van my vliegduiwe wat ek stoet toe getrek het wat al in die vlieghok goed geteel het en twee duiwe met Sun City bloed in. My wyfies bestaan uit die ou Kampioen Tom Lock hen, Gavin Rous wyfie, 1 Sun City bloedlyn wyfie, 1 Bertus Nel wyfie en 3 wyfies uit my

Wat is die grootste oorsaak van swak prestasie?

Oom se stoetduiwe – waaruit bestaan hulle en hoe teel oom elke jaar, is daar iets waarna oom kyk voor oom op paar en hoeveel kuikens teel oom per paar?

Wat het verander in die duiwesport sedert oom begin het waarvan oom hou en waarvan oom nie hou nie.? Ek hou baie van die moderne vervoerstelsel van duiwe. Dit is so groot verbetering as jare gelede, teen bv. die trein stelsel van die sestigs tot vroeë tagtigs. Ek hou ook baie van ons huidige stelsel van Vrydagaande mandjie (Karoo Wedvlug Unie mandjie alle wedvlugte op Vrydae). Die duiwe is korter in die mandjie en vir my beteken dit dat ek meer tyd het om my duiwe reg te kry vir die wedvlug. Die goed waarvan ek nie hou nie is die vyandigheid wat ek ervaar vanaf sommige duiweboere as jy goed vlieg. Dit is nie openlik nie, maar jy voel dit aan. Die kostes in die sport sal altyd ŉ probleem wees en dan is dit jammer dat die sport so erg “Professioneel” raak want dit beïnvloed die man wat dit nie kan bekostig nie en dit haal die genot uit die sport uit. Oom vlieg elke jaar uitstekend. Is daar iets wat oom doen wat ons ander nie doen nie. Is daar ŉ geheime middel wat gegee word of waaraan skryf oom jou hok se sukses toe? Nee daar is geen geheime middel in die duiwe sport nie, want dan was al die ouens wat dit kan bekostig kampioene gewees. Seleksie is vir my die belangrikste in die duiwesport. Wees streng en moenie na iets anders kyk as jou uitslae nie. Die mandjie is die enigste selekteerder en hy is nooit verkeerd nie. My kuikens kry van geboorte af die beste kos wat ek kan bekostig en geen medisyne nie. Die eerste medisyne wat hulle kry is wanneer ek in April van elke jaar al my duiwe deur ŉ gesondheid

Medikasie – Hoe gebruik oom dit en wat gebruik oom? Ek behandel my duiwe vanaf April elke jaar op ŉ program wat ek self opstel om al die siektes te dek voor ons begin vlieg. In die vliegseisoen behandel ek gereeld vir kanker, maar ander siektes net wanneer ek dink dit is nodig. Ek volg nie altyd ŉ program nie, maar volg sommer my eie waarnemings wat ek moet gee. Ek gebruik meestal Dova produkte. Hoe belangrik is voeding in duiwe en hoe maak oom met kosgee en watter kos gee oom? Ek is baie perfeksionisties wat my duiwe se kos aanbetref. Ek soek my kos voor die seisoen uit en gee die hele seisoen dieselfde kos. Ek haat vrot pitte en al my kos word met die hand uitgesoek om enige vrot pitte uit te haal. Ek gee my duiwe duiwepille as hulle terug keer vanaf die wedvlug om hul herstel te bespoedig. My duiwe kry twee keer per dag kos en ek hou hul gewig dop, gee minder as ek voel hul raak swaar of meer as hulle te lig is.

Best Jaaroud Duif in die klub

vlieghok wat vir my goed geteel het. Ek teel tussen 4 en 6 kuikens van ŉ paar en in totaal tussen 70 en 100 kuikens elke jaar. Ek hou van vroeg teel sodat ek nie Desember maande nog met kuikens in die nes sit nie.

Enigiets anders wat oom in die duiwesport met die lesers wil deel, iets wat oom gevind het ŉ goeie invloed op duiwe het of iets wat duiweboere kan help?

Hierdie jaar het oom in die klub in die beste 0pe duif reeks die beste 9 duiwe gehad, 14 uit top 15 duiwe, hoe is hulle geteel?

Kry vir jou ŉ basiese gesondheidprogram en gebruik dit, gee eerder minder medisyne as wat die program sê as om meer te gee. Kyk wat werk onder jou omstandighede. Onthou duiwe moet by jou aanpas, nie jy by die duiwe nie. Gebruik slegs die uitslag van die mandjie as vir die keurig van die duiwe en niks meer nie.

Ja dis snaaks hoe die lewe loop. Die Kampioen duif in die klub en unie, asook die 5de beste duif in die klub was altwee slagoffers van die inbraak by my hok gewees. Hy het egter so goed gevlieg dat hy na 12 wedvlugte van die jaar ŉ onaanvegbare klomp punte opgebou het wat hom die kampioen duif gemaak het. Die kampioen OPE duif – ZA 10 GRT 971 was geteel in my vlieghok uit ŉ duif met die nommer 712 wat ŉ Claude Bouwer Catrysse mannetjie en Tom Lock wyfie kruising was. 971 Se ma is ŉ wyfie 243 - uit die een Crusson Mannetjie by ŉ Van der Merwe Jansen wyfie vanaf Bertus Nel.

Ek wil jul die volgende storie vertel. Ek het elke jaar my duiwe gekeur voor die seisoen op hul bouvorm, keel, vlerk en watter ander foute daar ook al mag wees. Nadat ŉ vriend van my een jaar klaar sy duiwe gemerk het wat nie sy keuringsproses gemaak het nie, het hy ŉ klomp van sy “Gekose Vliegspan” verloor wat hom toe noodsaak om die wat nie die paal gehaal het nie in die span te sit. Aan die einde van die seisoen was al sy beste duiwe van die wat “Uitgegooi” was as te swak. Hy was daardie jare ŉ groot Kampioen in Pretoria. Nou gebruik ek slegs die mandjie. Gesonde duiwe, wat fiks gemaak is en goeie kos kry, klop jy nie maklik nie.

My beste Jaaroud duif (sien foto), ZA 11 GRT 1077 is geteel uit ŉ Putterie Janssen mannetjie en die Vandenabeele wyfie van Bertus Nel. Ek hou rekord van my stoetduiwe se prestasie. My beste duif in my teelhok is die Tom Lock wyfie, 5853-04. Haar kinders en kleinkinders het die laaste twee jaar (2011 en 2012) 42 keer plekke onder die top 10 in die klub behaal.

Is daar ŉ kortpad na sukses in die sport of nie?

Ander duiwe wie se kinders goed gevlieg het was as volg : 444 (De Norre/Putterie wyfie) haar kinders behaal 22 keer plek in die klub onder die TOP 10, 243 (Crusson/Jansen wyfie) behaal 24 keer plek onder top 10. Die mannetjies wat die beste vaar is 601 (Crusson) sy kinders behaal 18 keer top 10, 948 (Janssen/Putterie) 20 keer, 5552 (Crusson) 16 keer en 2388 (Sun City) ook 16 keer onder top 10 in klub.

Nee daar is nie, harde werk, goeie duiwe, goeie kos, fikse duiwe en gesonde oordeel is die enigste manier wat jou bo sal bring. Selfs die beste duiweboere het swak jare. n

Hoeveel oefenvlugte gee oom voor die eerste wedvlug?

Baie, ek begin met 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 80, 120, 150 en 200 km voor die eerste wedvlug, maar in totaal is dit tussen 20 en 30 oefenvlugte. Meer kortes as langes.

Hoeveel keer per week en wanneer in die seisoen? As die wedvlugte begin kry my duiwe 2 oefenvlugte ŉ week van tussen 20 en 25 km, of 1 van 40 km, maar my duiwe het amper twee derdes van die dag oop hok en vlieg soos hulle wil om die hok.

First of all I just want to thank Martha van Geel (FCI) for the opportunity to be part of the Carnival City One Loft Race. It was a great honour and pleasure. I hope the following report will be sufficient and meet your standards. On my arrival on Friday the 11th of January 2013 at Carnival City One Loft Race, for the basketing, my first impression was that there is constantly controlled management because of the neatness and tidiness of the lofts. The pigeons were basket in a very controlled and secure environment and all the data was displayed on a screen during the whole process. There were between seventeen (17) and eighteen (18) pigeons put into a basket (the baskets can take up to thirty five (35) pigeons). As soon as the baskets were filled they were loaded onto the Transport Vehicle. The baskets was then, under my supervision, sealed and noted by Mr. Herman van Rensburg. Three hundred and twelve (312) pigeons were basketed for the race and one pigeon was left at home because of his general fitness. The basketing list was immediately emailed to Martha van Geel, Vincente Prats and Attila Petho. Mr. Herman van Rensburg locked up both sides of the Transport vehicle with padlocks to ensure that no one can open or tamper with the pigeons. The transport vehicle departed at approximately 13h00. On their way to race point (Glen 357 km) they stopped once to give the pigeons some water. On arrival at overnight destination (Plover Cottage) the pigeons were given food and water. Saturday 12th January 2013 at approximately 04h50 the pigeons were given water again. The Pigeons were liberated at 05h35. All the pigeons were airborne without any complications. All necessary documents were completed and signed at liberation point.

At 11h01 the first eleven (11) pigeons arrived and were kept separately to confirm the data on the clocking system. All the data of the eleven (11) pigeons correlated. At 11h03 the second group of twelve (12) pigeons arrived and were also kept separately for controlled purposes. The results were emailed to Martha van Geel, Vincente Prats and Attila Petho.

Posduif-boodskap uit Tweede Wêreldoorlog pas ontsyfer Leopold Scholtz Bron - Daily Telegraph

EN HAAG – ’n Geheimsinnige boodskap wat op 6 Junie 1944 per posduif uit Normandië na Brittanje gestuur is, is eindelik ontsyfer.

vergeefs oor die boodskap gebreek, maar niemand kon dit ontsyfer nie. Die Telegraph het toe die volledige boodskap, ŉ reeks van 27 groepe van vyf letters, gepubliseer, saam met ŉ oproep dat iemand dit asseblief moet ontsyfer. Die koerant het honderde reaksies ontvang, maar uiteindelik het ŉ groep Kanadese navorsers van die navorsingsinstituut Lakefield Heritage Research in Ontario die knoop deurgehak.

Die boodskap is op die dag van die groot Geallieerde inval in Normandië deur ŉ Britse valskermsoldaat gestuur wat die Duitse posisies agter die vyandelike linies verken het. Die posduif waarmee hy die gekodeerde boodskap gestuur het, het in die skoorsteen van ŉ huis op die dorp Bletchingley in Surrey beland.

Luidens ŉ berig in die koerant gisteroggend was die boodskap afkomstig van sers. William Stott (27). In die boodskap berig hy oor die posisie van die Duitse tenks, artillerie en taktiese hoofkwartier aan die Britse bomwerpers wat lugsteun aan die invalstroepe moes verleen.

Daar het die egpaar David en Anne Martin 30 jaar gelede die oorblyfsels van die posduif ontdek. Hulle was op die punt om dit weg te gooi, toe hulle ŉ rooi kokertjie aan een van die duif se pote ontdek het. Binne-in die kokertjie was ŉ stuk papier met ŉ gekodeerde boodskap.

Die boodskap het nooit by sy bestemming uitgekom nie. Moontlik het die posduif in die slegte weer gedisoriënteerd geraak, eenvoudig te moeg geword om verder te vlieg.

at die prestasie merkwaardig maak is dat die vorige kampioene almal saam baklei het om bo te eindig. Johan Mostert wen egter die laaste wedvlug en volg dit op met ŉ tweede plek om te verseker sy voorsprong wat hy voor die wedvlug gehad het kan nie ingehaal word nie.

Die vliegspan kry Woensdag B12 in die water en Donderdag oggend kry hul mielies wat oornag in warm glukose water geweek was.

Die duiwe gogga het hom in 2010 beetgekry en met plaaslike lede se skenkings is daar gou ŉ paar duiwe in die hok, hy gaan haal egter ŉ paar duiwe in Riebeeck Wes by Johan Foot, wat die kern van sy hok sou word.

Duiwe wat siek vertoon word onmiddelik verwyder en apart behandel, afhangende van die kwaal.

Medikasie bestaan uit die ent van die duiwe teen Paramyxo en ontwurming voor die seisoen begin en weer een keer in die middel van die seisoen.

Hy glo sy sukses op die langpad lê daarin dat die duiwe nie oormatig gevlieg word nie en genoeg rus tussen vlugte moet kry.

Die eerste jaar is daar gemengde welslae maar 2011 begin hy die pap dik aanmaak deur 3 Federasie vlugte te wen; onder andere die Bloemhof vlug met enigste duif terug op die dag. Die jongduif met die meeste punte, 273 ‘n geruite wyfie, saam met haar twee sussies sou nog wys dat hy op die regte spoor met sy boerdery was.

Hoogtepunte: Om ‘n duif tydens die week voor ‘n vlug op grond van sy houding en gedrag in en om die hok te identifiseer en dan die Saterdag presteer. Wat grief jou in die sport? Jaloesie en verdagmaking van lede as hul presteer; in plaas van gaan uitvind wat die persone reg doen.

Die jaar 2012 was ‘n besonderse jaar; van die begin af maak hy sy stem dik deur kort-kort wedvlugte te wen. Ek persoonlik dink die groot kanonne het hom onderskat en nie verwag wat gaan kom nie. Maar op die langpad sou die kaf van die koring geskei word. Hy wen op die einde 6 Federasie vlugte onder andere die Derby wedvlug, met nog 4x 2de, 8x 3de, 2x 4de en 5x 6de plekke om maar ‘n paar te noem.

Sy raad aan beginners. Is om broeipare wie se kinders presteer of hul kuikens te bekom. Hou min duiwe maar kwaliteit aan en ken jou duiwe. Moet nie net aandag aan hulle gee gedurende die vliegseisoen nie. Geen simpatie word aan duiwe wat nie presteer betoon nie. Die plat op die aarde man; met sy stil geaardheid, gaan nog diep spore trap in die duiwesport, want om Federasie Kampioen te word het hy vermag wat baie lede na jare se probeer nog nie kon regkry nie.

Die Algehele beste duif 273-10 in die federasie wen 3 wedvlugte, ‘n 5de en 7de om Johan te help om as die langpadkampioen gekroon te word.

Baie geluk Johan, jy is ‘n waardige Kampioen!

Ek het hom uitgevra oor sy oefen metodes, Die duiwe doen padwerk tot op 200km voor die wedvlugte begin en word dan in drie spanne opgedeel van 20 elk, omdat hy met min duiwe vlieg. Die duiwe wat Saterdag moet vlieg word al die vorige Sondag uitgesoek en word apart gehou en behandel. Op die end word net 10 tot 15 uitgekies om aan die wedvlug deel te neem.

Maandag word 70km padwerk gedoen, Dinsdag 40km en Woensdag en Donderdag 25km net voor sononder, met die res van die duiwe wat om die beurt om die hok oefen, wyfies soggens en mannetjies saans. Die geslagte word apart gehou en oefenbeurte word omgeruil. Hy lê absoluut klem op die duiwe se gedrag en houding in en om die hok, die week voor die vlug, dit bepaal wie gestuur word. Voeding bestaan uit gewone vliegmengsel en as hulle van wedvlug terugkeer wag ‘n fynkos mengsel met o.a. gars as bestandeel en vitamiene B12 in die water tot Maandag toe. Dinsdag geen kos. Vanaf Woensdag word weer gewone vliegmengsel gegee wat stelselmatig vermeerder word tot Saterdag wanneer die normale rantsoen weer bereik word.

ARE YOU MAKING A DIFFERENCE? By Brent Hill (BA HDLIS ACE PGCE), Publicity Officer for the South Peninsula Homing Union

still remember the phone call. It was 1977 and I was racing my first season with my father in the South Peninsula Homing Union. With a membership of over 120 fanciers, with the quality of the fanciers competing including Louis and Marie Gadd, Eddie and Stuart Hayman, Toerien Bros, Jannie Mohr, Ellman Bros, Stan Hinrichsen, Pokkie Hayman, R&S.Scholefield, James Willoughby amongst others, the likelihood of featuring in the top ten positions in the federation as a thirteen year old was rather unlikely. On the phone, it was the chairman of the South Peninsula Homing Union, Louis Gadd, who said that he was coming to a meeting at the Scholefield’s residence around the corner from my house and that I was to meet him there. I waited under a streetlight in the dark and when Louis Gadd arrived, he handed me a box with a pair of pigeons, saying that he was giving me a pair of pigeons so that I could breed myself some decent birds. I still remember the blue bar cock and the check white flight hen. Louis and Marie Gadd continued to make a difference in my pigeon-racing career. They kept an eye on me at the South Peninsula Homing Union, invited me to their lofts and gave me advice as to how to manage my birds. I persisted through many bleak seasons and slowly the results improved and it was a great sense of achievement, to finally win my first federation.

as the old masters held onto their hallowed secrets. It is important to realise that in a sport where the numbers are dwindling at an ever-increasing rate and in the face of mounting pressure from anti-cruelty leagues, we need to do all we can to popularise the allure of the pigeon sport to ensure its continued existence. Being an educator by profession myself, I am very aware that the attractions posed to today’s youth, are very different to the options that we had as youngsters.

Restarting in the sport in 2010, after having lived abroad, it has been a sense of déjà vu, with my two sons, Luc and Michael showing a very keen interest in the pigeons. Luc, fourteen and Michael, eleven, are both members of the South Peninsula Homing Union, racing in the South West Pigeon Combine in Cape Town. Both boys are actively involved on basketing nights, assisting with the electronic clocks. A special mention must be made of the management of the South Western Pigeon Combine, chairman Saville Penkin, race secretary Karl Schwormstedt, and race secretary Des Smit and the members of the Wetton Homing Union, who have all welcomed, encouraged, and included the boys in the proceedings at the basketing and ring out evenings.

We need to cherish any new member who wishes to participate in the pigeon sport, teach and develop them so that they can continue with the sport, which continues to fascinate us. In the promotion of pigeon racing and in the attempt to encourage the youth to take up our sport of pigeon racing and to feel welcome in the sport, maybe each one of us needs to ask the question, “Am I making a difference?”

There is a universal trend of dwindling numbers of pigeon fanciers around the world. Belgium, the home of pigeon racing, has had a drop in the numbers of fanciers from 240 000 after the World War to 30 000 in 2012. Germany, also had a drop to 25 000 this year. (Brieftaubensport International July 2012: 21). Any new fancier, adult or child needs to be encouraged and made to feel welcome in our pigeon organisations, an environment that can be very foreboding, especially for a child.

I know that Louis and Marie Gadd certainly made a difference in my fascination with pigeon racing. n

What’s behind World Class Foundation Breeders in Pigeon Racing? (Revise the Strength of your Stock Loft) By Thomas Smit Stingy mother nature As with all other avian species not all world class racing pigeons are hereditary transmitters of quality off-spring. In fact many top class racing pigeons often fail to pass on its fame into its young. However there are World Class producer racing pigeons of which the quality does not seem to easily fade in future generation offspring. Sometimes the quality of top racers are amiss in its first generation off-spring, but surprisingly pops up again in the 3rd generation through its children – despite the latter not being great racers themselves. More often than not the less performing brother or sister of our champion racers becomes the better breeders in the stock loft. Some strains or pigeon families cross better with others, but quality racers are not necessarily forthcoming just because your crosses knitted well. In fact most of the time we do not always know with certainty which pigeon in the family tree is responsible for passing on the favourable gene from one generation to the next. Similarly, we do not automatically know which pigeon in a new mating is responsible for not passing on its favourable genes. Favourable genes are not passed down in a straight line from generation to generation. It rather appears to be highjacked by the bad (inferior) quality genes. The direct off-spring of an Ace performing pair bought for R550, 000-00 at the Sun City Million Dollar Pigeon Race by a Capetonian fancier, failed to produce similar top scores in racing competition. Once there are prove of above average results in the overall performance in your flock the discipline if breeding is to protect what you have. Therefore no risks should be taken to introduce alien genes that may dilute the gene pool and water down the quality. Test new introductions separately, once it’s proved to at least match the performance of your winning family, it may be used in the furthering of your gene pool and blended with it.

Disciplines in Breeding Mating super racers to super breeders often proves to be a success formula to retain the desirable gene pool. But there are no guarantees. We can steer the gene pool into any desired direction but cannot fully manipulate it. It helps to have as many top breeders of performers in the pedigree as is possible. It is an expensive breeding program as the acquisitions of a large number of high class pigeons do not come cheap. When one does already own high class racing pigeons, the next challenge is preserve the quality. It’s a bonus if we could manage to advance on it. It’s often documented how a fancier had ‘accidentally’ bred a superstar from two pigeons that have otherwise themselves delivered poor results as racers – yet they manage to produce quality off-spring. If pills and potions are always needed to keep the pigeons healthy, it does not own a naturally high immune system and its health status disqualified them as a choice of foundation pigeons. Pigeons may be prone to disease and will need treatment from time to time and routine preventative treatment is a natural practise in pigeon racing. However, racing pigeons that are in good care and still fall ill after a little calculated exposure owns a weak immune system and earn no place in our breeding program. A Superior direction finding ability is what makes a racing pigeon, without it your pigeons cannot find the way home. Racing Pigeons that do not know the way home in racing competition, may rather be kept as pets in a canary cage for all it matters. It’s a known fact that the larger the flock in a race event the easier it is for the pigeons to navigate, as long as the flock manage to stay together during flight. Its easy for a fast pigeon with poor navigation to stay with the pack as a follower from liberation point, but increase it’s pace nearer to home when landmarks, buildings, towers etc becomes known. Such pigeons can manage good positions in competition, but in reality they are followers and useless at stock. Once the middle distances are reached its surprising to note how many pigeons find it difficult to stay on the line of flight. The reason is simple, as the distances progress the packs begin to out fly each other and break into smaller packs. The leading pigeons become less and less and the followers lose pace and come home late or not at all. Racing Pigeons that stay on course during race events that requires longer hours of flight further from home, often in overcast conditions are the better direction finders. It’s a wise practise to ensure that there are a high number of multiple performers amongst our breeding stock that have proved to own above average direction finding ability. That’s

the reason why fanciers all over the World pursue the gene pool of a winning family. The fighting spirit. First we need a healthy pigeon that knows its way home, after that follows the talent of speed and stamina. Multiple winners need both – a fair combination of speed and stamina. Unfortunately nature seems either to provide a lot of speed or a lot of stamina, finding both at high measure in the same pigeons is a challenge in our selection – as this combination is rare. The stamina endowed racing machines can fly forever, but at a slower pace and the sprint type out fly those providing the race conditions are easy. The faster pigeons that manage to stay in front as the distance increase and the course becomes difficult, are those blessed with speed and stamina. It should however, not be concluded that out and out sprinters should be equally successful at long distance racing as there are horses for courses, but the middle and long distance specimens that owns extra stamina and speed are the latest trend in world class breeding. The will to win is a psychological trait that separates the winners from the losers in pigeons racing. Multiple winners are endowed with the will to win, compared to those that simply come home in reasonable time, whilst they can do better, but don’t - because it does not own the will to win. The will to win is seen in that extra effort our front ‘running’ pigeons own by not missing a good position. A high hit rate of success – secures the future to a large degree. When there is depth of quality in the gene pool, blood will crawl where it cannot walk. A pedigree has an odour potential when it’s littered with multiple performing breeders and performers in racing competition. A High hit rate in the strongest competition stands as a role model in our selections in the racing pigeon fraternity. A Final Word of Advice Ensure that the pedigree of the pigeons you use have a long history of (today), super breeders and racers in strong competition and on similar distances and weather conditions in which you want to perform. Mate a super racer to a super breeder to pick up on the proven hereditary transmission coming from the super breeder – it may not always work, but it’s a shortcut when it does! There are lot of potential in mating sons and daughters of super breeders to sons and daughters of another super breeder. Champion fanciers of all Europe hunt down the direct progeny of each other’s super breeders and Ace racers and capitalize on the strength of the gene pool. n

Waarom nie die wedvlug gedurende Meimaand laat plaasvind nie? Almal kla oor die Suid- Afrikaanse duiwe wat nie die mas opkom nie. Gee die duiwe genoeg geleentheid om deur te verveer en ŉ paar maande sterker te ontwikkel en dan praat ons weer.

ien jaar gelede het ek die duiwesport vaarwel toegeroep toe ek die laaste klompie jare van my bediening al my aandag aan my roeping wou gee. Soos dit met baie ander duiweboere gaan het die gemis aan my geveerde kinders op die erf my begin vang en gevolglik het ek twee jaar gelede van my ou duiwe, wat by vriend op sy plaas gehou is, gaan haal.

Waarom gaan soveel duiwe verlore by die hokke? Nog voordat ŉ enkele oefenvlug gevlieg is, is daar reeds ŉ baie groot persentasie van die duifies verlore. Vir my is dit absoluut ongehoord om meer as 5% duiwe te verloor met die inbreek slag.

Met die hulp van Stefan Strydom en Dicky Viviers van Uitenhage het ek gou tien paar jong teelduiwe daargestel wat alreeds hier en daar vir manne goeie prestasies gelewer het. Ek hou myself besig om vir jong duiweboere en beginners teen ŉ baie goedkoop prys duifies te teel wat vir hulle van waarde kans wees. As ek duifies kan skenk vir veilings, doen ek dit graag. Volgende jaar wil ek die internasionale SuidAfrikaanse “Million Dollar Pigeon Race” probeer ondersteun.

Daar is iewers ŉ groot fout as sommige duiweboere meer as 50% van hulle duiwe verloor voor die eerste oefenvlug. Daar is baie geld en moeite betrokke by elke inskrywing en elke duiweboer wil tog graag die eindstryd bywoon, maar helaas – sonder ŉ duif, sonder hoop.

Twee weke gelede het ek ŉ paar S.A. & Wêreld Duiwe Nuusblaaie bekom. Dit was ŉ heerlike ervaring om al die nuus en nuutste inligting te bekom.

My laaste vraag gaan oor ŉ teer saak naamlik wat het geword van eerlikheid en integriteit in die sport? As ŉ vooraanstaande individu op onregmatige wyse probeer om te wen, dan doen dit die sport ŉ oneer aan. Duiwe is tog die simbool van eerlikheid, opregtheid, betroubaarheid, hardwerkendheid en liefde.

Na aanleiding van sekere berigte en gebeurtenisse is daar in my gemoed ŉ paar vrae wat ek graag wil deel. Wat die “Million Dollar” wedvlug betref die volgende vrae: Waarom so baie duiwe in die hokke? Kan die organiseerders nie ŉ stelsel uitwerk wat nie meer as 4000 duiwe tot die hokke toelaat nie. Dit is tog onmoontlik om 6000+ duiwe effektief te beheer en af te rig.

Ons mag nooit die sport laat daal tot so ‘n lae vlak nie. Kom ons neem deel met trots en respek vir mekaar en ons geveerde kinders. n

TRIBUTE/HULDEBLYK BILL STEENSMA Deur Bennie Wiggins (Sekretaris WKDU) William (Bill) Steensma is gebore op 16 Desember 1930 en oorlede op 3 Januarie 2013 na ’n kort siekbed. Hy het as jong seun saam met sy pa aan wedvlugte by die Maitland & District Homing Society wat geaffilieer was met Western Province Homing Union, begin deelneem. Oom Bill was van die weinige lede wat al drie meriete balkies by Sanpo verwerf het, naamlik vir administrasie, skoubeoordelaar en wedvlugprestasies waarop hy baie trots was. Oom Bill was ’n stigterslid van die Weskaap Duiweunie (WKDU) gedurende 1981, wat vanjaar twee en dertig jaar oud is. Hiervan was hy sewe en twintig jaar aaneenlopend voorsitter tot 2010. Hy het ook op Sanpo, Unie-, klub- en vervoervlak in verskeie besture gedien. As a founder member of the WKDU we feel that all upcountry and overseas fanciers should know more about Bill. If ever there was a fancier that absolutely did everything for the sport with no gain for himself, that was Bill Steensma. Nothing was ever too much of a problem when it came to the pigeon sport, all his time was given freely, his record keeping, and controls of all matters relating to the pigeon sport, were out of this world. His records should find a home at the SANPO museum in Noupoort, which will help fanciers to remember him. Annual WKDU meetings were held at different venues each year and all those who attended can confirm that these were the greatest weekends ever. Friendships and contacts were made that are lasting till today. He will dearly be missed by all those who served with him but hope that he rests in peace. He was a wonderful husband and father and the pigeon fraternity wish his wife Elma and his children their sincere condolences on the sad loss of a very special gentleman and pigeon fancier. n

Ons huis lyk party aande soos ’n disco so kort opmekaar gaan die krag af en aan. Pa het toe gesê genoeg is genoeg. Net voor Krismis besluit hy, hy wil oplaas ’n jenneryter koop, oorlat hy moeg was vir allie alewige kragonderbrekings.

Met ’n vreemde smile op sy gesig van die ge-shock lyk dit nogal of hy dit geniet. Pa spog mos hoeka hy kon jongtyd deurnag disko sonner ophou. Hy ruk daai swietsbord of hy aan’t wen is op ’n dobbelmasjien!

My Oupa het al gedink die krag word afgesny omdat Pa elke maand die Munispaliteit se geld innie borrelstoor belê. Maar Pa sê hy’s gatvol, dit maak nie saak nie, of dit nou daai simpel mannetjie vannie Cownsil is wat onse krag afsny, of daai onnooslike amptenaar van Eskom, hy worrie nie, hy wil ’n jenneryter hê. Hy en Ma is altwee moeg van allie episodes van Sewende Laan wat hulle nie te siene kry nie.

Nou ja - die swietsbordtjie moef nie, en Pa hou nie op ruk nie, en hy maak sukke jodel-geluide wat amper klink soos Charles Jacobie op my ma se favourite langspeelplaat. Ek dog dis van woede wat Pa so skreeu oorlat hy nou begin kwaad word virrie swietsbordtjie. Hy dans so oppie leer dat die een ná die ander boutjie uit die leer pop vannie geskud... en hy gooi sy dikkerige lyf rond bo-op daai leer asof hy nou inne jaaif-kompetisie deelneem, of ’n voordanser by die 2020 krieket is!

Nou ja, toe gat ek en Pa kooperasie toe om die ding te koop. Oppie kaart, want Pa sê my ma se kaart is baie lekker - jy koop net op Budget se rekening. Jy vertel die mense om dit op Budget se rekening te sit, dan doen hulle dit sommer. Ek weet nie lekker wie Budget issie, maar ek weet net Pa sit alles op Budget se rekening. Ek reken dié Budget gat darem lekker moerig wees as hy uitvind wat Pa alles op sy rekening koop.

Net toe ek vir Pa wil waarsku lat hy vannie leer gaan afval, toe gebeur dit al klaar - hy val van daai leer af, maar hy val nie grond toe soos ’n mens moet nie. Toe verstaan ek hoekom party mense sê “hy’t daar afgemoer” want daai wassie ’n val nie, daai was ’n moerse gatslag!

So, voor my pa die ding aan die krag loop koennek, toe swiets hy eers die jennerytertjie af en hy se vir my, “Kleinboet, as ’n ou met kragwerk, dan moet jy slim wees, en nugter wees.” Toe tref dit my - Pa is nie gewoonlik een vannie twee nie - só toe weet ek: hie kom gróót stront!

Ek kon wragtag nie anders as om vir Pa hande te klap nie. Die jennerytertjie staan deesdae vergete innie geraatsj onder ’n laag stof - niemand praat oorie voorval nie. En Pa soek nou net woes vir ’n windlaaier innie Landbouweekblad se snuffelgids...
