Food pantry organizers head Sunday parade SAMANTHA CHRISTIAN

The grand marshals of this year’s Summer Fest parade will still feel the breeze down part of Main Street, but not from the seat of a convertible. A truck and float featuring board members and volunteers from the Oregon Area Food Pantry and Oregon Community Resource Network will travel along the new parade route that turns onto Janesville, Spring and Park streets. The Oregon Area Chamber of Commerce selected OAFP board chair Tom Kirchdoerfer and OCRN board chair Jeff Boudreau as the grand marshals for their successful fundraising and advocating efforts for a new food pantry building, which could be built by October on land next to People’s United Methodist Church. Boudreau said the budget for the project has been lowered to about $680,000, and OCRN hit that mark (in large part due to an anonymous donor) around the same time as the ceremonial groundbreaking in April. However, crews are waiting for concrete to be poured after the Fourth of July holiday to begin work on the 4,232-square-foot

structure, which when finished will triple the food pantry’s current size in a warehouse on Union Road. “We thought they raised the money so fast for a great cause and thought we would honor them,” chamber executive director Judy Knutson told the Observer. “They all worked so hard.” Both board chairs wanted to include the entire groups in the parade since the process has been what Boudreau calls a “team effort” over the last few years. Kirchdoerfer said he unfortunately cannot make the parade, but other board members and volunteers plan to be there. OCRN started organizing in May 2015 and became an official nonprofit five months later to be able to start fundraising for the food pantry

project. Shortly afterward, Kirchdoerfer said the food pantry, which had been a “loose ecumenical group,” organized to create a board of directors in April 2016 and last month received its official nonprofit status. “It is an incredibly humbling privilege and honor … to be recognized alongside (OAFP),” Boudreau said. Kirchdoerfer said OAFP is “very pleased” with OCRN’s work and is “anxious to get (building) progress underway” to serve residents in the Oregon School District. “We’re really feeling excited about trying to make this a community effort,” Kirchdoerfer said. Jeff Boudreau

Tom Kirchdoerfer, who moved to the Oregon area in 1985, has been involved with more than just the Oregon Area Food Pantry board. He has served as president of the After School Clubs, Inc., Oregon swim team and Oregon Athletic Booster Club, as well as on the finance committee of Holy Mother of Consolation Catholic Church, where he also sings in the choir. Kirchdoerfer Often seen carrying a videocamera, Kirchdoerfer has filmed many Summer Fest events, like the car show and line dancing, for OCA Media. In his free time he enjoys spending time up north at his family’s cabin “fishing and building things.”

Jeff Boudreau moved to Oregon about 12 years ago, and he is looking forward to volunteering again this year at Summer Fest, whether it’s making brats, taking tickets or cleaning up. Because his passion is “ h u n g e r a n d h o u s i n g ,” in addition to serving as the Oregon Community Resource Network board chair, he is also a Village Boudreau of Oregon trustee, the vice chair of the board of directors for Habitat for Humanity of Dane County and a board member for Sunshine Place in Sun Prairie. He said he enjoys spending time outdoors, whether it’s golfing, running or walking in nature.

Oregon Area Chamber of Commerce executive director Judy Knutson said the judges, who will be a range of ages, will be “looking for creativity” and originality during the 12:30 p.m. parade from the Kwik Trip parking lot on Main Street. “We’re excited to see what people think the definition of ‘decades’ is, and what it means to their era,” she said. The tug of war competition returns to Summer Fest Saturday. And while it’s mainly for established teams, individuals can also participate in exhibition matches if there are enough willing participants. Event organizer and United States Tug of War Association president Shelby Richardson said the tug of war event has been going on at Summer Fest for about 10 years in a row, and on and off for the past two decades. She said teams from Minnesota, Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin will compete. After being divided into weight classes (for example, participants in the men’s “600 open” together must weigh 600 kilograms — about 1,323 pounds, or less), teams must win two out of three “pulls” to declare a victor in a match, with each pull lasting anywhere from two to 10 minutes. There are four classes for men, one for women, one co-ed, one open class, and a supervised kids’ pull. A winning team will be named in each weight class. Richardson’s team, the

She said Summer Fest gives the Tuggers a yearly chance to share their sport of choice with village residents and visitors during a tournament open to teams from across the Midwest. Bleachers will be open for seating during the tournament, but Richardson recommends spectators bring their own lawn chairs. The weigh-in is from 10 a.m. to noon, with the event starting at 12:30 p.m. “It will probably be around four o’clock before we’re finished,” she said. Fireworks are back at Summer Fest for the fourth year in a row after they returned for the event’s 50th anniversary in 2014. The display, which will be set off from Jaycee Park, won’t be especially different from last year, but Oregon Area Chamber of Commerce executive director Judy Knutson said “we’ll have more fireworks.” The show will begin at dusk, around 9:30 p.m., and last about 40 minutes, Knutson said. In the case of rain, the show will be Friday at the same time. Over 100 participants will get a self-guided tour of Oregon Saturday morning in the Summer Fest 10-mile/5K/10K Classic, which also includes a 1K kids run and 2-mile walk. Runners will be racing around Jaycee Park and down East Lincoln St. and West Netherwood Road. They will pass Netherwood Knoll Elementary, Prairie View Elementary and other locations, with three different running routes and a separate walking route. “Any time you have a 5K and 10K and 10-mile race, running enthusiasts want to come out,” organizer Elyse Smithback said. “You do get to run through parts of the trail and Oregon, but the big thing is that it is just a part of the annual Oregon Summer Fest that people like to be a part of.” All races start on the Summer Fest grounds near the library. The 10-mile route exits Oregon north f r o m M a r ke t S t r e e t t o West Netherwood Road to Cusick Parkway to the Badger State Trail. Softball tournament spans weekend

File photo by Scott Girard

This year’s softball tournament will be held every day of Summer Fest.

Summer Fest attendees can head over to Kiser Firemen’s Park to watch some softball nearly anytime over the weekend. The 16-team double-elimination tournament will begin Thursday around 6:30 p.m., with games lasting until 9:30 or when the fireworks begin, said event organizer Bob Klein. Teams will play the same times Friday night. Saturday will be a full

day of softball, with games scheduled from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. The tournament is scheduled to wrap up Sunday with games from noon until 3 p.m., Klein said, though weather could change that. “We got a little rain the forecast (earlier in the weekend), so we might have a little longer day on Sunday,” Klein said. The bracket will be available on oregonadultsoftball.com/ summer_fest. – Scott Girard

Volleyball tournament is Saturday There will be 13 teams battling for a top-three finish and a cash prize Saturday in the Oregon Summer Fest volleyball tournament at Kiser Firemen’s Park. Organizer JJ Giese said he was hoping for 16 teams to sign up but the deadline to register was June 10. He said he would accept another entry as late as the day before. The cost to sign up is $120 per team. The tournament begins at 9 a.m. and will end around 4 p.m. The six-player

teams will break off into two pools and will play on four nets in the morning. Once the round robin is complete, the top eight teams will make the championship bracket, with the top three teams winning cash prizes up to $300. The five teams that don’t make the championship bracket will still play in a consolation bracket. For information, visit oregonwisummerfest.com. – Anthony Iozzo

Cornhole canceled, expected to return in 2018 The cornhole tournament will take a year off, but it is expected to return to Summer Fest in 2018. Event organizer Tony Antoniewicz said the event, which had been set for 2 p.m. Sunday, was postponed “to make a bigger and better tournament next year.” “(We) needed a little time for planning and logistical work for next year,” he said. – Scott Girard

Any proper summer festival just wouldn’t be complete with a car show, and Summer Fest is a great chance to see a wide variety of makes and models of classic vehicles. Granberg said the new location will put the cars closer to the action. “Being so close to all the other Summer Fest activities is going to make it an even better event than past years, with more for those bringing their cars to do and more for those coming to look at the cars to do,” he said. “We are really looking forward to the show this year.” Registration for the event is $10 and is from 9 a.m. to noon. Families with young children can check out a new addition to Summer Fest geared just for them after the parade. The “family fun” event will be held from 1-4 p.m. Sunday in the grassy area west of Oregon Pool and north of the car show on Brook Street. There will be face painting, balloon making, games, a dunk tank, magic shows, karate demonstrations and big vehicle tours. Chamber board members Dan Donoghue, of The Chocolate Caper, and Megan Schuetz, of Gorman and Company, wanted to bring a new, budget-friendly event to the annual summer festival that had activities for kids around 4-12 years old. Other local youths will also be volunteering during the event. Kids from the Oregon Youth Center will also be there doing face painting from 1-3:15 p.m., and Cub Scout Pack 350 will be running the dunk tank. While most of the activities are free, Schuetz, the scout’s committee chair, said there will be a nominal fee or food pantry donation to “maintain a sense of order” for the dunk tank line. Proceeds from the event will be shared with the Oregon Area Food Pantry.

Kids can participate in carnival games, like ring toss, and the Village of Oregon public works, police, fire and EMS departments will also have some vehicles parked for kids to explore and learn about. Donoghue said he hopes people come out and have a good time, and perhaps try some of the food items on sale there, like fruit nachos. “We want to create a fun environment for kids,” he said. Schuetz said she hopes people hang out after the parade and stop by the family fun event while at the festival grounds for the car show and Thrilla on the Grilla. Oregon Observer - Summer Fest

Local band Universal Sound returns Thursday BILL LIVICK Unified Newspaper Group

Oregon’s celebrated teenage rock band Distant Cuzins won’t be making an appearance this year at Oregon Summer Fest, but another – and older – local band is returning for what’s become an annual performance. Universal Sound has been together since 1971 and has become a fixture at the summer festival. The quartet’s current incarnation specializes in Americana. It features the vocals of bassist Dan Sutter, and the band’s other members – lead guitarist Randy Glodowski, drummer Alan Maslowski and keyboard player Scott Nabholtz – all sing as well. They perform covers of a number of hit songs, including Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline,” the Eagles’ “Take it to the Limit” and Old Crow Medicine Show’s “Wagon Wheel.” In an interview, Sutter said Universal Sound performs between 100-150 shows per year, and its core members have been performing together for decades. “Our keyboard player has been in the band at least 30 years, and our drummer about 25 years,” Sutter said. He’s been a band member for about 20 years, while guitarist Glodowski joined three years ago, he added. Sutter said the band plays oldies from the 1960s to the ‘80s, as well as some from the ‘90s. “We do some newer country, but mostly old stuff,” he said. “It’s definitely Americana as opposed to hard rock.” “We’re older guys and we don’t want to hurt ourselves,” he quipped. Summer Fest organizer and Oregon Area Chamber of Commerce executive director Judy Knutson said Universal Sound has a strong local following. “I’ve followed them myself for many years,” she said. “It’s always nice to hear them play, and it’s a chance to catch up with other people who are also longtime fans.” Universal Sound is scheduled to perform at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 22 in the beer tent. Other bands coming to this year’s Summer Fest include Kings of Radio, who appear at 8:30 p.m. Friday, June 23, and the LoveMonkeys, who will perform at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, June 24. Then on Sunday, June 25, three other bands will perform during the Thrilla on the Grilla. Horse will play from 11 a.m. to 1:15 p.m., followed by Back Forty at 1:30 p.m. and Time Travelers from 3:30-5:30 p.m.

‘Safe rider bus’ returns Those who consume too many adult beverages at Summer Fest on Friday or Saturday night will have a safe way to get home. The Oregon Area Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a “safe rider bus” for the third year in a row, which will provide festivalgoers rides home between 11:30 p.m. and 1:30 a.m. on the two weekend nights of the festival. “We’re just looking for everybody to be safe and have a good time,” said OACC executive director Judy Knutson. The bus will pick up by the entertainment tent and bring Oregon residents home first, Knutson said. After the Oregon residents have been brought home, “we’ll take everybody else home” to places like Stoughton or Madison, she added. - Scott Girard

Market changes format The Summer Fest Market will look a little different than last year. Rather than being only in the main tent, the market will be spread out between the tent, near the Netherwood parking area, and the rest of the food vendors outside, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. The change comes as a result of vendor preferences, as some wanted to be located with the rest of the food vendors. New this year, The Chocolate Caper will have fruit dessert nachos with candy and chocolate. Honey and Lace, Wild Tree, Tupperware, Sensi, Do Terra and R’Bri Pure n’ Natural will be returning. The complete list of vendors is still being updated, visit oregonwisummerfest. com for more information and updates. – Amber Levenhagen

Tickets are $12, or $10 in advance at the Oregon Area Chamber of Commerce, and include a meal and one entry into the raffle. There is also a hot dog meal for $4 for kids. One of the premier marching bands in the area, O r eg o n H i g h S c h o o l ’s Shadow (formerly Shadow Drum and Bugle Corps) welcomes in some of the other top groups for Sunday’s Parade of Bands. The annual parade and field competition, held at O H S Pa n t h e r S t a d i u m , features bands from Lake Mills, Appleton, Racine, Fort Atkinson and Sun Prairie. Event organizer Sonja Patterson said the events are built on a “tradition of excellence” that stretches back to 1972 and the genesis of the Mid-America Competing Band Directors Association. The Oregon High School Summer Marching Band was a founding member of MACBDA and has competed in every summer season since its inception. Patterson said MACBDA is the only remaining summer marching band competition circuit in America. The field show competition begins at 6:45 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $9 per person or $25 for a family of four or less. L a s t y e a r, t h e O H S marching band changed

Mother nature was not cooperative last year, but organizers are hoping for better conditions for the hot air balloon rides at Summer Fest this time around. The rides, which bring people about 40 feet above the Kiser Park soccer fields, are expected to begin around 6:30 or 7 p.m. Friday, June 23 – or whenever the wind calms down – explained event organizer Tony Antoniewicz. It is expected to last about two hours overall, with each ride between five and 10 minutes. The balloon can accommodate two people in addition to the operator.
