Learning, fun all part of annual Senior Expo SCOTT DE LARUELLE Unified Newspaper Group
Whether it’s a chance to meet up with friends, learn about the latest information for seniors or just enjoy some good music (and bingo), there’s plenty to do at the eighth annual Senior Expo. Located once again at the Stoughton Wellness and Athletic Center (2300 Hwy. 51/138), the free expo – set for Wednesday, Oct. 5 – has become a tradition in the area. People travel from all over the region to attend and see 41 vendors and exhibitors providing a variety of services for seniors and their families. And yes, there will be bingo. The event has grown in popularity because it caters to the changing needs of seniors, said Kathy Neumeister, advertising and marketing manager of Unified Newspaper Group, one of the expo’s main sponsors. "Our Senior Expo brings people together with the products and services that are invaluable to maintaining and enhancing one’s quality of life,” she said.

“Melly C” will perform from 12:30-1:30 p.m. on Oct. 5.
Sweet sounds of ‘Melly C’ When it comes to entertaining folks and putting a smile on their faces, Stoughton’s “Melly C” is in a class all his own. Mel Cleveland – as he’s known off-stage – has been entertaining groups of all ages and joining in the fun with his audiences for years. He’s bringing his wellloved musical act back to the Senior Expo this year from 12:30-1:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 5. Melly’s musical mission has followed two other successful careers – first, a 23-year run in the U.S. Army, followed by a 27-year career working for the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. On stage, people will hear a variety of musical sounds and stylings, and Melly will use guitars, harmonicas and even a “Spamjo” – an instrument fashioned from a Spam can. He’ll lead sing-a-longs of many traditional favorites, such as “Bicycle Built for Two,” “Goodnight Irene,” “Amazing Grace” and “You Are My Sunshine.” During the performance, Melly likes to interact with the audience and will ask trivia questions, offering a chance to win Wisconsin Lottery scratch-off tickets. – Scott De Laruelle

We’re thrilled to be hosting it again this year.” The expo opens at 9 a.m., and the first 300 attendees will receive a free goody bag. Diet and exercise needs to change with age

Healthy eating paired with moderate exercise remains one of the best combinations for healthy weight loss or weight maintenance. and stimulate your metabolic rate, as you age you should perform strength-training and weight-bearing exercises as well. Muscle mass naturally diminishes with age, and, according to the Mayo Clinic, if you avoid strength exercises you can eventually lose muscle and increase the percentage of fat in your body. Strength training also helps you develop stronger bones, which can help prevent fractures. In addition, as you gain muscle, your body will
begin to burn calories more efficiently, making your time in and out of the gym more productive. Apart from diet and exercise, aging adults may need to consult with their doctors about nutritional supplements. Your body may produce less stomach acid as you get older, making it more difficult to absorb vitamins from food, including vitamins B12 and D. Aging skin is less able to transform sunlight into the vitamin, which can affect the body's ability
to absorb calcium. Deficiencies in vitamins D and B12 and calcium can result in a number of health conditions. Routine blood work can help pinpoint whether you are deficient in key nutrients. The body's nutritional and fitness needs change as a person ages. Those uncertain about the lifestyle changes they will need to make should speak with their physicians. – Metro News Service

Maintaining a healthy weight is important at any age. But avoiding being overweight or obese can be particularly crucial for seniors, considering many illnesses are tied to body weight. Maintaining a healthy immune system also can require eating a balanced, nutritionally sound diet. The Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center at Durham Medical Center in Virginia says people need to change how they eat for every decade they reach. Caloric intake should be reduced because individuals are generally moving around less, have less muscle and their metabolic rates decline. People who find that they are having trouble losing weight in their 50s and older may be basing weight-loss goals on calorie recommendations for younger people. One challenging thing about eating less overall is supplementing with more nutrient-rich foods. Older bodies still require similar amounts of protein, vitamins and minerals as younger ones, but older men and women must balance that need with their need to consume less calories. Consuming more fruits, vegetables and lean protein sources, including beans, and choosing whole grains over refined starchy foods can be the key. Watch what you drink, as well. Soft drinks and other sugary beverages may be packed with calories you don't need. Choose unsweetened beverages and opt for water as much as possible. Protect yourself against dehydration, which can be harder to

Today's young professionals hear about the importance of saving for retirement seemingly from the moment they are hired. Older workers may not have been so lucky, and many may find themselves trying to play catch up as retirement age draws closer. While it's important to begin saving for retirement as early as possible, late bloomers whose retirement dates are nearing can still take steps to secure their financial futures and make their golden years that much more enjoyable.

Tips to help prevent medication mismanagement Medication management is an important issue for seniors and their families. Taking multiple medications for different conditions can be a potential health hazard for the thousands of seniors who must manage health conditions with prescription drugs. Harmful drug interactions are a result of the confusion that can arise when seniors take multiple medications at the same time. Older adults also metabolize medications differently than young people. As a result, they may be more susceptible to overdose or other ill effects. Families looking to help seniors
effectively manage their medications should consider the following tips.
Keep a list of medications Maintain a list of all medications being taken, noting both prescription and over-the-counter medications and any supplements and herbs. Provide a copy to any new doctors and pharmacies.
Use pill sorters Medication sorters with daily slots for nighttime and daytime pills can keep medications organized and eliminate some of the personal error in medication management.

Eating right can improve quality of life Legend states that on April 2, 1513, Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León was the first European to discover modern-day Florida when he traveled on a quest for the mythical "Fountain of Youth." While modern science has proven that there is no mystical fountain or body of water that can reverse or slow down the aging process, there are many steps people can take to age well and prolong their lives. Eating the right foods is one way to age well. These
types of foods can go a long way toward increasing both life expectancy and quality of life. Those who want to employ diet to increase their life expectancy may want to start adding more of the following foods to their breakfast, lunch and dinner plates.

Occupational therapy can help chronic pain sufferers Millions of people suffer from acute or chronic pain every year, and the effects of that pain extend far and wide. While pain sufferers understandably focus their attention on treating their conditions, it's important for all people to recognize the nonphysical burdens pain places on people as well. Estimates vary regarding the overall financial burden of chronic pain on healthcare systems, but numerous studies have suggested the overall costs are in the neighborhood of half a billion dollars every year. not you, then downsizing might be right for you. Tell your children you are thinking of downsizing and invite them over to pick through any items still in your home. Once they have done so and taken what they want, you can host a yard sale, ultimately donating or discarding what you cannot sell. Once all of the items are gone, you may realize that moving into a smaller place is the financially prudent decision.
Examine your own items as well Your children's items are likely not the only items taking up space in your home. Take inventory of your own possessions as well, making note of items you can live without and those you want to keep. If the list of items you can live without is extensive, then you probably won't have a problem moving into a smaller home. The benefits to establishing advanced healthcare directives
has the legal authority to make healthcare decisions for you if you are no longer able to speak for yourself. This may be a spouse, child, relative, or close friend. The Mayo Clinic suggests choosing a person who can be trusted to make decisions that adhere to your wishes and values and to be your advocate if there are disagreements about your care. Healthy adults may give little thought to injuries or illnesses. When the going is good, it is easy to forget about the less pleasant side effects of aging. However, putting off these conversations and decisions can lead to unnecessary obstacles in the years to come. A d va n c e d h e a l t h c a r e directives can be invaluable resources for family members and friends who will be responsible for managing a person's plans should they become unable to make their own decisions. Various organizations, including
AARP, offer resources on advanced planning and the options available to adults looking to plan their estates. The National Healthcare Decisions Day movement, a group dedicated to providing clear, concise and consistent information on healthcare decision-making, defines advanced directives as establishing: • A "healthcare power of attorney" (or "proxy" or "agent" or "surrogate"), or the person you select to be your voice for your healthcare decisions if you cannot speak for yourself.
• A "living will" to document which medical treatments you would or would not want at the end of life. While these are decisions that people often put off, it's important to make them as early as possible. Not only will they dictate your wishes, they'll take the pressure off of loved ones who would otherwise be tasked with making difficult decisions on their own.
