John Carter’s upstate New York cottage became a favorite summer place of mine, as it reminded me of my heroic Uncle Jack. Last year I finally equipped the cottage with modern plumbing and electricity, and if not for this mundane fact the remarkable story that follows would never have come to light. Some workmen happened across a small strongbox in the basement, which had apparently belonged to Carter himself. Of course, the combination for the lock was unknown to me, and so I hired a locksmith to open the safe. Therein I discovered a pile of yellowed manuscript pages. A cursory glance let me know I had something more valuable than gold or jewels – a heretofore unknown portion of Carter’s records of Barsoom. In the years of idle pleasure that followed the salvation of Helium, Dejah Thoris regaled Carter with her many adventures before his arrival, all of which Carter wrote down and placed in the basement safe. Why or how these documents were overlooked, I do not know, but now they are entering publication at last. Martians do not age once they reach maturity, nor do they die unless slain. So it should not seem strange that this story takes place over four centuries before Carter’s time. The twin cities of Helium were two sparring city-states at that time, in a predicament of constant and bitter war with one another. But all that would change very quickly.
