Stoughton History History & Heritage of Stoughton The community of Stoughton began in 1847 when Luke Stoughton purchased 800 acres of land along a large bend of the Yahara River, then called the Catfish River. He platted the town and proceeded to build a dam, lumber mill and general store. In 1853, Luke Stoughton offered free land to the railroad if it would pass through the town, assuring the city’s future prosperity. After the Civil War, wagon manufacturing became the most important industry in town. By

World War I, over 800 men were employed at the Mandt Wagon Works Factory. Leaf tobacco also became the important local crop, and hundreds of people, many of them women, went to work in the 17 tobacco warehouses in Stoughton. The principal source of labor for Stoughton’s industries was the pool of Norwegian immigrants who arrived in the area starting in the 1870’s. By 1900, 75% of Stoughton’s population was of Norwegian descent. Stoughton maintains a strong Norwegian character today. The Stoughton Historical Society Museum at 324 S. Page Street displays examples of Norwegian crafts, such as rosemaling, hardanger (needlework) and woodcarving

Syttende Mai Folk Festival - May 13-15, 2016 The Norwegian heritage of many of Stoughton’s citizens is celebrated each year as our entire town and thousands of guests observe Syttende Mai. The words “Syttende Mai” are Norwegian for “seventeenth of May,” and we hold the event on the weekend closest to May 17. On that day in 1814, the Norwegian Constitution was signed, giving Norway independence from its 500-year union with Denmark. Stoughton’s Syttende Mai celebration dates back as far as 1868, when Norwegian immigration in this part of Wisconsin was reaching its peak. Syttende Mai is a very colorful, gala, family-oriented affair with many people wearing authentic Norse costumes or bunads. There are folk dancing performances by the world famous Stoughton Norwegian Dancers, exhibits of Norwegian rosemaling (painting) and hardanger (needlework), Norse Costume show, Norwegian church services, smorgasbord of Norwegian foods and a variety of musical performances.

Syttende Mai also features an arts and crafts fair, quilt show, Village Player performances, canoe race, 20 and 10-mile runs, 17-mile walk, a 2-mile Community Lil’ Run, a strongman competition called Viking Games, a huge Norwegian parade, and local food stands everywhere! A king and queen, and prince and princess are chosen to reign over the festivities. Come join us!

Stoughton Fair - June 29-July 4, 2016 Summer is not complete without a family trip to the fair. Coffee Break Festival - August 20, 2016 Stoughton is Home of the Coffee Break The concept of the modern day coffee break started in Stoughton, Wisconsin! In the late 1800’s, Norwegian immigrants arrived in the Stoughton area in large numbers, attracted here by the availability of work in T. G. Mandt’s wagon factory. With the men busy building wagons, local tobacco warehouse owners hired their wives for seasonal tobacco work. The women found the Gunderson Tobacco Warehouse, at the corner of Main and Coffee Streets (now Hillside St.), an ideally located place to work, as it was near enough to their homes that they could periodically run home to check on their families, houses, and the meal in progress. While home, the women took a minute to rest and help themselves to a cup of coffee from the pot always hot on the stove. With this simple habit, the

coffee break began---a brief time to relax and enjoy a cup of coffee before heading back to work. Today, Stoughton celebrates our claim as the birthplace of the coffee break with a day-long festival. Events include a coffee “brew off” between roasters, a collectible car show, a beanspitting contest, an arts and crafts fair, and a “Java Jog” fun run for kids and adults. A variety of entertainment, food stands, bouncy houses, and of course, plenty of coffee, are all part of the festival. What better way to commemorate the home of the coffee break than to come down and relax in beautiful Mandt Park with a cup of coffee.

“Destination Stoughton” Norwegian Weekends Throughout the Year The Sons of Norway Mandt Lodge has formed a group called the Stoughton Norwegian Summit Group, bringing together almost twenty groups, businesses and organizations that have an interest in Norwegian Heritage and culture in the greater Stoughton Area. Working with the Stoughton Chamber of Commerce, the purpose of the group is to promote each other’s events, activities and membership while supporting tourism in Stoughton.

The Norwegian Summit Group has decided to offer three “Destination Weekends” focusing around key Norwegian events in Stoughton. Instead of having a single event, the group creates supporting activities to make the event part of a weekend. People can look forward to performances at the Stoughton Opera House, local music groups, and the world famous Stoughton Norwegian Dancers during these events, as well as other unique and interesting demonstrations and displays. In the fall, the Wisconsin State Rosemalers Association’s fall sale is the main attraction. This year the dates are October 29-30, 2016, and the sale always occurs on the last weekend in October. In the spring, the Stoughton Norwegian Dancers’ Norse Afternoon of Fun is the featured event. That always happens on the second weekend in February, with the next one scheduled for February 12, 2017. When the Stoughton Opera house hosts the Commonweal Theatre’s plays by Henrik Ibsen, the Summit Group will once again create supporting events. Visit www.stoughtonwi.com for dates.

Norwegian Heritage Center – Livsreise To commemorate and celebrate Stoughton’s strong Norwegian culture, the Bryant Foundation gifted the city with a Norwegian Heritage Center called Livsreise – “Life’s Journey.” The facility tells the Norwegian immigration story from 1825-1910 with interactive maps, a museum area with im-

Stoughton City Band Revived after a hiatus of 49 years, the first rehearsal of the band was August 28, 1986 with Director Diane Quick. Less than a year later, Millie Gardner became Director and continued until she handed the baton to Roger Gohlke in October 2007. Each year the band performs a Friday night concert the weekend of Syttende Mai and plays in the Sunday parade. Other performances include: Memorial Day Ceremonies, combined concerts with the Oregon Band, several summer concerts, and a combined Christmas Concert with the Stoughton Festival Choir, performed in the beautifully restored Stoughton Opera House.

Stoughton Opera House is Jewel of the Community As soon as you arrive in Stoughton, you are able to see the striking landmark that symbolizes Stoughton’s spirit and heritage – The Stoughton Opera House. For over a century, this building has stood tall as one of the largest second story theaters in the Midwest. Originally called the City Hall Auditorium, The Stoughton Opera House opened on February 22, 1901 and served Stoughton until the 1950’s when it fell into a state of disrepair. In the 1980’s, a group formed to restore the theater back to its original beauty, using no public funds. This labor of love took over 15 years. When the majority of renovations to the Opera House were completed, the Opera House was formally re-opened on its 100th birthday – February of 2001 – with a grand Reopening Celebration. It has been an icon ever since. Each show season

includes a wide variety of world renowned performers playing everything from Bluegrass to Americana, Classical to Jazz, Country to Rock, Comedy to Theater, and much more. The Stoughton Opera House has something special for every musical taste and is now regarded as a premier venue for outstanding entertainment in South Central Wisconsin. Outdoor Recreation Plentiful in Stoughton Situated along the peaceful Yahara River, Stoughton provides numerous opportunities to enjoy the beautiful scenery of southwest Wisconsin.
