New school facilities likely on the horizon. Yet in spite of these exciting changes, there are some things about Verona that stay the same. What is the Verona Area Chamber of Commerce?
The Verona Area Chamber of Commerce is a partnership of businesses and professional people working together to build a healthy Verona economy and to improve the quality of life in our community. Its mission is to proactively promote, support and enhance economic growth and community wellbeing. The Chamber fulfills many roles - economic development and planning, tourist information center, business advocacy, economic counseling, referral service and more. Some of the Chamber’s objectives are to help businesses prosper and grow, to increase employment opportunities, to contribute to the overall economic stability of the community, and to promote tourism. Each year it sponsors or plays a part in dozens of events, programs, forums and services. Whether you are new to Verona or have been here for years, the Verona Area Chamber of Commerce invites you to become a member. Newcomers bring a variety of perspectives as well as fresh ideas to the Chamber, and veteran Verona organizations and businesses bring valuable local experience to the Chamber.
The Chamber’s members include businesses, associations, organizations, non-profit groups and individuals. When you join, you’ll be in good company. The Chamber has ended each of the last nine years with more than 300 members.
Who Leads the Chamber?
Its members run the Chamber. Members elect a twelve-person board of directors that decides policies and sets goals. The executive director is Le Jordan.
Volunteer Committees
Member participation in volunteer committees and Chamber activities is welcomed but it is not a requirement of membership. Current Chamber committees include: Chamber Ambassadors. The Chamber Ambassadors are the Chamber’s front line in terms of outreach, member relations and event assistance. The Ambassador’s goal is to bring the Chamber to the members. Business Education. Acts as a liaison between businesses, school administration and the students in the Verona Area School District. Involved with resource partnerships, career exploration events and other efforts. Economic Development. Serves as a forum for discussion of current economic development issues affecting Verona and the business community. Marketing and Promotion. This committee is dedicated to the marketing of Verona as a destination for tourists as well as the promotion of local events. Retail and Restaurant. Discusses issues and creates events with the goal of promoting Verona as a shopping destination. Special Events. Involved in Spin the Wheel at Hometown U.S.A. Days, the Verona Loop Festival of the Ironman Wisconsin Triathlon, and other events.
All members receive a free listing in the annual Membership Directory and Community Guide, which has a circulation of more than 12,000 and is distributed to every household in the 53593 zip code. Members may use space at the Chamber office located at 120 West Verona Avenue to display their company’s literature. The Chamber gives out member referrals requested from phone calls, walk-ins, and email inquiries received at the Chamber, and sends out tourist packets and relocation packets upon request. Members also receive a page featuring their logo and describing their business on the Chamber website, www.veronawi.com, and a link to their website from the Chamber site.

Members can network and socialize at events and seminars throughout the year. Members stay connected with one another and stay informed about current issues through membership meetings and a monthly Chamber e-newsletter.

Verona At A Glance
History and Fun Facts
The Town of Verona was officially established by the Wisconsin Territorial Legislature in February 1847. What is now the City of Verona was incorporated as a village in 1921 and became a city in April 1978. On April 1, 2008 city and town residents took to the polls to decide whether to merge the two communities into a single City of Verona. While the measure passed in the city of Verona, it was defeated in the township. The town is named after Verona, New York, hometown of early settlers George and William Vroman. Verona High School’s first senior class graduated in 1901. Their class motto was “Labor Conquers All.” In the early 20th Century, Verona’s downtown featured four grocery stores, including one where you could also by a Harley Davidson Motorcycle. Verona is the hometown of former U.S. Senator Wayne Morse, who represented the state of Oregon in the U.S. Senate from 1945 until 1969. Morse was elected twice as a Republican and twice as a Democrat. He once set a record for the longest filibuster in Senate history, and he was one of only two senators to vote against the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution. Verona’s nickname is Hometown U.S.A. because it was selected by a detachment of fighting men in Vietnam in July 1966, as “the perfect example of Hometown, U.S.A.” Verona is the hometown of two Olympic gold medalists. Speed skater Casey FitzRandolph is a three-time Olympian (1998, 2002 & 2006). He won gold at the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics Games. Swimmer Neil
Walker earned a gold and a silver medal in Sydney 2000, and a gold and bronze medal in Athens 2004. Verona has twice hosted the Cyclo-Cross National Championships and is the hub for the bicycling portion of the annual Ironman Wisconsin Triathlon. The City of Verona is a dynamic, vibrant community with many amenities for residents, visitors, and businesses. Our citizens enjoy a high quality of life, excellent schools, and the small-town feel of Hometown U.S.A. Verona is a center for recreation in the region. It is located at the crossroad of two major regional trails: the Military Ridge State Bike Trail and the National Ice Age Scenic Trail. These trails, which run right through the heart of the City, provide a wonderful natural setting with bicycle and walking connections to Madison and other area communities. Hundreds of acres of parkland and several athletic facilities are located in and around the city including Reddan Soccer Park, the Verona Ice Arena, and Ceniti Park – a baseball, football, and lacrosse complex on East Verona Avenue. These venues are a great resource for our residents and they attract thousands to the community each year supporting local businesses. Verona also offers many excellent public facilities including an impressive library, a popular senior center, numerous park shelters, and a swimming beach located at Fireman’s Park. The Verona Area School District has a strong reputation for providing quality education and is home to the Verona Performing Arts Center and Natatorium. Verona is also a great place for business from the specialty shops in our downtown to the corporate headquarters of a worldwide healthcare software company. The City of Verona is governed by a part-time mayor, who is elected at large, and eight parttime alders who are elected by district. Within this organizational structure, there are many volunteer committees, boards and commissions. The city has about 75 full-time employees. The City Council has five standing committees each comprised of three alders. The standing committees include Finance; Personnel; Public Works, Sewer and Water; Public Safety and Welfare; and the Senior Citizens Committee.

The Town of Verona was established in 1847. While much has changed in the Town as the Cities of Madison, Fitchburg, and Verona have grown, the Town of Verona remains a place that many people are proud to call home. The Town has a population of just under 2000 people who chose to live in the Town of Verona because of its rural beauty and close proximity to jobs and commerce. Over 70 percent of the lands in the Town are actively farmed. Portions of the Town are wooded and have glacial terminal moraine, as well as other predominant features such as the Badger Mill Creek and the Sugar River. The Military Ridge Bike Trail and the National Ice Age Trail provide recreational opportunities such as biking, hiking, and snowmobiling. The town maintains over 40 miles of roadways, many of which are enjoyed by recreational and competitive bicyclists. The Town of Verona is working hard to keep its unique identity. There is a great sense of pride in being a Town of Verona resident. Residents enjoy a high quality of life away from the stresses that can come with city living. In addition to the City Council committees, there are a number of commissions and boards that are comprised of members of the public along with representatives from the City Council. Those interested in volunteering to serve on a citizen commission or board can complete the Committee Appointment form on the city’s website (www. veronawi.gov) The mayor is elected to a two-year term. The members of the Common Council are elected to alternating two-year terms, four in even numbered years and four in odd numbered years. The Common
Council meetings are the second and fourth Monday of the month at 7 p.m. at City Hall and the Plan Commission meeting is the first Monday of the month at 6:30 p.m. These meetings are televised on VHAT Local Access channel and are available online at the City’s YouTube Channel (https://www.youtube.com/ user/VeronaWIMeetings). The city’s administrative staff and the Verona Police department are housed in the City Center building at 111 Lincoln Street. The 43,000-square-foot complex is also home to the city’s Municipal Court, Common Council and Plan Commission.

Recreation & Things To Do Angel’s Wish

It is dedicated to reducing animal overpopulation, re-homing companion animals, and raising awareness of animal welfare issues in South Central Wisconsin. Badger Prairie County Park, northeast of the city at Old Highway PB and US Highway 18 & 151, is home to a three-acre pet exercise area, play fields, an aeromodeling field, mountain bike and hiking trails, a shelter, and a playground area. It serves as the center of the Ice Age Trail Junction Area and has access to the Military Ridge State Trail as well as a segment of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail. Prairie Moraine County Park is southeast of the city. The entrance is reached by taking US Highway 18 & 151 to County Highway PB; the entrance is one mile south on County Highway PB at Wesner Road. The 160-acre park is
ideal for viewing the moraine and provides an excellent area for interpretation of Wisconsin’s glacial history. Dog owners will enjoy both off-leash and on-leash areas for dogs. The Walter R. Scheidegger County Forest is a public recreation area on the Town of Verona’s south side (on Range Trail). Scheidegger was a Verona High School graduate who willed $534,420 to the Dane County Park Commission. Public access to the nearly 80-acre site began in the summer of 2008. It offers a mile loop of hiking trails, a shelter available for reservation, group camp, restroom, and drinking fountain. The area has been restored from a former Dane County Sheriff shooting range to a managed forest of primarily oak and hickory. The shelter, kiosk, and bathroom were all built from wood harvested onsite.

Fireman’s Park is located along Paoli and Bruce Streets on the City’s southwest side. Existing facilities associated with fenced quarry swimming include: a lifeguard on duty, a beach, a diving platform, slides, diving boards, restrooms, a drinking fountain and a playground. Outside of the swimming area are paths, a shelter, soccer fields and fishing. Season passes are available to both Verona residents and non-residents. The 16th Annual Bash at the Beach will be Wednesday, August 3rd from 4-7 p.m.

Nearly 10,000 swimmers each year enjoy the beautiful 5,500 square-foot outdoor pool, located at the Irwin A. and Robert D. Goodman Jewish Community Campus in Verona. The pool’s six 25-meter lanes make it great for lap-swimming, and its zero-depth entry make it accessible to everyone, including small children and those with
wheelchairs. When you’re out of the water, the pool’s shaded area and deck chairs offer a great place to lounge with friends and family, while enjoying a variety of delicious concessions available daily. The pool has a salt-water generator, making the pool better for the environment and for swimmers. This generator allows the use of salt, a natural element found in the earth, as a sanitizing agent, instead of relying on large amounts of liquid chlorine. The Goodman Aquatic Center is now home to large solar panels, which help to heat the pool water. The Goodman Aquatic Center, which is located at 7762 County Highway PD, just 15 minutes from downtown Madison, is open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. On weekdays the community is generally invited to swim from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., after Camp Shalom hours. There are extended weekday hours at other times throughout the summer. The complete schedule can be found at www.mscr.org. Madison School and Community Recreation (MSCR) provides the lifeguards and offers a variety of classes. The campus is the summer home of Camp Shalom (the oldest day camp in Dane County) with more than three miles of biking and hiking trails open to the public when camp is not in session, a pond, a one-room schoolhouse, and a barn and farmhouse built in the 1880s.

Recreation & Things To Do Mountain bikers looking for adventure can access the Military Ridge State Trail from the park, ride about two miles east of the park to Fitchrona Road, and look for one of two trailside entrances to Quarry Ridge Mountain Bike Trail, featuring a single track loop with technical trail features for beginner and expert riders.

Not many cities can boast about having a national trail, but Verona can. The Ice Age National Scenic Trail is one of only eight national scenic trails in the United States. Primarily for foot travel, it showcases Wisconsin’s world-renowned glacial features. The Verona Segment of the trail takes wayfarers on a six-and-one-half-mile trek that travels through farm fields, woods and prairies, along Badger Mill Creek, past glacial kettle ponds, and through Badger Prairie County Park with acres of prairie flowers and grasses. The Ice Age Trail is a thousand-mile footpath — entirely within Wisconsin — that highlights these Ice Age landscape features while providing access to some of the state’s most beautiful natural areas and is intended for such low-impact activities as walking, backpacking, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. The serpentine course approximates the last stopping point or terminal edge of the most recent continental glaciers, which ended their last major surge 14,000 to 16,000 years ago.

For both viewers and participants, one of the best places to get caught up in the excitement of the Iron-
man Wisconsin Triathlon is the Verona Loop Festival where masses of fans line North Main Street to watch the bicycle segment of the race. The Verona Loop Festival features food provided by several high school sports teams, and serves as a fundraising activity for area youths while providing a safe and convenient place for fans to root on the athletes. Shuttle buses run between Madison and the festival during the day. The Ironman Triathlon is one of the most grueling events in the world. Competitors swim 2.4 miles, bicycle 112 miles and complete a 26.2-mile marathon. They have 17 hours to complete the event. They get plenty of encouragement as they pedal along Main Street in Verona. The 2017 Ironman Wisconsin Triathlon is scheduled for Sunday, September 10th.

Verona is fortunate to have a portion of the 41-mile Military Ridge State Trail run right through its downtown. The packed limestone trail is open for hiking, bicycling, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and motorized wheelchairs. Parking is available in several spots, including at Hometown Junction on Main Street. On summer Sunday mornings, it is common to see people pedaling about six miles from Verona to the unincorporated town of Riley for a pancake breakfast. The trail, in Iowa and Dane Counties, connects Dodgeville and Fitchburg. Most of the trail follows the former Chicago and North Western Railway line. Bicyclists at least 16 years old must have a current Wisconsin State Trail pass or a daily pass to use the trail.

Recreation & Things To Do Upper Sugar River Watershed
Verona Area Natatorium
Verona sits at the heart of the Upper Sugar River Watershed. The watershed (an area of land that drains into a marsh, stream, river, lake or groundwater when it rains or snows) is 170 square miles of rolling farms, bustling communities, private retreats, parks and other public lands waiting to be explored. Its watershed resources, particularly trout fishing, have been featured on television and radio. Many of its 115 miles of streams are open to the public through non-profit efforts and national, state and county support of public fishing easements and trail development. A great family canoe and kayak water trail begins just outside Verona.

Verona Area School District Forest
The Verona Area School District School Forest is located directly northwest of the high school campus. The 14-acre school forest was purchased in the late 1960s at the same time as the land for a new, larger high school was purchased. At the time this marked the northern boundary of the City of Verona. In the ensuing years, the city has grown around the forest. It is now a slice of nature in the middle of the city and an outdoor labora-
tory for school-age children. City residents and their dogs are welcome to use the trail system that traverses prairie, wetland and woodland habitats. Access the school forest from Cross Country Park at Basswood Avenue, from the high school campus near the tennis courts, or from the VASD central office parking lot. The school forest is home to both the middle and high school cross country teams and is managed by Verona Area School District naturalist and high school science teacher, Matt Tiller.

Verona Hometown Days is an annual event, which is not only entertainment for the entire family, but serves as a large fundraiser for many community organizations including the Optimist Club of Verona, the Verona Lions Club, the Rotary Club of Fitchburg-Verona, American Legion and Auxiliary, many youth groups, and the Verona Area Chamber of Commerce. The long weekend features a Main Street parade, a carnival midway, fireworks and more. Fairgoers can play games, listen to music, enjoy the carnival and relax with food and cold beer. Entrance to the event, as well as many activities, are free. Verona Hometown Days 2017 is scheduled for June 1-4.

Verona Little League Baseball-Softball Complex

Thanks to the generosity of hundreds of volunteers and businesses who have given gifts of time, materials and money, the Verona Little League (VLL) opened one of the premier Little League Baseball and Softball complexes in the state in 2006. Ceniti Park at 601 East Verona Avenue includes four diamonds as well as batting cages, bleachers, a two story concession stand and the excitement of a big-league park. Over the last seven years, VLL has hosted many district and state tournaments and will hold the Mid-Summer Classic tournament again this summer bringing in teams from around the state. The league is celebrating its 21st year, serves over 500 kids on nearly 50 teams and is chartered by the Little League Inc. of Williamsport, PA. Registration for the season begins on Feb. 1, and Opening Day 2017 is April 29th.

The City of Verona has more than 20 parks and several ponds on more than 200 acres. Badger Prairie County Park on the city’s north side and Prairie Moraine County Park southeast of Verona provide access to the Verona Segment of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail and more than 600 acres of park and open space.
Seven park shelters are available for private event rental. Two of them can accommodate up to 500 people. More information is available on the city web site, www. veronawi.gov. In winter, depending on weather conditions, Harriet Park and the outdoor rink at Verona Ice Arena offer ice skating. The shelter at Harriet Park is heated. In summer, fans of remote-controlled sailboats often use the Prairie Oaks Pond at Cross Country Road and Enterprise Drive. Onlookers can watch as model yachts maneuver around buoys. For the past 22 years, Verona has been recognized as a Tree City USA, an honor given by The National Arbor Day Foundation to cities that have demonstrated a commitment and dedication to forestry. The Recreation Department offers youth and adult recreational opportunities. It also offers discount tickets to Wisconsin attractions including Noah’s Ark, Great America, Mt. Olympus, Milwaukee Zoo, and several other sites may be available.

Verona: A Biking Destination

Whether you are a competitive bicyclist with calves of steel or a recreational rider who enjoys an occasional weekend excursion, Verona, Wisconsin has the type of challenge you are looking for. How many other communities can brag that they are home to the trailhead for a major state trail, serve as the center point for a major triathlon, and have hosted a cycling national championship? Verona has long been proud to serve as the starting point for the 40-mile Military Ridge State Trail. This packed limestone trail stretches through Mount Horeb, Blue Mounds, Barneveld and Ridgeway before concluding in Dodgeville. With only mild inclines and marvelous scenery, this trail will be enjoyed by bikers of all skill and fitness levels as well as by hikers, motorized wheelchair riders, and in the winter cross country skiers and snowmobilers. For those who might prefer a more urban biking experience, the Capital City Trail can be found by heading immediately east from the Military Ridge Trail Head parking lot. This 17-mile paved trail zigs and zags across Madison, Wisconsin’s capital city and offers easy access to the Capital Springs Centennial State Recreation Area, the University of Wisconsin Arboretum, the Olbrich Botanical Gardens, and many other sites. If two trails are not enough, it is only a short jaunt to the Badger State Trail. This trail stretches from neighboring Fitchburg through the town of Belleville and city of Monroe all the way to Illinois. Among the trail’s highlights is the quarter-mile Stewart Tunnel just south of Belleville, considered one of the darkest tunnels in all of Wisconsin! For those more interested in speed and endurance than “rails to trails” biking, try the route of the annual Ironman Wisconsin Triathlon. This 112-mile route begins and ends in Madison, but the majority of the extremely difficult test of endurance involves two trips around the “Verona Loop.” Traversing more than 45 miles along scenic country roads, the curves, climbs and descents of the Verona Loop will challenge even the most experienced cyclist. The Verona Loop is popular with both individual cyclists and groups, and it is not uncommon for several hundred riders to pedal through Verona on any given weekend before the race in September. Still looking for a new ride to prove your mettle? How about the Horribly Hilly Hundreds, held each June just west of Verona in Blue Mounds. Dubbed “The toughest one-day challenge ride in the Midwest,” this grueling test features three routes (100K, 150K, and 200K) with an accumulation of 10,000 feet of elevation gain in the Driftless Area of Wisconsin. Approximately 1,300 ride the Horribly Hilly each year, or as they like to call it, “biking like a Viking!” If you are more interested in thrills than endurance biking, Verona has something for you as well! For the fun-seekers, a short ride east on the Capital City Trail will bring you to one of two entrances to the Quarry Ridge Mountain Bike Trail. This single track loop has features for both beginner and expert riders. The “main loop” is about a mile, but riders can mix things up by turning on to more technical trails throughout the course. If you want still more adventure, try riding where the pros go. In 2012 and 2013, Verona hosted the Cyclo-Cross National Championships at Badger Prairie Park, and the community continues to host smaller cyclo-cross events throughout the year. You can test your grit on the cyclo-cross course all year long, but be prepared for twists, turns, climbs, descents, and even a few stairs. The community of Verona, also known as “Hometown U.S.A.,” offers all of these bicycling options while also being just a 10-minute jaunt from Madison and all sites and sounds of Wisconsin’s capital city.
