Vikings expect to contend for Badger South title Coach: Dan Prahl, third year (8-11) Letterwinners (offense/ defense): 26/16 Starters lost (offense/ defense): 7/5 JEREMY JONES Sports editor
Stoughton made the playoffs for the third time in school history and the second time since 2014 last year. It was an improvement of four games after coach Dan Prahl took over in 2015, and the Vikings (6-4, 4-2) look poised to contend for a Badger South Conference title this season with 12 returning starters. Now that the team has people’s attention, Prahl said, the challenge for Stoughton will be how they handle that from within. “Our guys are embracing it right now,” he said. “Staying healthy is definitely going to be a huge part of our success this year, but with everyone we have coming back and the underclassmen meshing well with our seniors, we’re super excited.”
Much of the team’s success on offense will come down to the production of senior running back Brady Schipper (6-0, 180) who rushed for 771 yards and seven touchdowns despite being injured and playing in only six games and the offensive line. “Brady gets it down on and off the field,” Prahl said. “He leads in the classroom and on the field, and we definitely need him to stay healthy this year.” Prahl added that Schipper, who has drawn interest from several colleges, will also see time at safety. “That’s were a lot of those teams at the next level want to see him play,” Prahl said. “So he’ll see plenty of reps on both sides of the ball.” Senior Jordan DiBendetto (WR/ CB), Elijah Krumholz (tackle), Aodan Marshall (guard) and Tommy McClain (OL/DL) have also drawn collegiate interest. The Vikings should also be solid up front again with the return of Krumholz (6-4, 255), Marshal (6-3, 285) and center Matt Krcma (5-11, 195), who started at left tackle as a freshman. Junior Jack True (6-0, 270) looks to step into the left guard role this season. “We have a lot of experience coming back on the O-line,” Prahl said.

Returning letterwinners for the Stoughton football team (front, from left) are: Payton Montgomery, Gavin Miller, Tommy McClain, Joey LePine, Stuart Wollangk and Aodan Marshall; (second row) Sam McHone, Max Fernholz, Brady Schipper, Jordan DiBenedetto, Dylan Bennett, Matt Krcma and Matt Kellom; (third row) Chase Kotlowski, Parker Smith, Tyler Anderson, Jonathan Malueg, Marcus Martingilio and Elijah Krumholz; (back) Nick Waldorf, Laz Madina, Weston Beyler and Jack Nelson. “Jack is probably the strongest kid on our team, so there’s definitely a lot of expectations for our big dogs up front and the experience up front.” Max Fernholz (6-0, 195) was an honorable mention tight end, and Sam McHone was an honorable mention kicker last season. They are
joined by the return of DiBenedetto (6-0, 180) at wide receiver and quarterback Jonathan Malueg under center. “With a couple of years in the system, everyone is excited to build off what we’ve done in the past,” Prahl said.
The Vikings coach said he feels great about where the team is defensively, calling it “the strength of this year’s team.” “Our defense is going to be lights out,” he said. “They’re always asking

Defense looks to lead resurgence in Oregon Coach: Dan Kissling, eighth season (20-47) Starters returning (offense/defense): 7/6 Starters lost (offense/defense): 7/7

Depth will once again be an issue for Oregon in 2017, although the Panthers (1-8, 0-6) have plenty of experience returning at the skill positions. “We were in every one of our games last year except for one, and our kids knew that and they are pretty excited for the season,” coach Dan Kissling said. Senior running back Brett Wannebo (5-10, 205) figures to be a focal point of much of the offense after rushing for 641 yards and earning second-team honors last season. Senior running back Kardelle Phillips (5-11, 175) also returns. “ We a l s o h ave s o m e younger skill guys that will be really good, that need to grow up and play like veterans very quickly,” Kissling said. Who starts under center remains the big question for Oregon with Cedric Girard (6-1, 165) and Nolan Look (6-0, 155) battling for reps in the team’s Wing T offense. The Panthers are tasked w i t h r e p l a c i n g s eve r a l starters on the offensive
line after graduating second-team tackle Colton Rader, honorable mention Garrett Johnson, Davis Christensen and Hunter Schultz. Senior guard Henry Milz was an honorable mention guard. Noah Karpelenia (6-1, 215) started on the O-line. “ We w i l l b e p l a y i n g some younger guys to help early on, and they need to play like veterans in a hurry,” Kissling said. Second-team senior Sam Reynolds (6-2, 205) led the Panthers’ 3-5 base defense with 101 tackles (six for loss) and returns to lead a solid group of veteran linebackers that should be the strength of the defense. Junior John Klus (6-0, 215) started as a freshman but missed most of last season due to injury. Potentially one of the top linebackers in the conference, Klus had 47 tackles (three for loss) in four g a m e s . Wa n n e b o , w h o played both ways, had 81 tackles as a linebacker. All five defensive lineman are returning starters, but Kissling said the group will need to play better in 2017. Lineman Nate Newton (5-10, 250), junior Connor Drake (6-2, 220)

Returning letterwinners for the Oregon football team are: Cedric Girard (laying down); (front, from left) Ryan Michek, Jack Sommers, Brett Wannabo, John Klus, Kardelle Phillips, Jahlil Turner and Nate Newton; (back) Logan Ackerman, Hayden Bell, Harry Kessenich, Noah Anders, Connor Drake, Dillon Hein, Noah Karpelenia, Sam Reynolds and Henry Milz.
and defensive ends Henry Milz (6-0, 210), Dillon Hein (6-3, 205) and Logan Ackerman (6-1, 230) also return. Hein was sixth on the team with 58 tackles. Oregon will have some big shoes to fill in the back end, graduating firstteam cornerback Cullen Gahagan (seven interceptions) and honorable mention defensive back Jacob Rosenmeier. But Oregon returns Jack Sommers (5-11, 175) at safety.

Badger South Conference
Badger South race wide open JEREMY JONES Sports editor
Monona Grove got knocked off by Monroe in Week 4 last week and failed to win at least a share of the Badger South for the first time since 2008. The Silver Eagles regrouped quickly, however, and found themselves hoisting a silver ball at the WIAA Division 2 state title game in Camp Randall last November. While Monona Grove figures to be back at the top again this season, the team could face a host of challengers, including a newcomer and a cellar-dweller turned up-and-comer. “MG has a phenomenal staff,” Prahl said. “I respect coach (Brandon) Beckwith and what he does there. It’s powered by tradition. We want to match up against teams like that who are getting to state — that’s where we want to end up.” Watertown, a Division 2 playoff team last year, joins the conference following the disbanding of the Wisconsin Little 10 and should mix things up atop the standings with one of the state’s top aerial attacks. “Our DBs are going to love that challenge,” Stoughton head coach Dan Prahl said. “You’ve got to respect what they do with that quarterback and wide receiver. Our guys aren’t about to back down to anybody.” The Goslings are led by former University
of Minnesota quarterback Benji Kamrath, who enters his ninth year as Watertown’s coach with a 40-40 career record. Watertown has made the playoffs the past six years. The conference expansion increased both the Badger South and North (with the addition of Beaver Dam) to eight teams and eliminated the need for a crossover nonconference game each week. As a result, each team will now only play two non-conference crossover games — instead of three — which increases the importance of conference wins even more this season. “With Watertown joining the conference now, you have to have four conference wins to make the playoffs,” Prahl said. “You’re either 3-4 or 4-3, it’s a matter of whether everyone buys in or not.” Stoughton finished 5-2 behind Monroe (7-0) and Monona Grove (6-1) in conference last season, but with the return of 12 starers, the Vikings look capable of hanging another conference championship banner in the gym. “We’ve got to embrace the expectations,” Prahl said. “We can’t take any weeks for granted.” Milton is hoping to get itself back in the hunt after slipping to fifth place last year, while Fort Atkinson, Madison Edgewood and Oregon are looking to build upon what they did last season.

Monroe Toby Golembiewski, second season (11-1) Letterwinners (returning/ lost): not reported Starters returning (offense/defense): 5/5 Monroe (11-1, 6-0) hung on to beat Monona Grove 10-7 in Week 4 last week and went on to win the Bader South title. The Cheesemakers went on to reach the WIAA Division 3 state quarterfinals, where they lost 7-3 to Pewaukee. Despite last season’s success, the defending champions enter this season with plenty of question marks, having graduated three all-conference lineman and almost all of their skill position players. It will be a big transition for an offense that averaged 31.1 points per game and exceeded 34 points eight times. Senior running back Jake Kind got the majority of work out of the backfield once again, after having rushed for 1,089 yards and nine touchdowns before a postseason injury. Second-team wide receiver Alex Tordoff and honorable mention quarterback Tyler Elmer are also gone. Brayden Zettle (6-2, 175), a second-team defensive back last season, takes over under center. Senior guard Joe Hughes (5-11, 230) returned after earning second-team honors last year, and kicker Dempzy Foley (5-9, 175) was a second-team pick. Senior linebacker Travis Wolf (5-7, 170) was a unanimous first-team pick

The Silver Eagles are once again picked to take back the conference this season despite graduating 32 seniors and the return of just two offensive starters. Among the offensive returns are senior quarterback Alec Ogden who posted 3,074 passing yards and 35 touchdowns to only three interceptions. He also ran for six scores as he earned all-Badger Conference first-team and honorable mention All-State honors. Ogden, who hopes to play football at the collegiate level, has received offers from NCAA Division II St. Cloud (Minn.) and Minnesota-Mankato. Jackson Thomsen (5-10, 170) is the Silver Eagles’ only other returning starter on offense. He was a second-team all-conference running back last year, rushing for more than 1,300 yards and 13 touchdowns. The team will need to fill the void left by the c o n f e r e n c e ’s t o p w i d e receiver last year in Andryi

The Silver Eagles’ defense graduated defensive back Jarrett Maier and linebacker Dylan Johnson. Maier had 101 tackles in 14 games to go along with six interceptions, three forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. Johnson posted 74 tackles, forcing a fumble and recovering another. Monona Grove, which runs both a 4-3 and 4-4 defense, returns a pair up-and-coming defensive lineman in honorable mention Trevor Wunderlin (5-10, 185) and senior defensive end Marcus Wallace (5-10, 275).
Fort Atkinson Coach: Steve Mahoney, 17th year (78-80) Letterwinners (returning/lost): 25/8 Starters returning (offense/defense): 3/6 Fort Atkinson (6-5, 3-3) played its way to the second round of the WIAA Level 2 playoffs last year, losing a heartbreaker 41-40. The Blackhawks will have an uphill battle this season after graduating Offensive Player of the Year Preston Strasburg, who rushed for 2,054 yards on the ground and scored 28 touchdowns. The Blackhawks also graduated first-team wide receiver Jared Edwards, tackle Drew Hoye and second-team quarterback Matt Romens (1,690 yards, 16 touchdowns). Senior Connor O’Brien, an honorable mention wide receiver last year, takes over at quarterback. On the line, senior Cory Schroeder (5-10, 245) earned second-team all-conference honors and senior guard Ian Carnes (6-3, 285) is a three-year starter for the Blackhawks. Troy Nachtigal (6-1, 215), an Army recruit, was a unanimous first-team defensive end pick and will lead a young 3-4 defense. Nachtigal made 50 tackles last year on a defense which also featured Mitch Brown (6-1, 200), a three-year starter who had 65 tackles, including six for loss.

Watertown (6-5, 5-1) was a Division 2 playoff team last year, falling to Waukesha West in the second round. The Goslings enter their debut in the Badger South among the favorites after the Wisconsin Little Ten conference dissolved following the 2016 season. Unlike the rest of the conference, the Goslings run a no huddle, spread offense which could provide some challenges for the rest of the league. The offense is led by senior quarterback Dylan Fagerland (6-3, 180) who threw for 3,550 yards and 35 touchdowns last year and was on honorable mention All-State list. Both Fagerland and Ogden share a quarterbacks coach in Greg Holcomb of Next Level Athletix. Wa t e r t ow n w i d e r e c e iv e r R y a n Hayden (6-3, 170) caught 95 passes for 1,620 yards and 18 touchdowns in the Goslings’ no-huddle offense. The senior orally committed to play football at the U.S. Air Force Academy earlier this fall. The Goslings will have to replace almost its entire offensive line, however. Defensively, Watertown should be led by all-Wisconsin Little Ten defensive end Shephen Maule (6-3, 201). Senior linebackers Devon Peirick (5-9, 187) and Zach Huebner (6-1, 190) and senior safety Clayton Goodman also return. While the Goslings’ moved the ball well through the air, they also turned it over 20 times, The defense gave up 32.3 points and 370.5 yards per game. Monona Grove and Watertown are set to play on the final day of the regular season in a game that could determine the conference champion, if the Goslings’ defense tightens up.
Milton (3-6, 2-4) fell back to fifth place in the Badger South last year under first-year coach Matt Lee, which ended a streak of earning back-to-back shares of the conference title. The Red Hawks won’t have an easier time this season, either, graduating 23 letterwinners while returning only three offensive starters. Junior guard Eric Hessenbauer, an honorable mention last year, returns to lead that group. Among the team’s most pressing needs will be finding a replacement under center following the graduation of quarterback Isaac Phillips and his 1,752 passing yards and 136 rushing yards. Senior linebacker Jaxon Soddy (5-11, 185) was a second-team all-conference linebacker last season and leads a defense that has a lot of experience with seven returning starters. Soddy led the Blackhawks with 84 tackles last year. Returning in the middle of the defense is senior honorable mention Jerry Lipke (6-0, 180), who finished second with 71 tackles. Senior defensive back Blake Fuchs (5-9, 165) should solidify the back end after ending last season with two interceptions.

Madison Edgewood Coach: Al Minnaert, 26th year (154-107) Letterwinners (returning/lost): 25/18 Starters returning (offense/defense): 5/5 Madison Edgewood (2-7, 1-5) suffered through another tough season last year finishing near the bottom of the Badger South. Head Coach Al Minnaert said he expects the Crusaders to compete for a playoff spot, if the team can keeps its best players healthy. Edgewood returns four starters up front plus senior tight end Jack McNeil (6-5, 250), making up the strength of the team. Senior tackle Mark Luebke and senior center Will Foht were both all-Badger South honorable mention picks last year, helping the Crusaders ring up 125 yards passing per game. The entire backfield and receiving corps will be new this season, though. Kalevi Breckterfield (5-10, 200), a firstteam all-conference linebacker, returns to lead a porous defense that allowed 354 yards per game. A small roster, McNeil was also an honorable mention on the defensive line. “One of the big challenges for us this season will be defending a wide variety of offenses in a league with really talented individuals,” Minnaert said. “We will need our young, inexperienced players to step up and play well.”

Sun Prairie Coach: Brian Kaminski, 15th Letterwinners (returning/lost): 19/22 Starters returning (offense/ defense): 6/6 Sun Prairie shared the Big Eight Conference title with Verona last season, and the Cardinals are the favorites to repeat with a stout defense and 12 overall starters back in 2017. The lone loss last season was to rival Middleton, but Sun Prairie handed Verona its lone Big Eight loss. Offensively, Jack Zander is the lone
once again challenge for the Big Eight title, while Madison La Follette should be a dark horse candidate. In 2016, Verona shared the title with Sun Prairie at 8-1, and Middleton was in second at 7-2. Madison West and Madison La Follette both finished 5-4 and made the playoffs. Sun Prairie defeated Verona, but Middleton defeated

Madison La Follette Coach: Scott Swanson, fourth Letterwinners (returning/lost): 13/22 Starters returning (offense/defense): 4/4 Madison La Follete made the playoffs for the fourth straight season last year, defeating Janesville Craig, Janesville Parker, Beloit Memorial, Middleton and Madison East. The only three offensive starters back are on the offensive line, so there will be a need for others to step up. Senior Jake Gilchrist-Kleintz (WR) had 25 receptions for 296 yards and two touchdowns, and junior Kayvion James Ragland looks to be the next running back after carrying the ball 29 times for 160 yards and a touchdown in 2016. Madison West Coach: Brad Murphy, second Letterwinners (returning/lost): 25/21 Starters returning (offense/defense): 4/7 Madison West finished 5-4 last season and bounced back from a one-win campaign in 2015. The Regents defeated Madison La Follette, Madison Memorial, Janesville Craig, Madison East and Beloit Memorial. With 17 returning letterwinners, the Regents will have less of a learning curve in coach Brad Murphy’s second season, despite 21 players graduating from the 2016 team that finished 5-5 and qualified for the playoffs. Seniors Keishawn Shanklin, Ryan Wenland, Ben Thompson, Amir Harris, Quinn Burgess, Armoni Warfield, Brandon Thill, Diondre Davis, David Maravilla, Jaden Stephens, Alex Okelue, Devin Seiben, Javon Enochs, Gus Zeiss and John Gutknecht and juniors Carson Meyer and Patrick Horvath are all back this season. Shanklin returns as the starting quarterback after being named to the first-team All-Big Eight Conference list in 2016. Shanklin completed 90 of 172 attempted passes for 1,664 yards, 17 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He rushed for 182 yards and seven touchdowns on 59 attempts. The Regents will also have fullback Warfield, who rushed for 212 yards on 42 attempts, back to complement starting running back Jaden Stephens, who rushed for 118 yards and a touchdown on 35 attempts. Linebacker Maravilla, who had 60 total tackles, will look to make a push to be a leader this season. Maravilla added six tackles for a loss, one forced fumble and one interception in 2016. The defense will also bring back three other returning letterwinners, Warfield (outside linebacker), Stephens (outside linebacker) and Horvat (defensive tackle). Warfield had 47 total tackles with five for a loss and two sacks. Stephens finished with 35 total tackles with one for a loss, one fumble recovery, one forced fumble and two interceptions.

marks this season, however, as both the offensive and defensive line need four replacements. The defense is a 4-3, so the line is key to its success. Senior quarterback Davis Roquet will be asked to continue to grow this season. He split time with graduate CJ Fermanich (27for-51, 364 yards, two touchdowns, two interceptions) last year. Roquet was 91-for170 for 1,212 yards, eight touchdowns and two interceptions. Fermanich also rushed for 212 yards and three touchdowns on 26 carries last season, but seniors Dion Huff and James Pabst are both back to lead the backfield. Huff had 196 carries for 1,018 yards and 14 touchdowns, and Pabst had 96 carries for 505 yards and three touchdowns. Fermanich was a weapon as a wide receiver at times last season, as well. He had 21 receptions for 318 yards and three touchdowns. Also gone from last year is Myron Ashford Jr. who had 41 receptions for 620 yards and four touchdowns. Huff is the best receiving threat back from last year. He had 18 receptions for 228 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively, seniors Jimmy Fruciante and Shane Bick are some of the key returners. Fruciante finished with 47 tackles, a fumble recovery, a forced fumble and two interceptions. Bick had 41 tackles with six for a loss, two sacks and two forced fumbles. Some key losses on defense include Joe Ludwig (79 tackles with two for a loss, two sacks, a fumble recovery, a forced fumble), Jack Smith (68 tackles with three for a loss, interception), Caleb Cymbalek (59 tackles with four for a loss, fumble recovery) and Fermanich (50 tackles with one for a loss, two fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles).
receptions for 438 yards and three touchdowns. La Follette was picked to challenge in the conference and make the playoffs again because of its defense. Five starters are back in 2017, including senior safety Anthony West. West, who will also be a starting wide receiver this season, finished with 47 tackles with one for a loss and an interception. Ragland will also be playing both sides of the ball. He had 17 tackles with one for a loss and a sack in 2016. Some key losses on defense include John Delvoye and Johnson. Delvoye had 96 tackles with two for a loss, one sack and a fumble recovery. Johnson had 77 tackles with three for a loss, a fumble recovery, two forced fumbles and an interception.

Verona Area High School
Wildcats look to get back to the playoffs in 2017 ANTHONY IOZZO Assistant sports editor
There will be a new look on both offense and defense for the Verona Area High School football team in 2017. While 38 players return from last season, 36 of whom are seniors, only a few experienced players remain from a 2016 team that finished 9-2 overall, sharing a Big Eight Conference championship with Sun Prairie and making the Level 2 playoffs. The Wildcats graduated 39 players from the 2016 squad, including most of its starters on both sides of the ball. First-team All-Big Eight Conference 2016 players Colton Reiber (OL), Hunter Bourne (TE), Max Fink (QB) and Drew King (RB) all graduated. Second-teamers Colin Van Altena (OL) and Jack Herkert (WR) and honorable menPhoto by Anthony Iozzo tions Michael Coyne (TE) and Sean Dobson (OL) The returning letterwinners for the Verona Area High School football team (front, from left) are: Tucker Teskey, Ruben Zavala, Tristan are also gone. Verona: 36 seniors, two juniors return to the Wildcats this season Continued from page 10 and Brad Laufenberg (DB) all graduated. Honorable mentions Brandon Daniels (DB), Brian Karebu (DL) and Noah Anderson (DB) are also gone. Senior defensive back Bui Clements is the lone defensive all-conference returner. Clements earned a second-team selection last season. Coach Dave Richardson wrote in a preview questionnaire that the Wildcats are young and inexperienced at many positions this season. Verona has just 16 juniors on the roster, so Richardson added that some sophomores will be called upon to contribute on Friday nights. “With a young team, we hope to be in the top five in the conference and again make the playoffs,” Richardson wrote.
Many new faces on offense While Young was used mostly as a kicker and
punter last season, he was called upon several times to help the offense throughout the season, including a touchdown drive in the third quarter of the Level 1 playoff game against Hartland Arrowhead. But now Young will be looked to lead the offense as a starting quarterback. Young, who was 10-for-15 for 70 yards and a touchdown as a backup quarterback, replaces last year’s s t a r t e r F i n k . F i n k wa s 94-for-188 for 1,373 yards, 15 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also carried the ball 26 times for 115 yards and four touchdowns. Young was also the kicker and punter last season. He hit four of five field goals and 39 of 40 extra points. While the 2016 offense had its moments, there were also many times it stalled out because of second- and third-and-longs. Young said the goal in 2017 is to stay ahead of the game and gain four yards per play minimum. The offense

individual players. We are more of a unit this time.” Young said he learned a lot playing last year, including the speed of the game and what the timing should be for throws. B u t n ow f o c u s e d o n 2017, Young said he is excited for the offensive

weapons he will get to use. “I think we are looking really good this season,” Young said. “We have some really good talent and some really good athletes.” There are huge statistical losses from last season, but there is some experience back. The offensive line has three starters back and six returners – seniors Jordan Recob, Timmy Curtis, Tristan Largent, Thomas Becker, Jakob Brugger and Declan Makuch. Van Altena and Reiber are the starters gone from 2016. But besides the line, the rest of the skilled positions are inexperienced. Senior captain Joe Riley (seven carries for 17 yards) and senior Luke Slekar are going to be called upon at running back, but the losses of King (154 carries for 938 yards and eight touchdowns), Nick Lawinger (79 carries for 425 yards and two touchdowns), Obi Ifediora (38 carries for 240 yards and three touchdowns) and Josh Madalinski (14 carries for 105 yards) will be tough to overcome.
King also had nine receptions for 166 yards and a touchdown, and Lawinger had five receptions for 48 yards out of the back field. Senior Carson Bull (TE/ RB), senior Noah Steffenson (SE), senior Jordan Hutchcroft (SE/QB), senior Noah Goth (SE), senior Logan Lindell (TE), senior Shamaar Stephens (TE) and senior Mitchell Lokken (TE) will be some of the new faces Young will be throwing to this season. Sophomore captain tight end Haakon Anderson is a newcomer expected to be thrown into the mix, as well. They will need to replace a lot of production. Bourne had 26 catches for 342 yards and six touchdowns, and Coyne had nine catches for 252 yards and three touchdowns. Herkert finished with 10 catches for 228 yards and four touchdowns. Split end Brian Murphy had 29 catches for 221 yards and a touchdown,

Defense looks to use its speed The defense is also going to be much different this season. While the pass rush was a huge strength with a big defensive line in 2016, speed and quickness will be the strengths of the Wildcats now. Junior captain linebacker Dylan Bourne said there will be different pressures and stunts used to slow down opposing offenses. But he also said that the returners are not naive about the talent that graduated. “Last year, we could pump out a 3-and-out with a 2-yard run, 2-yard run and a 2-yard run where we are consistently stopping them,” Bourne said. “It will be more like we give six, and then we will get a 7-yard loss. … I am not saying we won’t be consistent, but it is not like last year where we will be a heavy grinder and stay in our positions. Instead of that, we will be a quick, big-play defense.” Bourne will be joined by junior captain linebacker Ben Vandervest in a 3-4 defense. Senior linebackers
E l i H a n o , J o e S c a l i s i , G av i n Geronimi, Ruben Zavala and Jono Herbst also return at the position, and newcomer sophomore captain linebacker Ben Cramer is also expected to contribute. “We have young leadership, but we just need the seniors to realize that it is there last year. Senior leadership is important,” Bourne said. Graduates Keyes (31 solo tackles, 75 total tackles, two tackles-for-aloss, three fumble recoveries and 5 sacks) and Scott (40 solo tackles, 89 total tackles, nine tackles-for-a-loss, one fumble recovery, two forced fumbles, one interception and oneand-a-half sacks) led the linebacker corps last season. Linebackers Jordan Gmur (39 tackles, 1 tackle for a loss), Logan Beal (77 tackles, 3 tackles for a loss, 1 fumble recovery and 2 sacks) and Jared Grassman (34 tackles, 4 tackles for a loss, 1 sack and 1 fumble recovery) are also gone. On the defensive line, seniors Reagan Stauffer and Jaylin Thompson return with seniors Anton Golden, Josh Burns, Costas Tsiolis and Nathan Tadisch. Stauffer had 20 solo tackles (38 total tackles) with nine tackles for a loss, one forced fumble and two sacks. Thompson finished with 12 tackles (two for loss) and two sacks. “We are fast and incredibly
smart,” Bourne said. “The biggest change from this year’s defense to last year’s defense is that we are willing to put in the time in the film room.” Willis (89 tackles, 9 tackles for a loss, 1 fumble recovery, 1 forced fumble and 2 sacks) and Hollis (76 tackles, 9 tackles for a loss and 4 sacks) led the defensive line last season. The defensive backs were a strength last year and look to be in 2017 again despite a lot of turnover. Clements leads the returners. He had 30 solo tackles (53 total tackles) with four tackles-for-a-loss, one fumble recovery and one interception. Clements is also going to help the offense as a split end and will be returning kicks. He will be joined by seniors Yousef Amiri, Jack Lilly, Seamus Reilly, Jake Doerfler, Tucker Teskey, Jacob Walton and Jonathan Peer. Brad Laufenberg (109 tackles, four interceptions and two fumble recoveries), Brandon Daniels (60 tackles, five tackles-for-a-loss, one fumble recovery, two interceptions and one sack), Noah Anderson (36 tackles, two tackles-for-a-loss, two forced fumbles and one interception) and Kaeden Meuer (34 tackles, one interception and one sack) led the defensive backs last season.

Five starters return on a spread offense including senior quarterback Michael Toman, senior wide receiver Elliot Grays, junior running back Arindis Vasser and junior offensive lineman Sam Jessup. Toman was 86-for-for-139 for 1,105 yards, six touchdowns and seven interceptions last season. coach after serving as the offensive coordinator for three seasons. On offense, there will be several faces. Graduates Nick Cramer (QB), DJ Sweeney (RB) and wide receiver Luke Malmanger (WR) are all gone. Cramer was 49-for-92 for 693 yards, nine touchdowns and eight interceptions. He also rushed for 481 yards and three touchdowns on 90 carries. Sweeney rushed for 870 yards and 12 touchdowns on 160 carries, and Malmanger caught 23 passes for 399 yards and six touchdowns.

people.” McLain (6-4, 240) and Dylan Bennett (6-7, 240) will be huge factors for Stoughton up front. Senior Tyler Dow (5-10, 165) was an honorable mention linebacker last season but opted not to return this season. Instead the UW-Madison wrestling recruit will spend his time getting ready to try for a second straight WIAA Division 1 state title. The Vikings graduated first-team wide receiver Darvelle Peeples, as well as first-team down lineman Nathan Krueger, linebacker Andy Johnson and defensive back Trevar Holland.
