INFORMATION FROM DEPARTMENTS NEWS FROM THE MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT MATHS WEEK report Last week we celebrated Mathematics Week, a week earlier than last year, and the whole school, staff included, were immersed in all sorts of activities based around the theme “Careers in Mathematics”. Students, teachers and support staff were divided into either Land, Forestry, Tourism and Geothermal teams and competed to win the overall main prize. The Redwood Team from Forestry were the overall winners – congratulations to everyone in that team! Juniors had a rest from their normal programme and joined in a hilarious Mathletics Competition, a practice Mathsmind Competition, a Treasure Hunt and games like Pass It On, while staff and senior students had questions to answer each day. Competition was so fierce teachers on leave emailed in their answers to help their team.
Year 9 student Holly Forbes said it was great fun joining in all the exciting activities. “My team came second by one point so we are determined to do better next year.” By the end of the week both students and staff knew a lot more about how mathematics is involved in every career and had a lot of fun.

From the Maori Department Keana Simeon’s report about her Pukaki Award trip to Wellington: On Friday the 8th August 2014, I was privileged enough to be chosen as a representative for the Pukaki Award. We travelled down to Wellington by plane and I was accompanied by Whaea Aramoana Mohi, Whaea Sonia Cooper and one student from each school that descended from Ngāti Whakaue. I was selected because of my leadership skills and being highly recognised around the school. Six students including myself flew down to Te Upoko o te Ika and arrived at 7:15am. We were escorted to the Reserve Bank of New Zealand and were welcomed in by a pohiri. After a delicious breakfast, we made our way to the Governor General's
house. I learnt a lot of information about the former Governor Generals and also the 2014 man himself ‘Sir Jerry Mataparae’. From there, we were taken on a 2 hour tour and shown significant parts of the home such as where people are ‘knighted’ and also the room of Prince William and Duchess Kate. Afterwards, it was time for lunch back at the Reserve Bank where we discussed our career and future plans. We were fortunate enough to hold 1 million dollars as well! A while later, we explored The Beehive and Parliament. We were told captivating facts and stories about the buildings and what goes on within those walls. Our last guided tour took place at Te Papa Museum where we were privileged enough to witness the true beauty of our beautiful Māori taonga and tupuna. We were told magnificent stories about the carvings and the battles they went through to get the taonga back onto home soil. Words could not describe how I felt to be surrounded around these taonga. After an extended tour around the private rooms of Te Papa we made way for our final stop. Lastly, we travelled to the beautiful Mt Victoria lookout where we saw the dazzling city of Wellington. It was a truly stunning sight. However, I have to admit, the windy weather was too much to handle so we made our way to the airport. We then boarded our plane and arrived back into Rotorua at 7:15pm. I am genuinely honoured to have been chosen to attend this trip. This was a huge learning experience for me and it will definitely help me for my future. Nā Keana Simeon.

___________________________________________________________________________ Boys Hockey
A late game on a cold wintery night last night was not a great start for a game against JPC. The team, again, had to play a strong defensive game, with fierce attacks by the opposition. During the first half we slipped at times giving away position and not marking tightly enough. JPC took advantage each time and scored three times. Half time talk by the Coach saw a more focused Lakes team. There were no goals scored in the second half! Players of the Day: Jason Hingston and Sarah Beaufill. ___________________________________________________________________________
